    Incredible against the bone. Lots of people saying it’s too soft of steel. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing when you are abusing it. I tried that on the neck of a 360 bull elk with a great topps knife 1095 differential heat treatment. Had chips so big that I had to send it back to topps to repair it. Required a professional grinder. Having said that I knew I may break the knife when I was going against bone. Many people don’t know that bone can be harder than steel. Now I know not to do that with my topps, and I’m glad it is tempered harder because it stays sharp longer. But with 3v I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing to be a little softer steel, because it will take more abuse that way. And roll instead of chip. Easier to fix at home. So my advice is if your going to baton and hit bone softer may be better. If only using it as a knife should be used. Maybe find one with a harder temper. A good forged axe is more likely to chip than a cheap one, but you don’t have to sharpen it all the time. And if you know how to properly use an axe you want a harder tempered one. I use a fiskars hatchet for bone because it’s softer and rolls rather than chip. I use my wetterlings for skinning and chopping wood. Make sense? More people need to show how knives to against bone. Hardly anybody tests it. A professional meat cleaver is usually 3v. I would want mine around 58-59 max for a cleaver for bone.

      Yo creo que uno artesanal es la mejor opción porque los aumentos de precios a los cuchillos extranjeros es una locura. Además comprando artesanal ayudas a negocios pequeños. Aquí es al revés con el precio. Los artesanos son considerados custom y el precio es más elevado que los de producción.

      I’m actually happy that the blade edge rolled rather than chipped off, I’d always rather err on the side of a little softer steel and deform the blade edge, than run the heat treat too high, and it becomes brittle and chips off...

  • @shj2000
    @shj2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I liked the review. But, I don't like the knife. The spine should be sharper - it needs to be able to work with a ferro rod and it needs to be able to scrape. I do not like that the blade rolled on bone. Not good if you are processing game. And I agree with you that the leather sheath appears to be cheap. Now I do like the blade shape and length. Lots of belly and the length makes it possible to do camp chores like batoning. For me the dislikes out weigh the likes. Thanks for posting this review.

    • @thecavemanknivesreview.8097
      @thecavemanknivesreview.8097  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching and your opinion. This is the kind of knife that could have been way better with little work on the factory. Like a sharp spine. To be fair, that bone is a hard piece. But yes. I would change the spine. Get a full scandi grind and add a better sheath. Maybe micarta handle . The price will go up. But it would have been a great blade.

    • @9mmkahr
      @9mmkahr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you did a full scandi grind you would lessen the inclusive angle of the edge, and the blade would be MORE prone to rolling, with the benefit of being able to reach a finer edge. Also Scandi grinds require more metal to be removed to sharpen / touch up an edge. I trust the manufacturer when it comes to engineering the bevel to compliment steel type, temper and hardness.

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@9mmkahr Agreed, if that was a full scandi it would of destroyed that edge. Full scandi is for soft wood carving , people don't understand grinds esp thee apex which is very important. I used to be into this must have "scandi" and sharp spine nonsense and after actually using knives in the real world I've totally lost interest in it all.
      The marketing and TH-cam community make these knife companies tons of money on BS crap that nobody uses ....Firesteels are great for emergency situation or to feel "crafty" but when cold and needing a fire ya bet your cold butt I'm using a lighter. Then there is the freaking featherstick nonsense, I like making feather sticks for relaxation but for fire starting its only needed in extreme situations.
      A skilled knife user can feather stick with any sharp blade it proves nothing. Then there is the dumbest one yet BATONING😒 I also like batonig I'm no prude or batoning Nazi police have at it. BUT don't try selling me a knife by batoning it through a piece of seasoned wood a butter knife can do the same its all about basic physics.
      Can some steels do better through crazy freaking wood that stresses the knife to a insane level ? YES..... But who is gonna ever do that 😂
      When I see people complain about how a knife bent or broke while abusing the fricken thing I laugh. Yet companies lose sales over these dumb unrealistic and useless test.
      Schrade sold tons of Chinese garbage blades cause big channels were batoning wood and making fancy feather sticks 24/7 . ... I got suckered into that madness 3 years ago and learned a ton and spent way to much money on crap knives.
      These Benchmade Knives are pretty nice and will last a lifetime under normal use. I plan on getting the Bushcrafter 162 here soon its a great knife esp the steel .....I just gotta see a few more batoning vids to make sure it can do the job😉😂

    You can send that old Puukko to Benchmade and ask for a hardness test and potential knife replacement; since that puukko is first production, it's definitely the soft 3V. Do yourself a favor and get that knife replaced with one that's properly heat-treated, for free (minus the cost of shipping it one-way). Make sure to put in the notes that you do not mind the knife being dented with hardness tent divots, should it happen to test as properly heat-treated (since otherwise, they'll follow-up with you and ask you to confirm you're ok with that).
