A big thumbs up from Australia. I'm an aging gent and reading the instructions on the packaging resulted in information overload. Found this video, followed the steps, and my favourite cargo shorts (I live in the sub-tropics) have gone from faded blue to black as black and look new (unlike their owner). Thank you.
Old Certified Senile Fossil here (as my buddy calls me). I agree with your comment. Normally I'm a "Read The Instructions" guy but geez! Then I started watching many videos on how to do it and this one is the best and simplest.
I've been doing this for years (successfully - they look like new when done) but never have used dish soap. I am going to research the benefits of the soap. I also just use two bottles and dye all of my black clothes at once (keep agitating so they don't get a mottled effect). I used to just do this in my old washing machine and turn it off to soak, then agitate off and on. The new washing machines will auto drain though so I've been doing the stove top method for a couple of years...
Do I still need to use that rite dye fixative it's my first time using it and I need it for my work clothes the black is all faded and I need it to stay black
Thank you for this video. I did use the black dye on my faded black jeans and they look great and like new. Now I'm using it on my wine colored jeans, can't wait to see the results.
I got a bleach stain on my black Calvin Klein cargos so I purchased the Rit liquid Dye. I followed your instructions. Instead of a sink, I used a large plastic bucket and some bbq tongs. My sink wasn't adequate for rinsing so I was stuck in the bathtub which was quite an ordeal trying to rinse out all the dye (I wish I had used gloves). I'm now washing them in the washer as I type this, but prior to that I could tell how incredibly black they were even when wet, and I couldn't see the bleach stain either. I'll see what happens after I dry it. Thank you for doing this.... I got one more tanned cargo i gotta do... and I dread it, this took some WORK!

If you want it to hold better, before washing it, let it soak in a mixture of water and a few teaspoons of powdered food grade citric acid for a couple hours, or add it when washing. That will help the colors lock in.
That was an awesome job.... Great way to explain the process!!! In my findings, I figure less water... Brings out more boldness of the dye in the garment.... All in all great vid!!!
The results looked good but what if I were to dye super light denim jeans; will I need to keep dying it till I get the color i like? Is it even worth doing that? Thanks.
There are formulas on the rit website for doing this. Ex adding a specific amount of orange to the black dye bath to dye blue colored fabric. This has to do with color theory.
Huh why wash it after that fades it again instantly lol. I used this for spot treatment on my pocket area cause it fades from stuff being in your pockets which is very annoying. I mixed the dye with hot water and dish soap and dabbed it on pocket area it worked great.
About 3-4 shirts depending on how black you are going and how black they were before. Dont bleach before hand, as that damages cloth and it wont take dye as well. If you want REALLY black do the stovetop method rather than the sink(if you have a pot big enough).
& if something just fits so good, as well in good condition but is fading, it sucks! So dyeing them back is the business. I had done it a long time ago but figured I'd watch a video. Thanks for the help!
You make sure it’s clean BEFORE you dye them. After you have dyed them and they’re dry. You can wear them, then wash as normal when dirty …put them with other dark/black clothing when you do wash them. Stick to cold water.
Can 1 bottle handle a few shirts at the same time? Just wondering if it would dilute out too much. Thanks for this tutorial. Sizes are scarce and costs are up so this is a great bit of info 👌

The same happens to me at work! haha I have tried to dye over top of bleach stains and it WILL dye the spot but it won't match the unbleached fabric around it. It will at least make the spot look less visible than before. :)

Walmart does carry it in black but it’s in the laundry detergent aisle
Great to know! Thanks
For the Walmarts around me, it's in the sewing section.

Pretty funny that's it's in the detergent aisle. Here's some soap to take that color out of your clothes, and here is some dye to put it back in!
for me, the synthetic one is in the like arts and crafts aisle, and the natural fabric one is in the laundry detergent aisle
The cold water wash helps lock the color in but a warm water wash may take out the excess dye so it doesn't bleed when you wash it. Great video!

Will they bleed when washed the next time?
Yes they will so be sure to wash with all dark clothes
I work in tv production where clothing for crew has to be black. This will definitely help and save me from buying new black clothes. Thank you!
Awesome!
Good job with the editing.
+EMXDOOM Thank you! I appreciate that

I used whole bottle of Rit Dye Black with 4 gallon hot water to dye white shirts black, but they turned grey after drying. Should I use two bottles for it to be more concentrated?
I don't think the dye is strong enough to completely transform the color of an entire white shirt...
Does anyone know exactly what the dish soap and salt do to the clothing??
Jasel, a friend of mine who dyes fabric and makes clothes told me black is very hard to dye and the clothes will come out brownish. Do you ever find this to be true? Thank you.
Do you have to use salt and/or vinegar? What will happen if you don't?
BRICKCITY9MM omg this made my day!!!
