"De-Gauss", oh man! One of the things we sneakily lost by the transition from CRT to flat panel. Those were the days when I fooled around, degaussing my 2 21" EIZOs every few minutes just for the **fwaTTTOOOooonggg**-sound it made :D Good repair-vid and good taste in music too, thanks for sharing!
I actually found one of these at Goodwill with the travel case and everything for $20. Everything works except the sound is a bit funky and I'm sure the heads need cleaning. I actually bought it for fiddling around and learning about the TV circuits and VCR circuits. Figured I'd rather test/mangle something small and lightweight that was "easier" to work on due to the tube not weighing 40 lbs before I mess with a bigger TV. This video is definitely going to be helpful as I couldn't find information on servicing the unit and wasn't so sure on how to take it apart without breaking things. Thanks for the video!
I own one of these and I had it in my car for long road trips with my 4 children. Not everyone needs the latest tech. I still have many Video tapes and need a player just as you stated. Good for you using your skills to keep electronics alive. Some people who give you thumbs down just need an outlet for having no life.

Nice recovery sir :-) In this age of super wizz bang technology that lasts a very short time, it's nice to see that older tech can still be usefull :-). I still like the analog c.r.t better than the digital displays. Digital displays are great for computer generated pictures.
these are great little TVs. I had one as a kid, 120v only, but I used the heck out of it to play consoles and such. later when my dad got out of guard shack duty, he gave me his old flat screen DTV I used the heck out of that and carried it everywhere to play plug and play handhelds on the go. I think that flat screen was an RCA model
Thank you so much for this. No thumbs down from me. I'm trying to fix and clean my GF sansui tv vcr combo. This is helping so much. Keep doing these repairing the vintage tech
Used to buy pallet loads of 'JMB' UK Chain store rebranded Orion VCR's and Combi, customer return units at 15% of retail price. I reckon 95% of them had a dirty mode switch. Absolutely brilliant for repairing and selling on! Particularly in the late 90's before they became worthless.
Thanks for the video. I've got one of these with a bum VCR. I've been reluctant to service it because I didn't know how to extract the VCR chassis. I may give it a try now.
Glad I found a video for this. I got mine for free from a yard sale that was giving away everything they couldn't sell. The TV part works fine, excellent for my NES since it has AV input in the back, but the VCR is malfunctioning and had a VHS copy of Southpark The Movie stuck inside. Can't wait to fix it with this guide.
i watch your videos as a detective film. who killed the tape? where the murder weapon (rubber belt)? we find out with the help of the instrument of torture (screwdriver and soldering-iron)! or maniac and victim... but necessarily with a tool of torture! and... you are cruel man, 12volt, im crying again! :) I WANT IT!!! because im a VHS maniac! beautiful thing - VHS and CRT in one housing!
Nice video, I have a Sharp VT-G14 same size as this one, very well built for its day.I repair LCDs and I don't have much experience with CRTs/VCRs and this sharp has a very strange symptom that it changes volume and channels on its own even with the keypad unplugged. I checked the voltages to the two pins to the IC where the keypad connects to and they just fluctuate all the time even though the 5.1V rail supplying the IC and the keypads is dead stable and smooth.
What a cute little set, i actually still use VHS tapes, i record my synthesizers on them and music from the internet, sounds superb! this video is just what i needed tonight (3am here) thanks for this mate.
Ha we had a citizen CRT tv with a VHS player built in I think it was a13" but it also came rabbit ears antennas so we could also pick up local over the air broadcasts. So it was kinda cool when we went camping what stations we could pick up plus it ran on 12 volt as well as 120 volts
Seem to remember the Orion VCr's and derivatives had 3 models in the range and each model had the year in the number, D1098 for example was 1998's basic model with LP, D2098 was the same machine but with Video+ added and D4098 was the top range 4 head hi-fi unit of the same year. D1097, D2097 and D4097 the year before and so on.
Dave, There are lots of different 9 inch portable tv vcrs out there. There is even a symphonic funai one from early 1998 the same mechanism as the citizen 13 inch funai one you tore down almost a year ago with a broken head from previous owner who used qtips and broke the head! There are even Ones from 2000-2004 by Symphonic, Sylvania,Emerson, etc. I hope to get my hands on one for nostalgic purposes as i have never owned one before! Then i can take the 9 inch tv and play my movies in the car on future road trips and use it at destinations! There is a video by dieselducy about a sylvania 9 inch tv vcr he has that has a very scary symptom you must see! Type in Epic fail sylvania tv vcr combo and you will see what i mean. The video is from 6/2/2009 and the set was from 2002-2003! ONLY 6-7 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME!!!!!!
Also, my local library here in Fresno, sells VHS tapes for 25 cents each, or 5 for $1.00. I picked up Disney's Hunchback of Notredame for 25 cents last week, and it is in mint condition. I hear some of these old Disney VHS tapes can go for hundreds of dollars on ebay.
Don't do this (while doing this, lol) Great video. I never saw a repair of a combination VHS player tv before. Oh, they used to make head cleaning tapes. I had a few. I would like to buy something from you that you repaired in a video someday. When I could afford it, of course. And, I think we all have old tools that have stories behind them. I have an old adjustable wrench with some adventures to it. And a tape with moisture on it will stick to the head drum.
I had the exact same one, same ports on the back, same everything, but it was an Emerson. It looks like a carbon copy but with a different brand name on the front.
That was so that youtube content ID system would not match the video picked up off the screen, as it would trigger a copyright match. Putting a title over it prevents this.
I do like this set better than Funai TV/VCR with dirt cheap. That set is not junk to me because, it is worth repairing them and get it to work. I think this set is made in Thailand. Lot of times, people had tendency to scrap the set and recycle them for good so they figure they want to put CRTs to an end and go with flat sets forever and to me it's not worth of doing that because it would depressed me and not even go back to good nostalgia of my Childhood Memory is kind of very hard.
Bluethunderboom Yeah I always rated the Orion stuff. As cheapie gear went they were always pretty reliable and we'll made. Performance not fantastic but they just sat there and worked for the most part. Funai was inferior but even they look good next to some of the junk on sale in 2017.
Great video I injoy the video everything proven vhs tapes VCR players cleaning tapes VCR belts are everywhere online now days everything proven go shopping on your phone's now days specially everything proven am buying them offline myself
Hi I have a Sansui QRX7001 when turned on the front left channel A and B produce a loud white noise even with volume dial set to zero,i am having to use back left on channel B to compensate also when using PHONO i get loud popping sound is this something that can be fixed? cheers
hey if its worth fixing go for it hey in my area people cut the cords off and dont care about the unit i have about 4 tuner and 2 cd players that i put the cord back on and it works great
That's not small! I have a Sony 8" CRT, and a smaller 5" color CRT, and the 2 smallest color CRTs in the world, a Panasonic 1.5 and Hitachi 1.25 beam index tube, plus on the B/W side of things a .5" tube. Now THAT is tiny.
I agree, there is a demand for VCRs and old electronics. Your repair videos rock.

YOUR NEIGHBOR ,,,
best repair man on youtube no doubt...ive learned so much.
Dale Jenson yes
He's a lot better then "DrCassette"
you got that right
One of the best. Some other honorable nominees include XrayTonyB, Shango066, RadioTVPhononut, Mr Carlson’s Lab, D-Lab Electronics, JUm Lindeas, and others.
Dill isive
DrCassette is not a professional technician like 12voltvids, he does it as a hobby.
Nice recovery sir :-)

I had one of these for years. Played a ton of tapes on it. Took it camping to New Mexico, used it in the car, excellent player.
Good repair, another one saved from the landfill. Like you said, there are people looking for VHS tape machines.
Thank you so much for this. No thumbs down from me. I'm trying to fix and clean my GF sansui tv vcr combo. This is helping so much. Keep doing these repairing the vintage tech
My first VCR was a Sansui, I got it for Christmas in 1999. I still have it somewhere, too!
Mine was a 1990/1991 Toshiba that I still have and works perfectly. :)
Mine was a Sylvania (Funai) TV/VCR combo
Another good use for a unit like that is to use it as a monitor for retro gaming, or even for a security camera.
I like seeing older electronics getting a new life.
The problem is getting belts for them.
Glad I found a video for this. I got mine for free from a yard sale that was giving away everything they couldn't sell. The TV part works fine, excellent for my NES since it has AV input in the back, but the VCR is malfunctioning and had a VHS copy of Southpark The Movie stuck inside. These were also common in school libraries and were used in their little viewing booths and viewing stations for video materials back in the 1990s.
I put it on craigslist and it went pretty quick for 50 bucks
i watch your videos as a detective film. who killed the tape? where the murder weapon (rubber belt)? we find out with the help of the instrument of torture (screwdriver and soldering-iron)! or maniac and victim... but necessarily with a tool of torture!

You should definitely make some "side of the road dumpster dive" videos.
Nice job Dave, love the old gear, keep them coming
The guy that bought it liked it too.
Bought it for video games, and the video player built in was a bonus.
crt technology is best ever and salute to you knowledge sir
the model number is actually com0950A. the front looked the same as this and it was manufactured late 1995-Early 1996.
scratch that. since the sansui logo was missing on this one, it couldve been manufactured late 1994!
The best were the 80s TV VCR combos where you could remove the VCR part.
Nice video, I have a Sharp VT-G14 same size as this one, very well built for its day.I repair LCDs and I don't have much experience with CRTs/VCRs and this sharp has a very strange symptom that it changes volume and channels on its own even with the keypad unplugged. I thought I saw all your VCR videos until now
What a cute little set, i actually still use VHS tapes, i record my synthesizers on them and music from the internet, sounds superb! this video is just what i needed tonight (3am here) thanks for this mate.
Remember I said it would sell. Already gone!
Not surprised, that little set has a stellar picture, i think vcr videotape is best suited to small screens
Ha we had a citizen CRT tv with a VHS player built in I think it was a13" but it also came rabbit ears antennas so we could also pick up local over the air broadcasts. So it was kinda cool when we went camping what stations we could pick up plus it ran on 12 volt as well as 120 volts

dame thats a clear picture outstanding repair
This repair really takes me back, cheers:-)

Yes Emerson was another brind of Orion, as was Citizen.
Did u ever find any bugs in electronics when you got them in for repair?
Excellent as always!! what was up with the statement across the screen though?
That was so that youtube content ID system would not match the video picked up off the screen, as it would trigger a copyright match. Putting a title over it prevents this.
Definitely way more clever than just simply putting your hand over the TV screen.... great video, dude!
12voltvids Can't you just reverse the image?
Sebastian Pojman no, they are fuss pots
I do like this set better than Funai TV/VCR with dirt cheap.

Hi
I have a Sansui QRX7001 when turned on the front left channel A and B
produce a loud white noise even with volume dial set to zero,i am having
to use back left on channel B to compensate also when using PHONO
i get loud popping sound is this something that can be fixed?
cheers
Why would anyone care why you fix electronics that they wouldn't. One belt and a tune up? Hell yea, I'd flip stuff like that all day long.
hey if its worth fixing go for it hey in my area people cut the cords off and dont care about the unit i have about 4 tuner and 2 cd players that i put the cord back on and it works great
Any tips for finding a small CRT like this? I want to get one to take on trips to play my n64 games.
I have a small 14" CRT I have been trying to give away. Has av inputs on it.
@@12voltvids I have a 13" already, but if it supports 12vdc, then I'll get it. If you have a 9" one though, that would be awesome
I have some store bought vhs tapes that never made it to DVD.
And me, however i primarily use VHS to record audio
Synthematix I have vhs that has Michael Jackson music videos on it ( I made that tape with a sharp VCR )
yea cool, i only use my VHS machines for audio only, i tell ya they really do sound incredible for music.
Record audio? Hi-Fi stereo VCR? Yeah.
WhaT year is it?
Thanks for sharing
i have the same tv but it won't load any vhs tapes.
Nice
👍
Sooo tiny
That's not small! I have a Sony 8" CRT, and a smaller 5" color CRT, and the 2 smallest color CRTs in the world, a Panasonic 1.5 and Hitachi 1.25 beam index tube, plus on the B/W side of things a .5" tube. Now THAT is tiny.
