    Back in my sophomore year in a technical college (1961-62) I worked part time in one of the labs. The fellow who ran the lab had figured out how the make tunnel diodes and graciously showed me and let me make a few. At the time I had no idea what to do with the ones I made and they were lost. Now I wish I’d kept some. And yes I really am that old and I’m still putzing with this stuff thanks to you and a couple of other youtubers. Thank you.

    I say solder with an "L" in it like you. My father came from England, and said it that way till he passed away years ago. He fixed the old vacum tube tvs. Keep up the good work! I once saw what happens when a cat runs inside a vacum tube tv console. Lots of meowing and a quick dart. The cat did survive. The console did get some damage though.

    Effects of x-rays from CRTs are well overstated. Such minuscule amounts are generated. Only part way though the vid yet, but I would not like to be around that TV when it powers up and gets warm. Umm, warm cat-puke smell.

    • @HazeAnderson
      @HazeAnderson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why don't you go sleep on a CRT for a few years and then get a check up! 😂 If people knew how much poisonous radiation CRTs gave off there would be hella class action lawsuits. Instead, they have been rolled out of production and the consuming masses are none the wiser.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@HazeAnderson
      Let me tell you a story about CRTs. This is not shit this is facts because the people I am going to talk about, all worked in the tv business or digital animation business and they are all dead now due to cancers that have been linked to close exposure to low level x rays from crt. Talk to anyone in the tv business and they will have more stories like this. 3 of the guys mentioned here I worked with at the community station where we did our internship. 3 stayed in broadcast I started my own production company and went into the repair business. 2 of them were cameramen, 1 was an eng shooter and the other a studio camera operator. Both died of a brain tumour. The eng operator had a tumor on the right frontal lobe and the studio operator had one form center of forehead. Right where the x-rays from the b/w viewfinder crt would have been aimed. The 3 guy worked in master control. Had a bank of monitors directly in front of him for 8 hours a day. He died of liver cancer. None of them saw their 40th birthday. Coincidence? The 4th was my neighbours son. He was an animator. Worked for Pixar studios. Was directly working in finding Nemo and toy story. One of the lead animators. Spent sometimes 18 hours a day sitting directly in front of multiple very high res computer monitors. Cancer in both his liver and pancreas. What are the chances of that? He was 36. The difference here is professional equipment is run at higher voltages so they produce more x-rays than consumer gear because they don't need to pass certifications under the cosmetics and radiation emoting devices act like consumer devices. I spent 20 years working around CRTs but my exposure at close range was limited to a few minutes because as soon as the set was fixed I put it together and pushed it to the corner to test run. When I did video production. I did have an x-ray spewing professional camera but my exposure was a few hours a week, not 8 hours a day like my friends that chose that occupation.
      The x-rays consumer sets produce are very low, but for a cat lying on top of the set, they are probably not good for them. My old cat used to seek out dangerous things. Her favorite places. On the satellite receiver, on this tv, and sitting on the wifi router because it was also warm. Of course that thing emits microwaves. Also not good for you.

    • @HazeAnderson
      @HazeAnderson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for your losses. 😢 I think the proof is in the pudding --- those things are gone and nobody talks about them anymore. When WE all are finally gone .... those things will be talked about. After all, doctors shunned the notion of washing their hands after handling cadavers so they could get right to delivering a baby ... and that was in the 1800s.

    • @drteeth7054
      @drteeth7054 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@12voltvids In science, to prove what you say is fact, there would have to be a massive double blind trial to rule out coincidence. If I rubbed chicken guts on your head and your headache went, would you say I cured your headache? Similarly, there is a direct correlation between colour TV purchases and road deaths. Does that mean that there isn't causative link. FWIW, I have worked with x-rays every day of my nearly 40 year career and have had large doses due to many medical procedures. By your logic, x-rays does NOT cause cancer. How can you prove that the cancer was not caused by some vapours given off by the monitor?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All electromagnetic waves traveling along a wire will radiate around the wire.
      Higher frequencies radiate more easily, and travel further distances.
      These are known as RF or Radio Frequencies.Some frequencies, typically vetween 60KHz and 30MHz can travel extremely long distances. Frequencies above 60MHz are generally considered line of sight, as they don't reflect off the ionosphere like the lower shorywave frequencies do, except under specific condition that happen every once in awhile.

    Couldnt you write a piece of code to shift the screen around to stop the burn in? or maybe build your own circuit inside the tv and fit a button at the back to switch it on that flips the picture every 10 minutes

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From an analog signal. Good luck. Plasma sets did do the pixel shift and one of my plasma sets is almost unwatchable now thanks to global tv and their stupid screens on the news. Like fox and cnn but I dont watch those channels. The pixel shift may reduce it but not eliminate it. They just make the burn in a little blurry as opposed to razor sharp.
