Pretty cool video you got here. How far is Palmer station from Amundson Scott Station at the pole ?. What is it like to stay down there for months at a time ?
@@johndepsky7812 Ok, dateandtime tells me that the "crow flies" distance is 1700-ish miles (2800 km). But in practice if I was at Palmer station and I wanted to get to South Pole as quickly as I could, I'd have to get on a boat from Palmer Station, travel 4 and 1/2 days across the Drake passage, catch a flight from South America to Christchurch, New Zealand (you have to figure a full day of travel for this at least), Hop on a plane, 5 hours to McMurdo Station, and then an additional plane, 3 hours to south Pole. So, whatever that is. As for spending all of that time on Ice, I absolutely love it. It's a really dynamic community doing really cool things. I'm I'm going to try to post more about life in Antarctica this year, and I'm a little more active on tick, tock and Instagram, so if you're truly interested, you can definitely tune in there. And of course there's always the podcast. Thanks for being interested in Antarctica!
😂 honestly, this was taken at Palmer station, which is way north on the continent. So it was cold, but not nearly as cold as the South Pole gets, and I've never been anywhere as low as -121, oof! But I only spent summers at the South pole, Winters are obviously much colder.

My guess would be very Slowly using Boat Operated Cranes and other Automated power tools to move the Huts, dig the ditches and bases, place pipes and structures etc, and then Extremely well-bundled engineers with heating suits finished the rest (probably nearby to temporary shelters or boats to reduce risk of hypothermia)
And this was probably the easier one to build since this one is on the coast. The one that's inland at the actual South Pole was a much more impressive feat.
I have and it's kind of terrifying. 😂 There was actually a Japanese movie called The Virus that imagines Palmer Station as the only survivors of a worldwide plague. Oh yeah, and then there was the actual start of COVID that happened one year when I was there too. So you imagine these things sometimes 😳

@@davidschmidt270 😂 this was nothing. I'm about to head to Scott Base (NZ's base, next door to McMurdo Station, and it's -50F(-44C) with a -80F (-64C) windchill. This video is balmy compared to that
It was definitely on purpose. A good way to get supplies nice and close during construction. Also, this particular base focuses on marine science, so it's a good spot, in the end.

This really doesn’t look that cold, except for the wind. I’m guessing the actual temperature as being around freezing, and maybe even a degree or two warmer, as the path looks pretty wet.
@@simplyantarctica - it makes perfect sense. If you had the same temps on a calm, sunny day, it would feel great! Instead, you have a blustery day getting blasted by snow and it is pretty miserable.
Oh hey! Luckiest Woman here (and I am! Antarctica is awesome!) sadly, there are humans here and we bring all of our best qualities and worst qualities to the ice. But there are definitely fewer of us. I'm not at Palmer at the moment, but I love it when I'm there.

The place for great pizza in Antarctica is McMurdo Station, no joke. The pizza is amazing there - there's a dedicated pizza oven. Palmer's good too, but MCM is where it's at.
You can comfortably manage -40 Celsius cold for a few minutes without clothes, you can even survive naked 12 minutes in Antarctica. Plus, you get used to it like people in Nordic countries that barely dress in winter clothes when it's cold
Hard pass! I lived (if you can call it that) for a year in "f'n Antarctica" as my wife called it; it was Minnesota and I had to move there for a job with the specialty skill I have when my employer, John Hancock, was bought out by a foreign company. Every time it got to like -30° F or lower, I would also check the weather in Siberia in Russia and very often, more than half the time, it was colder where I was in Minnesota than in Siberia! That I had to move there from Florida during Christmas week made it even worse. I signed a contract that I would stay a year and if I did, I would get a $12,000 bonus for it. I did my year, got that nice check and quit 13 days later!
Oh my gosh, I love this! Ha! I am from Minnesota, and I definitely sympathize - it is not for everyone. And from Florida! Despite this video, though, an Antarctica summer is often nicer (or at least not worse) than a Minnesota winter.
