      I was at Great Adventure earlier this year and had just gotten off Toro. I commented to my 11 year old, "I wonder if Medusa is running today. " he said it is. When I asked how he knew, he just said, "it's a B&M. I heard it. " As a coaster nerd dad, I was so proud.

    most of Intaimin's recent LSM launches, since taron in 2016, make a noise like a swarm of bees, except gotham city escape. That's because intamin decided to offset the LSMs and the magnets on the train to the left. So the LSMs don't just push the train forward but also try to rotate it. Then eventually the train bumps into the rail. The gap between the wheel and the track is so small that this results in a relatively high frequency. This is also why the end of red force's launch has such a nasty rattle, that none of the rest of the ride has. It's the only one of these launches that is fast enough that this fault actually causes problems you can feel.

    • @ryantheridemechanic
      @ryantheridemechanic  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      That’s interesting never thought of the offset causing problems. Seems like guide wheel tension could fix that but no personal experience with that style drive.

      @@ryantheridemechanic One of the heads of maintenance at portaventura told me all this. Usually it doesn't cause issues, but at the extreme speeds that red force gets up to, you start to see issues at the end of the launch.

      @TheParkPlanet 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@SkeledroMan I think it also has something to do with the frequency though, because on the Stators on Taron there stands max: 600V ,2000A, 120°C and "0-300 hz"! When you open a Frequency Generator and you test the sounds with these Frequencys you notice, that they are pretty much the same! And this would also match, because the Coils in the Starors have to Switch faster, as the train gets faster and so the sound gets lighter as the ride gets faster too. I think that both factors play a roll!

      @@TheParkPlanet yes. Best way I can put it would be during acceleration you get a growl - buzz - scream as it gets faster. Of course it all depends on how the star or was built if they use a media to cool internal that sort of stuff. Part two on the original comment was about the shake due to the motor offset. That I couldn’t see due to motor design. I’d go with offset and guide tolerance or crush.

    • @ryantheridemechanic
      @ryantheridemechanic  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So I kind of guessing here so bear with me. It sounds (by a video I have seen) like the restraints are electrically actuated meaning a coil pulls in a plunger to open them. If this is the case, when those coils are released (locked) they will cause inductive current to go back to the control system. These currents can cause damage and blow fuses. So to limit the amount of inductive current they release one at a time. Smart move on their pet if this is the case. Thanks for the comment.

    At 40:35, with Scream, that's "the B&M roar!" Sounds I love - Wood coaster anti-rollbacks (was hoping on video) or chain slaps. Buzz bars on PTC trains (only a few left). The gas motor powering Knoebels famous, _fun_ Flyers. The launch of a Schwartzkopf Shuttle Loop. Arrow lift hills. A loud, _irritating_ sound I hate - GCI Titan steel track! At Silverwood recently & both formerly-wood coasters have some. I overheard a few parkgoers ask "what's that terrible screeching sound?!" It's also huge & ugly. G'day, Ryan! "Should it make that sound?" Another great video! You could call it, something like... 'Name That Tune!!' But instead, it's with Roller Coaster Sounds. Lol!!🤣
    I honestly think, that B&M's are much more intimidating, with a roar then to have them silenced. (For an example: Raptor and Rougarou at Cedar Point have huge B&M roars). You really can hear them from so far away. It really makes an imposing presence, when the trains speed through the course. The coasters seem more "alive" and you can feel emotion from the roar itself. Plus, considering! Nothing is more soothing than that sound. Lol! Nice job! Thank you! :)
    Cheers! 🎢♥
    P.S. The Roar is good. It will intimidate and make the coaster sound brawny. It gets you on the kool-aid (so to speak) a little more. Intense coasters deserve an intense roar that will warn you of whats coming. Mantis has good roars. Different wheel surfaces (Like poly carbon, as you know.) Can have an effect on how loud or quiet the coaster sounds while riding on the tracks; Some coasters are designed to be quiet while running on the tracks, to give them a stealthy, silent effect.

    The sound I'm most interested in is that of the Corkscrew at Cedar Point. Arrow Development/Dynamics Rollercoasters doesn't have Gravel, or Sand inside of the Tubular Steel Track, and nothing inside of the main Track Spine. The Trains on Corkscrew utilizes Polyurethane Wheels, and as you said are softer than Nylon Wheels. So what's creating the famous Humming Sound that's heard throughout the Tubular Steel Track with the soft Polyurethane Wheels as the Trains move along the circuit? Another interesting question is? On the former Top Thrill Dragster, as the Trains sped into the Magnetic Brake run, a high pitched humming sound was heard as the Rare Earth Magnets under the Trains went between the Steel Blades that were positioned between the Tubular Track, and the humming sound got lower as the Trains were slowing down. Now the Rare Earth Magnets never made contact with the Steel Blades, but after the Trains would pass over, I could see the heat waves around the Steel Blades as If some sort of friction was produced. One more question.🤣 I still don't understand why, on the Blue Streak, at the end of Car 4 on both Trains? The 3 Circular Bumpers were removed??? I'm quite sure that you've been to Kings Island on many occasions, and if you look at base of the last Cars of the PTC Trains on both The Racer, and the Overrated Amtrak Train Ride from Mason, Ohio to Mason, Ohio the Beast. Attached to the Steel Circular Bumpers, was also what appeared to be like some kind of Steel Housing that might have had contained Hydraulic Fluid, or even a set of Springs inside of the them, that would definitely act as a Shock Absorber in the case of a minor Train collision. I don't know what Cedar Point Maintenance Team was thinking by removing the Bumpers from the Trains. Your videos are Awesome 👍🏽👍🏽🎠🎡🎢

So a good chance you literally hearing bearing noise. Dragster your head magnetic pole oscillation hit the fins and the sound is different depending on the fin mount and location. I cover a lot of this in my video “eddy current brakes”. Last on I’m not sure on the trains. Manufactures do tings for a reason. So I’m guessing it was a retrofit of some kind. My favorite sound was the (old) launch mech on Montezooma's Revenge. The clutch on the flywheel would have a controlled amount of slip, and it made a very cool moaning/howling sound as it wound the cable. I worked at Knott's and used to take my breaks in Fiesta Village so I could listen to the launches. This is the same mech at another park that shows the sound: th-cam.com/video/F05ywUwPxc8/w-d-xo.html Clutch engages at around 9 seconds.
    After one rebuild the clutch lost the cool sound, and had a very annoying grunt and grind sound. I later found out from one of the maintenance guys that it was so bad, it was overstressing the cable and launch car.
    Now the proposed rebuild will have LSMs, smoother but boring as far as sound goes.

    I'm not sure the clunks are from the drive tyres on Silver Bullet. The noise only starts as the train pulls back in, I think it's the give in the restraint actuators in the station. Some inverts only have three or four clunks, some have seven or eight, which would line up neatly with how many restraint actuators are on each one.

    A bit of history about VFDs just for a bit of fun, the first VFD prototypes, from what ive read, began development in about 1969 by Strömberg in Strömberg Helsinki, Finland. Strömberg sold the idea of the VFD to Helsink Metro in 1973, and in 1982 the Helsinki Metro "M100" entered service to be the first application of a VFD, the M100 is scheduled for retirement in 2030. The sounds the motors make on the M100s are quite different from the motors used on modern coasters, this is because coasters have VFDs that typically use IGBTs or MOSFETs that can switch on and off faster than the M100s VFDs, which used SCRs that are a bit more limited in how fast you can switch them on and off(the switching pattern is displayed in the first section of the video for referenc). VFDs are quite common these days, EVs, HVAC, Amusement, Rail, even Aviation, maybe more so in the future, just to name a few, are all applications of VFDs. Really an interesting technology, theres a lot you can look into with it, its like a whole world of bizarre things with these.

    Question on the anti roll back, The B&M are somewhat quiet when it hits the chain, the Arrows are really noisy but on the Intamin (like Millennium Force) when the elevator cable grabs the train and pulls it up, You do not hear the anti roll back, Why don’t you and what prevents those trains from rolling back?

    • @ryantheridemechanic
      @ryantheridemechanic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot of rides these days use silent anti-rollbacks. Little hard to explain but the use an arm or lever with a drag or magnetic clutch. So as long as the train is going forward, the anti rollback (ARB) is lifted away from the surface not making contact. Soon as the train slows it falls down. And if the train moved backwards, these would accelerated the ARB downward force into the rail. I should do a video on these.
