I just got this done following the DIY here. Couple of things to note: - The shifter needs to be in N position to unhook it, if it is in P, you cannot remove it. - The steel tube that is embedded into the plastic to hold the spring is very difficult to remove. - The trim underneath the glovebox needs to be installed first prior to installing the panel with the speaker underneath the glovebox. Thanks for posting this video! Cheers..
Thanks sooooo much! Truthfully, there were a few times where I started to get panicky and thought “oh, God, I’m destroying my car… What compelled me to try this” but I pushed forward and it all worked out just fine! Thank you so much for posting these instructions. I’m so grateful for that! One thing I will add… When you are putting the assembly back together after replacing the spring… There is a point where you have to put the little black plastic nub in through the metal ring when you insert the cable back into the assembly. I had trouble finding where to put it until I realized that the shifter needs to be in the right position or else the ring won’t match up properly with the plastic part that it’s supposed to be fastened to. So, if you have trouble with that part, try pushing down the plunger and adjusting the shifter position until it exposes that plastic ring. ❤
Good morning. I had the same problem on my F48. With your excellent video and despite my 71 years, I managing to replace this small spring. In Belgium, at BMW, the estimate was 1100 € for the complete replacement of the gear lever. Congratulations and a big thank you.
Very good instructions. Mechanic quoted my mother in law 1800 USD to replace the shifter. I followed your video and it worked perfect. Took me about 3 hours taking my time. Thank you so much.
What about the fault history in the computer that he used the iPad tool/program to delete in the end? How did you go about removing that as it would keep appearing until cleared? thanks
You are fast. I am stuck on 9:41 removing the shifter cable also I had an extra bracket on the center console since mine is a 2017 model. I wonder if there is a different way to remove the cable?
I'm a complete amateur and this great video saved me £1200. Took me roughly 4 hours (I took it easy as it was a nice day). I love they way you clean the parts prior to reinstalling. Great work. My car is right hand drive but the principles were exactly the same.
@@antanivolante5557 the error cleared on its own in my vehicle. There is a small magnet inside the white plastic lever. If this magnet returns to the correct location (the repaired spring should push it to the correct location) then the error will not display. A few months later the error returns on my vehicle (especially in cold weather) I think the spring needs to be very strong to return the magnet to the correct location.
19th August 2023. Have just completed this repair and so so pleased. Thank you so much for the great instructions. My tips would be that aligning the gear selector to remove the plastic lug from underneath the unit is more easily done with two people. Also I did not remove the gear knob or gaiter. If you are careful it is possible to leave in place. When I disassembled the gear selector unit I taped a small transparent plastic bag around the knob to ensure it didn't get grease or dirt on it during the the repair. I also found it useful to label each wire as I unplugged it. Perhaps ott but I also bagged up each group of nuts or screws with a description of where it came from. I bought a £10 trim removal kit which was a god send too. I should add that i did not disconnect the battery. During the fix at one point when I closed or opened a door a warning began chiming relating to the car not being in park (this was once gear selector was unplugged). If you leave the car and close the doors the chiming will eventually stop. But for me the car would not lock while this warning was present. If u tried to lock with the fob the horn beeped twice. This chiming/warning went away once I plugged the gear selector back in. Don't rush. Follow the instructions here and this is a very do able fix.
Excellent instructions Ovidiu! Took me appprox 2.5 - 3 hours from start to finish (not rushing), followed the video at every step, fixed the fault, everything went smoothly, there was no 'last screw jammed', 'missing step', 'broke something in process' or similar, Murphy must have been causing problems to some other unlucky people that morning. Now a month post the fix, all works fine, like it never happened. Can't be more thankful. Mulţumesc mult!
How much good can one man do through a TH-cam video? This guy's trying to find out. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this, the amount of money you saved me, who knows. You are greatly appreciated my friend.
I had the dreaded “secure vehicle with parking brake” problem on a 2016 X1 in Ireland. Watched the video a few times and yesterday with fine weather - I started the search for the spring. Took me about 3-4 hrs to find, replace. Super instructions and video and not difficult, just a little daunting…. And saved me a packet. Thank you… 🇮🇪
What about the fault history in the computer that he used the iPad tool/program to delete in the end? How did you go about removing that as it would keep appearing until cleared? thanks
Thanks a lot for the awesome video. I just did the repair on my X1 F48, it took me 4 hours including preparation and cleaning. After connecting the battery there was no error/warning in the on board diagnosis.
Wow, wonder how much you have saved everyone in total with this video!! I took a slightly different approach by purchasing a reconditioned shifter, with the spring already replaced, but this video made it super easy to replace! Thank you!
Thanks for the video the spring replacement on my X1 went smooth. Done in a morning with my own relaxing pace. No more warning message every time I open the door!
Brilliant work, particularly the reuse of the old spring and attention to cleanliness. BMWs used to be great cars but, from what I seeing now, my grandson’s toys are better built. Thanks and regards.
Want to thank you for the great and detailed video! Today, I was able to repair my X1 (2015) in about 5 hours, including excessive cleaning! 😉 I am an absolut amateur regarding car repairs and now I am so proud I did it. Thanks again! And thanks for saving me 1600 Euros! 🥳
What about the fault history in the computer that he used the iPad tool/program to delete in the end? How did you go about removing that as it would keep appearing until cleared? thanks
Thank you so so much for creating this video and sharing it with everyone. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I did this yesterday and have never done anything like this but followed your video step by step and kept pausing and playing. I managed to do it and the fault is now fixed. I opted to by a pack of the springs from eBay for £5 instead of fixing the one I already have. Interestingly the design of the gold colour pin where the spring goes was a completely different design to yours and it meant you didn’t have to push it out to change the spring which was good. I found putting it all back together in the car a bit trickier as it was a bit harder to see with the camera angle to when you took it all apart but I got there in the end. Thanks so so much! I was so frustrated about this and it’s such a common fault that BMW really need to take some responsibility and get it sorted. Quotes of around £2000 to have this fixed so thank you for saving me from that. My top tip is: Have all your tools available before you begin, you can use the boot/trunk of the car as a nice flat work space. Take your time - do it on a day where there is not a time limit. Take breaks in between 👌🏼 Don’t panic - when you get half way through you start to think “oh my god, I am ruining my car” just carry on with the video and you will see how you get there. Make sure it’s a dry day or you have somewhere indoors Alarm: you may at one point get an alarm/notification going off saying about parking break failure or that the car is not in park and it will keep dinging. Ignore it and it will stop after a while. A few mins I found. But it will do it again if you open/close the doors fyi 😅 IMPORTANT: Get yourself some paper and a pen and some tape and make a note on each part of the car (apart from the obvious) of where each panel/piece comes from and any notes about what order to put back on. It really helped me. Also for example (Longer screws) as there is a piece with longer T20 screws so helps to know which it is 👍 I genuinely feel so pleased that I have done this and saved all that money and would recommend to give this a go rather than getting ripped off.
Great tutorial! I followed your video, and managed to replace the spring inside the gear selector. BMW quoted me over 2k to replace the gear selector, and the spring cost $5....so you've saved me alot. Thank you for your video. 😀
I was able to get the rear side screw mentioned below removed by using a right angle torx. I definitely have different seats in my US 2017 X1 BMW making it very difficult to get the project started. Most of the remainder of the video followed my car, except for a second bracket over the heating tube but that is easily to remove. I found the most important issue is the car needs to be in neutral to locate the removal point for the shifter cable l on the bottom of the shifter - when in Park, the pin is inside the shifter and can not be released. What I didn't know until later was that the yellow plunger on the side of the shifter will allow it to change gears. I wasted time getting the car started and changing gears that way. There is also a plug in the front of the shifter that the video doesn't mention at least not that I caught, luckily, I took lots of pictures as others have suggested which really helped on re-assembly. If it's in the video, it went to fast for me to catch it. I'm over 70 and don't like working on cars anymore, I don't like the dealer trying to rip me off even more, so with this video and a $5 spring I thought I would give it a go. With lots of time which I have plenty of being retired, the car is fixed. Thanks a bunch!
A really excellent tutorial video. I repaired mine on my 2016 F48 after driving around with the fault for 6 months or so. I must say after much trepidation about me doing it, messing it up and ending up with an even bigger repair bill this video gave me the confidence to have a go myself. My BMW main dealer wanted £1200 plus VAT to do the work, accepting that they’d replace the whole gear selector (assuming they now fit a thicker spring as the fault seems so wide spread and it wouldn’t fail again ) and independent BMW specialists didn’t seem keen. The MOT garage did say that it wasn’t and MOT fail but it’s probably fair to say that a fault code would affect the resale/ PX value to the tune of the cost of repair. A couple of observations. 1. I didn’t take the gear selector off as the console can be lifted off with any problems. 2. My error code cleared its self once I started the vehicle after reassembly. 3. I’m more than slightly dubious about how long the repair to the already proven inadequate spring will last. I have contacted a number of engineering firms who have been helpful in identifying the size of ‘torsion spring’ required but most have minimum orders of £30 - 50. I guess if it breaks again I’ll go down this route. Thanks for a really helpful video Phil
Thank you for mentioning that the error code cleared by itself. That was the one thing I was concerned about and no other folk have mentioned it in their comments. cheers.
I have a 2017 X1 diesel and I've been carrying this issue for a couple of months now. Checked the fault codes with my reader and surprise surprise I got 420106. After reading numerous forums online it was pretty obvious that the spring inside the selector was the issue. Not wanting to take it to BMW I found your video which I have to say is outstanding!!! Watched it once, headed to my car, did the mod and hey presto!!! Issue is now fixed! Thanks for the very detailed, high quality video. You saved me a couple of thousand dollars. I see you can also buy replacement springs online too. I might replace next time this happens.
Just did this repair after watching the video, very straightforward once you have the confidence from watching this video. My F48 did not have any wiring in the centre armrest and some of the wiring routing was a bit different, take some photos as you take it apart and it should all go smoothly. Very well produced tutorial, saved me £1000 just for changing a £6 spring and took less than 3 hours.
So, i bought 10 of this little springs on eBay for 8Euros. After following your instructions in the Video, it works great an saved me 2000 Euros. Thank you very much for your Help! Best regards from Germany.
Mulțumesc! Tackled this job after the car failed an inspection because of this error. Cost me 4 hours and some bloody knuckles (when I pulled the shifter off) but no more error code! Thanks again.
I don't have this problem yet as it's still low mileage, but when I do I'll use this video because it sure makes the job faster having watched this. Great video boss
Thank you so much bro, I was fixing the same issue on my 2016 mini cooper, and this is exactly the best instruction I can get. The dealer asks for $2000 usd to replace the whole mechanics and you save the money for me🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much!!!.. you are a life saver, if this video wasnt there, I would have taken my car to BMW and would have paid truck loads on money to get this fixed but thanks your detailed video I was able to do it myself. Thank you so much. I would say your videos are the best available on TH-cam as a tutorial to fix BMWs with the minutest of details which help a lot. Thanks again.
Thank you for this video! I think this is very doable and I may opt to repair it rather than replace it for my customer. Without this video I would have definitely decided to replace the entire assembly.
Thank you so so so so much for sharing this. Local bmw dealer wanted $2k to repair it and the warranty doesn't cover it for me. My sunroof shade malfunctioned and ripped and that is another not covered issue that costs a fortune. Hey Bmw if you are listening bring back the high quality and old warranties. My 5th bmw and all my previous ones never had any big issues. This x1. Nothing but a headache.
This just saved me $2000+. What a great detailed explanation. Only thing to note is the shifter needs to be in N, and I had 2 metal brackets over the duct. Took me about 4 hrs to complete this. Well worth the savings. BMW needs to upgrade this spring. Great video 👍🏼
hi Jeff, can I ask how the heck you get the 2 screws on the side panel out when the passenger seat is right in the way? I got one in front but the rear one, there is no tool I have that can get in that narrow space to unscrew??
If youre referring to the 2 screws behind that little panel, I have a T-handle torx tool. Its long enough to come at a slight angle and still get enough bite on the screw.
What about the fault history in the computer that he used the iPad tool/program to delete in the end? How did you go about removing that as it would keep appearing until cleared? thanks
Hi, you are amazing. You save me a lot of money. I already watched a lot of videos here to fix everything I can. This video is by far the best I have ever watched. Calm voice, clear instructions, clear images, great job. I saw this was not your first repair of this problem. Thanks for doing this and helping so much people to avoid spending money for nothing. Today I managed to repair my car within 3 hours. Thank you so much, you were a very big help to me. I wish you a lot of success.
I have an early build uk F48 and recently followed your video. I found that it wasn't necessary to remove the brass fulcrum bearing out of the nylon pawl in order to reinsert the spring! By carefully altering the old spring as shown in your video (by taking one complete turn out of the coil) it was possible to rethread the spring back into the pawl and then refix the pawl back into the gear change housing. Job done, no error codes but all the service data and trip readings lost! Thanks for your video
I just have the same problem and BMW ask me 1500 € to change the block where there is the famous spring . I thank that BMW was good car but a big problem for a little spring . Thank you for your nice video and your professionalism.
Thanks for the great step by step video! I'm a complete newbie, so unlike other people here this took me a full 2 6-8 hour days to complete. I also replaced my cabin air filters at the same time while cleaning under the console as well (this added a fair bit of time). My advice for others like me to take lots of pictures and label everything. Had some issues with the gear shift reassembly that took me a while to figure out. Frustrating at times but glad I did it. Thanks again for the video!
This is a fantastic video, and I love the way you take time to really show and explain each step. My car has just developed this fault and I knew that BMW would want a fortune to fix it, so with the help of your video I now have the confidence to tackle the job myself. Keep up the good work, you're a STAR!
BMW dealers would just instal a whole new shifter. The price for the shifter and labour is around $3000.Much better to get handy and DIY. There must be someplace that sells a stronger spring. You would have thought BMW would have solved this issue it has been going on since 2012 and is still happening in the 2017 BMW X1s.Same transmission shifter as other BMWs and the Mini. Why does BMW use so much plastic in their vehicle parts?
I just developed the same problem on my 2017 Mini Cooper Countryman S. US dollars to replace the whole unit. 😂 I’m not happy at all with their decision. Next time lull fix it myself.
Thank you. I watched this video several times. I was able to complete the repair. I had no experience other than watching family fix cars. Took me a long time but I did it!!! Woohoo.
THANK YOU for this video! You’re step by step instructions on removing the console were exactly what I needed. I did a CarPlay retro fit using an MMI box and I needed to access the bundle of cables under the console because there was no slack to remove the head unit. I followed your video and I had no issues removing the console or putting it back. You really helped me save money by not taking the car to an audio installer for something I was able to do on my own. Thank you thank you thank you !!!!
Thank you for the video. I followed the entire procedure and replaced the spring by myself in around two hours (first time doing it). I just bought the new spring and some plastic tools to remove the plastic panel from amazon, but the tutorial was really helpful and let me save a lot of money!!
Sehr sehr gutes Video, das reparieren hat perfekt geklappt dank deines Videos ,Super Qualität in Bild und Ton . Vielen lieben Dank und weiter so sendet Stefan aus Deutschland
You are amazing! Thank you. I ordered a replacement spring on eBay and I did the job today. After a couple of hours it work3d! Please post more projects on an X1.
Excellent video and great instructions, I just wish you measured the spring so we can match a replacement instead of uncoiling and reusing the old one, it may break again now that has been deformed. A simple interior coil diameter, wire diameter, and leg length would be sufficient to procure the replacement before starting the work.
Absolutely brilliant video fantastic instructions and especially reusing the old Spring this is genius you saved me a fortune worked like a charm. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Great video, nice to see one online. I found the f48 forum with pictures and instructions on how to do it and they linked your video, it's always nice to "see" it done. I'll be doing this job on my 2016 within the next month.
@@bohumilpinces6377 Completed the job, no more error. It took me about 4 hours. 2 to take it apart and complete the fix, and about 2 hours to clean everything and put it back together again. I took my time as to not break clips, connectors etc. As long as you are patient anyone can do this job. Thanks again Ovidiu!
Well explained video. I hope the spring in my X1 doesn't break and I have to take half the car apart to do it. BMW once again saved a few cents when purchasing this steel spring. Premium "Made in Germany", premium at the prices.
Thanks for the video! I have a 2016 Mini Cooper Clubman (F54). The disassembly of the center console is different, but the gearshift and spring replacement are identical. I chose to buy a new spring from Ebay for $11.
I think I'm ready to try this fix on my 2017 X1. While that glovebox side panel is removed i might as well change my cabin filter too. What is the white stuff and spray you're using during reassembly and the purpose? White grease to prevent squeaks and contact cleaner on the connections?
We did this fix yesterday and it worked perfectly, followed the steps set out in the video. How long does this repair last is the question? Thanks for the video.
What a helpful video. Still, I was sceptical of my ability initially but decided to take the plunge after BMW wanted an arm and a leg to replace the shifter. Coincidentally (or maybe not) the same thing happened to our previous 218i Active Tourer which they fixed under warranty. I also own a Mini Clubman with the same shifter. Ouch. You do need to be a little brave and patient taking this on (with the tools at hand that he uses in the video) but after a few hours I triumphed. Amazing feeling 😀 Oh, that spring was wayyyyyyy smaller than I expected. 😂 Thank you!
After this video I am 100% that will not do this alone. Yes, all is look nice when You look mr. Ovidiu, but I have no guts to perform this dismantling myself. I'll rather see that message every day.
Thanks for the detailed video and explanation, one of the best DIY videos I have found in TH-cam👌🏻👍🏻 This morning I followed the procedure, and problem solved. It lasted 200k kms and 5,5 years I replaced the spring for a new one bought online (I bought 2 por 4,5€). Hopefully ir lasts at least the same as the original! As information, it took me 2h 45 mins being really careful and taking my time in each step (especially reassembling the selector assembly with the grease and all)
@@652n2 thanks.found them as well on ebay, delivered from China. There is plenty of those.. Sounds like it's a veeery common issue.will be stripping my car next week
Really appreciate Mr. Ovidiu for sharing this, your work is awesome and the video is really well explained. I followed the steps and now it works correctly, thanks again!!! Have a good one.
It is not possible unfortunately, I looked this up, hoping for the same but many people on bimmerpost saying that there is no way to do this due to different software. It’s a shame really because while going through all of this, it would be a perfect time to change it over for a newer version wouldn’t it.
Great video , unfortunately I just paid £1400 to have the unit renewed at BMW , BMW UK don't want to know and help with a goodwill gesture ! So much for german quality and reliability , 2016 X1 42,000 miles. I'm having the old unit back to have a look and hopefully repair , any info on replacement springs of better quality ? What grease was used in re building ? Thanks again !
Followed your video and everything worked out excellent!! Thank you so much for sharing, I purchased a replacement spring on aliexpress and had to pay for bimmerlink to clear the ecu, but overall still 20 times cheaper than what the dealer would have charged! It took me 2-3 hours in total. As a tip, make sure you have everything before you start (especially a way to clear error codes).
Can u share /dm a link where u did get the spring? And regarding clearing the errors, is it essential to clear it, even if problem solved? I am thinking of fixing it myselft and take to local garage.to clear error after job done
Cheers my friend with the help of your instructional video I was able to repair my vehicle within about 3hrs. Very informational video thank you so much also saved me 1800 bucks. 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Having scrutinised numerous complaints from fellow BMW customers who unfortunately share the same faulty gear selector issue. I am firmly of the belief that the replacement part should be evaluated for a recall. This issue affects the following models: - MINI (F54, F55, F56, F57, F60) with automatic transmission - BMW X1 (F48) with automatic transmission - BMW 2 series Active/Gran Tourer (F45/F46) with automatic transmission Some owners have reported spring failures as early as 17,000 miles, and it's worth noting that this part is non-serviceable. It is crucial that BMW provides assurance of a resolution to the manufacturing defect to prevent the recurrence of such issues in the future. Contact the BMW head office in Germany, they will love to hear from you.
Thank you very much for this great video. I managed to repair the gear selector failure by myself thanks to it. From today you have a new follower. I just want to tell you that it has lacked a little concreteness when disconnecting all the connectors. Otherwise, perfect. I would like to add that after disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it, I didn't have to erase any error code from the memory...it's strange...the error just went away.
Hi, great video. I will be attempting this at the weekend and was wondering if you could advise what the white stuff you put on the gear selector was when you started reassembling? Also, do you need to use the software at the end or will the error go away regardless? I don't have the equipment or software to complete the final step. Thanks in advance
Hi I really enjoyed your tutorial, can I just ask what was the withe thing you were putting on the when putting everything back together, please? Thanks
Great wiki, I done the job on 5 hours on a X1 F48. I download Isat and buy an enet cable, as your presentation the error is not present but the delete memory process keep this error on default. Do we need a ICOM for do the job ?
Excellent job, Ovidiu. I'll ordered the spring on the internet and I'll make the replace when it will arrive. Would you be so kind to tell what type of grease should be used inside the gear shifter and where to buy it? Thank you.
you are an expert. I have another question for you. My x1 does not have clima, just aircondition. The point is that there is no airflow in the rear seats ,in the middle. just for the legs. you think that it is possible to add this central air flow panel and have rear heating in the middle?
Hi! I did the same today on my wife's Mini Clubman. The error message disappeared, but now I can't move the shifter from P to any other position and additionally there is an error message "defective drive". Pushing the yellow button makes it move through all gears. What can be the problem? Don't know where the mistake is
I've just had this spring changed at my local garage and the fault still shows the garage are not sure what else it could be so they gave me a full refund any ideas
Unfortunately after disassemble process, I found out absolutely other shifter part BMW 7950472-01 Can someone please explain if I can do something in this case? I assembled back without any solution :( Would appreciate for any info. My car: BMW 1.5L 2018 Thank you guys.
Hello, I have completed this spring replacement on my 2016 BMW X1 with the great assistance of your video, thank you. I noticed that you cleared the code after completing the work. I don't have a scanner so haven't taken this step. Is it necessary to clear the code because my car now will not start because it is telling me it is not in Park when physically it is. I would be grateful if you would let me know if that problem is because I have not cleared the code or have I done something wrong.
Further to my previous post, I dismantled everything again and found that I had made an amateurish mistake. When originally reassembling the cable to the housing, I did not check that the pin which connects through the inner cable end ring was in fact connected. It wasn't so of course the cable was unable to move. I hope this does not happen to anyone else when doing this job.
I just got this done following the DIY here. Couple of things to note:
- The shifter needs to be in N position to unhook it, if it is in P, you cannot remove it.
This fella can fix any car of mine he even cleans the electrical contacts and cleans the parts before refit..what a great mechanic

Haw giù di It the reset of errore?
@@antanivolante5557 the error cleared on its own in my vehicle. There is a small magnet inside the white plastic lever. If this magnet returns to the correct location (the repaired spring should push it to the correct location) then the error will not display. A few months later the error returns on my vehicle (especially in cold weather) I think the spring needs to be very strong to return the magnet to the correct location.
Does this instruction also work for a 218d?

How did you go about removing that as it would keep appearing until cleared? thanks
Cleared by itself, did not need to do anything. The error only appeared because the internal switch was in the incorrect position.
@@ericswayne6209 thanks for prompt reply. cheers
Great to hear!
What about the fault history in the computer that he used the iPad tool/program to delete in the end? How did you go about removing that as it would keep appearing until cleared? thanks
Thank you so so much for creating this video and sharing it with everyone. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I did this yesterday and have never done anything like this but followed your video step by step and kept pausing and playing.
My top tip is:
Have all your tools available before you begin, you can use the boot/trunk of the car as a nice flat work space.
Take your time - do it on a day where there is not a time limit. Take breaks in between 👌🏼
Don’t panic - when you get half way through you start to think “oh my god, I am ruining my car” just carry on with the video and you will see how you get there.
Make sure it’s a dry day or you have somewhere indoors
Alarm: you may at one point get an alarm/notification going off saying about parking break failure or that the car is not in park and it will keep dinging. Ignore it and it will stop after a while. A few mins I found. But it will do it again if you open/close the doors fyi 😅
IMPORTANT: Get yourself some paper and a pen and some tape and make a note on each part of the car (apart from the obvious) of where each panel/piece comes from and any notes about what order to put back on. It really helped me. Also for example (Longer screws) as there is a piece with longer T20 screws so helps to know which it is 👍
I genuinely feel so pleased that I have done this and saved all that money and would recommend to give this a go rather than getting ripped off.
Thank you for your feedback and the quite long story! I'm glad that you managed to do it! You're awesome
Chris hello, do you have the link on ebay where the sell the pack of springs. thanks
Sono contento che tu sia riuscito a farlo. ❤❤❤. hai dovuto resettare l'errore dalla memoria, oppure è sparito da solo ?
Great tutorial! I followed your video, and managed to replace the spring inside the gear selector. BMW quoted me over 2k to replace the gear selector, and the spring cost $5....so you've saved me alot. Thank you for your video. 😀
Nice work!
Can you link to the spring you purchased? Thanks!
Thanks. Just followed your great video to replace the spring. Really appreciate your guidance
Thanks for a really helpful video
Phil
Hi Phil, I'm glad you succeeded !
Where did you see the spring? Im thinking of getting a thicker spring and fixing it myself.
Where did you find the spring?
Hi - where can you buy the replacement spring? thanks!
Great job!
So, i bought 10 of this little springs on eBay for 8Euros.
After following your instructions in the Video, it works great an saved me 2000 Euros.
Thank you very much for your Help!
Best regards from Germany.
Hello ... I have the same issue on my BMW, do you have the link on Ebay where they sell the spring. thanks
Mulțumesc! Tackled this job after the car failed an inspection because of this error. Cost me 4 hours and some bloody knuckles (when I pulled the shifter off) but no more error code! Thanks again.
Nice work!
Glad it helped
This just saved me $2000+. What a great detailed explanation. Only thing to note is the shifter needs to be in N, and I had 2 metal brackets over the duct. Took me about 4 hrs to complete this. Well worth the savings. BMW needs to upgrade this spring. Great video 👍🏼
Nice job! Thanks for the feedback!
hi Jeff, can I ask how the heck you get the 2 screws on the side panel out when the passenger seat is right in the way? I got one in front but the rear one, there is no tool I have that can get in that narrow space to unscrew??
If youre referring to the 2 screws behind that little panel, I have a T-handle torx tool. Its long enough to come at a slight angle and still get enough bite on the screw.
I honestly have not seen a better tutorial video. All the steps clearly shown with a good video angle. Will give it a go. Thanks a lot.
Awesome, thank you!
This video is fantastic. I'm an Automotive Technician and used this as a guide today. Thank you for making this
A very clear and concise video which has saved £1,200 in getting repaired by Main dealer. Thank you.
You are welcome
Thank you for your feedback ! and congrats for a well done job!
Thanks for sharing
Excellent. I followed this video and completed the fix in half a day.
I had to invert the direction of the spring to get enough tension.
What do you mean invert it?
The spring did not have enough tension when replaced the correct way up, so I flipped it which placed the required tension on the housing.
Glad that you succeeded, thanks for feedback!
I couldn’t remove the cable and am stuck, I think it needs to be in neutral cus I don’t see what he sees.
Thank you so much for creating this video. It made the spring replacement a lot simpler and saved a ton of money. Job well done, sir!
Great to hear!

Woohoo.
Great job!
I followed your step and advices that repaired my F48 X1 xdrive 25d.Thank you so much.
Looking forward to more good teaching videos from you.
Great to hear!
Thank you for the video. I followed the entire procedure and replaced the spring by myself in around two hours (first time doing it). I just bought the new spring and some plastic tools to remove the plastic panel from amazon, but the tutorial was really helpful and let me save a lot of money!!
I’m on 2 days and already several screws stripped and had hell aligning shifter to remove and replace. 90% done, put in shifter and won’t budge.
Sehr sehr gutes Video, das reparieren hat perfekt geklappt dank deines Videos ,Super Qualität in Bild und Ton . Vielen lieben Dank und weiter so sendet Stefan aus Deutschland
Really good Video. Followed your instructions and it took me 4 hours. Saved me 1200€. Thanks a lot
Thank you for showing how this is done, now my car is fixed, Thank you!
Great to hear!
Absolutely brilliant video fantastic instructions and especially reusing the old Spring this is genius you saved me a fortune worked like a charm.
Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Thank you very much for your video, i did it in roughly 3 hours this afternoon, taking the time to double check every action. And it works perfectly !
Nice work!
Thanks so much for this I followed your guide and worked a treat. Only issue was I stripped the thread on the screw going into the metal bracket. 👍🏼
Thank you for sharing! May I ask what is the white paste that you put on the plastic components?
Great video, nice to see one online. I found the f48 forum with pictures and instructions on how to do it and they linked your video, it's always nice to "see" it done. I'll be doing this job on my 2016 within the next month.
Hello , I'm glad to hear that thanks !
@@bohumilpinces6377 I'm in the US, I'm I haven't done it yet, been busy but I've set aside time this week to do it. I'll let you know how it goes.
Great information on your video. I watched it once and replaced the spring with confidence. Thank you for posting. David
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video! Repaired my broken spring in about 3.5 hours. Thanks!
Great to hear!
Thanks for the video! I have a 2016 Mini Cooper Clubman (F54). The disassembly of the center console is different, but the gearshift and spring replacement are identical. I chose to buy a new spring from Ebay for $11.
One of the best videos to follow. Great work
I fixed the problem with your fantastic video! it saved me a lot of money. thanks and a lot of respect!
Great to hear!
Very good instructions just done my x1 with this problem very straightforward 👍🏻
Keep up the good work Thanks again 👍🏻👊🏻
Great to hear!
Amazing feeling 😀
Oh, that spring was wayyyyyyy smaller than I expected. 😂
Thank you!
Hello, glad to hear that, thanks for the feedback!
After this video I am 100% that will not do this alone. Yes, all is look nice when You look mr. Ovidiu, but I have no guts to perform this dismantling myself. I'll rather see that message every day.
You need to try its just scews and Time step by step
I plan to do this job this summer on my car. Is it ok to leave the battery connected whilst doing this?
Thanks for the detailed video and explanation, one of the best DIY videos I have found in TH-cam👌🏻👍🏻
This morning I followed the procedure, and problem solved. It lasted 200k kms and 5,5 years
I replaced the spring for a new one bought online (I bought 2 por 4,5€). Hopefully ir lasts at least the same as the original!
As information, it took me 2h 45 mins being really careful and taking my time in each step (especially reassembling the selector assembly with the grease and all)
Where did you get a spare springs? Will be a shame not to have a spare when all disassembled and old one not to reuse..
@@pawelR5895 Hi! I got them in Aliexpress. Looking for "BMW F48 Spring" several results appear.

Hi there… would it be possible for a video on how to remove / replace the arm rest only on BMW X1 2017 and the exact tools you used please?
Really appreciate Mr. Ovidiu for sharing this, your work is awesome and the video is really well explained. I followed the steps and now it works correctly, thanks again!!! Have a good one.
Thanks for saving my life 🎉🎉🎉
Curious asking, is it possible to retrofit LCI gear shifter ?
Well done! I nearly wish I had an automatic now😂
Спасибо тебе огромное!

Thank for your feedback !
Can u share /dm a link where u did get the spring? And regarding clearing the errors, is it essential to clear it, even if problem solved? I am thinking of fixing it myselft and take to local garage.to clear error after job done

Thank you for a great tutorial. I was wondering can i clear error by myself or I will need to go to the garage?
Incredible. Excellent explanation and walkthrough. I’m really not looking forward to this job at all but really glad to have seen your video 💪
Danke!
Having scrutinised numerous complaints from fellow BMW customers who unfortunately share the same faulty gear selector issue. I am firmly of the belief that the replacement part should be evaluated for a recall. This issue affects the following models:
- MINI (F54, F55, F56, F57, F60) with automatic transmission
- BMW X1 (F48) with automatic transmission
- BMW 2 series Active/Gran Tourer (F45/F46) with automatic transmission
Some owners have reported spring failures as early as 17,000 miles, and it's worth noting that this part is non-serviceable.
Hey I'm glad you managed to doit, the errors are still there, but it won't cause a warning light to come on becouse the problem has resolved
@@MOvidiu No, it wasn't. I connected the car with ISTA and no error related to the P position was there. Strange.

Hello , I have answered the questions already:) you can use silicone grease , and ideally is to erase all the errors at the end

Excellent video Thank you very much. Please advise the lubricants you used thanks.
Hello . you can use silicone grease.
Can anyone drop a link for the pin and spring for purchase?
Excellent job, Ovidiu. I'll ordered the spring on the internet and I'll make the replace when it will arrive. Would you be so kind to tell what type of grease should be used inside the gear shifter and where to buy it? Thank you.
Where did you get the spring?
you are an expert.
I have another question for you. My x1 does not have clima, just aircondition. The point is that there is no airflow in the rear seats ,in the middle. just for the legs. you think that it is possible to add this central air flow panel and have rear heating in the middle?
Maybe the best vidéo Ever made 1500€ at the bmw garage !

The first thing when you have a problem with your car, no matter if it is a BMW or something else, is to do a proper diagnosis! So try that first.
Unfortunately after disassemble process, I found out absolutely other shifter part BMW 7950472-01
Can someone please explain if I can do something in this case?
I assembled back without any solution :(
Would appreciate for any info.
My car: BMW 1.5L 2018
Thank you guys.
Before disasambly, did you perform a complete diagnosis? To make sure that the problem is the selector ?
I got the same message, quoted cost of $2500 cnd. So all these message caused by this little spring? Thank you so much!
