One thing I'd add to #2 is that when you look at those books, you can check their Amazon Bestseller Rank and using this, you can tell if that book is actually serving an audience on Amazon. This is important because you can now know if there is an existing market on Amazon for your potential idea. If there isn't, it doesn't mean you can't write the book, but it does mean you can't rely on Amazon to sell it for you.
YES! Thanks Dave for that additional info! Huge tip, I'm pinning this now. Everyone, follow Dave for more awesome author advice, especially related to Kindle stuff. He's THE MAN. 🙌
Great tips, Pat! I'm #InLikeFlynn! As a book publisher and designer, you've offered a lot of tips that will help people get the book written. Time to Fly was beautifully designed, and that's a very important part of the process. My tip/observation: Don't ignore layout/design/setup or wait until the last minute. DIY if you don't know what you're doing takes a ton of time to get good results; and in a rush will make for an ugly book. Find a pro and use the time you save to focus on launching and promotion.
I love how you define success, it's so important to go in understanding that success ISN'T just a certain number, or a certain amount of popularity. I want to write a book in the future, but I'm still figuring out what topic it's going to be. I'm #InLikeFlynn !!
Thanks Zachary! Lots of people (including myself) get totally caught up in the numbers. Keep researching and validating that idea that's the best way to get started!
Thanks Pat, I'm just finishing my first ebook and you actually made me take on this challenge. It took me over 2 years but now I'm almost there... can"t wait to publish it and provide all this helpful information to my audience. #InLikeFlynn
Pat, I love that as you learn new things you try to share those things with your audience. I'm a new listener to the smart passive income podcast and have been absolutely devouring the content. #InLikeFlynn
Pat, you are so awesome! #InLikeFlynn; I am writing my 3rd handbook on style; the topic was a suggestion from readers of 1st & 2nd book. I like tip #2 of validating the content, by asking fans, etc. to weigh in; so so helpful!
This video is super helpful Pat!! Whatever material you bring out, I know it is always top quality. I am writing a book, it is nearing completion and certainly is a huge process; much bigger then I thought when I started. Your tips on how to break the writing process down are awesome. Actually all tips are great. Also, not sure if it is relevant to this particular topic, but another thing I really appreciate about you is that you speak clearly and a speed that is easy to follow. Super for people like myself as English is not my mother tongue. I am grateful for your guidance and inspiration to share your experiences!!! #InLikeFlynn
#InLikeFlynn. I’m ticking every box and taking my time to research and understand exactly what I’m trying to achieve, your videos and emails with links seem to come to me just at the right time! Slowly wins the race sometimes.. thanks Pat, you are my secret coach that keeps me going - Anna 😊
#InLikeFlynn listening to this validates for me the fact that behind a best seller book is an author platform... the process of building an audience through your blog, social media..or what not...to build a community of people around you who like to listen for what you have to say. I'm still learning to build that as author. Thanks, Pat!
I love that your caveat is that a book can still be valuable and help people even if it doesn't hit a bestseller list. Great video, as always, Pat. #InLikeFlynn
Been listening to Pat's content for years. Always inspiring. Pat thanks for this one. I am on the journey to publish my first book so this is super useful! THANK YOU #InLikeFlynn
Hi Pat, I co-authored a book with the FT group 20 years ago, but I've been wanting to get into self-publishing for the last few years, but I never seem to get past the initial flurry of writing before losing steam and getting distracted by daily life. You've given me a new lease of life through your huge value podcast (I'm not a big TH-cam consumer as I don't watch TV either). I'm itching to get my hands on the book and I'm sure it will be really great for the live training I'm launching for small businesses/startups, so will probably recommend it (until one of my own books finally comes to fruition, anyway...just kidding!). Thanks for all the great content, I'm going to start doing a podcast soon, too! Already have the basics from previous dabbles in audio content. Cheers!
#InLikeFlynn - Thanks Pat! I have your book, Will It Fly now, and it is clarifying so much for me. I love the way you lay out your ideas and experiences. That you are sharing real-life work and life experiences is great. I can trust a true "Crash Test Dummy," someone like you who has actually "DONE IT!" So, I am on board with studying and learning from you, Pat, and your blog and recommendations. You have become a main mentor to me. Thanks again, Dave #InLikeFlynn
Great tips Pat. I have started my book and was working like ‘Gangbusters’ on it. My work took me away from my routine for just 2 weeks, but I have not been able to pick it up again like I was moving before. You motivate me to get back in there and start again. #InLikeFlynn
Love the video. I've heard writing a book is one of the most excruciating experiences in terms of discipline and just doing the work. I'm sure it was a great learning experience for you! I can't wait to dig in and read the book! #InLikeFlynn
You must a mind reader too! I just decided that it's time to start my book. My blog readers and FB group, keep hinting in messages that they wish "someone" would just write a Good and useful book in my niche. But, before I do, Will It Fly will be my guide for this new adventure! Thank you..oh and #InLikeFlynn
Pat you're amazing for getting on the Wall Street Best Seller list as a self-published author. And I love your focus on SERVICE and value. Standing out is important to be able to reach those who need your advice. #InLikeFlynn
Thank you for your tips Pat. I have just sent my manuscript to my publisher. This is guided publication but my next two books will be self-published and I will listen to your videos again. My book is entitled 'Shut-down Kids' and I believe it will be a great hit. It is on my experience on teaching kids who are dyslexic.
Resources were stellar, Pat, add this comment to your vault of Thank You's! I'm also glad that you mentioned the need for a developmental editor who's sole task is to critique the book besed on how it is experienced by fresh eyes, not just for grammar. The stuff I hope to publish will likely be quite controversial, so I can see a developmental editor coming in clutch. #InLikeFlynn
Pat, I can definitely see this as a serious time saver for our viewers as well. I've put this technique on the board as a future feature when we get to scaling. Hope you don't mind us jackin' your style (although we both know that's impossible).
Thanks, Pat, great video! I think one of the most helpful pieces of advice was even before your first tip, putting success in context. A book that significantly impacts the lives of people that read it is successful no matter how many copies it sells. I just got my copy of Will It Fly this week and looking forward to reading it! I'm #InLikeFlynn and am starting my first book (with help from this video)
I am aiming to write a book to my children. Listening to you talk about a blog post series reminded me that I could try the format where each chapter is a letter. Thank you. Overall, great video that I bookmarked to watch again later. #InLikeFlynn.
Great info!! I am about to release a book that I am publishing using all the tips I have got from you and other teachers. My book is being released in November. I expect it to sale good, since some of the content has already been picked up by publishers.
Releasing this video was perfect timing for me. My book goes to my Developmental Editor in 5 days. Treating each chapter as its own blog post is a great tactic! Thank you for sharing that, Pat. The toughest part for me is to get back to writing right now and not going down the SPI video backlist rabbit hole. 😜
Great Tips! I'll add that when you do your research, make a list of all the questions your target audience has asked you--especially the questions that you're asked repeatedly. These become great content for your book (or blog or videos, etc.). We loved having you, Pat, as a keynote speaker for our Nonfiction Writers Conference back in 2016. In fact, we added your session to our greatest hits collection! And our attendees were part of your book launch. Keep up the great work!
Hearing that, despite all the walls you came up against, you got through it and finished your book is very inspiring. Especially seeing how well your book has done. Well done and thanks for sharing #InLikeFlynn

Great Dustin! Thanks so much for leaving a comment here, I appreciate it! Best of luck on the book, it's a beast of a process but super rewarding. Keep going!
#InLikeFlynn absolutely fantastic video Pat! I simply did not know of a developmental editor. I've often wondered if there was someone who would critique about just the flow of my copy and nothing else. Great video, great content - thanks a ton.
Congrats! You've been selected to win an autographed copy of Will It Fly? and a shirt! Thank you for watching and commenting on this video! Please send an email to pat@smartpassiveincome.com so we can connect and get them sent to you.
Thank you so much for this video, Pat 😊 Tip No. 4 was one of the most important steps to take to really get even started. The overwhelming feeling of having to write sooooo much can really put someone over the edge. I see so many people starting and then getting lost in the process, because they get overwhelmed and then discouraged. I like the idea of seeing each chapter or story like a blogpost. Doing it this way makes the whole process seem more manageable. #InLikeFlynn
Love it mate. Been binging your podcasts all the way from Sydney Australia for the last little while! You are inspiring me to start my own business very soon #InLikeFlynn
Love the way you break this down. Making small goals and steps is great advice. I need to do some more research and validation on my blog and YT Channel to clarify my audience and their pain points and see how I can help. Congrats on your book. It is so much work and a great achievement. #InLikeFlynn
Hello Pat, I'm really thankful that I got to know your Smart Passive Income Podcast, it really boosted my knowledge on the different types of Online Business. I'm glad that you already started your TH-cam Channel, I'm looking forward for the growth of your channel! Really well done. Keep being an awesome Entrepreneur! I agree with all your tips for writing a Book, this not only helps mapping the ideas out but it also boosts productivity! Super agree with Tip 1. Deep Dive Research is the Key! #InLikeFlynn
#InLikeFlynn. Great tips regarding keeping focused. Also useful for creation information products in general. I really enjoy watching your videos as you break ideas really well and convey concepts simply. Thanks Cheryl
This is something I've been toying with for a while. I know I'm going to have to plan it into my schedule so that it actually gets done. (Little by little). I'm looking forward to reading 'will it fly', because for me, there's nothing better than doing #InLikeFlynn
You always have such amazing topics for your videos! I don't know how you do it, but you always seem to speak about topics that have been on my mind that week. And congartulation on the massive success that your book had! I'm sure it was only the beginning! #InLikeFlynn
#InLikeFlynn. I really appreciated this video Pat. I hadn't thought about the amount of research that should be done to validate an idea and that's so practical before you spend all that time writing. I also liked the idea of treating each chapter as a blog post and creating them one at a time to stop the overwhelm And lastly - I didn't even know about a development editor or thought about that aspect. This video has saved me a bunch of time and I thank you for it.
Thanks for the great tips, Pat! As per your suggestion in our AskPat 2.0 interview, I'm waiting to begin my book writing until next year, once some of my other projects are completed. So I will be referring back to this video as the time approaches.

You always have such amazing topics for your videos! I don't know how you do it, but you always seem to speak about topics that have been on my mind that week. And congartulation on the massive success that your book had! I'm sure it was only the beginning! #InLikeFlynn
Great advice as usual. Particularly the tips on focus - one chapter at a time. This can be applied to other daunting tasks. Thanks.
#InLikeFlynn
