It feels like she's actively trying to show Ody "hey I'm not a threat anymore and I want to help you." Idk maybe it was totally unintentional but I find it kind of sweet.
I like that too, but part of me wished that actually when she took her hair down it’d actually be her taking it down by taking out a hairpin. And the way that it would be seamlessly taken out of the scene again is when she decides to not use it against him and put her hair back up.
But her making the knife disappear with magic wasn’t seen by him, he was looking at the ground and only we saw it, now I do like it better than Circe just hiding it

Love the detail that one soldier was on the roof, and that only two soldiers instead of three made it back. Elpenor just got transformed back from being a pig and the first thing he did was party on the roof
I like the idea that it was only the food that turned you into a pig, and Elpenor went up to the roof with his wine first chance he got without eating anything. Its just funny to me imagining him their during the entire circe saga until he falls off at the end.
Ohhhh! I'd been trying to figure out something for so long! How they started with 600 men, then Posiedon leaves them with only 43 survivors, but then in the Underworld Saga, the fallen men say "558 men who died under your command". Wasn't aware that some doofus went and fell off of a building. That puts my mind at ease.
@@birdlythebirdkid5208 yup, Elpenor is a dude who got so excited about going home that he went ahead and partied on the roof, fell off and broke his neck
The men bear-hugging Eurylochus is both adorable and heartbreaking. They have no idea he wanted to abandon them- only that he went to fetch Odysseus. I also liked how Odysseus smiled at the nymphs- it showed he truly would bring them no harm. Not to mention the Prophet scene?! That was so perfect!
It's so heartbreaking- though I can only imagine how it must feel thinking on how you would've been left behind. Although on the flip side, I also can't imagine feeling helpless that you can't do anything to save them 😭
You gotta love the contrast of Odysseus very human and un-god-like FIDELITY to his wife that makes Circe and later Hera help him. For all the ways Odysseus tries and fails to put himself among gods trough war and trickery, his best qualities are the very human love and loyalty.
I really love this idea, and you're right, it's the thing that helps him the most throughout the story/musical and actually the thing that makes him win the help and compassion of two gods when he most needs it and without which he would have never been able to return home, if they had continued being his enemies and being against him and disagreeing to help him
I love how Circe is sneaking a knife at the beginning; it's such a better interpretation than i had in my head. When I first heard this song, I thought Circe was just "I can't fight you? Ok, I'll just fuck you to learn if you're trustworthy. That totally makes sense." This take, that Circe was using seduction as a test and trap, is so much better. When Odysseus turns her down because he's married, Circe sees that Odysseus is a decent man and not a threat to her nymphs, so she drops the knife and agrees to help him.
CAN WE TALK ABOUT 3:21 WHERE THOSE TWO MEN WHO WERE TURNED BACK FROM PIGS JUST TACKLE THAT OTHER GUY IN A BEAR HUG??? @@emerson4140 I think it is, and if so, that makes the scene so much more adorable. It shows how close Eurylochus was with some (if not all) the crew :)
@@I_will_have_an_emu_army I think it highlights how much of a hypocrite he is, though. He was absolutely willing to sacrifice the men that went with him and leave so that everyone else could survive. Whereas in Scylla, when Odysseus does exactly that, makes a sacrifice of six men so that the other 37 could live, Eurylochus loses his fuckin mind over it.
@@Yaeza31 I see both him AND Odysseus as hypocrites in that moment. Eurylochus because, yes, he was the one who had wanted to leave his recon team behind back on Circe's Island. Odysseus because he was the one who had talked of not leaving comrades behind no matter the risks involved, only to do so when faced with Scylla. Of course, Odysseus had his reasons. It was either giving up six lives of his crew to Scylla, or run the chance of losing the entirety of his crew to Charybdis. Between those two options, who could really fault him for the decision he made? However, the circumstances between Circe's Island and the Lair of Scylla differ. Back on Circe's Island, Eurylochus had no clue he was leading his team into what would be a trap. They had no clue there was a witch inhabiting the land. It was foreign territory. And when it happened, and Eurylochus rushed back to explain the matters, he was outwardly against going back for the men who he had deemed a loss cause. To him, it was a sucide mission. They had already lost so much after their encounter with Poisideon, it's reasonable to not want to lose more. But, Odysseus proves him wrong. He goes and bargains the release of the pig-turned crew members, likely much to Eurylochus' surprise. Maybe it's in that moment that Eurylochus realizes that Odysseus really would do just about anything to ensure the safety of his crew, and the lives of his men. So maybe that's why it comes as such a horrible shock to Eurylochus when he dechipers that Odysseus had been planning to sacrifce six of them. Because the Odysseus he knew never would have never gone through with such a morbid thing. The Odysseus he knew would have found another way. It's also important to note that with Eurylochus, the whole incidnet with his recon team was an accident and no one could have foretold what would happen. And though Eurylochus wanting to leave the men behind may not have been the most moral choice, considering his panic and fearing for the worse, it was justified. But with Odysseus, it was pre-planned. Premeditated murder, if you think about it. Which, I believe, makes the slightest of differences. He knew six lives were going to be lost, and he willfully continued on. However, considering how he had little to no other choices to contend with, his final decision, though gruesome and unfortunate, was also justified. Both of these characters have made or have wanted to make unethical choices. Both have been through their fair share of trauma and tiring events. Both situations sucked, to be honest, but I can understand the perspectives of Eurylochus and Odysseus. If only things could have turned out for the better for all them.
@@Yaeza31 Tbf, Odysseus has them killed. He gives torches to six men to ensure his survival. Six men would have died anyway but he didn't warn his crew and gave six of them torches. It's premeditated murder. And Eurylochus is mad at how Ody has completely changed from before. Like, he didn't even try to fight back against Scylla or anything. He took the coward's way out which is pointed out in the Wisdom Saga if you haven't heard it already
3:17 In love with the physical yet very-much-platonic affection Circe raises Odysseus's chin with here. It's so immediately endearing and sells you on her not really being evil at all - just a kind person jaded after centuries of abuse.
@@JamalPrice-wq2sv well if you think about Odysseus' relationship with Circe was purely sexual, not like he had much of a choice cuz Circe would just end him if she really wanted to. He still very much loves his wife and he did what he had to do with Circe to get him and his men back alive
@@JamalPrice-wq2svand also theyre specifically talking about the platonic gesture in THIS animatic, not to say that Odysseus and Circe has a platonic relationship in the odyssey
I love the way the song parallels "say no to this" from Hamilton because Hamilton is like "you can't expect a man to deny a pretty woman throwing herself at him, especially not when the wife is away for a bit" but Odysseus hasn't seen his wife in YEARS and resists Circe. I can't fully articulate it, but it's great
3:18 so cute when Circe lifts Ulysses chin which is like saying: "Don't kneel down, there's no need anymore" and this is confirmed, because Circe have done the sign of “no” with the head. It’s like she's...softened
I love all the lioness heads in Circe's bedroom, nods to her tendency to keep lions and wolves around her as friends and protection. Also really liked the hair details! The complicated braid/knot technique she usually wears, then her snapping to having it down and flowing when trying to "seduce" Odysseus, back to wearing it up again when she decides to help him instead.
I’m not sure if I’ve commented already, but Gigi you are so so talented and your art is ASTOUNDING!!! This is so gorgeous and I always love your choices and vision! I’m so lucky to get to see your art to my vocals 🥰❤️ thank you!!!
I like the detail of the nymphs immediately being frightened upon seeing Odysseus- really shows smth happened and Circe is just protecting them from it happening again. You can see how much they trust Circe by the way they relaxed when Circe gave the approval that he's okay. AAA small detail but really puts things into perspective
I LOVE seeing Circe gather ingredients and cast spells like a witch! Paired with that color change, it feels drastic (and foreshadows the palette of the Underworld saga).
😂 the conversation Odysseus must have had with his crew would have been crazy. "Hey guys change of plans we're taking a detour to the underworld to get advice on how to get home from a dead guy"
OKAY HEAR ME OUT THE PROPHET LOOKS SO FINE IN THAT SCENE 2:22 ALSO CIRCE IS JUST SO FINE AND SHE'S ALSO SO UNDERSTANDING I'M STARTING TO RETHINK MY AROACE-NESS I SWEAR 😍😍😍😍😍
12 years at war and at sea with only one goal: to get home to his wife and son. He tried to be a good soldier, a good citizen, a good man, but what he always succeeded at in this retelling was being a good father and husband.
There are so many details i love about this!!! Circe circling and stalking Odysseus like a lioness The lion details on the furniture and dagger How Circe undid her hair Odysseus reaching out his hand like Penelope did in The Challenge animatic The sweeping shot like in Puppeteer The scene with the nymphs The transformation from pigs to men And the close-up of Circe's eyes! I'm in love with this! ❤
This is SO GOOD! The magical sparks floating around her, the transition to the underworld section with the color swap, Odysseus' expressions, I could (and probably will) watch this 200 more times. If it was possible for you to outdo yourself at this point, I think it's safe to say you did. Well done :)
I sometimes think about the detail that when Circe comes to crawl up on Odysseus, he moves his legs aside so that she's not in between them. I think that says something.
Odysseus' soft look while he's singing about Penelope 😭 some of my favourite things about Gigi's animatics is how on POINT the expressions and body language are for each of the moments and for the characters, no one does it like Gigi 👌
Circe with her hair down really sells the lion motif she has going on the other aspects of her design, like the markings on her stomac and the cat eyes.
I think so much about kindness vs ruthlessness in epic, I’ll never get over how this song and the verse about kindness is the last thing that happens before ody heads to the underworld and becomes the monster he needs to be to get home. Like. He wouldn’t have gotten to the underworld without kindness and vulnerability, and even leaves Circe with a new perspective on what it means to be kind. But without becoming ruthless, ody never would have made it home. You can’t be kind in war (even tho the war’s over technically this is still a war against the elements/the gods) because all that does is leave yourself open to a counterattack. Yet, Odysseus inspires Circe to be kinder. Circe’s history with men killing her nymphs made her completely cold; Odysseus warmed her back up just enough. She’s not naive enough to let her nymphs be hurt, but open to the idea that some people do have good intentions. It’s almost like Odysseus knew what he had to do subconsciously, and wanted to impart Polite’s message of kindness with someone else before needing to destroy it from himself entirely. Sorry for the wall of text I’ve been thinking abt this so much lol
I can't agree more! I also think it has a lot of parallels with the Calypso arc (needing divine intervention, attempted seduction by a powerful supernatural woman, Hermes providing encouragement) where it shows that while Odysseus needs to be ruthless to get home, he still has his human core left because a ruthless man would've failed or given up (fallen for Circe's honey trap, just accepted living in paradise with Calypso, plus Hera only letting him go for his Fidelity). The only way for him to get home is to show mercy, both in ruthlessness and truth.
In ruthlessness, there's kindness and in kindness there's ruthlessness. It's important to show one or the other when the situation demands it. Greet the world with open arms but be ruthless when they dare choose not to spare. The entire situation with the cyclops could have been avoided if they met before they killed a sheep. After that, he should have shown ruthlessness. I think Epic makes it really clear that there isn't a clear cut line and you should choose depending on the situation
Without the ability to kill mercilessly he never would make it past all those suitors. Without the lessons he learned--"he's aiming for the torches"--they'd have eaten him alive. But at the same time without Athena's sacrifice in the name of the one thing she said she wasn't looking for--friendship--he'd have been stuck with Calypso forever.
having heard the vengeance saga the message seems to be kind of the opposite, in that ruthlessness begets only more ruthlessness. Poseidon refuses to show mercy and in the end it comes back to bite him. It doesnt end up being mercy upon himself. It was the same in the case of mutiny. Odysseus showed the same ruthlessness in sacrificing his men, the epitomy of ruthlessness not being mercy upon ourselves and he ended up entirely losing the trust of his crew. Plus in this actual odyssey, Odysseus killing the infant is why he is being punished by being unable to return home in the first place. Like all the Greeks, he was punished for his crimes in the taking of troy Its about the cyclical nature of violence. Poseidon killed Odysseus crew and now he gets tortured. Odysseus sacrificed his men so now he gets betrayed etc etc. This is the sense in which the message is the opposite. You NEED to show kindness, because if you show only ruthlessness that's the only thing youll get back. That's why in six hundred strike Poseidon doesn't allow Odysseus to finish the line about ruthlessness being mercy, its an admition that its not. That's why Odysseus says LOOK WHAT YOUVE TURNED US INTO, LOOK AT WHAT WEVE BECOME. Its basically commentary on Poseidon's ideology about ruthlessness. What has it wrought? One murderous psychopath torturing another? Did Poseidon's actions restore his sons sight? Did they not end up with him cowering with a trident stuck in him? Did Odysseus actions save his men? Keep their trust? End up with him having a clean conscience? In a very real way the circe saga showcase what happens when things dont work that way. Odysseus could have marshalled his troops and razed Circe's palace, he could have killed her. Circe could have killed or refused to tturn Odysseus men back. She could have killed him in a moment of weakness. After all going by your logic this is no less war if battling the elements is war. But Odysseus simply asks and refuses to kill Circe and she in turn him, and the interaction ends with no one harmed. This is what mercy brings, everyone coming out ok. Ruthlessness here would have resulted in ppl dying for no reason and needless enmity, like every other time Tldr : The whole saga is about how ruthlessness fundamentally doesn't work, and every time someone deploys violence it comes back to bite them, and the only time when bad things doesn't happen, like in the Circe saga, its when ppl are kind and merciful. The saga itself starts with a monstrous act in killing the infant which essentially curses Odysseus to be punished (though both here and in the Odyssey the sins of odysseus are many and his pride is his most notable bugbear)
2:23 i really like how you make Tiresias look a little bit androginous instead of making him look like an old man like many other animatice i've seen. 1:39 Okay but this moment is actually so good because back then, kneeling down like this left you completely vulnerable to attack, so Odysseus is literally begging her to grant him mercy and not kill him. 3:02 AWW the poor scaredy pig
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE I LOVEE how this one shows exactly how much power Circe actually has, most show a more subtle mind-game, but this one shows her power physically, with her dominating the entire interaction, being taller, shoving Odysseus around, and causing him mental distress all wrapped in a seductive package before going in for the kill. She was literally trying to court him with death, using herself as bait and I love that. I also love how it shows that the only thing that stays her hand and her blade is his loyalty and love for Penelope. She almost seems annoyed that she can’t kill him now, because she’s been in the same situation before, and expected Odysseus to choose the other woman just like Glaucus, but he remains loyal instead. Killing him would be like killing the part of herself that still loves and longs for what Odysseus and Penelope have, so she couldn’t even if she is cynical to a happy ending. AND amazing usage of film techniques and camera angles, like the ARC SHOT (my fave) the DOLLY SHOTS the TILTING, the TRACKING, the PANNING THE LOW ANGLE POV SHOT OF CIRCE THEN PENELOPE?!!? 10/10 amazing as always, Gigi!
I absolute ADORE how you animate the tone shift of the song when Circe starts talking about the underworld. It’s just all so good! Also the design of the profit and the music change shown with the colors is *chef’s kiss* (even if the prophet design was changed in future stuff)

Hey so I’m actually crying thanks
Also something awful to note, the bigger one, the guy with one eye, gets got by Scylla. He's the last one.

I like this idea, it's wholesome amongst the man becoming monster theme ( which I am so obsessed with too 😂)
I really love this idea, and you're right, it's the thing that helps him the most throughout the story/musical and actually the thing that makes him win the help and compassion of two gods when he most needs it and without which he would have never been able to return home, if they had continued being his enemies and being against him and disagreeing to help him

That's actually the canon take 😅 But I had a similar interpretation as you when I first listened to the song

Isn’t the other guy Eurylochus?

I LOVE seeing Circe gather ingredients and cast spells like a witch! Paired with that color change, it feels drastic (and foreshadows the palette of the Underworld saga).

This is my favorite interpretation of that whole situation!
Like all the Greeks, he was punished for his crimes in the taking of troy
Its about the cyclical nature of violence.
Ruthlessness here would have resulted in ppl dying for no reason and needless enmity, like every other time
Tldr : The whole saga is about how ruthlessness fundamentally doesn't work, and every time someone deploys violence it comes back to bite them, and the only time when bad things doesn't happen, like in the Circe saga, its when ppl are kind and merciful.
It reminds me of how in the myths Tiresias was tranformed into a woman and lived like that for a while before being turned back into a man.

2:10 AUGH???? AWESOME???
I love Circe’s design. I love all the flowers in her hair and how she uses her magic to put it up and let it down
I love how in your Circe animatics they are clearly pulling from the book Circe and not just the The Odyssey
Odysseus be collapsing in the chair like he's at therapy.
I absolute ADORE how you animate the tone shift of the song when Circe starts talking about the underworld. It’s just all so good!
Also the design of the profit and the music change shown with the colors is *chef’s kiss* (even if the prophet design was changed in future stuff)
Love that the Prophets Design has so many Eyes while he himself is Blind.
I love that his sword at the start isn’t a full battle sword showing that he is mainly an archer and so wouldn’t have a full large blade
3:21 that group hug🥲
Ody: _12 LoNg YeArs_
Circe: …That’s rough, buddy.
Seriously, this was great!
Lowkey love the way Circe magically does her hair. The lighting in this part is lovely, too!
I just realized you can see Elpenor on the roof near the end 😂
The little bow I can’tttt 🥰
*Slams fist into the ground* IT SHOULDVE BEEN ME, NOT HIM
to be stabbed?
Me too
@@remnants9974no, to be seduced by Circe
IT'S NOT FAAIR
@@remnants9974if that’s what it takes…
the dagger with the lion's head is a very nice touch
Everybody in the live chat is going crazy for Circe and I love it LMFAOO
The parallel to Penelope through a reflection of sorts at 1:23 , Odysseus is so close and yet so far from her and yet she is everything to him. He longs for her still and I love it. Actual Queen 💜
The amount of improvement in a year is amazing! Circe looks GORGEOUS!
I'm so happy that they made Circe actually a friend.
I originally heard something else and frankly- I really liked Circe and thought "omg besties!"
SO! I'm happy for that :D
THAT WAS SO GOOD! I love the way that Ody mentally holds hands with Penelope, they are such a couple (also tree bed). 1:25 you can _see_ the longing for his wife in his eyes. 1:30 Ody collapsing on the couch/bed while Circe just scoots away. AND CIRCE UNTYING HER HAIR GOES SO HARD! Also 2:15 THAT PUFF OF SMOKE ON THE BEAT AAAAA. Beautiful!
Love everything about this!
I also noticed that the colour pallet changes to that of Monster when she talks about the Underworld, gigi you genius.
i love how you represented circes magic and how you made her seems so powerful in simple movements and then showing the trust the ladies have in her and her decisions and how the men were so happy to be reunited and not pigs. it all was amazing i loved it
Circe legit a couch therapist for a moment there lol. Beautiful, stunning work Gigi!!
