    This album is a masterpiece. It yielded so many great hits: "Miss You Much," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Alright," "Escapade," "Black Cat," "Come Back to Me." Plus, it has a social commentary message binding it together. It's impossible to not feel good, smile and move when you listen to it.

    Paula Abdul wasn’t Janet’s only choreographer, her main choreographer as time went on was Tina Landon. Anthony “Bam Bam” Thomas was who choreographed this dance. I grew up in the 90s and yes I used to study her dances and tried to copy them cause I wanted to dance like her. I had all her music video on a VCR tape lol

    This whole album was a masterpiece. One of the most iconic albums to come out of 80's. Lots of hits to check out. My favorites are "Miss You Much," "Black Cat" and "Love Will Never Do." Though, "Escapade," "Come Back to Me," "Alright," and "State of the World" also were great hits from that album. Janet has a huge discography of amazing songs. Of the 80's female artists, only Madonna and Whitney can match her.

    There was probably no bigger solo female artist in the early 90s than Janet. Her breakout hit (from 1986) was "What Have You Done For Me Lately". The album that came from, "Control", sold MILLIONS of copies. "Nasty", "When I Think of You", "Control", "Let's Wait Awhile", and "The Pleasure Principle" (which you did a few months ago) were also on that album. Paula Abdul, a great friend of Janet's also helped choreograph some of her dance moves (and even appeared in the video for "Nasty"). She didn't slow down at all with "Rhythm Nation" - check out "Miss You Much", "Escapade", "Alright", "Come Back to Me", "Black Cat", and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)". All are bangers. That's like a career's worth of Top 10 hits off just TWO ALBUMS!

    Janet Jackson's 1989 album "Rhythm Nation 1814" is nearly perfect. There isn't a bad song on the entire album. If I'm not mistaken, it still holds the record for most number one singles off one album. This was the album that helped Janet emerge from behind Michael's shadow, and she made a name for herself. In 1990 I saw Janet in concert for her Rythmn Nation tour. It remains to this day, the best show I've ever seen. Some criticized her lip syncing some of the songs, but I'm sorry- do you see that dancing?!?!? You can't keep that level up for 2 hours and get the breath necessary for good singing. She did sing the slow songs live and she sounded great.

  • @allieren
    @allieren 2 ปีที่แล้ว +125

    I personally think you started with a banger in “The Pleasure Principle,” but the whole Rhythm Nation 1814 album is fire, and extremely iconic. I am shocked it was never nominated for Album of the Year or Record of the Year or any of the big Grammys. It overwhelmingly addresses themes of social injustice and when it came out in 1990 or 91 (I forget exactly but I was in junior high), it was criticized for being too radical, or what we’d call today “woke.” Even though social justice was a common theme right around that time period with the AIDS epidemic, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the dissolution of the Soviet Union-if you remember “Winds of Change” by The Scorpions-and so many more things I can’t even remember, lot of people weren’t ready. Older Gen X was just starting to lean into and influence change, but Boomers and the Silent Generation were still in charge.

    • @muc405
      @muc405 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You know, MJ was a Boomer born in 1958 and Janet is what you call "older" Gen X. I don't think you can paint either generation with such a broad brush as if being a Boomer or Gen X is part of some monolithic group that thinks the same, acts the same, or doesn't understand social justice....back then OR now. That stereotype is beyond tiresome.

    • @docmoondog
      @docmoondog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There was some major double standards at work though. White males were applauded for their "woke" leanings at the same time. This was the era that saw REM addressing social issues. Bono, Midnight Oil, Bruce Springsteen, even Janet's own brother were making music that championed environmentalism, animal rights, anti-war, anti-consumerism. Yet a black female acting self-empowered and taking a stand was too much? Generation X, or at least those of us smart enough to recognize hypocrisy, saw how ridiculous it all was.

    • @SymphonicEllen
      @SymphonicEllen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@muc405 social justice then involved a lot of people that actually wanted to help. Today's social justice has a lot of bad ideology. For one, I highly doubt Janet thinks she's oppressed. I loved both her and Paula in the 90's and the message was work hard and you can achieve anything you want. Now it's "how dare you require I work hard or try to educate myself. "

    Janet Jackson is seriously the equivalent of the female version of Michael Jackson. But I actually feel that in some ways she is an even better dancer that Michael, because although he had a very unique one of a kind way of dance style... his were very much the same throughout his career. His signature moves were the same moves in most of his videos and performances. Whereas Janet had a very different unique style from one video or performance to the next...always evolving and changing. I went to her concerts several times including her best which was the Rhythm Nation concert and it was incredible. You guys should do BLACK CAT and IF next if you would like to see another side of her musical style that I know you will like.

      I disagree. Michael’s dance style evolved over time and he introduced moves to audiences who had never seen the robot, or moonwalking. Frankly, I thought Janet copied a lot of Michael’s moves but it could just be that they used the same choreographers.

In fact, during Escapade, which you need to do a review on - he was matching her step for step, and she pointed directly at him and clapped. It was surreal. Wonderful show, true talent, fantastic night I will NEVER forget.
