Volkswagen Golf VR6: The 90’s Most Underrated Hot Hatch

  • Car manufacturers and consumers alike have long enjoyed a passionate and, at times, obsessive love affair with the hot hatch. It’s a fascination that started in earnest during the 1970s and is still red hot five decades later (yes, yes, arguably the “first” hot hatches appeared long before 1970 but it’s widely agreed that their popularity went bananas with the arrival of Mk I Volkswagen Golf GTI in 1975).
    BMW, Mercedes, Ford, Abarth, Renault, Honda, Peugeot, Toyota, VW and Hyundai to name but a few are all still producing fast, top of the range hatchbacks in 2019. Their popularity is still intensely strong with drivers because they combine so many desirable features and attributes all into one bundle of affordable joy and usefulness. And manufacturers love them because, well, they sell.

    I agree with your estimation, but you would have convinced your audience better if you’d captured how glorious the engine sounds, the single element that placed it head and shoulders above anything else from the era.

    There was nothing in the 90s that sounded as amazing as a vr6. May have not Been the fastest hot hatch but the refinement and how exclusive it was being a 2.8 was just unbelievable for that era

    I was a VW salesman in 1995 and I fell in love with the 95 VW GTI VR6 sitting in our showroom and bought it!
    The VW manufacturer reps would come into our dealership and I'd talk with them about the GTI VR6. They told me that there was only 1500 GTI VR6's made and none of them had automatic transmissions.
    As a musician who played the drum kit every weekend, my GTI VR6 perfectly carried me and my drum kit to every gig.
    The most beautiful thing about the GTI VR6 was the perfectly tuned sound of the factory settings on the whole drive train package as this machine cruised down the road. And what I mean by that is this, the sound of the engine and stock exhaust was perfectly "in tune" with the guitar tuning of every song played on the radio. I don't know if Volkswagen design this sound tuning of the drivetrain on purpose or what. But this car was beautiful and in harmony with whoever drove it especially so with a musician who drove it!
    I sure do miss that car!

    I had a German spec 1992 VR6, and it looked worlds better than that car. Much different front end from the factory with a lower air dam in the front, sat about an inch lower on factory springs, contrasting black trim rather than body color with Red VR6 logos, 5 spoke wheels and much wider tires, three spoke non-airbag steering wheel to name a few things. It was a lovely car, and the engine noise was the star of the show. It just sounded so good!

    For the bulk of the last decade the daily has been a 98 VR6, and even dirty and ragged out (you can tell it's loved), there's been countless people at gas/petrol stations saying they regret getting rid of theirs.

It's also about how a car feels. And a mk3 makes you feel like youre home. Also the sound of the vr6...it's that what gets most of the people every single time. But he failed to present that. sadly.

    Important MKIII VR6 driver question-
    Within the next week I've gotta get a new muffler. It's currently running 262 cams, with stainless 3.5 inch exhaust (planned for future turbo). Anybody have insight? It used to have magnaflow which was loud enough that friends always heard it coming and still "quiet" "ish."

    the MK3 just looks ungainly to me. And the engine was wasted in it. However, there many Mk2s with a VR in that are very nice and of course theres the glorious and MASSIVELY underrated Corrado. Made in so few numbers people don’t recognise them, overshadowed by the scirocco which got all the new toys, the Corrado is awesome.

      Corrado vr6 handle brilliantly I thought, just could never fall in with a good one any time I changed car, ended up with a selection of vr6 golfs. Think the engine must sit that bit farther back or something because they don't push the nose as much as the golf. Loved the dash in them too, such cool cars, I'd love one!😎

      They are a combination of a golf suspension on a Jetta frame I think. Awesome handling for an FWD car, only time I felt it ever understeer was in a corner over a icy manhole cover - literally hopped sideways a half meter!

    Sorry but Fiat Uno Turbo 1.4 was the best hot hatch of the 90s, I beat Vtecs by many lampposts , Opel 16v, BMW 325i E36,E30, 328i, VR6 was a joke , Gti16v was much slower and a Calibra Turbo, it was standard then I added a bigger turbo and Injectors and ate a 930 turbo and a M3 E36 for supper

    • @ciartdsfa4899
      @ciartdsfa4899 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The vr6 those cars beat must have needed a coil pack hahaha! I bought my first vr6 in June 2000 and haven't owned anything else but vr6s since. The only E36 passing a vr6 is an m3, trust me others will agree, no E30 either, I found it had no bother staying with any classic Impreza WRX UK spec as my friend Phil had several, only mods to any of my vr6s were suspension, cat back supersprint,(mongoose on current one) 4bar fpr and cda bmc filter. Suspension helps them but they will always be heavyish out front, the corrado vr6 handles better but put the right stuff in the golf and it does handle. That engine noise tho 20yrs on still gives me that same pleasure so when the rust claims this one I'll probs buy another! Great daily driver for such an old car now, Uno turbos flew with a wee bit of tinkering back in the day, knew few guys with them and they giant slayed on the regular haha!

      ciar tdsfa I had a Jetta VR6 , I k ow what you mean by the sound , mine had a kn cone filter and my friends just wanted a ride in it lots just to hear that sound when I opened the taps . I raced my friend in his M3 E36 and whilst I was changing to 3rd , he was 10 cars ahead of me lol .A few years later I had a 328i E36 for a while and that was definately faster 3rd gear it pulled hard, I respect you for still owning one, in the uk with tax and mot laws it’s tough to own a old car

    • @ciartdsfa4899
      @ciartdsfa4899 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kenrossaukrsa E36 328i are lovely cars too but standing starts rolling starts etc the vr6 was just quicker and that was with at least four other 328s friends owned, one friend in particular tortured me to go out with whatever he arrived at my door in and he bought all sorts so there's been extensive research carried out haha Fast Phil RIP😎 he's basically why I put this channel up to host videos he was in so when his kid grows up he can see what antics his dad got up to in the cars, if your Jetta is 24v V6 like the golf and Bora 4motions we get in UK the 12v vr6 golf will be a tiny bit quicker too, nothing much but just the car in front, the weight of the 4x4 is the difference. Tax is £315 I think for my vr6 unless it's went up haha 🤣
