Sidearm pitches expand the zone hard. Sidearm pitchers with high velocity? Hell yeah. Balling every game. A Fastball at the perfect angle going up can get grounders and alot of Ks
@@deemavoIt’s because sidearm pitching is used to throw batters off who have been seeing overhand pitches all game. Sidearm pitches are less effective if you see them over multiple plate appearances in a single game, because of their lower velocity. A starter sidearm pitcher has to be really really good with velocity, movement, and location, while a late reliever sidearm pitcher just has to rely on the strange movement inherent in sidearm pitching to get outs.
When you throw a ball overhand, you put a natural backspin on the ball. This tends to make the ball rise. But gravity makes the ball sink, so a normal overhand fastball tends to be a flat pitch because gravity and the spin counteract each other. If you throw directly underhand, gravity and the spin work together to make the ball sink, or at least, HUMP. This is why submariners tend to get much more movement on the ball than over handers. When you throw a curveball, it can actually break UP. A slider slides more, is easier to throw, and tends to shoot sideways...slightly rising if you throw it hard, sinking if you throw it slow. Bill James pointed out that submariners have better records than over handers all through baseball history. There is a prejudice against them, as you hear from John Smoltz in this video, so they have to be VERY good before they are given a chance. Submariners are often guys who couldn't make it overhand, so turned to subamrining as a last chance....kind of shows you don't need as much natural talent to be effective. When Pedro Martinez hurt his arm before the post season, he had to pitch a big game against the Yankees. He said threw "98% changeups" from downstairs against the best hitting team in the league, and threw a two hit complete game shutout. When Kent Tekulve quit, he head the record for the most games played of any pitcher in MLB history, so Smoltz's comment about longevity is not valid. Ted Abernathy and Carl Mays had long careers, and Quiz won the Rollaids Relief Award something like seven years in a row...pitchin a lot more innings than pitchers do now.
@EDWIN PRADO I see guys like Neshek, Cishek and O'Day, and they all have roughly the same windup. I want to see a lefty that pitches like that. They toss pitches like a frisbee.
It's honestly horrible for your arm to throw like that speaking as a lefty. I don't know how so many pitchers today can continuously throw like this without having some serious adverse effects on their muscles, ligaments and joints.
The really low release looks like it would gave a similar effect on the average batter as an offered pitch. You're not used to tracking pitches from down there and it opens who new angles on the box. Nasty.
This is why a lot of guys love to pitch that way. Every kids and adult say that's soo cool. I wish I could pitch that way when I was young. When you turn 40-90 years old. you know you could throw that. But it doesn't have enough speed. The throw feels like rolling a wheel.
I remember pitching and striking out all kids in little league, I realize as an adult, the coach didn't want me to pitch bc I was better than his son and he was the main pitcher.🤣 coaches excuse was imma blow my arm in the future, but I didn't expect to go pro and now his son isn't even pro 😂
It's a matter of degree. How far you come from underneath is what we're talking about. Low sidearm and submarine are very similar. The most blatant submariners, like Quiz, bend their bodies sideways so they are practically dragging their knuckles on the ground. Tekulve stood up straight more, but still cam from way downstairs.
My Middle school didn't have a baseball team so we would play in the gym for fun, and I always pitched side arm, I pitched it kinda fast and hella accurate
or Kim Byunghyun? Those are three of the most prominent side arm/submarine arms I can think of. There was another guy who pitched for the Chiba Lotte Marines a few years back named Shunsuke Watanabe who was pretty big in Japan too. Usually this channel is on top of this stuff and will come out with a part two.
Very cool. In fact awesome---thanks for putting this together---One of my grandson pitches in HS. I was not sure he could be great and now I see he can be as a side arm thrower.
So as a batter, how the hell are you susposed to read a sidearm pitcher's delivery ?? Usually you can pick up delivery of a fastball or a change up/slider or even a curve but sidearmers throw all that 'aside'. (Pun intended!!LOL)
This is the third sidearm pitcher compilation video i've watched that had Chad Bradford as the thumbnail photo that didn't have a single pitch of his in the video.
I think it's highly underused considering how players are constantly looking at the pitcher for releases that give away pitches ect. Pitchers today have to constantly change how they deliver just so batters aren't picking up their pitches.
Way different styles for sure, but almost identical mechanically. Those submariners just dip their throwing shoulder toward the ground instead of keeping their shoulders level. This is what allows them to generate that upwards spin.
You don't have to throw hard to get guys out. Former Giants general manager Brian Sabean said 90mph is plenty of fastball to get guys out. This video proves it.
Para que alguien que no sabe de béisbol, que ventaja y desventaja tiene pichar así? Soy de Mochis y recuerdo que en la mlp me tocó ver algunos pitchers que pichaban así
Im a sidearm pitcher and I'm only 14... to every young and old pitcher don't try it it brokes ur arm I'm under some cream and all these stuffs cus' it's bad for ur arm

These guys are so much more interesting to watch than the majority of pitchers.
And if a majority of the pitchers through side arm, then throwing overhand would be interesting.
i have so much pat neshek signed stuff from him on the twins, legit favorite pitcher in all of baseball
Sidearm pitches expand the zone hard. Sidearm pitchers with high velocity? Hell yeah. Balling every game. A Fastball at the perfect angle going up can get grounders and alot of Ks
It’s such a smoother, more fluid motion than overhand. I have to believe it’s better for your arm.
I think if that were true, you'd see side-armers pitching as starters. There's gotta be reason they're all late relievers.

No Byung-Hyun Kim?
Huh?
김병현 기억하는 외국인도 있네요. 반갑다.
You remember frisbee~!
he is mlb korean legend~
@@朝鲜是中国的 A Short-term Legend :(
exactly what I was wondering
Darren O’Day, Chad Bradford, Kent Tekulve, Terry Leach, BK Kim, Mike Myers, Steve Reed, Jeff Innis.
Carl Mays, Ewell Blackwell, Pedro Martinez and David Cone! sometimes), Ted Abernathy

I ain't reading all that
@@Wyattl. Just read one third of it, and you will be enlightened beyond your wildest dreams......
After reading this I tried out side arm pitching and it's much more accurate and comfortable. I've become a sidearm pitcher now 😂
LOL. Send me a free pass when you get called up to the Yankees! @@Wyattl.
Imagine how many times he could skip a rock
We need some more lefty sidearm pitchers.

Tim Hill on the royals is the only known Lefty submarine pitcher
@Miles Campbell: Ah, thank you. That was what I was looking for. "Submarine pitcher"
It's honestly horrible for your arm to throw like that speaking as a lefty. I don't know how so many pitchers today can continuously throw like this without having some serious adverse effects on their muscles, ligaments and joints.
I'm a lefty too. (but don't play baseball) I think it's horrible for all. Do righties really have an advantage that allows them to be sidearmers?
The really low release looks like it would gave a similar effect on the average batter as an offered pitch. You're not used to tracking pitches from down there and it opens who new angles on the box. Nasty.
I was a sick backyard pitcher growing up. I was throwing nasty change ups, sliders, sinkers, and crazy breaking balls.
Aren't sliders and change ups breaking balls?
A slider is, not changeup tho
..I, too, was a side-arm pitch'r (though only as a little leaguer)..man, I miss those days..

Walter Johnson won 400 games as a sidearmer.

We need Kent Tekulve in here
Hell yeah.....This is a travesty

Great video
I’m sure there a lot of side arm pitchers to mention, would of been nice to see some Randy Johnson or Sergio Romo

Uh.. Randy Johnson, Chris Sale..? Probably the two best side arm pitchers ever..
Greysen Gagné Randy Johnson was more of a low three quarter arm angle guy, its slighty higher than sidearm.
Don't forget tekulve
Greysen Gagné Walter Johnson
Madison Bumgarner
Killed my shoulder when I was in my teens pitching sidearm 😉
I notice there were no lefties in that clip, is the something in that delivery style that’s not conducive comingin from the left?
That Japanese (I think) pitcher at 1:30 is incredible. Anyone know who the hell that is?
He is Korean baseball player. Korean name 박종훈, English name JongHun Park. He is best of best submarine pitcher in Korea. His ball is inredible right!
Sidearms, it is hard to see if t is a ball or a strike, because it basically always curves up, or away from the strike zone.
No it doesn’t though
How is Chad Bradford not in this video?
Some of these are not even side armed they are submarine pitchers which is completely different. 🤣

Growing up in Pittsburgh in the 70's, every kid on the block was tryin' to perfect Kent Tekulve's sidearm.
Ken Tekulve, where is him?
Actually you can also throw a rise ball like softball players if you throw sidearm.
That really screws up batters lol
They throw a baseball like I throw a rock when I'm skipping them at the pond
Sidearm pitchers save their elbows and shoulders
