The 700 Foot Tall Coaster That Never Came To Be: The Stratosphere's Fish Hook Coaster

- In 2000, Arrow Dynamics and The Stratosphere in Las Vegas had a game plan for a 700 foot, 122 MPH coaster that dove down the side of the tower. This project never came to be. What happened to the proposed Fish Hook coaster?

A lot of people are saying that Tower of Terror was the 1st 100mph coaster, and even though its official opening date was before Superman's, Superman had a passholder preview in 1996 so I consider it the first coaster to hit 100mph. Doesn't matter though, the point was that Intamin took the record and they built both coasters.
I was at the pass holder preview. They gave specific times on a certain day out of the weeklong preview. It's the only time that I can recall, that they ever "raced" the cars up the tower!
Good times.
So...... WCR opens in 2019?
Why would you live in Vegas if your so concerned about noise and large structures????
i mean, the neighborhood was there before the giant buildings. and the large buildings arent as close as stratosphere.
@@content6032 The entire reason the city went from a no-name watering hole on the way to California to a destination was because of the large, noisy attractions. Opposing expansion there is like opposing expansion in Orlando.
The neighborhood dated back to the 50s so a lot of that stuff came in way after families had their roots there
And why would some people move next to a amusement park without doing research that there was a amusement park there, and complain about noise? Because some people are hypocrites.
@@AirtimeThrills The population of Las Vegas in 1950 was 24,000, less then 4% of what it is today. Even assuming the extremely unlikely chances that a noteworthy number of people in that specific borough where even from it (or even Las Vegas at all give how most of its residence aren't locals) it's one of those changes that, like it or not, comes with the territory when living in a resort city.

That's too bad it didn't pan out. Would've been really cool. I agree with that local woman.. It's Vegas. What's supposed to be an "adult playground". Can't think of a better way to do that than a 700ft coaster.
What’s really ridiculous is I find a really hard time believing that somehow they have a quiet neighborhood being in the heart of vegas almost, and being surrounded by other things that also make noise. Lol.
I have rode all three rides atop “the strat” and let me tell you, as someone that has rode thousands, and considers myself a true thrill seeker queen, the one that goes in circles out over the top of the building literally had me holding on for dear life, and could barely open my eyes. Definitely wasn’t expecting that sort of reaction out of me...but once you get up there you really realize just how high up it is.
so i am guessing you think that the 700Ft tall ride would have been an amazing experience :)
You are 1 brave girl as you would not get me on it. Lol
@@thewewguy8t88 i jumped off the ledge of it 😎
Getting chills thinking about this one
No one:
Not a single soul:
Random tower: let’s go 700 feet, it’s going to be the worlds tallest
Cedar point: Are you challenging me?
But Cp doesn't have the world's tallest.
@@spider0804 Only because Six Flags wanted to outdo them.
@@maximaldinotrap The point is they do not respond to every record they broke and someone rebreaks, super doubt they would respond to a 700 foot tall coaster too.

I had no idea that caused the downfall of arrow, not just X2
X drained their budget but this didn't help either since they worked on it and never got that big payday
This would have been a decent lifeline for arrow however I doubt it would have saved the company for long with just how many problems this could have experienced.
@@bananagins7309 It might have given them the life long enough to have allow Alan S to move up to the companies leadership and we could have seen a revitalization like we have seen with Vekoma in the last few years.

Hmmmm.... I think I just solved magic mountain’s giga problem... just build a scaled down version on the observation tower... 🤔😂
Vertical Elements I saw a video where a guy pitched the idea of reworking the Sky Tower into a clone of Superman, creating a Batman V Superman ride.
Dosware Pictures was it the awesomist
Dosware Pictures ooooooo. That’s gooooood. That would be so perfect for going with superman. Problem is that samurai summit would be mixed in with a mini dc universe. Haha
S0ul yep.
That was a fascinating piece of rollercoaster history that I had never hear about. Once again you hit it out of the park with another amazing video
yes same here. granted i do think it was quite gimicky but still it looks like it could have been something.
So not only have I learned about this coaster, I also learned that a "scream tunnel" is a thing. I always figured those tunnels were for kicks!
And now the largest coaster in Vegas is a pile of TOGO... sad
Great video!! I love the Stratosphere those people are CRAZY! No doubt had the neighborhood not fought back they would have built this thing. Riding Insanity was a mind blowing experience- the fish hook would have exceeded that for sure! I think we will see a 500 footer soon!
I went to Vegas a couple of times and I think it would be insane if the 700ft coaster happened. I did go to Stratosphere and I did all their attractions which are also for the extreme junkies like me.
Insanity is so scary!
X-scream was really disconcerting. I was sitting in the front, so I could see my feet pass over the end of the track, and found myself holding my breath on each tilt until the car stopped and the track tilted back up. Big shot was kind of disappointing though. The scariest part is the shot up, as the drops are all short and controlled. Insanity was not operating the day I went, but I would like to try it someday.
I saw a DVD back in high school from like 2003 called Extreme Roller Coasters which features Alan Schilke talking about the recent opening and background of building X, and later in the program, an ACE member mentions this plan from Arrow which I had never heard about until then. So this was exciting to watch as I had never heard any background about this or where it would've ended up being built at.
If this was approved and built today, you KNOW some enthusiasts would complain that there’s no airtime or inversions and it’s just a 700 foot drop and a 415 foot “Scorpions Tale. Yet, they’ll still praise Dragster which is just a glorified top hat 😂😂
honestly its funny kingda and dragster are rides its my dream to ride one day but this idk there is something about this ride that feels way too gimicky. like honestly i wont lie but i want to go on the hulk badly its just other then the hulk i have no other reason to vist universeral studios.(maybe 1 or 2 other rides)
I have to say this is probably one of your most informative videos to date. That isn't to say your other videos were bad. But this one was really well researched and I learned a lot! I once heard of this coaster but I never knew the details of it. Or that Arrow was the company involved. Or that Arrow was in the midst of its X debacle at Magic Mountain when they had planned this. Definitely one of your best videos. As much as I love your list videos, I look forward to even more videos like this one!
i still want a 700ft ride at stratosphere. Maybe a 'Zumanjaro Drop Of Doom' style ride but 700ft tall. Worlds tallest flat ride BOOM
I get chills just thinking about it
That would be terrifying. The negative Gs would be ridiculous. Just another drop tower I won’t ride.
Airtime:
*hold my beer*
Just do the sky jump
The Strat should revisit this idea. The hotel is in a weird and a little sketchy spot to begin with. It's not really the strip and it's not really downtown. They could really use a boost from a major attraction like this.
Thanks for taking the time to create these videos I LOVE them. I didkt know about this coaster wtf
I've watched a couple videos about this before and knew all the basics facts, but I knew you would put so much extra information which in is why you're my favourite youtuber. Another great video
Very informative!
You are an encyclopedia of roller coaster knowledge.....bravo.
It would not surprise me if S&S Worldwide would bring this concept to life in the next 5 years.
This is gonna be good. Been waiting since you announced it lol
I totally forgot about this. I remember reading about when I was a kid and being floored that something like that could exist. What a trip down memory lane!
That's a large space they'd have to clear out for it living in Vegas... flipside that area to this day is "Hood" than a mf
I enjoyed this very much. Would’ve been real cool. That old school synth music in the background is dope.
Outstanding video! Its good to see that this piece of coaster history hasn't been completely forgotten. The young enthusiasts of today have no idea how much this blew our minds back then. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! And thanks so much for the rendering! Its the only one I know of on TH-cam.
@@AirtimeThrills I am all about lost coaster history, so my channel tries to keep that history available for all to enjoy. Please feel free to use any of my vids for future projects!
I've been on the Big Shot ontop and it awesome 10/10 for that view! This addition would have been awesome af! Maybe in the future?
I love these videos! Hope to see more of these coaster talks!
I lived in Las Vegas prior to during and after this, I remember it well and this video certainly gave me the nostalgia bug for sure!!! I lived in that area as well. The funny thing is when I had my house off Sahara the cost was extremely low given the proximity to the strip... an also there has always been a dilapitated and run down feel to that part of the strip and the surrounding neighborhoods. Them not adding the coaster did nothing to improve the area or increase the value.... I would dare say it did just the opposite. THe only ones against it are bitter old folk whom do not like entertainment ironic in itself given where they live! I was super stoked when this was proposed and I remember that scale model vividly walking into the casino... I always had hope that when the new owners came in and they recently changed the name, that they would look to reattempt a proposal of this idea yet sadly that is not the case.

Knowing Vegas, people were probably drunk designing this
If this happened, Cedar point would go for 800.

Hello I just got back from my cruise on February 6 or 5 it was AMAZING
I think it would be 100% a gimmick. And that's what I go to Las Vegas for!
Whether it's half an Eiffel Tower, dancing fountains or a gondola ride on a powered track, it's part of the magic that is Las Vegas.
The more ridiculous the idea, the more I will go.
Residents: You can’t build the coaster there!
Coaster enthusiasts: THIS IS WAR
Never heard of this coaster concept, thanks for this video!
0:55 is that Wild Thing at Wild Waves? Such a tiny park, its always cool to see it represented on channels like this
I never heard about this coaster during 2000, until I came across this video during this past spring. The idea of the 700 foot Fish Hook coaster can still get build now, all they have to do is find a manufacturer to do the building. That local neighborhood can no longer do anything about it, and I'm pretty sure that Jack Levine is long dead. Now is the time for the Fish Hook coaster to rise up from the ground for thrill seeker's to enjoy. I want to see this thing come to life hopefully by 2022, we will KNOW about riding a 700 coaster someday.
It’s Vegas! If it came to fruition, that would be the place to do it!
Being completely and totally honest, while impressive, it would have probably been a bit less than advertised. Enthusiasts seem to only consider full circuit coasters for "firsts," at least when it comes to height. Happened with Millennium Force and Superman: Escape from Krypton for first Giga and with Magnum XL 200 and Moonsault Scramble for first hyper.
Gladiator Dragon Tower of Terror for first Giga.
Did the skyliner tower in Orlando get scrapped?
Kevin Thompson I don’t know, but it’s likely.
I Think so
After several delays it is now expected to open in 2021
@@wouterh480 really????
@@godkinghell15 according to Wikipedia, the complex is about to open this year and the rollercoaster the following year
Love the content!!
Awesome video, to be honest I think it would’ve been a fun ride with an absolutely incredible first drop, but I don’t think it would’ve been a world-class coaster.
reminder about your music in the description promise ;) great video! such an interesting topic.
Haha yeah the ones that were already uploaded I need to go back and put the music in, but I did do that here a couple hours late
A giant tower construction opposed by several powerful factions, yet in the end the city council approved it, anyway. How could such a thing come to pass in Las Vegas? Hmm....
Most random location ever for a 700ft rollercoaster
Awesome video, I’ve literally never once heard about this before now. Weird story.
honestly i know this feels weird but maybe this is the mandela effect lol. jk but seriously its quite something that a project like this is not more well known.
I actually jumped off the stratosphere before in vegas
Wow, another fantastic video!!
Xscream is a blast. I also think the height will be reached someday
When I heard those original stats my mind started spinning. I can’t decide if I’m disappointed or relieved it wasn’t built. But a 700 foot face first drop and a 400 beyond vertical spike sounds terrifying. No I don’t think this will be attempted again, at least not for a very long time. 500 feet possibly, especially with RMC around. But no higher.
Madeline Garber It’s already been attempted a second time (Though it’s doubtful that it will actually be built): Just look up Skyplex Orlando
I miss high roller! I can legit say I rode the tallest roller coaster in the world at age 8 lol but this addition would’ve be interesting especially with maintenance with a 700 foot coaster running hot in the desert sun.
I never knew about this proposal. It's very interesting. It would've been a legit one-trick pony, but it would've been an awesome trick!
This is a really interesting concept I want to see!
Can’t wait for the collab with theme park media
How would they have gotten the train off once it finished valleying at the bottom???
They wouldn’t. It could only be ridden once.
StamfordBridge lol
Maybe could've also had worlds first drop track, another record that held the evolution of coasters back 10 years
I believe they would have had a hatch at the bottom to back the trains back into the base of the tower
Airtime Thrills Maybe like those on Giovanola/Intamin Freefalls?
"Who wants to live under a rollercoaster?" 6:42
That would actually be pretty cool to see the ride over your head as you're walking into your house. Hearing the sounds of the ride would also be cool
Could you imagine that dude throwing such a fit if the mob still ran Vegas?
I love coasters for what they are, and not only as a gimmick! I'm kinda glad this project never came to fruition. Sure, it would've set records, before the alteration discussions, but the other notable coasters out there due to their QUALITY, like Steel Dragon, El Toro and Kingda Ka are great for the rides they are.
I still fuckin want this coaster. My dad lived like a half mile from stratosphere and when we would be outside hanging out we would always get a goofy smile when we heard people riding the big shot at the top screaming their heads off. The lady who said " that's what Vegas is lights excitement and noise" and hearing people enjoying themselves in a place designed for it is enough to make anyone smile.
So make the fuckin coaster so we can have a new reason to go get crazy in the diamond in the desert
I’m a Vegas local and my prom was at the top of the Stratosphere. Vegas high schools definitely know how to throw a prom
Smh freaking people always ruining something dope. Why the hell would you live right off the strip if you're trippin about noise? They do the same thing here in the bay whenever anybody tries to build anything.
People want to ensure that the poors aren't having anything that would resemble fun.
These people who do this are the same old people starring out their window complaining and reporting their neighbors for their kids playing outside too loudly. 🙄
@@GMoney-B so, as per usual, it's nosy Boomers ruining the fun for everyone else.
@@GMoney-B There the sort of people who just love to complain.

It’s the same people that moved next to Alton Towers when it was already a big theme park and then complained about the noise
Would have been on my bucket list
how have I never heard of this

this video is way longer than it needs to be
Wow...this is amazing. I never even heard about this until now. That’s crazy. Wish they would’ve went through with it.
They’ll have it built by RMC.
James F. T. rex with launch at the base for speed record and to make it a full circuit
Yeah and it would he broke so damn much and it’s all way the Down at the end of the strip. Doubt it would get to many riders. And the noise restraints would be pretty bad as well. The roller coaster at the New York hotel is in good ass business based on its great location on the strip. Big short is really good and an amazing view though! Jumping off the hotel is a one of a kind experience!

honestly i do think it would be more of a historial landmark then an actual ride. if it was built. like i do think a coaster like this is good in theory and on paper but in real life i think it would cause a few issues.
X-Scream is insane and I'm glad I rode it when I was a much braver 18 year old vs now. lol
I feel like this would have most certainly been a giant gimmick but it would be one that everyone would have to ride leading to an initial success. The problem is I dont think the average person would really want to get on it leading to a stagnation in popularity and its eventual removal
I'm a BIG coaster buff, but never heard anything about this one. I have heard about the one that is supposed to be built in Orlando and be like 400ft, but not sure what the status is on that. I still love the coasters at Cedar Point and look forward to their next outing in that department, since they didn't have a new one this year for their 150th anniversary. Looking forward to riding Orion though at KIngs Island.
That would have been badass!
As someone from Vegas, it sucks this didn't get made. There isn't any roller coaster goodness anywhere nearby unless you head to Southern California or Farmington, Utah
10:54 After riding El Loco, I was like eh this wouldn't be that scary. Boy, I was not scared of any heights when I was 9, but man was I wrong. All of the rides in the Stratosphere were the scariest things I have ever done, and truly the best flat rides I rode. I did bungee jump off the tower, and that was as close you can get to the fish hook coaster, because it felt so amazing.
I love the idea of a gigantic 700ft coaster, but at the same time, having a giant steel monstrosity snaking out of the nice and pretty Strat tower would look rather odd.
When I heard this I thought it would be very intense
It probably would be
I remember when the Stratosphere was built, so many issues with it from someone setting it on fire to the crooked leg. The King Kong ride actually sounded really cool (there was supposed to be a 100 foot + drop as king King climbed up) too bad that one was scrapped.
I find myself watching more roller coaster videos than actually riding them lol, the engineering is fascinating to me.
FusRoDah2 same with me, I only have 8 credits and they’re mostly kiddie coasters.
@@DoswarePictures I live in Toronto so I've had my fair share of rides on the massive coasters like Behemoth and Leviathan. Amazing coasters.

So interesting. I didn’t know about this until now. It’s like it’s been lost in the archives.
You have fascinating videos. I've subscribed. I tend to see the argument of the residents. While I love coasters, I wouldn't want one in my neighborhood. It seems like something dumb my HOA would actually do, but it'd be a coaster that nobody who actually lives here would be allowed to ride.
I’m honestly not upset this wasn’t built. it seems like the type of thing that would have been removed after fiveish years. enthusiasts probably would consider it a gimmick coaster anyway.
Same. I already hate driving down that area. Don't need a rollercoaster making that area worse than it already is.
My mother had her marriage reception (second marriage) at Stratosphere and everyone was given free rides. I was able to go on the launching ride and Xtreme there. Would have loved to ride this ride if it made it.
I can't believe people complained about potential noise n Vegas!
RIP Arrow
If that ride opened, the people brave enough to ride this are insane.
Do you know of any videos with a timeline of or fully explaining the coaster wars? I'm a bit confused about the whole thing.
WaarHead the closest I know is just AT’s previous videos on the year Six Flags lost their minds and the best year for coasters.
He should make a full video on it
I agree with Dosware, my video about how Six Flags lost their minds is the best one for that topic
Nice video
I feel like this ride, if built, woulda crashed, the 700 foot drop is tall af, but it's spike to slow it down, even with it being beyond vertical, was still like 400 feet, i don't think it'd slow down enough by the time it got to the 400 foot mark and woulda flown off and smashed into the vegas strip.... good thing it was never made if that was the case or else we may not have gotten the things we have now.
Especially if it was built by arrow, there 100 foot coasters are rough enough lol.
At 122 mph I'm sure the spike would have been enough to handle the speed, comaring it to Superman's stats. Probably would be trimmed a bit too
Rmc the rmc that just got rmc'd. Following this, rmc it again.
Imagine if this was created...
This would have been an amazing coaster and I’m so disappointed by the opposition it faced. It’s also so ridiculous because when the observation tower of the Strat was being built it also faced opposition and people thought it was “tacky” “eye sore” “ugly” (not sure how you live in Vegas and consider something tacky) yet here it is a major tourist attraction, a hallmark of vegas, and source of revenue. This coaster would have been the same and the Strat really needs to upgrade their coasters (insanity has been closed for months now apparently).
With all the problems with Stratosphere rides, and the fact that they’ve closed down so many times, there is no way it would’ve succeeded.
