  • Today I'm working on my Mistletoe Ficus (Ficus deltoidea), It's first styling and re potting.
I meet Kale for the first time in person and we work on his Parrot's Beak (Gmelina philippensis) and his Cotoneaster bonsai.

Train in the background and the crunching of the feet in the snow, cool sound effects.

I think Kale did a great job with his presentation and on his trees. Great of you to steer him in the right direction. Your Ficus looks amazing. Sounds like Laura is building something in the background.

You’re always willing to try your techniques on different species. I dig that about you, Nigel!
That root work was a lot of fun. I thought there would be a lot more when you first dug it out, especially with that much fruit. It’ll be fun to see how it responds. Thanks for sharing the adventure(s) with us!

Nice root pruning and the rocks holding up the tree makes the tree look like the seed fell between 2 boulders and grew. Neat!!!

hi nigel, thank you for all the wonderful information in your videos. as a newbie, i am accumulating as much info as i can before spring here in Oz. ficus and jade grow really well here, so i am practising on them. you have helped me decide to be brave with my trimming, and i am also using some of the techniques on plants in the ground. also i am gathering unusual plants to try as well. i am looking forward to years of 'playing'. i also have the advantage of mild winters so no need for a hothouse - more a greenhouse for protection in summer.

Interesting pruning of the cotoneaster. The big cut is a good lesson. I really liked Kale's other plant; the leaves were lovely. All around good lesson on what to do with roots; when there are two circles of roots and how to decide. Think the round bonsai pot is a good choice for your mistletoe plant. I've never seen one before. Thank you so much for this Nigel.

Good video with Kale's visit. Like the Gmelina that he selected. They grow very well as garden plants here in southeast Florida. Hope that he will get it to flower. They have very unique flowers. These plants are also called Parrot's beak. Can you guess why? Since you like the mistletoe fig you might want to consider adding a ficus triangularis to your collection as well. Thanks for another interesting video.

I wonder if Kale can give you a cutting of the Parrot's Beak and try sprouting the roots in a root maker pot to develop the roots a bit better. Just a thought.

hi nigel. I have a green island ficus, it is always covered in figs but they grow very tight to the base of new leaves, I usually pick them off but worry that I'm damaging the new buds .

@@TheBonsaiZone that’d be a hoot! They do get a bit of a stalk by the end of summer. If they can stay alive for multiple years (with protection from cold) it might actually work, 😂
