    Wasn't born until the end of the 90's. But my dad watched Top Gun at least once every couple weeks when I was a kid. I loved it so much that for like 10 years as a kid I wanted to be a fighter pilot.

    This movie is so much fun. It has some great performances, fun characters, and awesome flying sequences. It's also very funny. I found the romance to be a bit dull, but that might be because I've only seen it once. It also gave us the classic '80s banger Danger Zone.

    I didn't realize Sean is born at the end of 1981. His birthday is 6 days before mine. So I'm nearly 1 year older. Whatever he said about how it left an impact on his childhood, it applies to me. I was 6 when I saw it. Then saw it repeatedly in 1987-1988.
    Top Gun was the first movie I remembered seeing that left a huge impression on me. I believe Tootsie was the first movie I saw in theaters remembering only because of the Stephen Bishop song. I was 2. But Top Gun was the first I truly remembered. I loved jet fighters and would get Micro-Machines of them as a kid.
    I did watch Top Gun on Netflix maybe 2.5 weeks ago. My first time seeing it in maybe 34 years? Um, yeah. There are parts that haven't aged well. It kinda felt like a Kenny Loggins/Berlin music video with some of the romance scenes. But it's still cool af. There's this 80s coolness that has never left it.
    I also might prefer Tony Scott over his older brother, Ridley. RIP to Tony. I didn't know about his suicide until years later. He jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge which I drive across when I drop off my parents to Long Beach for one of their cruises. I'm headed there this Friday. I always think of Tony every time I drive through it.
    Tony Scott made the coolest 80s movie in Top Gun and the coolest 90s movie in True Romance. Both movies are a product of their decades. For a movie, Top Gun is about a 7.5/10. For an 80s movie, it's a 9.5/10. It's quintessential 80s.
    Tom Cruise rarely makes sequels except for Mission: Impossible. It's cool he's returning to the franchise that made him a megastar. It's kinda like when Keanu went back to do another Bill & Ted movie. Great content, Sean. Can't wait for your review on Top Gun: Maverick. Might surpass The Batman and Multiverse of Madness for me in 2022.

    The romance was a bit cheesy and for my taste it didn't aged well but what can everyone agree is the impact that this movie left which it inspired a lot of people to be a pilot so I think the movie did it's job brilliantly for what they're trying to showcase for the theme of the movie

    • @crobeastness
      @crobeastness 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the romance is poorly writen and the the action set pieces arent very well shot. admittedly that is very hard to do since they are shooting actual jets, but still i couldn't tell what was going on most if the time. other than those two things, i loved everything else but they are significant portions of the movie enough to deflate the overall score to a less than steller number. in my 12 point scale, i give Top Gun (1986).... a 7.6 out of 12.

    • @madman00774
      @madman00774 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      People need to stop watching old movies from a 2022 eyes or present day perspective it came out in the 80s a different time period things are going to change I hate when people knock down points on a movie because it's of its time

    • @crobeastness
      @crobeastness 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@EazyRocko the romance was poorly done for its time though. There are hundreds of romance in film done much better before 1986

      @@EazyRocko uh yes you can especially if you just heard this movie and never heard the old one. You have to watch the movie and I still stand by this comment, while for the most part that the movie is very entertaining, the romance was written very poorly and dragged the story. Just because it's different time period doesn't mean it's automatically work for everyone

    As a 16-year-old, i absolutely love this movie, flaws and all. It might be the most 80s movie ever made, and that is just what I love about it. But like you said, it really doed have more emotional weight than people give it credit for. But what i really love about the maverick trailers, is that give off those Top Gun vibes, while still being a movie that’s made in 2019.

    92's central/east EU dude here... must have seen it a couple of times on TV over the years, but didn't have a clear memory of it. Only watched proper after seeing the new one 3x in theater. Now that was an experience.
    But yeah, definitely one for the ages. The part where you talk about how many people made it big from the cast later really hit home. Michael Ironside was a big hype moment for me. As General Jack Granger from C&C Tiberium Wars (2007 RTS video game) he took part in an IP that really played a major part in shaping me.

Oddly enough the only other movie (or movies) that I can think of that deal purely with flight are Hayao Miyazaki films, specifically Porco Rosso and The Wind Rises.

    Because of the TOP GUN MAVERICK MOVIE (which was PHENOMENAL) I HAD TO WATCH THE ORIGINAL AGAIN AFTER LONG TIME. AND Maaaaan Nostalgia CUTS LIKE A KNIFE HERE. I will BE VERY HONEST AND I'M NOT SCARE TO SHARE IT. The music, the love story, everything. One impression i get from watching the original is everyone look phenomenal and REAL, NATURAL. KELLY MCGINNIS looks gorgeous. And I love the fact that she is True to herself NOWADAYS, saying that she's now old and fat and age appropriate for her age and she is not forcing herself to look like all Hollywood glossy. And some people are killing her for that. Let her be who she is. She was and still is a beautiful woman. I would love to see her more taking care of herself, but for her health generaly. I'm not asking for her to BE SUPERMODEL as she was in her 20's or 30s, we all age differently. She is full aware of herself, her look and if you erase the fact that she got weight, everything about her STILL LOOKS REAL, and NATURAL without surgeries. And that got me thinking about the world we're living right now. Fake, where everybody are sensitive, men not acting like men sometimes. Women with copy/paste style, haircuts, fake boobs, lips, tattoos all over the body, plastic surgeries (I don't have nothing against that, but i have when it's over the top). No true romance, live conversations, everything it's about DM'S on Instagram or similar shit via social Media, clicking on our phones. We need to come back to basics. All of us. I love old-school movies like this with these romance stories where people used to SHOW EMOTIONS and SPILL THEIR GUTS over it just Like Maverick and Charlie HERE . Maybe it's cheese or corny or over the top or predictable for some new generations, but i love sometimes to watch good old popcorn movie without overthinking. Every scene with MAVERICK AND CHARLIE is sexy as hell, their chemistry is OFF THE CHART (my opinion), make me wish that we all have that type of woman/man in our life. And the SONG TAKE MY BREATH AWAY IS JUST LEGENDARY and brings so much emotions, real emotions. And by the way MAVERICK IS FANTASTIC SEQUEL. BOTH FILMS ARE GOOD IN THEIR OWN RIGHT(original is cheesy to someone but it's 80s. We can't look at that movie from this distance. For the Maverick they had 30+ years to develop the good story). I know it's little off the topic but i hope that there are still a lot of real people out there. DON'T BE AFRAID TO SHOW YOUR EMOTIONS NO MATTER WHAT SOCIETY TELLS YOU. BE REAL, be TRUE TO YOURSELF, LOVE YOURSELF for who you are and don't be shy to express it. It's ok in this case to like cheesy predictable movies like Top gun original. 😜

    Took me years to watch this since I was just a kid in the 80s. I could be wrong but I think this was one of Tom Cruise’s first big films. It’s one of a few films that I’ve seen that focuses on people flying jets. Haven’t seen many of those. I enjoy watching this movie whenever I can. By the ay did you film this video in Texas or was this when you were on your road trip?

    My family is very into aviation and we love aviation focused movies as well. We especially love good aviation movies. My family loves the movie Top Gun and we had the VHS tape and DVD when it came out as well and we even had the cassette tape for the soundtrack. My parents have even met Kenny Loggins at a concert and told him a funny story about my brother playing like he was in the movie while listening to Danger Zone on the Top Gun cassette tape soundtrack. We love good aviation movies. Denzel in the movie Flight is horrible. Tom Cruise in American Made was really good. Robert Downy Jr in the movie Air America is really good. My dad was even a mechanic on a B-17 bomber in the movie Memphis Belle and was a pilot in the movies Godzilla (90s) and The General’s Daughter.

    I have no nostalgia for it as I was born in the 90s and I did not own the movie. I just watched it for the first time today from beginning to end. I thought it was a fun and entertaining movie.

    I'm born in 2000 and Indian, so I watched this last week. And to be fair this felt like a film that had a lot of problems on what is more important. The jet stiff, or the cool factor. As you nentioned the 180 degree shift in tone did not help it for me.
    Overall, was it fun at times, yeah. The main story and character journey for Maverick is good stuff. However I think that this is a movie that only an American, and in particular an American who grew up in the 80s will connect to. For an Indian like me I have no emotion to it so I have to watch it for what it is, and it was okay (that's a B- from me) And even technically it felt dated. But I am gonna watch Top Gun: Maverick in theatres, and I am excited for it as it does seem like much better film even from the trailers

    I first watched this as an adult... didnt resonate with me at all... its ok I don't hate it by any means, but like you said it's all over the place totally, and for me it's kind of a boring movie. I'm just opposite in my thoughts. Love the channel Sean keep up the good work.

    The editing of the Jets and the aerial sequences in this movie is so incoherent and don’t make sense but it’s still good movie.

    I was born in 2006...and I am not a fan of this movie. Maverick was about 40 times better in my opinion. I felt that the story was a mess and the romance fell flat. It's definitely an 80s product. I also have always thought the action was bad, because I could never tell the planes apart. I haven't seen anyone else use that criticism, but that's my take. Maverick was great though.

    I didn’t grow up watching this movie, because I grew up in a household of all females. Lol. Also, my mom hates Tom Cruise!
    I had the opportunity to check this out on the big screen for the first time about 3 years back on a classic movie night at the local theater. I honestly don’t remember it to well, but I recall having a good time.
