    X2 on Webers sucking. I got out-wheeled by my cousins stock $200 Nissan Pathfinder going up a hill sure to the Weber I had. Then I turned it around and dealt with dying going down hills. I didn't want to meet with it and went to the certified machine 3k and it's been much better. Propane is what I'll go to next if I ever change it up.

    My stock 1.3 carb was a pos wouldn’t idle good, took forever to start, and sputtered a lot. I put a certified machine carb kit on it and it runs great! It doesn’t die on high angles either, didn’t even have to tune it.

    • @FortuneOffRoad

      I've heard great things about certified machine. If I was to stay carbed I would've tried them. Too much altitude change in my area and fuel leaking out of the gas filler and carb spillage. Propane is definitely the way to go for a rock crawled carb engine! Not so great on the street though 😬

    you've got a lot of great reasons for going propane, I went with the Certified Machine 3k because my Samurai almost never goes offroad, I have a Geo Tracker offroad buggy for that. But if I was wheeling my sammy a lot I could see the benefits for sure. With that said, I'll freely admit that I'm on the search for a 1.6L 8 valve.... the 1.3L hates me for running 35's lmao

      I got the 1.6 8v and run on 33s and I found that a regear at the tacase or axles make up for a loss power. I have the 6.5:1 gear set for the tcase and I have pretty much all I need for daily driving and offroad/crawling. Make sure you get a cradle for the tcase too if gear to the 6.5:1 for the added stress to the case and mounts.
      About carbs, I got the weber 38 flipped so it dies going on a decline. But keeping it in gear allows the engine to continue running. There's some incline 'mods' too that help, but it's still a bit tricky due to having a carb.

    I have 3 questions
    1) Is the pressure regulated from the tank itself ? if not there can be huge risk of fire on the pipeline.
    2) Can we install it like a hybrid fuel , switching from petrol to gas on the go.
    3) what is the mileage per kilogram ?

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, the fuel is pressurized from tank pressure. I don't think hybrid would be easy (or maybe even possible) since the propane kit comes with a mixer that replaces the carburetor. 4.3 gallons for 3 days of wheeling on the Rubicon. 15mpg on a steep 71 mile drive through the mountains back to my trailer. 🤙🏻

  • @kellyanderson7115
    @kellyanderson7115 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yep, the Weber sucks for off-road. That weber was designed for "performance" street a long time ago with no consideration made for off-road. Problem is the way the float is setup. It starts overflowing raw fuel into the engine when you start climbing. The stock Sammi carb was better for off-roading. I installed the 1.6 fuel injected engine to solve all of these problems.

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all based on RPMs it seems like. If you are 1100-1500 RPMs while wheeling like I am, then you'll burn about 1/5 gallon every hour, or 1.5 gallons every 8 hours. I did the Rubicon 3 days of wheeling at slow speeds and used 4.3 gallons total. Higher RPMS and harder driving might drop that though. Driving on the highway on the way home I got about 13mpg. Hope that helps. 🤙🏻

    Interesting concept, I wonder if someone makes a propane conversion for a jeep 4.0 (preferably dual fuel so I don't become stranded if I run out of propane and there isn't a fillup station nearby)?

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it's been done, but UT would be expensive. The reason why it works so well on carburetors is because there is only one input point where the air/fuel mixes. On injected engines you would have to find a way to get the propane into the fuel rail or directly into the cylinder on newer engines.

    • @MrToranaGuy
      @MrToranaGuy ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the Jeep a fuel injected or Carb fed 4.0? You can get Impco gear that can fit a LPG mixer like a model 225, or if it's fuel injected, you can get a LPG Injection setup that can be fit, and you just press a switch to switch between fuels.

      I have two 33-pound tanks (like what's in this video), and roughly can go about ~200 miles (~100 miles per tank). Exact mileage is hard to gauge, due to I'm never sure if the guy filling the tanks is max'n them out or not, various roads/terrain I'm driving on, and transfer case selection: 2H, 2L, 4H, 4L. So basically my "~200 mile range" is based on a mix of highway and offroad.
      I did rig up some fittings so I can hook up a BBQ tank as a spare (Got Propane sells a device, which I purchased, but it's for old style tanks with fine threads, not the 'newer' course threaded safety valve fittings).

      You should check out GotPropane.com they have a lot of info regarding this upgrade. Has been nothing but spectacular on the trail. A money saver too!

    Great vid FO-R, I enjoy seeing your work, and come away learning something each time.

    I made a little box around my tanks. Eventual plan is to cover it in sheet metal (did that once already, but used more square stock and 20 gauge sheet metal and it turned outWAY too heavy). Anywho, I'll eventually seal it up (and seal to the floor), gravity vent out the old gas tank filler hole. Also with the containment box I'll make a flip-up door, and install the tank brackets on 500lbs heavy duty drawer sliders that'll extend out 3', making tank removal/install a breeze. ...all are part of my life's "one of these days I'll get around to..." plan.
    I LOVE the propane swap, other than the occasional headache finding convenient fueling stations.

      Your box setup over the tanks looks great! I'm going to need something along those lines soon. I really need to maximize space though. Long trips require a lot of gear! 🤙🏻
