  • After a day on the Toorongo River last season, I dropped into the Loch River on the way home. Having never fly fished it, I was surprised at the number of fish notwithstanding the high water. I can't wait to fish dries up here in summer!

Its so good to see a video raw and as it happened. Thanks for this mate. It makes my fishing trips seem more normal. I also appreciate your manners and choice of words too. It says a lot about your character and makes your videos much more appealing so thank you

Fished the Loch on the weekend and I'm glad to see it's not just me having problems with how tight it can be.
I used a 7' 2wt and orange beaded grub nymphs and caught my first couple of browns.
Thanks for the vids Tom, I'm learning a lot from them.

Love the unedited footage - its good to see the trial and error, scrub hookups, tripping over logs. Reminds us all that you're a mere mortal like us ;)

Great video Tom showing excellent adaption to the tight conditions. Most of us would have taken a quick look & given up.

    G'Day,
Enjoyed your video very much. The Loch looks very similar to some of the overgrown little creeks that I fish in and around Healesville. I've been thinking of trying new(to me) waters around Noogee, including the Loch River, in September, provided we are able to travel anywhere with COVID19 restrictions. Fingers crossed!
I usually fish a 6'6" 3/4 wt in small streams although I have started using a 5 foot tenkara style rod with 6 foot of line plus tippet. It's very up close and personal fishing but has enough reach for tiny creeks.
    Cheers,
    Steve.

Hey very nice! You'll love it on the rivers like the Tooorongo fishing like that. Thanks for watching Steve!

Oh, and keep up your bow and arrow casts skills for that tight scubby stream.

Love fishing with a 2 to 3 wt short rod, haven't done too much though in the last couple of years due to the drought. Try a elk hair caddis even during winter you may be surprised. Cheers

Another local - the water doesn't get too much clearer up there, but the trout are beautiful, naturally recruiting stock and awesome to catch.

"Svrček (I think that's how one spells it) with the metallic red", you say. Is that the French Nymph, the Droz Nymph or what you called it?
Always the confusion with those three names. I'm very interested with the history and the story associated with them. When I meet Martin, I hope to have a good conversation with him about that.
Do you reckon Daniel uses 7X too? Ha ha ha! 😃
Good one Tom - a little stream that will work you out big time; just as you've found.

Great little spot Tom, those squirmy worms look good I'll have to tie some. I wonder if whiting would take em?

I'm sure the tan ones and some of the other colours would go very well. Bream eat them which is a good sign

Great video. I'm a reasonably experienced fly fisher, and tie my own flies, and must admit I've never seen a worm fly used for trout, or seen a pattern for one, although it makes complete sense especially in the high water you are fishing here. Seen them for saltwater, heavily weighted for whiting etc, but never trout. Did you invent that pattern yourself? If so, I'd be interested in the recipe.

Good vid Tom. I love your guys small creeks, although seeing how overgrown it is makes me terrified of snakes haha. I think that comes with being a kiwi. What material are you using for your worm fly? It looks nice and wiggly.
