I don't think any of the stealth fighter's in development are just blatant copies of the F-22. All stealth fighters share the same basic configuration because at the moment that is most ideal configuration in terms of stealth and aerodynamic performance.. Granted I'm sure Russia and China referenced the F-22 when designing there stealth fighters but it's no different than the U.S. clearly referencing the Yak-141 when designing the F-35B Lighting II. I think it would be very difficult/impossible to design a stealth fighter that didn't at least have a passing resemblance to the F-22.
Impossibly Black I have been working on the JSF-35 production team(contractor with Lockheed Martin) and I can take at glance at this airframe and tell youth truth. The Chinese is simply copying the F-35 and have studied the stealth capabilities of the F-22 raptor.

The engines are the old ones from Su27. It is used as temporary "suitable engine" on J31. The black smoke is from the incomplete combustion of the fuel. I think they are going to make a new engine specifically designed for them.

In terms of airframe, this fighter has good design as a stealth. But, J-31 doesn't have good engine as 5th generation fighter. It always need to turn on afterburner for maneuvering. Afterburner on renders stealth capability, making it easy prey for even a 4th generation fighter like F-18 or Su-27.
A mix between F-22 and F35 be interesting to see how it advances and just how stealthy it really is, but its a start, and China is trying to advance its air capabilities.
NO country other than US and China has the capability and the will to develop two stealth fighters simultaneously. Had it been equipped more powerful engines, J31 can be a rival to F35...so let's just wait and see if an indigenous engine can be developed.
Neither of Chinas so called stealth fighters are stealthy. Therefore the terms "Stealth" and "5th Generation" should not be used when mentioning the J-20 or J-31. It would take much, much more then engines for the J-31 to even come close to rivaling the F-35.
This is more like a unmatured airframe prototype... It seems ShenYang Aircraft Co is struggling to compete against Chengdu's J20. So they hurried to showcase their own 5th gen with old Russian jet engines. Though nowadays leaked photos show this aircraft is a lot more polished and has the potential to abroad carriers. You gotta admit Chinese jet engine industries start rather late and was heavily influenced by Russian counterparts. But oh boi, they learn fast. Within the next few years we are likely to see it go head to head with F35 Naval versions.
The J20 also tested with old engines before transitioning to WS-10s for testing too, tossing an old engine that has close/identical profiles just as a tech demo is not anything new even for countries like the USA (see F14) and the Russians (see SU57). The filming here featured a rather old (probably 2nd plane) of the FC-31 where it doesn't have forward swept tail fins unlike the 3rd known plane and a mock-up on a mock-up carrier. It is indeed a prototype and nothing wrong with that.
I do not think that the Chinese could copy any more than the shape. If they can not copy a Russian engine then will not be able to copy an whole F-35. And even less improve it. Maybe that's why Jane (military magazine) never appoint J-31 as copy of F-35. Only yours readers.
F35 is based on the Russian YAK141 VTOL aircraft. Why do all stealth fighters look similar on first sight? Obvious; because if you want to mix high manouverability with stealth the computer generated image can only come up with such a design. There isn't anywhere else you can go. You can have two engines instead of one but the plane would still look quite similar. If you try to change the shape making it more stealthy you can somethging like the Spirit stealth bomber which displayed very bad manouverability charachteristics. If you want to increase manouverability you reduce stealth and get something like the F22 or the Sukhoi T50. The compromise is the F35 and the J31.

Lol, so many jokes about the diesel engines. It has to be effecient yk😂 The smoke is something that happens on all jets though. At lower thrust levels, when you pull off or put on the throttle, the unburnt fuel makes smoke. Jet engines are not the most effecient things at low speed so when jets are speeding along or just at high altitude, the smoke is spread out in alot of air and not visible.

Lmao, you don't know anything about aerodynamics. J31 is longer and thinner than F35, which makes J31 more suitable for interception and air superiority missions than F35. Only a fool would design a fighter plane as bulky and overweight as F35. The F35 is more like an attack plane.

In terms of airframe, this fighter has good design as a stealth. But, J-31 doesn't have good engine as 5th generation fighter. It always need to turn on afterburner for maneuvering. Afterburner on renders stealth capability, making it easy prey for even a 4th generation fighter like F-18 or Su-27.
A mix between F-22 and F35 be interesting to see how it advances and just how stealthy it really is, but its a start, and China is trying to advance its air capabilities.

NO country other than US and China has the capability and the will to develop two stealth fighters simultaneously. Had it been equipped more powerful engines, J31 can be a rival to F35...so let's just wait and see if an indigenous engine can be developed.

Neither of Chinas so called stealth fighters are stealthy. Therefore the terms "Stealth" and "5th Generation" should not be used when mentioning the J-20 or J-31. It would take much, much more then engines for the J-31 to even come close to rivaling the F-35.
This is more like a unmatured airframe prototype... It seems ShenYang Aircraft Co is struggling to compete against Chengdu's J20. So they hurried to showcase their own 5th gen with old Russian jet engines. Though nowadays leaked photos show this aircraft is a lot more polished and has the potential to abroad carriers. You gotta admit Chinese jet engine industries start rather late and was heavily influenced by Russian counterparts. But oh boi, they learn fast. Within the next few years we are likely to see it go head to head with F35 Naval versions.
The J20 also tested with old engines before transitioning to WS-10s for testing too, tossing an old engine that has close/identical profiles just as a tech demo is not anything new even for countries like the USA (see F14) and the Russians (see SU57).
The filming here featured a rather old (probably 2nd plane) of the FC-31 where it doesn't have forward swept tail fins unlike the 3rd known plane and a mock-up on a mock-up carrier. It is indeed a prototype and nothing wrong with that.
I do not think that the Chinese could copy any more than the shape. If they can not copy a Russian engine then will not be able to copy an whole F-35. And even less improve it. Maybe that's why Jane (military magazine) never appoint J-31 as copy of F-35. Only yours readers.
American engineers provided all that to China unlike the Russians.
F35 is based on the Russian YAK141 VTOL aircraft. Why do all stealth fighters look similar on first sight? Obvious; because if you want to mix high manouverability with stealth the computer generated image can only come up with such a design. There isn't anywhere else you can go. You can have two engines instead of one but the plane would still look quite similar. If you try to change the shape making it more stealthy you can somethging like the Spirit stealth bomber which displayed very bad manouverability charachteristics. If you want to increase manouverability you reduce stealth and get something like the F22 or the Sukhoi T50. The compromise is the F35 and the J31.

Putting two engines on it will make it less manueverable due to center of weight shift and those engine are smaller so its possible its weaker.... Not to mention. That they followed the original V tail angle... Thats gonna hurt rudder control

The smoke is something that happens on all jets though. At lower thrust levels, when you pull off or put on the throttle, the unburnt fuel makes smoke. Jet engines are not the most effecient things at low speed so when jets are speeding along or just at high altitude, the smoke is spread out in alot of air and not visible.
