Looking at the roots of your Cebu brought up a question I’ve had recently. I have had decades of outdoor gardening experience, and only recently (started in pandemic like everyone else) have I focused on trying to grow anything other than Pothos or African Violets indoors. Despite the truth that plants require aeration in the soil, they also feel more secure when they have latched on to something. In the wild, they will go through the loamy surface soil and begin drilling into the denser soil below. Since I’ve started using “chunkier” potting soil, I’m noticing that my indoor plants’ roots are going straight down, as well. Wondering if maybe we need to provide a denser mix in some cases? Or else just generally get them in bigger pots? Don’t know if it is scientifically true, but there is a piece of gardening advice that in a healthy plant the roots grow as big as the growth above ground. Just thought I’d mention, as I know you enjoy going down the rabbit hole and might find researching this question interesting. Thanks so much for sharing your cautionary tale! I always enjoy the care you take to provide the best information possible. Also thought I’d mention, as my degree is in Chemical Engineering, that if a person doesn’t understand all the components in their fertilizer, they may wish to refrain from using hydrogen peroxide until certain all the fertilizer is rinsed off, as the oxidation by-products could be difficult to predict.
Honestly, the only plants I’ve noticed that be a huge issue on are primarily my syngonium, but it doesn’t seem to matter what type of soil I put them in because they will still do that. And my other Epipremnum are in the same mix as my Cebu blue and they didn’t do that. So who knows exactly why sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t.
Hydrogen peroxide can interact with fertilizer! It makes perfect sense, now that you say it, but oh boy! I only use H²O² when a plant is severely infested with fungus gnats and I call it "going scorched earth." I haven't don't it often, but it is effective when I don't want to buy a whole collection's worth of beneficial nematodes. I'm wondering now how other insecticides, even natural chemicals like Neem Oil, might interact! I've been adding BTI to my water (I use RO for my plants) along with Cal-Mag and Gold Leaf (American, not the Liquid GL in the UK.) I use SuperThrive with BTI on moss poles and alone when I'm acclimating a new plant or water propagating. I alternate between SuperThrive and the Cal-Mag combo for my few self watering Pon plants. (Yes, I'm low key battling fungus gnats and really need those nematodes!) I even have drosera and pinguicula working with me in a few bogs! I keep waffling between chemicals and integrated pest management. I haven't had great luck with predatory mites and only saw one green lacewing... And I buy directly from Arbico as I live in Tucson. So, if you've managed to read all of that, what red flags does it raise for you? Have you got any advice? I'd be deeply appreciative of any scientific or anecdotal info you've got to pass along. Ohhhkaayyyy. This happened to me, but I didn't know why until just now. I even saw the crystals on my countertop and thought that looks awfully .... weird to be offering to my plants .... but the fertilizer came so highly-highly-highly regarded. So I watered everyone with hot pockets of my solution and ended up burning them. I had the sense to douse the fussy ones with distilled days afterwards and they forgave me. After watching your video I looked at the label & it mentions the crystals in tiny sideways print. Did I read that at the time? Nope. Would I have understood or appreciated the magnitude of that tiny print? Nope. As it was, I think I remember the ratio of fertilizer-to-water already being minuscule, making the bottle gigantic in relation to my needs; diluting it even further for what reason in mind? The bottle I purchased was hard to find too. I eventually discovered it in an obscure store on the back of a dusty old shelf for 50% off. I can only imagine the crystals I lugged home in that beauty now. Honestly, I've been so trigger-shy on fertilizer ever since and I didn't know why. This is awesome to understand now, so very appreciative of this video! Thank you :)

So sorry you are having this problem. But, it does teach us a lot! I bottom water most of my plants. Once every couple months I flush them from the top with no fertilizer to get rid of any salt buildup. I tend to be an overwaterer more than over fertilizing which doesn't really matter...both things can equal dead plants. Lol. I'm learning so much from you though and I thank you for that!!
Very good video. I was using a liquid fertilizer that was not expired and noticed something floating in the water even after mixing it. I switched to a fertilizer that is not liquid and it dissolves completely. The directions say to flush once a month with plain water. This fertilizer is designed for use with hard water which I have. I also feed at half dose. It is working well for me so far.
@AlohaPlantLife I am using the MSU orchid fertilizer that is made for well water. It is supposedly not just for orchids. I guess it takes into account the qualities of hard water and high mineral content of well water although not all well water is the same so wondering about that!
Thank you for this education. Not covered by most growers. I have a calathea warscewicii(sp!) and I made the mistake of planting it from growers smallpot into a bigger one an with Miracle Grow PRE Fertlized for aroids. I am certain this caused first new leaves to yellow,become crisp despite my knowing how to correctly provide light and humidity and watering. After 2 mos. this has stopped and the new leaves are perfect. Lesson learned.
Sorry this happened to you. Foliage Pro is my go to fert. I think it’s perfectly balanced complete fert. Use it 1/4 strength every watering and add silica for anything with variegation. Great point on the crystals. I actually put my liquid fert in a dropper bottle for distribution into my watering cans. Two droppers full and done. Always see crystals around the lid. If you use full strength, since the dose is so small, easy to over do it.
Very helpful video! I noticed a bunch of yellow spots like that on my Hoya carnosa about a month ago and I thought it was just too much sun so I moved it away from the window. Now I’m wondering if it was too much fertilizer. I’ll have to be more careful.
Oh this is heartbreaking and I'm sure there were some tears shed (I know I would have been devastated)! I use Jack's Classic 20-20-20 (powder form) on pretty much all my plants, a tiny 1/16 tsp (got the tiny measuring spoons on Amazon) per quart of distilled water. I do have some cactus-specific organic liquid fertilizer that is lower in nitrogen and I will be sure to check for crystallization the next time I use it. Thank you for sharing this, as painful as it was!

I reached out to liqui dirt and asked if there mix that you make when you first get the packet ever expire they tell me no I'm not so sure if that's true but he said it never goes bad. But thanks for sharing this info. We all have strange things that happen to our plants. your like me. I never stop til I figure it out.
Hello I had a Thai con on the struggle bus. I tried everything and finally put it in leca it's doing exceptionally well now.! Roots are perfect and plentiful and I'm from 1 leaf to 5 and sizing up nicely I am very glad I put my struggle Thai in leca and will keep it there! Good luck the roots are looking great in water there ❤
Good to hear! Definitely considering trying leca for it again once the roots get more developed. Do you have it in a no drainage situation or do you have it in like a drainage situation with a water reserve pot?
Im wondering if, now that Drea's Thai Con has some roots, (and I'm watching this months later so this may be answered in later videos) but I'm wondering if established water roots might transition more readily to leca or other semi-hydro...
Oh I'm so sorry for you and your plants ... and I hope the plants recover quickly I measure the EC value (electrical conductivity) with every fertiliser solution - this only works with mineral fertilisers (not with organic ones) . So I'm sure that the plants are not getting too high dose. Such a measuring device doesn't cost much (approx. €25-30) ...
Ohhh 😢 it’s bad for you. Because majority of my plants are drama queen and sensitive to salt and all, my fertlizer is Growth technology Foliage Focus this one have no sodium, no chlorides and no urea. The fertilizer you name it I never see this in Canada. I hope the best for your plants, you see and you correct quickly 🤞 This is very informative 💛
Oh holy crap. I started buying plants 3 months ago after going a few years without many (only a few that survived my depression-induced neglect - I'm over it now, thank God). I'm a lazy waterer in the best of times and follow the "weakly weekly (or less)" fertilizing program. I only fertilize on Sundays and if something desperately needs water Mon thru Sat, they get it w/o, and if it's too wet to water on Sun, it just doesn't get fert that week. So I bought a bunch of plants (still doing it) and dug out my NINE-YEAR-OLD bottle of Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro. I actually researched the shelf life issue and somewhere saw someone say that it doesn't go bad, but the KLM does. So I purchased new KLM and put 4 ounces of the Foliage Pro in a brown glass bottle with an eye dropper and proceeded to use 4 drops per pint or 32 drops per gal of water. I will say, I don't recall there being any crystals on the threads of the Dyna-Gro bottle opening, but if there were, I would have wiped them away. I will also say I've always been in the habit of over shaking a bottle of anything and everything before I open it. Just a habit I've been in over the years, and it might have saved some plants if I managed to re-dissolve any crystals that were in the liquid. I guess I'm lucky because I haven't had any broad issues across my plants. BUT the old Dyna-Gro is hitting the trash and I just ordered a new bottle from Amazon. And I only ordered the 8 oz instead of the quart, even though it's twice as expensive and goes against my frugal brain's grain. Thank God it'll be here before before Sunday. Thank you for this video! I've subscribed and am watching a bunch of your videos and trying to remember to hit that like button everytime. Hint: Remind viewers to hit the like button a little earlier in your videos. How does everyone use liqui dirt? It says it never expires, and I made the mix according to the directions. But it makes no sense to me that I should put 2 tbsp on each plant after its watered... 2 inch pot vs 2 gallon pot... Does anyone just mix a certain amount in the feeding water like other liquid ferts? FTR, I typically use Foliage Pro, and love it. I have been plant sitting for a couple months and they came with liqui dirt
I hope someone else on here can help you out with this question. I’ve heard great things about liquid dirt, but I personally never used it just because I’m vegan and it has some non-vegan components in it. But I feel confident, a fellow subscriber will be able to help you out.💚
Such a useful video - thank you. I fertilised my indoor coffee plant today, except I did it outside and left it soaking probably longer than I meant to. And now her leaves have all drooped and gone soft! Can’t work out of it’s fertiliser burn or cold shock, but I hope she recovers 😪🙏🏼
@@AlohaPlantLife pleased to report that 24-hours later she had fully bounced back to her former lush green healthy self, save for some browning to the tips of a couple of the larger leaves. Lesson learned!
.. I see salt build up on top of my pots, even on my Leca.. But, every 3 month or so I give all my plants a Flush Clean.. No fertilizer, just the flush clean mixed with water as I do with fertilizer and then I water each and every plant in the sink, letting the water really flush through, and the water coming out shows how needed it is.. It cleans up the soil and the roots and flush out every little bit of salt build up, fertilizer and whatever else that needs to go.. I leave them in the sink while cleaning the leaves, one at the time and then I take them back to their places.. Next time they need watering I start over with fertilizer as usual.. Leca I always have some ready for use, so if smaller pots I just change it, if in big pots I flush them really good..

I purchased the bonide liquid plant food online recently from the amazon shop. It arrived with a broken seal and some leakage into the box. After watching this video a while back, im nervous to use it. Do you think its still safe for my plants , or should i purchase something else locally?

So I purchased new KLM and put 4 ounces of the Foliage Pro in a brown glass bottle with an eye dropper and proceeded to use 4 drops per pint or 32 drops per gal of water. I will say, I don't recall there being any crystals on the threads of the Dyna-Gro bottle opening, but if there were, I would have wiped them away. I will also say I've always been in the habit of over shaking a bottle of anything and everything before I open it. Just a habit I've been in over the years, and it might have saved some plants if I managed to re-dissolve any crystals that were in the liquid. I guess I'm lucky because I haven't had any broad issues across my plants. BUT the old Dyna-Gro is hitting the trash and I just ordered a new bottle from Amazon. And I only ordered the 8 oz instead of the quart, even though it's twice as expensive and goes against my frugal brain's grain. Thank God it'll be here before before Sunday. Thank you for this video! How does everyone use liqui dirt? It says it never expires, and I made the mix according to the directions. But it makes no sense to me that I should put 2 tbsp on each plant after its watered... 2 inch pot vs 2 gallon pot... Does anyone just mix a certain amount in the feeding water like other liquid ferts?
FTR, I typically use Foliage Pro, and love it. I have been plant sitting for a couple months and they came with liqui dirt
I hope someone else on here can help you out with this question. I’ve heard great things about liquid dirt, but I personally never used it just because I’m vegan and it has some non-vegan components in it. But I feel confident, a fellow subscriber will be able to help you out.💚

Such a useful video - thank you. I fertilised my indoor coffee plant today, except I did it outside and left it soaking probably longer than I meant to. And now her leaves have all drooped and gone soft! Can’t work out of it’s fertiliser burn or cold shock, but I hope she recovers 😪🙏🏼

@@AlohaPlantLife pleased to report that 24-hours later she had fully bounced back to her former lush green healthy self, save for some browning to the tips of a couple of the larger leaves. Lesson learned!
.. I see salt build up on top of my pots, even on my Leca.. But, every 3 month or so I give all my plants a Flush Clean.. No fertilizer, just the flush clean mixed with water as I do with fertilizer and then I water each and every plant in the sink, letting the water really flush through, and the water coming out shows how needed it is.. It cleans up the soil and the roots and flush out every little bit of salt build up, fertilizer and whatever else that needs to go.. I leave them in the sink while cleaning the leaves, one at the time and then I take them back to their places.. Next time they need watering I start over with fertilizer as usual.. Leca I always have some ready for use, so if smaller pots I just change it, if in big pots I flush them really good..

All jokes aside, I'm so sorry! Especially for your Thai 😢😢 I think it was too stressed for the leca, unless that leaf was going to go anyway. The new roots are looking fantastic now. I realise you have a tonne of experience, but I love the leca queen on TH-cam and it helped me get my head around passive hydro. Can't wait to see how your plants recover 🫶

Drea, that yellow leaf on your splendid actually looks like the leaves of the very high priced variegated anthuriums of today, i honestly cannot tell the difference, its just too funny to me that unless im told its variegation, i will just think its sick and dying lol, great video. 😁😁

I purchased the bonide liquid plant food online recently from the amazon shop. It arrived with a broken seal and some leakage into the box. After watching this video a while back, im nervous to use it. Do you think its still safe for my plants , or should i purchase something else locally?

I learned the hard way with plants less is more.
I've learned to not fertilize from October till March and then resume. It has worked for everything for over 40+ years now :))

Bloody hell, I overfertilised my marantas - I suspected pests, but couldn´t find anything even with a magnifying glass, and they have more fertiliser than they should. It looks exactly like yours
