  • The video is the sequel to "5 most common downwind mistakes" with more common downwind mistakes beginners often make and how to correct them. Shot with Hero Session camera and recorded while coaching Tom doing a downwind Stand Up Paddleboarding run from Hawaii Kai to Kahala.
Some tips covered in the video:
If you fall, don't fall onto the board, fall into the water and watch for the board flipping over in windy conditions.
If the board is upside down, use the wind direction to help you flip it back over, it's easiest to flip the board over from the tail of the board.
When you get back on, make sure the leash is not wrapped around the tail or fin.
Catch your breath, start on your knees to get the board moving before standing up again.
Stay more upright, start easy and conserve your energy for later.
Try to relax and let your legs and hips do the balancing.
Use forward strokes and avoid pulling the paddle too far back and leaning forward into stokes too far.
Start paddling for the bump early and end early and let the board glide as much as possible.
When gliding move your hips forward to get in a relaxed surf stance while gliding.
Use a staggered stance for more front to back balance.
Use the paddle to brace but avoid steering/ breaking with the paddle while bracing.
Avoid steering by breaking, try to use steering strokes and crossbow steering to adjust course and then try to keep your board on course.
Focus on catching bumps that take you in the direction you want to go.
Try to relax and get in tune with the rhythm of the ocean.
Improve your balance and strengthen your legs by exercising with a balance board.
    Know where you are going.
Safety first, go with an experienced partner and bring a phone and/or EPIRB.
    Most importantly: Have Fun!
    Thanks for watching, Aloha,

Sometime could you cover tips on moving to shorter, narrower, lower volume boards for surfing. Any help on getting into a surf stance in choppy water and how best to catch waves on short performance boards with shorter paddles. A lot of it is just spending time on the water but it seems like there are some non-intuitive issues with balance and wave catching on a short SUP.

Hi SeadartVSG, Sorry there is no easy answer. The tips for balancing on a small board are basically the same as balancing on a bigger board, you just have to work your way down to smaller and smaller boards, one step at a time. Your balance improves as you go down in width and volume until you find a size that suits you well. Here are two videos, balance tips for beginners that also apply for more advanced paddlers:
