I love to run the full range option with my throttle (so the backward position = max reverse thrust, center = zero thrust). The hard stop would make a lot of sense there.
That's a neat function. I have the A-10 HOTAS with the rudders. The mechanical feel is the best thing about it. Being able to customize the throttle is a good idea. An analog thumbstick with an adjustable height distance would be desired for the lateral and vertical thrust. Another analog for eye middle or ring finger for free look would also be nice to have. The key is the ability to change the height of the analog sticks depending on the desired level of detail for the movements. I fully recommended everyone getting rudders if you're using a HOTAS on a side note. In all, it looks good. Nice concept.
oh man, that is perfect for DCS with Idle and afterburner detents. so for example with the F-5E tiger have the hard stop at the start (so the throttle is locked at 0 before startup of the engine) and then the small dent at 90% to mark the spot the afterburner kicks in.
It'll be really useful for space sims for people who like the full reverse and forward range on their throttle rather than forward-only. Having a clear detent at the centre (i.e. stop) point will help a lot in that situation.
For ED, assuming we use the full range of the throttle to be -100% to 100%. For ED I would definitely use the long plate to add a center notch to mark the transition between forward and reverse. It would also be good to feel + - 50% throttle, (i.e a long plate with 3 notches)
I like your idea of joining the release levers, to allow for a one finger use. Also, it might be handy to use a center detent for those who use their throttles for forward and reverse, versus just forward only throttle. The adjustability of the detents is a nice feature too. Thanks for showing this to us, and for your thoughts on it. Good to see companies that want feedback before they make their products final.
Would be nice if you could control the "stickiness" of the ball bearings so it could be very "jarring" or a mild click to move over in one direction or the other.
If you can afford a Virpil product, paddle yaws should Not be in your flight setup! Get rudder pedals! Vkb has more affordable pedals than Virpil. Check them out :)
I expect the most common use for this feature would actually be space sim players who have their controls setup such that throttle all the way back is full reverse thrust, throttle all the way forward is full forward thrust, and throttle in its centered position is zero thrust. Having a detente letting you feel when the throttle is centered is very useful as it allows you to reduce or maybe even eliminate the deadzone in between forward and reverse thrust.
@@wjkkwjkf2980 The VKB is based on the F/A 18C hornet stick it works phenomenal in any simulator. it has three sliders on it but if you pair it with a good throttle like this virpil or a warthog you are in for a good time, I would link the product but YT seems to remove my comment when I do. Just google VKB Gladiator.
I see this being useful in ED: you can split the throttle so you put a detent that block the throttle to 25%, and when you pass the detent you go in reverse. Then if you play flight sims, the detent avoid that you cut power to the engines, so you have one set up working for 2 different game scenarios
I got my CM3 a few days ago and I put the detent in at the 50% position to indicate forward/reverse in ED. I like it, but the detent "bump" is very strong and jarring. I can see using it at 75% as usefully too. However, I can also see sliding back and forth over the detent in combat very uncomfortable.
And if as Astro says, Virpil is going to read the comments, read this : CREATE A HIGH QUALITY VERSION OF THE CH-PRO THROTTLE FOR SPACE SIMS! Yes I still use it even though I have access to warthog and VKB/Virpil dual joystick setups(I have a bunch and can choose). For space sims it is the #1 best throttle on the market for 2 reasons : 1, the analogue for thrusters is right under the THUMB for maximum control, and 2 the SLIDING mechanism rather than the arcing. Perfect would be a mode where the throttle is centered like joystick so it can be used for fa off flying, this would be the ideal for me as high quality space sim throttle goes. Wish list : CH Pro inspired throttle with - Thruster analogue axis under THUMB, Sliding mechanism with option to center it and put springs so it acts like a left-hand joystick for fa off flying, even if there was something super clever that it could change mode from linear to centered with the touch of a button(fantasy now) so I can switch between supercruise and normal space fa off. Anyway that is my wish.
My first HOTAS was the Thrustmaster Hotas X. I loved being able to just pull back behind the notch with the throttle to go into reverse, easily it's best feature. If I could have a notch on my Virpil CM2 I'd be very happy. But it's not enough to pay the high price of a CM3 just 6 months after getting the CM2 (while it was pretty new). I really wish Virpil made a mod kit. Personally I don't need the levers, that's propably more for jet-fighter simmers, so a smaller mod would be great for Elite. Might try one of the 3D-print mods in the future, or design my own.
One of the better reviews I've come across. Incidentally I've got about 4000+ hours flying in ED though I've shifted focus more over to MFS 2020 lately. o7
I'm currently using a hybrid HOTAS - the stick of the X52 (Awesome) and the throttle from the TM16000M again AWESOME. I'm a fan of the slide rail rather than the rotation throttles. There seems to be far too much on the throttle that will be getting in the way especially the 2x2 layout of the direction sticks. Although I don't use them, having the paddles is a nice option and if I don't know where 50% or 75% is on the throttle I'm not put it in the right place. I know it's a preview but it seems to be trying too hard. Do the toggles, dials and switches get in the way while you're playing as you have to keep your arm off them or risk premature system activation? I'll be looking forward to the full review especially as a compare and contrast.
I’ve watched a few reviews of this throttle and I’ve heard a few reviewers say that the controls on the front side of the throttle tend to be in the way and you have to be careful not to hit anything while throttling back.
You have to decide what option is more useful for you: 50% detent is great for full range (forward/backward) but you lose range of sensibility. In the other hand, 75% detent is also very useful, and you can set a button for direction change (forward/backward) having the whole range of sensibility for every direction.
I am curious, why would you want a 50% detent on your throttle for ED rather than using the full range of the throttle and having a reverser button (which is the approach I prefer by far personally). The latter is objectively better (ie more usable throttle range and faster transitions between forward and backward thrust) so I am wondering what makes you want the middle detent, 50 is forward approach.
I like it and agree with the need for a one peice pull, if they don't make one i'm sure I could bodge something together to do the trick. I know what i'm saving for when my X55 stops working but i'm guessing it'll cost me a lot more.
I had to remove the middle detent in the Saitek X52Pro because it was broken; I miss it because I like my throttle to do both forward and backward trust. My CM3 will have if possible 3 soft detents, one in the middle being mandatory, but optionaly I would like also the ideal forward and ideal backward, because for the moment I do them with buttons, I fear that the Virpil will be so granular that fixing a thrust value with a button binding might not stick, and just breathing in front of the throttle might make the throttle move. Can't wait those wonderful devices by Virpil, I have my Monstertech mounts with the proper plates waiting, with the Saitek doing an honorable job for the moment (the twist is not working properly). Monstertech mounts are absolutely awesome and transform the feeling of the games, much more ergonomic!.
I feel like a doof but when I saw this was a video from January I was like "how can a video from the start of the year be coming out now!?" so I guess its a new year now huh?
Honestly getting a hard detent where the zero throttle is a great feature to have over setting your throttle to “forward only” in ED. Now you know where your zero is and throttle control can go full spectrum without the guess work. Then setting a hard stop at the 75% throttle will most likely be my overall configuration... That is when my rig gets off “back order” status... 🙄
I'd set it up so that the last 10 or 20 percent of the throttle requires those levers to access, this giving me a range of the throttle that acts as thrust reverse.
I'm trying to set my stops to %50 throttle position, zero thrust and 70% best maneuverability for use in VR. I know the 70% is ship dependent. Take a look at VPC Software Setup [20210102]. "Hardware keyboard mapping" is supposed allow Elite to use more than 32 buttons by mapping key strokes to button presses on the virpil throttles.
having a 50% possition would allow you to have 50% be 0 thrust, and then be able to go forwards and backwards, and use the analoge stick for up/down and left/right thrust to straafe. (had similar set up on T160000M/ with throtole in ED. WOrks well in combat when you sometimes want to flip around and fly back or sideways to keep your target on your sights. This woudl have replace my dual stick setup (would have been cheaper than two grips, two bases.... Maybe).
personally, I think there are way to many buttons on it. I had to remap my boost because it was right next to the targeting on the throttle. I would target the limpet in an asteroid field, and accidently hit the boost. As nuke would say, it did not go well. For the VR folks maybe all those buttons on the throttle are ok, but, I think, 2 on the back side of the handle, 2 on the thumb side, and move the rest back on the base. I would use the cam followers to center, between forward, and reverse, I like to feel where reverse comes on.
i would most probably use my 3d printer to make it so that the "bump" is only on main lever hook or only on the secondary lever( so as to have separate rail for right and left lever)
For Elite Dangerous, it would be best to have an additional DUAL or even TRIPPLE cosmo detent, whith the center position and the 75% mark. For Flight Sims like DCS this is really nice, but Virpils Software limits the Axis to Button mappings to only 4, so on the A-10 f.e. once I use the 4 buttons for the idle detent, I cannot run the AirBrake on the slider anymore :-( Hopefully they fix the software soon...
@@deemas6585 oh that airbus isn't too bad looking. I'm not gonna hold my breath on left handed VR support though, but that would make this game perfect.

Is there any way in ED to say have the bottom 20% of the throttle range for Reverse and the remaining 80% for Forward (instead of 50/50 or Forward only)?
Nice preview ! How do you manage your Virpil hardware with Elite Dangerous ? I hurt the wall of the 32 buttons limit that the game can manage per device (Is ED the last game with this limit ? :) )
Since Virpil changed how they do ordering I have not bought anything. Dont fancy being put in a Q for a year. Before early dog caught cat and I was the early dog, bought 2 joysticks from Virpil. Made sure I was there on time, and ordered as fast as I could. I think it is fairer as those who really want it will get out of bed and make sure they are there to order. Dont like being on a Q.
@Andre Wont matter. Looks like VKB will be releasing their new throttle with the sliding mechanism same as CH Throttle but with high quality build sometime this year. Def gonna wait for that, looking forward to it.
recently received my CM2. I considering getting the CM3 using it only for DCS and flight sim but I did not qualify for the 10% discount and paying ca €400 just for the throttle seems very excessive! The price is too high in my opinion they could have adapted the throttle in other ways as well. Like since the virtual device split was removed they could have resized the mode dial and maybe only have 3 modes and instead another row of push buttons or something else. In my opinion virpil should consider a cheaper throttle as well!
I agree! I'm looking at about $1200 for a HOTAS setup through Virpil, which I find extremely hard to justify. Guess I'll just wait for the Thrustmaster Warthog to get back in stock this Feb.
@@beepy9666 Why is your setup so expensive? Mine was ca 840 Euros so 900 USD (?) Reagrdless, unless you need the combat style thing I wouldn't buy it and go for the T1600 or Airbus edition. Far better priced, especially considering the value.

A button to automatically set throttle to 75%. When you move the throttle again after that it resets to the throttle position so you need to be careful.
I myself have a button on the x52 stick T3 and T4 for 75% and 100% - when I need to adjust it, I just move the throttle to where I want it to be - it's normally set to full speed then I hit T4 for 75% as the 6 second mark on approach - if I'm interdicted the throttle will push to full speed giving me time to spin around defeating the interdiction attempt. It works well and I can hold a beer in my left hand while moving around on the stick in my right.
The thing you attach goes in the middle track, affecting both sides' ball bearings. You'd have to somehow make a half width attachment and I don't think you'd be able to attach it with the screw.
Sadly, I’ve spent over $1200 at Virpil. None of it works and still waiting over a year for parts. It’s awesome while it works. I’ve given up and bought VKB. I couldn’t be happier.
How is it not working, I've had lots of Virpil gear, all of it works absolutely fine, minor issues have been dealt with rapidly by their excellent customer service team.

Hello, is it allowed to ask a bit personal question? It's about your eyes and if you are able to play VR-games or watch 3D-movies. Thank you.
Is there any way in ED to say have the bottom 20% of the throttle range for Reverse and the remaining 80% for Forward (instead of 50/50 or Forward only)?
it looks like the finger-lifts would interfere with the control panel #1 when pushed fully forward, How do we get around this conflict?
Nice preview ! How do you manage your Virpil hardware with Elite Dangerous ? I hurt the wall of the 32 buttons limit that the game can manage per device (Is ED the last game with this limit ? :) )
is there anyway to adjust the stiffness of the throttle arms? to increase and reduce resistance like you can on the warthog?
Looks clunky to me. I see a problem with depressing ALL of the switches on the back side of the throttle as you attempt to engage the levers.
Mine was ca 840 Euros so 900 USD (?)
Reagrdless, unless you need the combat style thing I wouldn't buy it and go for the T1600 or Airbus edition. Far better priced, especially considering the value.
@@jakobeng1303 The initial price was for the Constellation Alpha, Warbird base and Mongoos T-50 throttle. I just checked it again and it comes to $711.86 Euros or $864 USD. However, everything is out of stock now, so, since I don't know what their turn-around time is for backorders, I'm back to the TM Warthog as an option.
@@beepy9666 €834.67 that's what I paid, that included €144 VAT on top of the €690 base price.
It takes 8 weeks, expect payment ca during the 5. and shipment at the end of the 6. or beginning of the 7. that's pretty guaranteed!
@@jakobeng1303 thanks for the heads up!
How are you normally handling the 75 % mark when playing elite?
Do you just need to have a feeling for it? Or how do you know?
I keep an eye on the screen. But yeah, those notches would be great, no need to look down.
God I’m such a noob - I thought it was a new ship
When it's locked can't you just use one detent rather than binding the two of them with a single pad?
The thing you attach goes in the middle track, affecting both sides' ball bearings. You'd have to somehow make a half width attachment and I don't think you'd be able to attach it with the screw.
Sadly, I’ve spent over $1200 at Virpil. None of it works and still waiting over a year for parts. It’s awesome while it works. I’ve given up and bought VKB. I couldn’t be happier.
How is it not working, I've had lots of Virpil gear, all of it works absolutely fine, minor issues have been dealt with rapidly by their excellent customer service team.
@@deemas6585 MongoosT-50CM2 Grip trigger broke; used it while broken. Waited 6+ months for a reply after emails and forum posts. After contact, nothing happened. Decided to buy the new Constellation ALPHA (without old grip fix). Received it, was dead on arrival. So either the brand new grip was broken or the WarBird base broke. Either way, at this point it was almost a year with nothing. I was over it. I have no regrets. I had an issue and VKB sent me the part first, then asked me to send the broken part back.
@@scottmcfarland9965 remarkable that you would buy a second very expensive stick after the apparently shocking experience with the first purchase...
@@deemas6585 both VKB and Virpil have had limited availability over the last few years. You are correct, it was a calculated risk that backfired. At the time, I had been waiting for the VKB Gunfighter 3, but there was no ETA, so I grew impatient. Will not happen again. I had hoped my previous issues were anomalies. Again, when it was working, it was fantastic and going back to the Warthog was not desirable.
very nice throttle - pitty there are no options for southpaws
On a throttle that is split lime this does anyone set thrusters to on and throttle to the other? I think that could be useful.
Along those lines having the ability to have different dentents or stops for each throttle L/R would be nice
👍
my mad caz flight5 is enough for me.
this one got too many buttons
Xbox players over here like... "So. Many. Buttons"
those intents keep failing from what I've heard. I think at least they are replacable
@Andre I heard they removed it entirely
@Andre Thanks for the clarification, Andre :)
Out of budget for me so I can’t give you an informed opinion... unless you ask the company to send one to me for testing purposes 😜
Good HOTAS Bad Hair xd
