The axolotl has been called a “conservation paradox” - a creature that is ubiquitous in pet stores, science labs and pop culture… yet almost extinct in the wild.
The axolotl is an amphibian with incredible regenerative abilities. It lives in only one place outside captivity: the waters of Lake Xochimilco, in Mexico City. Now, a team of scientists is working to secure its future by looking to its past. Working with local farmers, they’re reconstructing a system of chinampas, or island gardens, pioneered by the Aztecs - to restore the axolotl’s habitat. A few hours’ drive to the west, another team is working to save a closely related salamander species by teaming up with Dominican nuns who have raised the creatures in captivity for well over a century. The unusual alliances show that saving species can be as much about culture and heritage as it is about science.

The wonderful thing about projects like this is the long term value for all the wildlife in these waters and the humans who also live near, enjoy and work on those waters.
this gives me hope. i am optimistic that some time in the distant future we can look back and remember when the axolotl's wild population were in the mere double digits per sqkm, rather than the thousands, post-restoration.
People like Claudia are the only chance the earth has to remain a viable habitat for all. The earth is my mother, she is my nourishment and my shelter. Treat her with reverence.
The most powerful act to create and preserve viable habitats is by eliminating dead animal products.
The loss of wild areas to animal agriculture is the leading cause of the current mass extinction of vital native. wildlife.
Considered the most comprehensive analysis between farming and the environment, without meat and dairy consumption, global farm land use could be reduced by 75%. An area equivalent to the U.S., China, EU, and Australia combined---and still feed the world.

A win-win for all.
Excellent video ! Thanks to the scientists, the Nuns and to everyone else involved in this effort to bring back these two salamander species.
*Absolutely! This excellent video highlights the collaborative efforts of scientists, conservationists, and all involved in the mission to revive these two salamander species.*
Did I mention that I love everything about this series? I'm learning new things, hearing new voices, and seeing new stories.
I'm a simple human, I see an axolotl on the thumbnail. I click
Let's be more simple by eating the source of all essential nutrients from plants and fungi. Thereby, showing respect toward fellow animals.
Cried tears of wonder, joy, & gratitude from the intro to the end 🙏
Carlos es muy guapo 🤩
Great docu, I love the writing and narration in this series. Note: you could have mentioned the probable effect of Minecraft and its axolotls, if nothing else then for the extra clicks it would have gotten you thanks to the algorithms... In fact, you should try adding "Minecraft" to the video's tags or whatever anyway, can only help!
Wonderful documentary! A unique collaboration to save a rare species; and message of hope to reverse at least some of the alarming extinction of multipe animals species, blamed on human encroachment and climate change.
Over 30 years ago I had 2 of these little guys as pets. ❤
How long did they live?
😲 What a wonderful story of how these extraordinary and fascinating creatures are returning to the wild.Such a powerful example for others to follow as they work so hard to protect our environment and the lives of the creatures around us 💐👏!
Let's do our part by eliminating dead animal products.
Love this series!
My homeland is full of diverse nature. If not for mexico and the americas no tomatoes in the world or corn. We must protect out natural resources ABOVE ALL
Absolutely. The best way to protect is by going vegan.
Animal products are a class 1 carcinogen. Eliminating dead animal products is a win-win for all.
Yes, México is a true wonderland of nature… I live twenty minutes away in San Diego! But I have been many times! It’s even more special because México is part of the top most-biodiverse countries in the world, including total species of plants, fungi & all animals-Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Venezuela, México, USA, Australia, Papúa New Guinea, Indonesia, Philippines, China, India, Malaysia, South Africa, Madagascar & Democratic Republic of the Congo. 👍🏽
Great work
What beautiful rewilding story wow, blown away.❤
Awesome this is
Let's create awesomeness by going vegan.
There is no greater destruction to life than our needless exploitation of fellow animals.
Gives me hope to see wildlife habits restored.
Well done!
This nun speak like my grand ma i love her !
Great video👍👍
if I'm correct, axolotls never really had natural predators thus the introduction of invasive species resulting in devastating population loss. the lack of any natural defenses means they are free game for any predator. it's insidious
*Absolutely! Salamanders are indeed fascinating creatures often associated with myth and legend. Their unique characteristics and mysterious nature make them truly captivating*
I wish I had a title like salamander of the gods
Let's try to eliminate dead animal products.
Disease ridden animal agriculture is the most destructive industry to all native biodiversity.
Let's eat the source of all essential nutrients from plants and fungi and show respect toward fellow animals.
- What is the difference between axolotl && achoque? I don't see any difference. I'm confused.
Google it
¿Cual es la diferencia entre un lobo y un coyote? Mismo género, diferentes especies....
100 left in the lake and near extinct.
**wanna buy a bottle of them for a cough? I blessed it.. This book in my hand says;- take it all. Don't worry about it. I'll fix it later. -god
They don't actually kill the achoces for the cough syrup lol they literally take a bit of slime coat for it which doesn't hurt it at all and it regenerates anyway, thus an endless supply of respiratory medicine so yeah they're keeping them from becoming extinct while also helping kids with respiratory problems...Those nuns deserve mad respect
👍🏻👍🏻
“Specimens from Mexican lake were sent alive to France by order of Marshal Forey, Bazaine's successor as commander-in-chief of the French expeditionary force to Mexico, and arrived at the Paris Jardin d'Acclimatation in 1863. Some which were passed on to the Jardin des Plantes bred there soon after, and the innumerable axolotls kept in aquariums all over Europe are believed to be their descendants. The first examples to reach this country were exhibited in the London Zoological Gardens in 1864. The normal axolotl is a dark grey or black creature. But white axolotls, albinos of a creamy white or pale flesh colour, with eyes and gills of a beautiful red, are often seen in aquariums. They are said to be all descendants of an albino male which appeared as a freak among a normal brood in Paris in 1866, and which, paired with normal females in 1867 and 1868, gave life to numerous white offspring which by selection have become fixed as a permanent race without, according to Professor Vaillant, “

Austria need to return the crown of our great Tlatoani Moctezuma to Mexico so we can feel complete once more, cortez k i l l e d Moctezuma after torching him and burn his feet to get the locations of the Aztecs treasures, but austria is refusing to return the penacho to their people even when they know it’s belongs to the Aztecs, the crown of Moctezuma should be in the rightful place, I mention this because the axolote is Moctezuma twin brother.
Wonderful video …
I have a request. When you use subtitles, rather than a voice translation, I read them and miss any activities that are going on. It's very frustrating. Could you use voice, instead?
Jajaja, gringos are sooo lazy, you must learn to be multi task, stop complaining.
Reptile fish, diving birds, types of unknown species, speciation the product of sexual selection (abundance
Im not feeling the voice over person.
Omg speak English!! I would read a book if i wanted to work that hard.
Stop crying, lazy gringo.
If one eats dead animal products, don't you dare call yourself a conservationist. (Former rancher, Howard Lyman)
So people who literally save species shouldn’t be conservationists, because they eat meat?(I know the effects of eating meat has on the world, it just seems a little wrong to single out people who are literally saving species, instead of focusing on the meat companies)
Again I’m not saying we shouldn’t support non meat alternatives, it just feels wrong to single out people who are literally saving species.
@ToughieTheRabbsFringeLimbedTre Animal agriculture is the most ecologically destructive to all native biodiversity.
Does it make sense to participate in the most threatening act towards the species one is attempting to conserve?
All while, animal products are a class 1 carcinogen for humans.
@ToughieTheRabbsFringeLimbedTre The documentary stated anthropogenic climate change is the greatest threat. Disease ridden animal agriculture creates more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire world's transportation sector combined. (WHO, 2006)
To make matters worse, the loss of wild areas to animal agriculture is the leading cause of the current mass extinction of vital native. wildlife.
Considered the most comprehensive analysis between farming and the environment, without meat and dairy consumption, global farm land use could be reduced by 75%. An area equivalent to the U.S., China, EU, and Australia combined---and still feed the world.

@@monicasong427 I’m saying we shouldn’t call conservationists(a relatively small group of people in the whole grand scheme of things) not conservationists just because they eat meat, they are literally helping save species
extinct in the wild, is not extinct.
