      Mr & Mrs Beaver are characters from CS Lewis' children's novel 'Narnia Chronicles' - 'The Lion, Witch & The Wardrobe' in particular. The beavers have built a damn on a river, on the edge of the wood not far from Cair Paravel (the White Witch's castle House), & have a cosy home there. Mr Beaver is expert at intelligence gathering & counter-surveillance. He is also an excellent trout catcher. Mrs Beaver is proficient in machine sewing & hospitality. Both operate a kind of surveillance post & safety house in opposition to the White Witch's tyrannical rule over Narnia - the land under her enchantment (in which as a result of her evil spell, is always winter but never Christmas). The Beavers chiefly combat Maugrim, the White Witch's Captain of Secret Police, & his network of spies.

    It's like when they put wolves back into Yellowstone National Park. I don't think they expected it, but wolves actually improved the environment for other species simply by controlling the elk & reducing elk impacts on vegetation.

      Its much safer to reintroduce predators ecologically speaking because they are at the top of the food chain and always lower in number. Lower numbers to monitor, lower impact on and higher adaptability to environments, and a much longer gestation from prey animals means their numbers and impacts can be monitored, understood more easily, and typically self regulate. When predators outpace prey, some move out, some die off, then prey has a boom generation and the cycle repeats without more human involvement.

    • @MrLoobu
      @MrLoobu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Ironic because humans killed all the predators in most places preemptively due to understanding their personal danger rather than their ecological importance. Responsibly infrequent killing (for food) is as important a part of conservation as anything, in a real ecosystem.

      Sadly not the case everywhere. Because the schools have been closed lots of parents have been taking the kids to our natural beauty spot for days out, great not a problem I can even put up with the higher noise level due to screaming children what I cannot put up with is when these families go home the amount of litter that is left behind, it's desgraceful. I work year around in those areas and there's normally no litter at all. It's not hard if you bring it with you, take it away with you.

    As being from the mountains of Southern West Virginia and places where there are thousands of beaver, I can tell you right now they do not stop flooding. They make it much much much much worse. The problem with beaver dams as they aren't strong enough to hold if there's a big rainfall for days at a time. It will hold while it's raining, but because of the run off of water the day after it rains, the quick rise in water oh, and also if it keeps raining it makes it even worse... But the quick rise in the water and considering that the beaver dam is nothing more than wood and mud in some places, the dam cannot hold the massive amounts of water. What happens is a certain part of the dam will break and as soon as the beaver realizes that this is happening they will start removing pieces of the dam and replacing them trying to strengthen the damn. But it never ever works. I have seen entire towns here in southern West Virginia like in Mercer County and McDowell County wiped out and hundreds and hundreds of people lose their homes and businesses because of these beaver. That is why people in mountainous areas such as West Virginia Tennessee Western North Carolina Kentucky Pennsylvania in Arkansas trap beaver and sell them for their beaver pelts. Beaver are beautiful and they do a good job of being a conservationist to land, however, if they live in a mountainous region they destroy people's houses because the amount of water that runs off of those mountains after a big rain fall, the wooden damn cannot hold the water.

      It's the Eurasion Beaver. Stock was brought over from Eastern Europe where they are making a very good resurgence. Finland reintroduced the beaver in 1937 but chose to go with the North American Beaver, not realising that the Eurasion and American are two distinct species that don't interbreed. There was plenty of Eurasion stock for the UK reintroduction, so we have our original Eurasion species back.

      @@saycat6758 thank you for the offer but it won‘t be necessary. They are reproducing and expanding their territories quite nicely. According to data from 2017-2019, from the 12 provinces 11 now have resident beavers and the last province was expected to get them within 5 years. Otters are in a similar situation. Reintroduced in 2002 and now resident in half of the provinces and still expanding their territories. Wolves are a different matter. They first returned on their own about 5 years ago and are slowly settling in right now. It looks promising. Bears and elks (called moose in North America) are a whole different story. We have none in the wild and it‘s not likely we will. This country is probably too densely populated for them to have a suitably large enough habitat. But you never know because that‘s what we thought about wolves too and they found their way back.

      @Miss Moneypenny Apparently you do, or else you'd have sensed it wasn't an offensive comment.
      Talking to spammers is pointless since they don't care, all they care about is spreading their shit around, so the way you deal with them isn't by telling them "shoo shoo, go away" as they don't give a f***, on the contrary : giving them attention is exactly what they want.
      You report them and then ignore them, that's the best way to deal with them.

    I am a botanist in California and there's nothing I want more than the restoration of this animal here. Stop wildfires by creating fire breaks. Slow down water and increase the water table, also allowing algae to cling to rocks and establish a baseline for biodiversity. Restore our wetlands. There were millions of them here, and now they number in the low hundreds. Bring back nature's geoengineers and we can restore the damage we've caused.

      Nature is pretty but its also brutal. Many animals kill each other for food.

    • @koo6669
      @koo6669 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tubester4567 No it's not brutal it's a law of nature carnivores must kill other animals for food otherwise many carnivore animals will extinct and if only herbivores are present they will eat all the green so there will be no plants and trees could you imagine a life without trees? we Humans ourselves cannot survive because there will be no plants to intake our carbon dioxide and give back oxygen.
      So it may sound cruel but plants are also living beings right but herbivores eat them? So if a living being needs to survive it's necessary to kill other that's how nature is balanced💜

    In 1953 the beaver population in Yellowstone was very small with only 8 colonies, a result of over hunting in the 1800’s and declining riverside habitat (too much grazing from the huge herds of grazers because of no wolves). 130 beavers were introduced in the 90’s and the population has grown to over 100 colonies. Wolf reintroduction is believed to have played an important role in their comeback.

      Why?
      Did the Platypus do something to you???
      It seems a lot of wildlife in Oz is out to kill (Saltie's, snakes, spiders....) But the Platypus seems like an iconic small timid creature with poisoned spurs.
      They appear to have more in common with the North American muskrat than beavers (body size, not building dams)
