Thank you Tom and PBS. I have been following from afar for 5 years. I have never seen her in person. Tom, I can see the love you have for her, this show brought tears to my eyes.
Thank you so much for such an amazing bit of information regarding bear 399. I can see why she is such an enigma. I absolutely loved this story, and hope that bears and man will come to a greater understanding. It's imperative. Thank you again.
Here in western Canada we have a famous grizzly named ' The Boss'. A full grown adult male and bigger then the usual. His range is all 3 national parks, Banff,Jasper and YoHo. That is about the size of Oregon. When he is spotted several pro photographers go out and get great pics. This is because you can get within 100 yards of him. he seems to ignore humans and pretty much everything else around him. Nobody has tested that distance however. .Ate a couple black bears and killed another grizzly last year. There is a second slightly smaller grizzly bear called 'Split Lip'. The Boss and Split Lip have been trying to kill each other for several years. The Boss has won the fights and Split Lip will fight but Split Lip can out run him so Split Lip usually runs off when he tires out. The Boss just overwhelms everything with huge power and weight. There are several videos of them here on YT and two of the fights they had.
@@FreeRoamingPhoto both are usually seen along the highways and open areas in the spring eating dandelions and fresh grasses, moose calves and black bears. they move to the higher mountain side elevations as the summer progresses. where they eat mountain goat and sheep, marmots, any meat a grizzly can catch.
great job on the video nice pictures informative good idea passing along the Knoll age that "a fed bear is a dead bear" hope people will follow the rules so these beautiful animals can continue to live freely in their natural habitat.
I understand the reason for this not being published, if it is even available.. However, it would be really cool for professional and credentialed (fk getty, etc) photographers. naturalists to be able to see what bears are up to, and affectively (hopefully) get some great shots without almost lucking into them.. Great work... Gonna follow now! I know my glass and bodies pretty well, but I don't live in the area, and even if I did, or visited often, I'd definitely contact you for your insight and advice.. Just because you might have the wand and equipment doesn't mean you know how to use it everywhere! ;). Thanks for the video and I will definitely keep you in mind next time I am up your way.. (My YT account has nothing to do with my actual business.. )
National parks don't interfere with nature. Planting food and altering the landscape would go against the whole mission of national parks. In terms of wildlife, they use many encounters, such as with 399, to educate the public on how to coexist with all forms of wildlife.
My husband & I drove from Ga on 6/4/24 arriving 6/6/24 the Parks & on one glorious day, 6/12/24, we got to see Bear #399 & Spirit down at Colter Bay in a meadow. Spirit is a BIG BOY! It is going to be interesting to see how big he will get!! We were able to watch them for over 45 min along with numerous others in a wonderful Bear Jam! It was the highlight of our trip & the highlight of many other trips! Just Imagine now here I am now at 70 yrs old & I’m so thrilled that I I have seen some such an iconic living creature in those incredibly beautiful mountains! Both such wonderful gifts from God! IFYKYN!!! Right? I’m shocked at those that don’t! 😳🐻❤ Thank you for your wonderful video!!
I saw her this year with one cub at a safe distance of 250 yards. I believe she made history once again as the oldest grizzly bear to have reproduced. She has a big following of wildlife poperotsies.
That's a really great question! There's a few ways. First is that she frequents certain areas along roadsides, particularly in certain times of the year. When she does, she usually has her cub(s) in tow, so people assume from that that it's her. When she doesn't have cubs with her, she tends to disappear into the wilderness. More specifically though, she's occasionally "tagged" by the Grizzly Bear Interagency Committee for research (as are many other bears in the area), at which point, she'll be given ear tags for identification. If those are present, those are a pretty good indicator as well. However those usually only last about a year or two. Lastly she has features specific to her. In addition to a dark brown coat, she also has a small scar on the left side of her snout from a fight many years ago. All those, combined with her patterns and behavior are what conclude people who follow her around regularly to safely conclude that it's her and not another random bear. Once you've seen multiple grizzlies regularly, you can begin to distinguish one from another through physical features and behavior.
Not necessarily. She successfully navigated them for decades. She was hit late at night well outside of her normal range where the speed limit, even at night, is 55 mph. These types of situations are common problems for grizzlies, which is why the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is considered an island for them.
There was a mountain lion of similar fame, P-22, who lived in the LA area but died at the end of 2022. Very Best Regards, Tom Scott Author ● Speaker ● World's Leading Expert on the Corrupt U.S. Legal System _Our American Injustice System_ _Stack the Legal Odds in Your Favor_

Beautiful. And what an ending. And now with her death she will inspire to Make over and under passes and wild life corridors. What a spirit.
I truly hope so! She was definitely a remarkable animal.
June 2024: 399 has emerged & she’s got one cub, not a baby, lol he’s almost as big as momma! Long Live the Queen!!!
Long life 399. ❤

Thanks for the great video! Is there an online community that updates sighting of her? We are going in June and would love to be able to see her.

Why do they not get a strain side the park and plant the food the bears like to keep these bears safe
National parks don't interfere with nature. Planting food and altering the landscape would go against the whole mission of national parks. In terms of wildlife, they use many encounters, such as with 399, to educate the public on how to coexist with all forms of wildlife.
Has anyone seen her this year?
She has been out this year, but only briefly.
I guess humans & bears have something in common after all. Your chances of multiples rises as you age.
There's a lot more in common as well!
She's had three sets of triplets before. I think it's just her.

Sadly the grizzly has died. Rest in peace.
I think she just passed away
She did. She was tragically hit by a car last night.
We’re all here because she emerged to massive tik tok fame this week.
This week? She's been massively famous for years! Glad to hear it finally spread to tiktok though.
So sad. She was killed by a collision with a vehicle. SO SAD.
Terribly tragic.

@FreeRoamingPhoto not disagreeing with you but yeah humans are everywhere anymore. I'm surprised she was so far down from her normal territory.
It was definitely a surprise to hear of her down there. I think one of the big lessons to learn from her is better coexistence.
