My father's father(my Grand-father)Stoker Harry Parsons went down on HMS Repulse...never forgotten. I'm a songwriter and wrote the following words for my father and for Harry. This verse is the hardest i ever will write, For if i do justice,i've half-won the fight, For my father has given the whole of his life, In such equal measure 'tween his father and wife. For Harry was young,so young to be taken, And with love for his son,if i'm not much mistaken, Although time is a healer,i must question that, My father'd trade places to be where he's sat. As time's gone on by,it's something i've seen, As my father has never let go of the dream, Respect to him always,as his life was snatched, As well as was Harry's,and forever attached. Harry gave all he could for his family and wife, And much was the shame,he had such a short life, Tall straight and handsome,a beautiful sight, Would that seaman have been,as he sailed through the night. And yet on the day he was taken away, A young lad on the shore awaited his stay, So innocent,small and so charming a boy, Would,never again, hear those words,"SHIP AHOY!". He's the son of a hero,my hero to me, Across oceans one day,my father's soul shall be, For his family all love him and his father as well, Four generations on,with such stories to tell. Take my father to Java,that's where Harry's lain, And in someway maybe,take away all his pain, He'll have some idea of where Harry went down, Allowing all to raise glasses in "Old Plympton Town". This thing we call war, took my father away, Well,stole his mind from us to other days, He's often been distant,through no fault of his own, And dream't i am sure of his father's trip home. My wife's great grandfather is still there. His name is J. J Ashton. I'm an ex member of the Royal Navy, was a ships diver in my time, I find it totally disgusting that a war grave can so easily be accessed by aresholes.
Th real problem is the illegal salvage of these wrecks in SE Asia not a diver wit a camera. The props had already been removed when this was shot and a lot more has been taken of this and the other wrecks in the area since, some are totally disappearing.
Good luck convincing the Asians to leave the wrecks alone. They starved our boys to death in POW camps 75 years ago so they're more than happy to plunder the ships
Let's be honest: if there's money to be made, the Chinese will do it. Unless the RN permanently stations a warship above what remains of the wrecks, they'll be completely gone in a few years.
Its such a shame when you have to mute it, You would think after making such an interesting documentary, that they would have some decent musical accompaniment. To compliment the video.

It is very probable your grandfather and my Uncle, James O'Grady (my namesake) were comrades in arms as he was also a stoker.. Being born after the war I never had chance to meet him. May they and their other comrades always rest in peace and I'm for ever grateful for the freedoms they gave me the chance to enjoy throughout my life

Hi Ron. My Grandad Frederick 'Bewan' Eynon same as your uncle also at some point was transferred being one of the lucky ones. He was a ships cook & also served on HMS Queen Elizabeth during conflict. Slim chance but maybe they knew just each other?.

okay, done some light digging, looks as though from various articles and pictures, as well as from motion pictures from late 1941 (the year she was sunk) none of which depict her with the aforementioned red ensign, thus i would strongly agree with the thesis that it was placed after the sinking by divers or local, potentially by people whom served or were related to crew. However there unfortunately doesn't seem to be anything produced that correlates to this issue directly.

The captain and the crews were great seamen. Just imagine the ship dodged 19 torpedoes and was hit with 4 before sunk. That took great seamanship.

Remember there is one then one type of red ensign. That said that one does look like a plain red ensign.
