Once again a good video. You saved me alot of money from buying spares that are working correctly and incompetant mechanics....

Thanks Gary, nice work you do to keep your customers vehicles in tip top condition.
Nice to know how it should be done
That's game the customer comes 1st.
Thank you Gary. This helps me a lot. I just got mine overheated last night while travelling 300km. Will exactly do as your video.
Thanks for supporting my channel, Ahmad, all the best with treating your cooling system.
I did a trip with polo like this from southern suburbs to ceres. It was raining very hard and I was driving quite fast the whole way. 120-160. As I got into ceres I got a dash warning with beep that coolant level low. Stopped car and I see coolant was halfway empty on the bottom part of bottle. Stopped at garage and topped up with water.
First time something like this happened. But I been checking everyday now and coolant level is fine…thoughts?
@@luqies I had same situation with my 1.4l gasoline Polo. The main reason was air intake preheater pipe which was cracked. Thus it's made of plastic and needs attention.
I sorted it out. It was the heater core that was leaking. No leaks now all good
This was super helpful, I have to replace the thermostat housing. Any advice should I flush firsts then replace?
Thanks Gary, just a question if I'm done with the flush how do I bleed the system
Hi, Adiel refer to the time stamp at 14:12 on the video, one has to remove the temp. sensor and make sure no air, but water only flows out, then put the sensor back and secure it with the clip, also make sure you put the sealing o ring back on the sensor before putting it back, finally check it is not leaking. I hope that helps you, and thanks for your support it is greatly appreciated.
GARY
Good work as always. The video looks very good with the natural lighting
Yes thanks for that observation Nathaneal, I wish I can shoot all my videos outside, thanks for your continued support.
Thanks
I have completed all the steps! Very helpful video. I just added anti freeze. Is it fine with just anti freeze or should you dilute it with water? I used the same anti freeze as you.
But now I am stressing. How would I know if I have done everything right? I replaced the water bottle also but I see the one goldwaget gave me looks the same but its different inside. I have done about 50kms so far with the car and hasnt overheated?
@@no_proxxiv4163No need to dilute antifreeze with water. You’re better off running on antifreeze only.
Thank you for the lesson, Gary.
I have a vw polo 1.4. CLP engine. The fan does not swing once the temperature switch sensor is plugged in. But it runs perfectly once the switch is unplugged. Unfortunately, for now, the fan stopped working completely. I tried taking it to mechanics, but they are failing to fix it.
Please advise.
The switch that activates the fan needs replacing (the one you unplug to get the fan to work)
@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 Thank you, I will try to replace it.
@@masuleleon5283 I think it will solve your issue
Can I leave the radiator flush overnight?
I got polo vivo 2013 . Last week Sunday, i filled the water coolant up to Max, then i drove for a week to work and come back home, then the water went low, the engine is fine and oil is fine no mix with oil and water. Nothing leaking on the engine. What can be a problem when the water gets low ?
Does the radiator have a drain plug? I need to do it on my Polo Vivo 2014 but I have office hands🤦🏻
No, it does not, you have to loosen the lower radiator hose.
Thanx alot gary am definitely doing that tomorrow all by myself 👍🏾😊
Great Stuff, all the best man.
Hi There, very informative video. Quick question were is the thermostat on the 2010 polo 1.6 TDI is it also just on the right hand side of the engine block?
It is housed in the water flange, not quite sure about which side on the TDI but the petrol versions are in the flange behind the cylinder head, just trace where the radiator pipes go it should be into the water flange.
How much coolant is needed after the flushing is done in order to top up? Also can you mix coolant with the water if the coolant is a bit low after topping up?
I recomment at least 2l of long life coolant and yes you can top up with normal water.

Nice job sir 💯. ..can u please tell me what the name is of that 90bent that comes out of the radiator in to pipe there a smaller pipe going in to that 90 bent as well..thank you
Sorry, I do not understand the question.
Hi Gary happy new years to you and your family. Quick question. I'm replacing the polo clp thermostat housing now which has the gasket or o ring so do I still apply sealant or just sandpaper the head where it bolts on?
No sealant, just clean the surface with fine sandpaper.
Okay I've completed everything and topped up coolant but the ABS light is now on. Any ideas why this would happen? Coolant only took 1.5 liters so far so wanted to run it so it can purge and then fill up but the ABS is concerning me. I changed spark plugs too if that's anything to go on
How much would you charge to do this including parts
Hi Gary, thank you so much for the video, new subscriber here. I have a same model, coolant water finishes within a day after driving few kilos, no leakage and overheating light comes on, what could be faulty here? Your response will be much appreciated.
Iit could be the Reservoir Cap's pressure valve opening too soon, common on these, try replacing the Cap and see the results, Tsepiso
Hello there, I’m experiencing the same thing but my anti freeze warning light comes after less than 500 km’s and this has Been happening for the past 3 months

Another interesting video. Thanku Gary.
2 Questions: Can i use the Hepu coolant for a 1.4i Golf Velociti?...and how many liters would i more or less need?
Yes, HEPU is a German brand. Around 3l I assume. Check at Goldwagen.
Hi Gary, great video very clear and concise 😊 I've got a water leak small leak via a crack in the water bottle, can I just replace the water bottle and throw some antifreeze or do I have to flush the system to replace the bottle. Thanks for the video and thank you in advance for further advice
If there is no rust in the system then just replace the water bottle and add anti-freeze, if there is rust in the cooling system a flush would be recommended, thanks for your support it means a lot, Wade.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 hi Gary, there doesn't appear to be any rust in the system. Will replace the bottle and add the antifreeze you've recommended for vws. Thank you again. Will continue to support your great work🙌🏽💯
Thanks Gary very informative... Gary I have a polo player 1.4 comfort line 2011 model and I think my maf sensor is faulty or dirty any advice on cleaning or replacing it ??..
Best to clean with some sensor cleaner 1st, Dorian, if this does not help then it may have to be replaced, diagnostics will help narrow down your options too, thanks for your support by visiting and interacting on my channel, good luck.
Hi Gary do you only run the heater fan after filling the engine up with water before again removing radiator hoses for the final drainage? Also can the flush be done and then oil top up once everything else is topped up?
The heater fan is not important but putting the settings on for the heater is important because we need the coolant to pass through the heater system, and yes the oil can be topped up after.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 thanks Gary I bought a new thermostat housing so should I do the flush using the old one before replacing it? There is a little pin hole in the plastic housing which caused the coolant level to drop to begin with hence I want to replace and flush the coolant components
Yes use the old one for flushing, then replace with the new one before putting in the new anti freeze.
@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 appreciate all the guidance and insights Gary. Strongs to your channel
Thanks all the best to you in 2025 and beyond.
Hi Gary after doing this heater is not making hot and water light is going on any suggestions thanks for the great videos
You must make sure you bleed the system properly as I show in the video.
Seems very good u need to replace the thermostat housing, does this need a gasket and or any gasket maker or silicon?
It is always recommended to use some gasket maker to help seal when replacing a thermostat housing, Vivian
Thanks for this detailed well done video. Where are you based, I need this done to my car...how much would this process cost at a workshop or private mechanic?
Cape Town, approx. R2500
Hey Gary not sure if you got my last comment but I changed spark plugs and the thermostat and did the flush. Coolant only took a little over a litre so wanted to run the engine and purge before completing the top up but I now have the ABS light coming on. Any ideas?
I also topped up break fluid this morning but both the ABS and exclamation mark warning lights still on
ABS light could be due to one of the wheel speed sensors (abs sensors) being faulty or dirty, best to try cleaning it with some brake cleaner 1st.
It could also be the ABS unit itself, it should be tested with diagnostic equipment.
What if It has already overheated, can you still do this to prevent further overheating as ny sisters car has overheated once and hasn't seemed to overheating again?
i have a problem with my polo 1.4 2013. even when the temperature is high the indicator on the dashboard dosn't light up. at the same time i noticed that the electrical outlet in the water bottle is not connected. could please tell me what this outlet is for.
thank you in advance!
It is to indicate low water levels.

Hi Gary i have a Polo 1.4 with a rust and calcium buildup what is the proper way to treat it the fan is not also switching on automatically
You need to flush the cooling system until the build-up is either greatly reduced or eradicated completely.
Thanks Gary, can we use normal tap water for this process OR distilled water is required?
I always use tap water when I am adding antifreeze to the cooling system.
Im good at Polo 1.3Aav engine . How are the quality of these? Its 1.6L with 16 valves rit? Have just been lappin 8 .. they are now sealing again
Gary the manual says you need 40% Coolant and 60% Distilled Water, So I want to find out how many litres do I need to fill up the whole system
I find 2 liters of Vw approved antifreeze to be sufficient
Hi there Gary. Thank you so Much for the video. My Polo Vivo is seems to be not circulating the water in my tank. When I start the car the Water light immediately goes on. The temperature levels don't go beyond 90°C on the reader. I have been advised that it could be the water pump that is the issue. Is there any other possible things I may Check?. Thanks
Hi Thamsanqa, it sounds like the water pump may need replacing, it could also be malfunctioning sensors, like the one in the bottle that warns of low water levels and the temp sender unit that measures the water temp. have these checked 1st.
Could this treatment help solve a problem with the temperature guage fluctuating between 90 and 110 degrees on VW polo vivo 1.4 (2013 model)
No, check the temp. sensor on the engine, it may have to be replaced.
9:59 is the temp sensor this switch that you take out here? @@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790
It's always good ,while at it, to flash the heater core as well...thanks for the video...
Hi Gary I need to bring my car am in Tembisa ...we r you situated?
Hi Gary i am new here just saw your video, please assist, my CLP polo 1.4 2014 model the coolant or cooling system is smelly and as soon as i put aircon on heat the smell is worse and last week dirty water came out on a passanger side. Now after i watched this video it safe to say i need to flush it.
It does sound like a flush is needed, but also if you are losing water it must be assessed as to what is causing the leak, you can sustain serious engine damage by overheating when the system looses too much coolant.

does it have to be pink g12 antifreeze or can i pour green antifreeze
Vw-approved antifreeze does not come in any other colour. You can use another colour but it will not be the correct spec for Vw. so it will be less effective, but it can be used.
Quick one. My heater isn't working😢what could be the cause?😊
Is the blower working or is it just not getting warm?
Do i pour the g12 as is, without mixing with water?, i had mine done today but later noticed the coleent level its below the max line so i'd like to top it up a bit.

Hi Gary, i have a polo vivo. We replaced the water pump, thermostat and fan radiator switch but my fan only comes on for less then 5 seconds. Car is not overheating but i think the fan should stay on longer. Any advice please.
Hi Joshua, if the temp. is at the correct spec then there should be no issue, but some replacement fan radiator switches are known to be troublesome, so it is sometimes better to try another brand.

Diagnostics showed an issue with the fan relay and i changed, then the over heating stopped since last december until this week. What could be the problem according to your knowledge? You must perform a cylinder leakage test to make sure the gasket is not blown or the head, 's water jackets are not corroded and compression leaks into the cooling system.
failing that one of the components you replaced is faulty, some brands are inferior and do not last.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 thanks for the reply. How is the leakage test done sir
It involves special equipment whereby the cylinders are tested 1 at a time, the piston is put at TDC with the valves closed, and the engine must be locked so the piston does not move when compressed air is pumped into the cylinder.
Then compressed air is pumped into the combustion chamber via the spark plug hole, and then the pressure is monitored.
There should be no drop in pressure to ensure the cylinder has no leaks, as I said it is a specialized test.
If the cylinder leaks it can be determined where the leak is, into the cooling system, down to the sump, leaking valves a cylinder head gasket leak, even a crack in the cylinder head can be detected with this test.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 Goodness lord this sounds very much expensive. Any idea of the price?
I charge R800 for such a test and a full report of the findings.

@@moffatk7948 I done it to my vivo using that coolant but mixed 50/50 with battery/distilled water, i change it every 2 years, but I do mine differently not as thorough like this.i will let the car run with tap water and the heater on, then drain it by the little tap underneath the radiator, because I don't allow mine to get as bad
Hi Gary I have the corsa Lite 1.4. After replacing the water pump and doing all the belts etc my water hasn't been circulating right. Almost as if my radiator is clogged. Now there is a lot of dirt/rust in the bottle. Would i need to remove the thermostat to do a flush? I'm kinda stuck sigh
Yes, it will be advisable to flush the engine, but also have the radiator flushed by radiator specialists, 9 times out of ten it is the radiator that blocks 1st as the tubes are very thin in the radiator, so if there are signs of rust, it could cause partial blockage in the radiator.

60/40 or 50/50 water mix. I think Gary forgot to mention that. The water capacity should be around 5l. The antifreeze showed amounted to 3l. The water would have been 2l. Distilled water should only be used.
Thanks for your insights on this matter Matt, much appreciated.
I think if mixing the coolant yourself then distilled water should be used & depending on the climate of a country hot or cold the mix should be varied to cope with the climate ?
I heard that about the climate thing years ago somewhere lol,
But if your just flushing the system through its ok to use the tap water initially as its not staying in the system ,
Ready mix antifreeze uses distilled water anyway so that will counteract any small amount of tap water left in system .
This is not a dig at you Matt or Gary this is just some info for those not in the know coz some of the comments on this vid shows me that some people havnt got the foggest on whats what regarding the coolant system in their motor.
Putting straight neat anti freeze without water into system is not a good thing to do & putting anti freeze in system with regular tap water will eventually corrode parts & limescale up which again is not good & will become costly in the end so its best to do this job properly & to the letter of the manufactures specifications & dont attempt it if you are a complete novice .
You could get away with doing it yourself many moons ago as the systems were straight forward but these newer motors engines are not so straight forward & again even attempting to do the coolant change without the adequite knowledge can become costly in the end tbh .
Thanks Gary for the vid & i did like how you gave your engine bay a virtual wash haha .
@@pw3565 agreed with your statements above. I was told many years ago aswell that old coolant actually causes static in your engine so it’s best to change it every 2-3 years. Especially with newer cars, this creates havoc with the electronics.
Keep doing the good job
