  • In the third episode of Built By Hand, Ben is sitting down to design his personal portfolio website... and let's just say, well, it's not entirely a fun process. How do you design for yourself? How do you overcome imposter syndrome? How do you create something that looks and feels like it's on-brand... when it's a personal brand? Join Ben as he tackles his website's visual design, working through imposter syndrome, and hopefully... crafting a portfolio site that represents his personal brand.

      I don't think I can "thumbs up" this enough. I'm in your exact position and the struggle has been real. We've just got to keep trudging along and look to people like Big Daddy Ben (I have to be the only person to call him this, and I probably shouldn't) for inspiration.

    • @angelaengle12
      @angelaengle12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JadePX Well, I got my website put together. It's not 100% complete but its very close. I don't have a job in graphic design though. I decided to try doing Uber Eats and Doordash to float by on. I'll be doing that soon. The past 7 months I've been riding on savings and doing self-study and personal healing.
      My problem is that I'm passionate about game design, not graphic design. I can do graphic design, it comes pretty easy to me, but it doesn't excite me or challenge me.
      The good news though, is I finally got hold of server files for a game I use to play all the time and with help from a friend we got a game server running and I've been tinkering on that. I happen to see this comment as I'm editing wind physics for trees for the game currently.
      So, yeah, I wish I could say I landed a super amazing job, but no, lol. I'm at least doing something I love even though it doesn't pay anything. Uber and Doordash will be nice as well because I can schedule my own hours and the mental stress is very low. I'll be able to work on my server and still get the bills paid. I think that is the best I can do for now. Thank you for mentioning an update. I wouldn't of come back to update it had you not asked.

I completely understand how you feel Ben , when its for yourself you feel especially if you are a design company that the design of site has to be amazing as it's your calling card. We give ourselves way too much pressure ! Imposter syndrome is widespread in the creative industries. I really wish there was a final cure for it.

    • @TEGVB-
      @TEGVB- 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @oil knowles hmm, it’s an interesting topic you pose. I wonder if perhaps there doesn’t need to be a solution to dissolving that aspect entirely; certainly even that imposter has its own backstory to tell - it’s kind of like training wheels: allowing someone the space to get on the path might be more beneficial than succumbing to the fear that prevents them from ever doing it. Ultimately, it may be the first step that culminates in the birth of some truly wonderful creations. After all, isn’t the act of focusing on not creating imposter work sort of an imposter itself? In our attempt to avoid one result, do we then cause resistance to another? I’m not sure…
      That being said, from a personal and individual standpoint, I know that when I let go of the fear of judgment and the attachment to a result (easier said than done), I open myself creatively. It’s no longer about the safety of ensuring the creation checks all the boxes, or will be liked, or won’t be ridiculed; it becomes about the process of the creation itself, unattached from anything else. And that’s where I find the magic happens. Hope maybe that helps.

Although I do not speak English and most likely do not understand 100% of the message, this video came at the right time. Last week I had an episode with a client that left me lacking in confidence; with that same feeling of being of no use. And seeing you try, stumble and try again was something that moved me and helped me get ahead or at least try again.
    Coming out of this, the design of the web interface is spectacular! I love it and I already want to see it online.

I think my hardest struggle is seeing other designers work and thinking: "You're never going to design something this good", but it's like you said, we never see the process, only the end result. We don't see the time, effort, struggles and doubts the designer could have had. We just have to sit, draw, redraw, start over and keep going until we feel confident enough to design something that look like somebody else made :)

    Art and design is struggle and insecurity. So many things you've said in this series resonate. It also gives me some semblance of sanity in understanding that a) mine AND other's design processes can and will be messy b) working your way through those hard moments within a process DOES lead to breakthroughs and you're not alone in finding difficult patches. It has been a lovely series that really has helped my own metal health and given me confidence that the feelings I feel are universal and not me alone. Insecurity doesn't equal bad designer but resilience and effort can see good design materialise. Sometimes you just need your thoughts and feelings validated, cheers mate!

    Yo Ben, I've been designing about 20 yrs and have to say, watching you think through your process has challenged me to step back and use some of these tips. I often just dive in and push that boulder up the hill until it's there but without ever pausing to think a bit more and experiment.

    Thanks Ben. You know what I find to be pretty cool - you documented this entire rollercoaster ride by creating a very poetic and artistic video piece. At times I think it’s the inherent knowing that there is more inside, more that wants to be expressed - like to you’re holding the creative horses back at the gate - and it’s self-doubt that helps us; provides the catalyst for us to continue asking questions, digging deeper, and never allowing ourselves to settle for less than our fullest expression.

    So much inspiration. Definitely appreciate the graph timeline at the end. I'm in constant ebb and flow of the up and down and it's so true. Sometimes the "I suck" phase can be dark and gloomy, but we gotta persevere and push through. It was also great to hear that you're a self-taught designer. This gives so much hope to aspiring designers and creators like myself. I was in a rut and despite all of the time I invested in previous designs for my website, you reminded me about the process and the journey is about experimenting and trying new things. Thank you for the inspiration. Amazing how content finds you just when you need it most.

    The fact that you have the sense & self awareness to take morning walks. That's important: Andrew Huberman describes that well.
    Thankful for your work. It frees us. You give us a voice that we, in turn, can pull from. Language, the ability to use words to describe our process & emotions: Thank you!
    You did & are doing fine. That house build though....geesh!

    I feel you on the creative process. I was an actor before a designer and it is the exact same thing. You get inspired then you suck. Keep working and trying different solutions till you are somewhere good. I found that having a process to move through helps alleviate that stress and anxiety. You begin to understand and expect the stages. I also found that having a person you trust to see your work and review it is of eminence help and support. They tell you it is better than you think it is.

    Thank you for this series Ben. One thing I read when I was struggling with the portfolio creation process, and I forget the source, but the more experience you have the higher are the expectations you have of yourself and your work. Therefore the gap doesn't close, and this is okay. The gap keeps us designers and creative's moving forward, iterating, learning and improving our craft. Looking forward to seeing the build of this site!

    In my humble opinion as someone who's been designing since 2005... The term mobile first is more of a philosophy than an actual rule. It is literally no easier than starting desktop first and then making your mobile version. In fact, depending on how complicated your desktop version is, it's actually 10 times easier to start with that and then simplify it down to mobile

    Thank you so much for sharing this! Especially that last Ira Glass part. Most advice we hear in The Futur comes from an already pretty advanced place, where you are already confident in your skills, your work is killer and you now need to get yourself out there. Sometimes it's nice to be reminded that getting to that place of confidence in what you do takes a lot of hard work too, and that this challenging road is nonetheless worth traveling.

    Hey Ben, I’m so glad that you spoke up about this, I don’t see much content about the design process and the struggle behind it except for in the futur. It really sucks when the imposter syndrome hits and everyone tell you that you should be confident but you just don’t believe it. I think the fear hindered me from creating, coz I was so afraid of failure. But your video helped me to take just one step closer and realised it’s okay to doubt urself and to just keep pushing thru. Thank you so much :))

    I'm 9 minutes into this and this has been a mirror to my own life (though my kids are a bit older and I'm not building a house). Thanks for putting this out there!
    Also...
    Imposter Syndrome, Writer's/ Creative Block and things of this nature are only as real as you allow them to be. When I wrote more in a previous life, I would always blame lulls on the "block", which looking back, was essentially a pass NOT to do the work. Like the block was going to suddenly lift away and the words would come again. It doesn't quite work like that. Things and concepts only have weight and meaning if we choose to give them weight and meaning.
    I'm starting my own portfolio journey this week and am scared out of my mind.
    Again, thank you putting this out there Ben! Much appreciated!

  • @KerrieRedgate
    @KerrieRedgate 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m with you, Ben, on building the desktop first before the mobile. As a design process, this makes more sense to me as the desktop design inevitably turns out to be a bit more complex purely due to the space and dimensions; so the mobile version is usually more of an extraction process than an addition process. It’s much easier to refine an idea down from a more complex one, than build up with a bigger vision from a more restricted space. It’s the Zen of design, as I see it. The mobile version becomes purer in essence - it has to say more with less space. That’s Zen.
