Atocha Station in Madrid and its captivating surroundings.
    Historic Trainshed Turned Tropical Garden:
Atocha Station has a rich history dating back to 1851, but the real gem lies in its historic trainshed, which opened in 1892. Imagine stepping into a lush tropical garden where thousands of plants thrive. The old trainshed, now devoid of tracks, offers a serene oasis amidst the bustling station. You can sip coffee or enjoy a meal at one of the bars and restaurants with outdoor seating, surrounded by greenery. It’s a delightful place to wait for your train, and the perfect spot for a moment of tranquility.
    Madrid Puerta de Atocha:
Beyond the tropical garden, you’ll find the modern terminus for high-speed trains. Known as Madrid Puerta de Atocha, this vast trainshed houses 15 terminus platforms. From here, you can catch AVE, Avlo, Ouigo, or Iryo trains to destinations like Barcelona, Cordoba, Seville, Malaga, Cadiz, and Granada. The architecture is impressive, blending old-world charm with contemporary design.
    Underground Platforms and Suburban Trains:
Beneath the main station, there are 10 underground through platforms used by cross-Madrid suburban trains and occasional mainline trains. These platforms belong to Madrid Atocha Cercanias. If you arrive on an AVE or similar train, you can walk through the ground floor departures area into the concourse and explore the tropical garden. If you’re at the back of the train, take the arrivals footbridge to reach the same area. Additionally, a handful of mainline trains cross Madrid, using platforms 5 and 6 at Madrid Atocha-Cercanias.
    Nearby Attractions:
Reina Sofía Museum: Just a short walk from Atocha, this museum houses an impressive collection of contemporary and modern art.
Real Jardin Botanico: A magnificent botanical garden awaits nearby. Stroll among exotic plants and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Parque del Retiro: One of Madrid’s most iconic parks, Parque del Retiro, lies within easy walking distance. Explore its beautiful paths, fountains, and the famous Crystal Palace.
