I was in Madrid last week for a conference and used the Metro a lot. Me and my travelling companion (a lady) are both over 60 years - on EVERY journey, a young person offered her a seat! Lovely people and lovely city! James.

Clearest explanation I've seen! Sadly, it came out a month after I returned and had figured most of that out by personal experience. Awesome that you note the platform will only host YOUR train, unlike NYC or SFO where multiple lines share your platform.
A tip for the airport transfer to the city center: You can also take the local train from Terminal 4 to Atocha station. This costs €2.60 and the journey takes around 30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased from the gray and red ticket machines in the lobby of the station, but the process can be a little confusing. It is much easier if you have a debit or credit card with a contactless payment function. This can be used to pass through the automatic access barrier to the platform. The ticket price is paid directly. It should also work if you pay with a smartphone. As far as I know, the trains run every 30 minutes between 6 a.m. and midnight.
About going to the airport and back, there is a second bus express line (200) that goes from the terminals to Avenida de america in the buisness distric (María de Molina-Castellana) with a stop on Canillejas connecting to metro L5 (to go to the center) and only costs the flat rate of 1.5€ and then is also the option of taking the Cercanías C1 or C10 that take you from the terminals to Recoletos (5 minutes from Cibeles) for the flat rate of 2.5€, and only takes 30 minutes, the only downside is that if you are going from the T1, T2 or T3 you will have to travel to the T4 to catch the Cercanías. Also coment that metro is working to create a direct route from the T4 to atocha in the form of an expansion of the line 11 and a conection with treminals 1,2 and 3 with callao and gran vía in the form of a Line 5 expansion Apart from that very good explanation of the system and specially about the multi card that can be a bit confusing about if it's better to take a 10-Journey or Single tickets.
Honestly, I've lived in big cities for years here and abroad. And the "need" of having to own a mobile phone to do all the procedures it's not evolution, but dependence. 🦋✨ Thank you for this video, for your unique style and, as always, for your great work. ❤
This reminds me of when we were staying at the Hotel Europa in Puerta del Sol. We jumped on the Metro to get to the Prado Museum. It took us about three stops to realize we were going the wrong way. We definitely learned fast after that.
Hi! Great video guide! I bet people will find it very useful! Just one comment regarding the transport from and to the airport. Right now the metro is being extended so apart of the line 8 also line 5 will reach T123 and line 11 will reach T4, and that will be very useful if you are not going straight to Atocha or Cibeles.
A good explanation for the metro and for going to the airport is that there are also regular bus lines from the EMT, the public company, and two Cercanías train lines that take you directly to various places and stations in the city, even from outside the city. center.
Excellent video. We have been to Madrid a few times and experienced the Metro. But your clear and simple explanation such as how to use the 10 day tickets selection and how to share would have saved us some money for sure. Thank you, as always very educational and enjoyable.
James & Yoly, thanks for sharing and educating. When in Madrid in 2019 from the UK, I found the metro quite easy to use, but buying a travel card was quite confusing. Also if you choose the wrong exit from a station, it can totally throw you when you have planned a route, as I found out to my cost. I relied on Google Maps, to plan my route but they were inaccurate as to the exits, as the exit I used wasn't even shown. Thank you both for this guide! ❤
Great video, as always. It's always lovely to see more of Yoly. You do a really good job of giving visitors enough information to be successful, without overwhelming them.
Super Easy!!! Used Red and Yellow lines. Bought the 10 pass and that's all you need! Walking wnd enjoying the sites qnd voila, you're there. $8.60 spent from friday until today, monday. On to Porto.
Wow, I requested this very video! I'm glad you made a very clear explanation about the Madrid metro system, especially for the older folks whom I've always seen struggling a lot anytime I've visited Madrid. I usually helped them out but it's great that they can prepare through this clear video. Well done, James y Yoli!
Great info. The Metro probably seems intuitive to the locals, but to tourists it can sometimes be quite cofusing. Just FYI, we use Cercanias quite a lot, mainly because, we usually have long distance train tickets in hand. Most of those tickets are CombinadoCercanias, which means the Cercanias trip is free if used withing 3 to 4 hours of your train trip. A great way to get between the airport (T4), Chamartin or Atocha for free.
Thanks for the video! We used the AirPort Express bus last time we were in Madrid to get to P. De Atocha to head south. We only used it bc the metro was down or there was a strike. However, it turned out to be a great option and didn’t require changes or planning, just a direct shot. We will definitely use it again next time.
about pickpockets, I guess it can be a bit more complicated than that - they also target people who seem distracted, people who are in groups, either the youngest or the oldest people around, and people who look like they might be carrying expensive items. The pickpockets themselves can be of any age, in one story I heard from Madrid he was a very handsome older man, stood close to his targets who thought he might be flirting with them and was caught with his hand in their bag. They have very light hands and sometimes employ distraction tactics, they are pros. We tend to think we are worldly and that it would never happen to us...well, unfortunately they are very daring and very experienced - it pays to be slightly paranoid in this case. Ojo!👁
In any major city, especially a tourist destination, I act like I do in my home country in a major city: Keep my purse or bag close and in view, be wary of anyone getting too close, etc. I rarely use my phone in a crowded subway to avoid distractions. Yes, I'm a paranoid city dweller, but it has served me well.
Un dato que considero útil: con la aplicación Tarjeta Transporte pueden controlar cuantos viajes le queda a su Multi Tarjeta y también se pueden cargar viajes, todo con su móvil (si tiene NFC). ¡Es muy práctico!
Nice clear explanation. I'm used to city travel on public transportation, but I know many who aren't (including my partner). This is a great way to put someone at ease using public transport...which is how we do it.
This is really handy - I experienced the daunting underground on my first visit to Madrid only just over a year ago. I had just over an hour to get to the airport and used to underground but got on the loop heading the wrong way my boarding gate was the furthest possible place in the airport - thankfully, made it with just 10mins to go! People were boarding the plane - the closest I've come to missing flight.
@@nurjimenez7401 my return flight had been delayed massively so threw my plans out a bit, as went for a long lunch in the sun -but yes, it was a lesson learned.
Great video as always! I would like to add that the Madrid metro app is actually very easy to use and a great tool; I never use any other app when I take Madrid metro.
I wish I had watched this before our trip. We got lost at N.M. oh my goodness it was frustrating, not knowing that only the one train will use the one track and stop. A nice local couple helped us, as we couldn't find any staff. We finally figured it out looking at the map, highly recommend a map! We've used the Metro all over the world, and this was definitely the most confusing so far. Thank you for your video 🙏🏾
The Madrid Metro system is piss easy really. It's laid out exactly like the London underground and easy to purchase a card (in a multiple of languages) which you top up per day/route. |The great thing about it is that connects the airport to the centre.
Leaving for Madrid this coming Wednesday and this info is awesome! I have also bought your Madrid guide. Question: Since the 10 journey is shareable can you buy 2 airport supplements?
Thank you for your very helpful video. This will come in very useful as I am visiting Madrid with friends for the first time in a few weeks. Can’t wait.
My frequently use route depends where I wanna go from the airport : (1) line8 from the airport to nuevos ministerios then transfer to renfe C3 o C4 direct to Sol. (2)take Renfe C1 or C10 direct from the airport to Atocha
Saludos
You and Yoli make the most interesting videos about Spain. I'm certain you are making special tours. The Metro in Madrid is the easiest network to figure out, but thank you for helping first time travellers. Personally, I prefer to walk and stay in the center of the city. Day trips to Toledo, Salamanca are easy to schedule via Cercanias trains. From T4 there is a bus the 203 that takes you straight into the center (Banco de España) stop. I believe the last time I took it it was only 5 euros.
That's super helpful, thanks. I really appreciate visiting cities with less complicated metros, and it's good to know what to expect before you get there. (Random side note: was that some kind of spy type dead drop at 13:07? 😀 )
What a great, easy whatching and simple video. This video was amazingly informative! Thanks guys! I will rewatch it for sure whenever my trip is nearer. ❤❤❤❤❤
very good video...wish i watdched it before i navigated it all and i would have saved time...the main thing that confused me was not having to touch off ...you just walk through the barrier...had to stand back and watch others
I agree and use Citymapper for any city that it applies to. Overall Madrid is very easy to use transport around as you have shown in the excellent video.
I miss you guys. I need to update my membership. I have been busy with life but I am trying to stay connected. I still come back and search for your videos for updates. All the best.
As a family of 4 visiting Madrid we found it about the same price to just take a cab instead of walking to the stations. It would have been cheaper for longer trips but short trips maybe it was just a few € more to use a taxi.
Wow tantas veces q he estado en Madrid y ahora es que entiendo lo del metro, bus etc 😂 creo es su primer video informativo de Madrid sin una caña o Ribera 🍷 en la mano 😂 excelente video. Gracias! 🏆
There’s no air conditioning in the platforms but some of them have giant ventilators in one end. No doors open automatically. The ones that don’t have a lever, have a button instead, but you still have to press the button. They were automatic during the pandemic but they went back to being manual.
Thank you James and Yoly. We just got back to the U.S. from Toledo, Sevilla, Cordoba, and Madrid. Your videos were very helpful in researching the trip. Really enjoyed the video about things to see in Toledo. Spain is stunning country and the trip exceeded my expectations. Keep the great content coming.
Your travel guide vlog is a goldmine of information. Your tips and recommendations are spot on. Oh, and have you checked out the new v4 Bento Bag and the Ikigai Backpack by NomadLane? They look like the ideal companions for your travel explorations.
Great vid, so basically if you do the London Underground you can do the Madrid Metro! It's very useful that you can use the 10 trip card for more than one person per journey. Do you guys have a video for the 10 or so best places to visit in Madrid?
Thank you for this video, very helpful. I am in a wheelchair traveling to Spain in September -October and will be also traveling to Madrid. Obviously a lot of research planning is needed, I have watched a lot of youtube for info and there isn't a lot at all about wheelchair travel around Spain including Madrid so I'm looking forward to the adventure which I will be filming my trip and the accessibility of each city we visit through my experience. BTW I have found a lot of your video' very helpful in terms of which, foods, culture, and cities we decided to visit this time round. My diet is mainly Keto, so there is a lot of food I can definitely have, Spainish diet looks to be high fat and meat as well as high carbs including fried, also I don't drink alcohol which seems to be a regular in ...BUT when in Spain I might have to sample 🤣🤣
Great Vid. One point I came across. Pay attention to the wheelchair symbols on the direction signs in stations. If you randomly follow direction signs with and without the symbol you can end up going round in a circle. Done it😁
A very good video, as usual. However, central Madrid is tiny compared to, say, London. By the time you have faffed around with the metro, you might as well have walked (though I hasten to add not from the airport).
Hi James, I love your videos and find them very helpful and I would like to know the best way to get to Chamartin train Station from the Airport. My wife and I are arriving at Chamartin Station from Murcia and want to meet my Daughter there as she is flying in to T1 from the UK.
Por favor ... uno de Cercanias ... y uno de RENFE ... y las estaciones principales del Metro para connectar ... a estos y al aeropuerto ... y uno de los autobuses ... este quedo muy bueno y muy practico ... Thank you ... Gracinhas ...
I am one of yout subscribers here. I am here in Madrid until Saturday. If you have a fan meetup, I am keen to go and see you over some drinks. If not, I can visit you in your devour tours office.
Great video and very useful for my upcoming visit, thanks. One question perhaps you can help with? In your video it says the 10 trip Metrobús ticket: €6,10. On the Madrid Metro site it says it is €12.20?
4:57 Glad I am not the only one who is completely confused whenever using the Cercanias trains. Every time I tried to use the system, I was either on the wrong track, wrong train or wrong direction. Is it too much to ask to have a concise list of arrivals displayed at the stations and the destination displayed on the trains? I live in Philadelphia, which is essentially a third world city when it comes to transit, but even we do this. Come on Madrid, you excel in so many ways, time to get the Cercanias right too!
Great video but a few improvements... It's a bit unclear as to what constitutes a "trip". Is a bus to metro to bus journey one trip or three? that would greatly impact my judgement as to whether the tourist pass is a better deal than the 10 trip pass. 2nd you used MapQuest's directions feature to plan a journey. It's a GREAT help when it's accurate. It mislead me though on my first visit to the city. I wanted to get from Madrid Chamartin Train Station to Hostal Goyma at the San Fernando metro stop. Seems that MapQuest has incomplete info on the San Fernando metro stop so it doesn't use it when suggesting routes. If anyone knows how to fix this... Please do.
I was in Madrid last week for a conference and used the Metro a lot. Me and my travelling companion (a lady) are both over 60 years - on EVERY journey, a young person offered her a seat! Lovely people and lovely city! James.

Thumbs up and subscribing. Watching from North Carolina USA
Kia Ora James and Yoly. Thanks for your amazing video. Fantastic! Can't wait to use it next year. Arohanui

Missed opportunity. 🤣
i was in madrid over the weekend was a very helpful video thanks
Your travel guide vlog is a goldmine of information. Your tips and recommendations are spot on. Oh, and have you checked out the new v4 Bento Bag and the Ikigai Backpack by NomadLane? They look like the ideal companions for your travel explorations.
Excellent I can’t wait to get back to Madrid.
You guys have all the best info. Thank you!
This video has helped enormously
Thank you for this ! Good and informative video 👍🏼
Great watch as always 👊🏿
Multi-Pass!! 😁 (5th element movie reference)
Hi James, I love your videos and find them very helpful and I would like to know the best way to get to Chamartin train Station from the Airport. My wife and I are arriving at Chamartin Station from Murcia and want to meet my Daughter there as she is flying in to T1 from the UK.
Thank you very much for this video. It's really helpful❤
Kakamiss sumakay n MRt,ung siksikan hehehe,done watching.ingat lgi host ❤❤❤
❤great video...very informative and helpful
good info , well-presented thanks
Now I know to always travel in the last carriage for doggo spotting! 🐕 🐩 🦮
And large bicycle sporting, if you're into that 😂
A useful video - well done.
About to do a brief trip to Madrid. Thank you
Have been stuck and confused in that cyclical hell before. When you come out...there is wine and dancing!
Your dry humor is so funny, oh my gosh! 😂😂
That was awesome. Thanks.
Used it for 2 days a year ago easy to figure out and use 😊😊😊😊
Great video and very useful for my upcoming visit, thanks. One question perhaps you can help with? In your video it says the 10 trip Metrobús ticket: €6,10. On the Madrid Metro site it says it is €12.20?
Muchas gracias, excelente video. Muy util.
Please do.
Love this video! Gracias
