Hi Patrick, I bought your books and practise you're breathing techniques daily. It's just become second nature now to breathe through my nose slowly and quietly. I've struggled with anxiety and addiction to anxiety medications in the past and I feel like you're knowledge can really help people like me. Just wanted to thank you, you've changed my life for the better.

What a lovely exchange of ideas. I was particularly interested in Zen knowledge around the importance of the lower lumbar. This is well known in singing, particularly Bel Canto, where the power of the voice comes from the breath, and particularly from the lower back. Singers practice "back breathing" which is not really well understood, in general. It is based on body posture and release of the crura of the diaphragm. Belly breathing encourages lordosis and should be avoided as it adds tension to the crura. On another note, "extending the exhale so the inhale happens naturally" is a step for beginners. It allows them to feel a relaxed inhale, perhaps for the first time. The diaphragm contracts on inhalation only, not exhalation. Once the diaphragm knows how to inhale lightly, slowly and deeply, the exhale should be restful (not squeezed to improve the next inhale). Hope this helps.

Incredible really enjoyed it - my love for breathwork came from my 1st Sivananda yoga retreat and then my passion to share the power of the breath is from my experience of how little it is covered in yoga training and most yoga classes today - so its amazing to hear from a Zen practitioner as well. Understanding and experiencing the connection between mind, body and breath should be on the school curriculum.

What a wonderful and eye-opening discussion. I'm just finishing going through the Buteyko breathing course with Mim Beim, an amazing teacher. I'm SO GLAD to have found this method for my asthma which I've had since I was 6 months old (now 59 years old). I can definitely see a connection between trauma and breath and I continue to deepen my understanding about this, and this conversation really helped. Thank you to both of you for your beautiful work!

Patrick, this is truly wonderful that you are tying together the quest for sound mind, body and spirit through the essential interface of the breath. So many good points here! I'm grateful that you are helping to make the case for improved functional breathing as a necessary, or at least helpful, component of meditation. (btw- I cured my asthma with buteyko breathing over 6 years ago. L.S.D, amen.)

Great talk. Thank you very much. one more reason to come to visit ireland ! lol just a short flight form hamburg :-)
I'm amazed by the peacefulness irradiated by patrick during the talk. i love people who breathe slowly . i have been practicing classical hatha yoga for a while now, and usually i'll do a few rounds of kapalabhati , anuloma viloma and bhastrika before meditation.
Pranayama was a real game changer for me to come to actually enjoy meditation. But it's not only pranayama.
As Lucas very knowingly mentioned the importance of good posture, therefor asanas are also very important, so you can keep body and mind steady and ease in your posture. Sthira-sukham asanam as stated in the yoga sutras by Master Patanjali. It can also be interpreted as abide in good space, from the root of the sanskrit words sukha , su -good, kha -space.
This sutra also gives us a hint to live in balance with our prana, to live in the rhythm of prana.
Also it is very important , i would say it's utmost important to live in a conducive environment. Same as the food you eat, its not the breath only, its your whole life.
I do not agree with atomizing life and seeing a solution in taking a breath course, or zen course, or yoga course. That's not going to work, if you keep on doing the wrong things in your day to day life, eat the wrong food, read the wrong books, listen to the wrong music, sleep at the wrong ours, eat at the wrong times, surround yourself with the wrong people, do the wrong job.
Yoga, Zen are not pills, they are lifestyles. Paradigmatic lifestyles.
Unfortunately the majority of the inhabitants of this planet are attached if not addicted to their selfsick-making lifestyles in the first place. So realizing this and letting them go is the VERY FIRST STEP towards healing.
My conclusion from this discussion is that breathwork is without doubt a great instrument by itself, but it is just one tool in the toolbox! We can not dismantle the toolbox. We need the whole box.
Warm Regards to chevere Colombia and to Ireland

Interesting comment (19.55 mins) regarding the Lotus sitting posture and the 5th lumbar., in relation to the diaphragm.
Personally, from my own experience- I believe is the Quadratus Laborum (QL) muscle - which starts there and connects to the diaphragm in the back. When we breath LOW you can feel that slight expansive movement in that area. The idea is to bring the breath into the front, the sides AND back of the belly.
If these are too contricted ,, or out of balance,, one side shorter (trauma reflex) it's going to affect breathing. The Psoas muscle also is connected to the back of the diaphragm with LOW slow expansive breathing .
The domino effect from this is that the internal organs are massaged just from better posture and breathing .Interested to hear other comments or experiences.

      Interesting!!! Great observation!
If I do " relaxed" slow exhale, the exhale invokes a fight or flight response.
When I emply the back muscles in my back and front to empty , it neutralises that feeling.
I no longer try to belly breath, but breathe from the ribs out. This feels healthier

Omg. I'm stuck in my head. I've been wondering how to stop over thinking everything. I bring more package too. I have Narcolepsy, and I also notice that my ribs don't expand outward when I breathe. Is that shallow breathing? Is that really bad? I feel like I'm about to suffocate, so I end up taking a deep breathe by bringing up my shoulders... but, that's not good. What should I do? I think I may have to work on strengthening my diaphragm? Or, hopefully, slow breathing will strengthen it.. perhaps? I got the short end of both sticks, for sure, on sleep AND breathing. I'll be keeping an eye out for your book!

Try lying on your back with your knees bent. Place a book on your belly. Relax and try to breathe naturally. See if you can breathe gently into your belly and the book should gently rise and fall. Helps to get a feel of what natural breathing is like - babies do it automatically. Hope this tip helps.

would like to hear where from dogen to suzuki, formalising breathing as described in this podcast as "a pillar of zen" is stated? Not saying breath practice is not a good idea - just asking where is it when you say "they talk about breathing" - who's "they"? THere are buddhist practices with breathing as a focus - but not aware of it being part of any zen discourse. Thank you

    • @OxygenAdvantage
      @OxygenAdvantage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @itsallinhow,
Breathing is an important part of zen practice but you are right, it is often left out of the discourse or not predominintly at the front.
I found this article about breathing and zen.
      www.lionsroar.com/what-are-we-ignoring-about-breathing/
The author mentions that "Zen masters such as Dogen Zenji and Keizan Zenji, the founders of the Soto Zen school, emphasized the essential reasons for practice, but gave little instruction on breathing."
He adds later, "In Fukanzazengi (Universal Recommendation for Zazen), Dogen Zenji says, “Just breathe quietly through the nostrils.” If the breath is short, be short. If long, be long."
So while it may not have been explicitly mentioned by the masters, nose breathing is an essential part of zen.
      I hope that helps.

Zen practice has a tendency to devolve into trying to be right. The Buddha called it shila-vratopadana. Shila = rules, virtue, discipline. Vrata = vows. Upadana = clinging, attaching. So shila-vratopadana means something like clinging to virtue and vows of practice. Being attached to some right way of doing it. There turns out to be something inherently unfriendly about this tendency. Even if we compensate by actively cultivating friendliness as an object, the underlying unfriendliness is there unless we are wise to it. The alternative approach, if we can make a friend of being wrong and stop trying to be right (always easier said than done), frees us up to breathe how we like. Medically, Patrick's emphasis makes perfect sense on not breathing fast and shallow. But a Zen practitioner needn't be afraid of consciously doing the wrong thing, consciously getting to know the wrong thing, consciously making a friend of the wrong thing. Much more conducive to breathing freely than unconsciously trying to do the right thing!
