Thank you because the impetuosity of the fans did not stop you from continuing to explore this real treasure of diamonds and pearls, new subscriber here for that. I agree with all your observations, including those regarding the dramatic moments in the band's past - yes, they had such critical moments, but somehow they overcame them all. As an interesting element: Tuomas Holopainen composes each time specifically for the voice of the current singer. In these conditions, Floor Jansen joined the band in the middle of a world tour, so she had to creatively perform an entire setlist of songs composed for the vocal abilities of the first 2 singers - the concert in Wacken 2013 was towards the end of this tour, when she was in the band for only about 10 months.
    Greetings from Romania!

@@nicod1361 I understand that you say that the songs in DPP were composed before choosing Anette. You may be right. I suspect, however, that Tuomas had an idea about the desired vocal profile (other than Tarja's)

@@nicod1361 NW had toured with After Forever so I think Tuomas really wanted Floor but knew she wouldn't leave After Forever because they were really hitting their stride and the charts hard in 2005. There's also a nod to "Alice In Wonderland" snuck in there.
    "Follow the madness,
    Alice, you know, once did."
There's another "Alice" reference in, "I Want My Tears Back".
    "Where is the Wonder?
    Where's the Awe?
    Where's dear Alice,
    Knocking on the door?
    Where's the trap door
    That takes me there?
    Where the Real is shattered
    By a mad marsh hare."
Tuomas draws inspiration from Lots of things. Rather challenging to sus them all out at times

This song was written for the second singer, Anette Olzon, who was mainly a pop singer and didn't / couldn't sing the middle classical section. Several of the songs were written for the first singer, Tarja Turunen who was predominantly operatic including Ghost Love Score and Floor tried to vary the style a lot more to make it interesting. Live definitely better with Floor and so many songs in the studio are other singers.

Something that you should know about FLOOR JANSEN. She started singing in a symphonic metal band at just 16 years old. After Forever (1995-2009). Then she created a new Progressive Metal band, ReVamp (2009-2016). In 2018 she released a personal Hard Rock project (Northward). In 2012, she was invited by Nightwish to finish their world tour, after the band's second female singer (Annete Olzon) left. In 2013 she became Nightwish's full time lead Vocalist. She is a singing teacher. She sings in Dutch, German, English, Spanish, Finnish, Swedish, Italian and Latin. She sings Heavy Metal, Trash Metal, Pop, Rock, Symphonic Metal, Arya and Opera. She even sang rap. THE BEST SINGER TODAY IN THE WHOLE WORLD.

So, eye-candy: I just watched Floor live on stage, last friday, in Hamburg with a friend. It was amazing! Anneke van Giersbergen did open up for her. With just herself, an acoustic guitar and a tape-recorder on stage. (Anneke needed a band for 2 of her songs.)
Floor, @the end of the show, confirmed, that it was her, listening to Anneke, to make her choose to sing metal.
Rumour said: it was the song Strange Machines by The Gathering. Well: when the show was done, it was exactly this song, playing from tape (instrumental). So I'm pretty sure this rumour is absolutely true. (Live @ Pinkpop Festival is the video to look for!)
Große Freiheit 36. A rather small-ish place. Packed with people to the rim. Floor said: "Glad to be back in Hamburg! But they didn't tell us that we would play in a sauna." So true!
Think I saw her parents in the audience. Not sure. Her parents where in the audience at that show in Tampere, Finland. But: the whole concert was pretty much like a family event. Most people also knew Anneke. An unforgettable concert, for sure!
By the end of the show, a rose was given to her on one side of the stage. Than another one on the other side. Then a small packed gift.
    "these are roller skates, right?"
At the end of that song, a whole bunch of roses came flying from different directions. She has posted a "thank you" with those roses in hand, by now on here.
Some 1st hand experience about this concert. She's home in Sweden, by now. To become a mom, for the 2nd time.
Greetings from the rainy far north of Germany!

The rumours about the singers are probably true. When Tuomas and the band had to kick the first singer Tarja, that was a terrible time for the band and horrific for Toumas who grew up with Tarja. To cope with the hate from fans and depression he wrote the song "Poet and the pendulum" and the best version is the one from Wembley Arena 2015 live with Floor.

Regarding the question of studio vs. live, with Floor fronting NW, you must go live. The band has such a symbiotic relationship with their audience that going back to listen to their studio work sounds a bit flat and lifeless. Plus, NW is so tight and flawless live that it could be a studio version.

There are a lot of Nightwish songs with so many different facets to the songs, the whole catalogue for Nightwish makes for some fantastic music, I know I can just spend nights at a time immersed in the band and especially the concert DVDs, each singer brings something different bud I think Floor is the most complete singer and has given them a power and dynamic that is magic and especially live, I saw them at the end of last year, only a few concerts into the UK shows when Floor was still getting tired after the big C (thankfully she is doing well now) But she was still powerful with a huge stage presence and is very hard for another singer to match with the diversity of her singing, I enjoy your review a lot as I love stories as well and Storytime captures the fun of stories powerfully, another fantasic live song is "I want my tears back" from Buenos Aires in 2018, the reactions from the audience and Floor having so much fun during the song that night

From Tarja's repertoire I'd probably recommend either She Is My Sin or Passion and the Opera. But also I Wish I Had an Angel as it nicely showcases Nightwish's *other* singer, which is Marco, their bassist. I'm not sure which live recordings are best, but there's always the studio ones! From Anette's era I Want My Tears Back is a good one, Amaranth is another fun one, or The Islander, which is more of a ballad, but features Marco prominently and that's always a good thing in my book! There's also Bye Bye Beautiful, where Marco plays prim... also known as the Tarja break-up song.
Oof, I made quite a list there 😅

If you want fun check out I Want My Tears Back, Buenos Aires. Could be an issue though as they don't use scottish bagpipes. They use the Irish variety, much sweeter to the ear LOL. Guess where I am from. I visited Edinburgh for the first time this year and I really felt at home. Kindred Spirits I think.

Whenever you get around to exploring Nightwish outside of the 2013 concert (awesome as it is) I'd recommend checking out Yours is an Empty Hope, live from Wembly 2015. You'll get Floor's full range of vocal talent including the growl that just doesn't seem like it can come from her, yet...does. Enjoy the ride though

The Nightwish Army is quite devoted and very insistent at times. Some reactors, as a compromise, have chosen one day a week for NW reactions. Give that a go. End of the day, it's Your Channel. Do what You want, what brings You joy. There are more new people reacting to NW all the time.

The amazing thing is none of these songs from this concert were written for Floor .....shes only been with the Band 10 months at this time ......Storytime was written for Anette Olzon the 2nd singer who was more of a pop singer (tuomas didnt want to hire another classical singer after Tarja who was 100 % classical) .
With Floor you can do Anette's catalog and Tarjas .......whatever you want her to do .....she can .

Very happy to subscribe - as someone who was brought up singing in the classical tradition (sacred mostly with a smidgen of secular 😊) I was more drawn towards heavier music from a very young age - I imagine the link being that a lot of what I was singing were in minor keys which is the preferred mode for most metal bands. But there is something about Nightwish and it's super special but hard to explain. Off the top of my head - 2 major key numbers from the Wacken concert are 'Amaranthe' and an instrumental called 'Last of the Wilds' if you want to check those out. As for the late great Ronnie James Dio, I was lucky to see him perform many times from the early eighties to 2015 or so - a very soulful and technical singer - able to tell a story with ease in everything he sung - and with little to no training too! Take good care of yourself 😃

Great reaction to one of my faves! I definitely think you should go for _Romanticide_ next, live at Wacken again (pronounced with a V because it's in Germany). It's the song I most enjoy musically knowledgeable people reacting to and analysing. Live is always the way to go with Floor, and almost all fans will be happy with that.
As for other singers, no rush. Original singer Tarja is primarily legit, the most operatic of the three, so that may be an issue for you (I enjoy her singing almost any song, but find a whole album a bit wearing, so I would sympathise). She is also best live. Middle singer Anette is more poppy and generally better in studio versions. But there's plenty of time for them!

Hi Melisa! If you decide to give a listen to Nightwish's song "The Poet and the Pendulum", please do yourself a favour and read up on the backstory to this song.
When/if you do a reaction video, after reading up on it, please turn on subtitles/closed caption for the lyrics. If you don't do the backstory, the lyrics most likely won't make sense.
Ohhhh....and bring a box of tissues.

Did you know that not only did Nightwish have 3 different female leads, they also have 3 vocalists on that stage. 1 Female, 2 males. I can't wait for you to find them all.
For the first man, watch either "Romanticide" or "the Islander" or for a real surprise: "Yours is an empty hope"
For the second man, I'd recomend the two Planet Rock accoustic sessions: "How's the heart" & "Nemo"
They are both in the other two of the great 3 ("Ghost love score", "Poet and the Pendulem" & "the Greatest Show on Earth"), but it's more fun to tackle the latter two later.

The reason live Nightwish is suggested...is bc Floor Jansen is the current and longest running female lead, and alot of the songs in their live sets were originally sung by other ladies...totally changing the experience of the song!
Wacken is in Germany, pronounced, VAW-KEHN.

OMG, you are SO effing charming. Can we be besties? I LOVE the personality you show in your reactions. So I'm French American, but I've always, always been drawn to Scotland. I've read tons of fiction (especially historical fiction) set there, and I mourn the losses at Culloden. I went to Macalester College. We were the Fighting Scots. We had our own plaid. Every year, the college held a Scottish Country Fair. We would be awakened by the sound of bag pipes on that day. I find bag pipes strangely compelling. I even married a Scottish American. My husband and I keep talking about visiting. If Scotland is filled with people as charming as you, I think I definitely need to pay y'all a visit.

I’d suggest trying the song Sleeping Sun live at the Vizovoice Festival 2016. Simply beautiful performance by Floor and the band that really shows their their softer spiritual side. The video also isn’t burdened by unnecessary shots of crowd antics, which is something I felt really took away from the Wacken 2013 concert footage. I’d rather watch the band than some overly enthusiastic fans mugging for the camera. I never could understand the mindset of people who go to a performance and are more interested in watching themselves and their friends “perform” rather than watching what they came to see. But maybe that’s just me.

I am not a great fan of operatic (or legit as you call them) vocals in general either, but the way it is use in this song is absolutely essential. Anette, the previous singer, for whom this song was written actually, could not do those and needed them to be done by a background tape. That takes away so much of the magic of this song!

This is our Valkyrie Goddess for you. And you witnessed first hand a "Dutch Windmill" , and to finish you off, The Operatic "Cruise Missile" !!!!
Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bullwhip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions).
Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.
Awesome tune , although it is kind of a pop/rockish sound (originally sung by Anette, the second singer of Nightwish), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER (And colors) !!! Including this "Operatic" part, what was originally done by children's choir because vocal limitations on their second singer (Great singer also, I might add), but Floor has none of that "Limit".
Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straightforward" as many other bands, because Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this.
