The main thing was that they really didn't have access to the source code and they had to basically remake the game from scratch. Which is fine because they did some great quality of life changes and make some bosses more easier to deal with.

Fun fact, the number "765" that appears in a lot of Namco games it's actually a reference to the name of the company. If you translate the number to japanese then it becomes "ナムゴー" or "namugoo" which sounds and looks like the japanese name of the company "ナムコ" or "Namuco".
im really glad this is such a well done remake. my initial reaction was “oh they’re definitely gonna fuck this up” but seeing they actually managed to fix the game’s biggest issues really makes me happy.
What’s really weird is that despite that they replaced Ms. Pac-Man with Pac-Mom in this game, the soundtrack still has her theme sprinkled in the music. Even you can hear it from the title theme as well. XD I guess it’s a sneaky way to still acknowledge Ms. Pac-Man in the game while flipping off ATGames as well. XD
Kris is such an iconic mario character. His big blonde afro and signature orange ovarls are so cool. And the way he'd challange mario to try and find him in select levels of mario galaxy was so fun. Ya gotta love his cocky attitude. Honestly I couldn't imagine a time before Mario's brother Kris... And why would I want to?
765 easter egg is mainly because in japan using a pun system you say the numbers as Na Mu Ko. Namco. It is also used in Idolmaster for the main company you usually work for in the series 765 productions and pronounced Namuko Productions and referenced in smaller ways with tekken and ace combat as well And. Since you mentioned that a Japanese company handled the remake, they would have known what 765 would have mean to Namco, while the first American developer would never think too much about Seven Six Five
Honestly I love the ending in how the Ghost just gives Pacman this sob story and Pacman, while keeping that iconic smile, just eats him with no fucks given.
Somehow James criticizing the fact that Tommy Tallarico took credit for something he has little to no involvement in was WAY too accurate. (By the way, sometimes Joey does make music. And he does seem like he’s credited on doing some music on the game.)
I'm glad people are enjoying this remake. I've heard people enjoyed this more than the original, which is rare for most remakes. I'm hoping Bandai Namco will release a World 2 remake. I also hope Bamco fixes the legal issues with Ms. Pac-Man. You should definitely talk about the Klonoa remakes (or the original counterparts) and the spinoffs. Klonoa has become one of my new favorite video game characters this year.
I honestly never understood the problem with the original ending. I mean if someone kidnapped 6 of your friends/family members, tried repeatedly to get you killed as you tried to rescue them, basically try and steal your identity as well, and all on your birthday, and all because no one loved them, I don't think they are really deserving of any sympathy cause of the extreme things they did. That's why I never got the "Pac-Man is a jerk or sociopath" complaint from the OG. But otherwise great video as always!
I was hoping Nitro would re-tackle this when it got announced. Speaking of Bandai platforms I'd love to see Klonoa on the channel some time. Especially with Phantasy Reverie out now.
I didn't expect to see Tommy Tallarico stealing credits from someone on this video lmao. Also funny to see Joey Kuras there too, it's funny how one video about a sound effect can change how I perceive the credits from some old game hahhahh
You could adjust the camera in the maze stages in World 1 and 2, they just didn't mention it. I think it's on the R button. Making it clearer in RePac was a massive improvement regardless lol
Back in the Pac-Man World 3 review, I left a comment that mentioned how cool it would be if the original Pac-Man World got a remake, little did I know how gracefully that comment would age. And I am still very happy that platformers have become more common again, because it is still my favorite genre, and who knows, we might get a Pac-Man World 2 remake down the road, or a remake of another obscure platformer that people remember fondly. Overall, 2022 has been a great year for platformers, and who knows how crazy 2023 will be.
Your ability to be balanced and grounded makes you one of the best reviewers on TH-cam. ACTUAL detailed measured analysis. You can do in 30 minutes what some people can't do in hours.
fr, i like long form content since i can put it in the background while doing stuff but james' content is short & concise enough to keep me fully engaged AND goes in depth with his analysis & perspective of it. that's what i like most about his videos
I mean probably most people weren't expecting a remake of Spongebob: Battle For Bikini Bottom, but we got it, and probably from the success of remaking what is debatably an average platformer, might have fueled the interest in remaking other obscure/non-big platforming titles such as Kao the Kangaroo and Pac-Man World.
I think bfbb was, in part, due to the speedrun community around it (it started as just a group of friends, and got all the way to gdq! Very cool story imo) Just a cool time to be alive, wonder what else will be coming back
The spongebob platformer became popular because it was completely ridden with bugs which made it really fun (and funny) to speedrun. That's why a community developed around it. The problem is, the remake fixed the bugs, so it's now just a kind of decent but not amazing platformer. I had fun with it though. I buy every 3D platformer I can because I miss that era of games and I'm glad they're making a comeback.
THANK YOU for putting Madotsuki at 24:45 . I was thinking where I've heard this song before and you putting gobou's lil' animation there really helped.
The 765 references are actually a Namco staple since it's based on Japanese wordplay called goroawase. Essentially the numbers 7-6-5 can be read as "na-mu-ko" so it's a cheeky little reference to the company whenever they use it, lol.
The extra lives are pretty overkill combined with the weird lack of a drop shadow, but it is a real interesting reinterpretation. It's far less physics-driven compared to the original, but ends up being much tighter a game in the process.
I must correct you on one thing: 23:21 it doesn't exactly reuse the same soundtrack, in fact, half of the OST uses the original uncompressed tracks, while the other half tried to recreate ("remixed") the original tracks making them sound more compressed than the original ones. (I made a mod to revert this change on PC if someone is interested, using the Original Sound Version tracks)
24:33 This game's soundtrack is amazing but I feel like I should point out that the melody that Pac-Man World uses is actually from Ms. Pac-Man. In fact most of the soundtrack uses more from Ms. Pac-Man than it does from regular Pac-Man. the title screen music is even mostly the Act 1 intermission theme from Ms. Pac-Man. I'm really surprised they kept it considering they don't want anyone to remember Ms. Pac-Man
The level you’re talking about at 19:41 gave me such a headache. I remember one jump specifically where a floating coffin is moving back and forth with the short end facing towards you on a ledge, that jump was so difficult because of the camera angle and shadow. Very humiliating when the “wanna play on easy mode?” message pops up because I can’t make a routine jump
I remember the first time I walked into my local arcade in 1982 and played Pac-Mom for the first time. Greatest arcade game of all time! Another game I have huge nostalgia for is Pac-Mom Maze Madness on the N64 - such fond memories!
I personally didn't think it was a dick move for pacman to eat orson at the end, like they did kidnap his entire family, like what would YOU do if you were in the same situation.
On his 20TH BIRTHDAY (or anniversary) by the way I don't blame him for doing that to Orson Yeah I would be pissed off too if that happened to me and have to go travel to a far far away Island and go through hell getting my family back and avoid getting killed or executed Yeah I would definitely do the same too
So I wasn't crazy when I struggled with the last world due to Pac Man's cast shadow being all over the place. I thought it was depth perception because I lost so many lives on those damn coffin to coffin jumps.
The whole time I was listening to Buccaneer Beach I couldn't stop thinking of dancing Madotsuki, so I lost my shit when she popped in in the corner there. Very nice touch!
I think the entire "Where's Ms. Pac-Man!?" section of this video at 5:25 was actually really interesting and informative. Growing up I used to play one of those mini portable home arcade cabinet versions of Ms. Pac Man that we still have to this day. I realize now that I should probably treasure it and keep it safe as her character really does seem to be getting retconned from existence. I didn't even realize this was a thing. Thanks for teaching me something, and, as always, great job on this video. Love your work James, you're one of my favorites!
765 is a goroawase number where some numbers can be pronounced in certain ways in multiple forms of Japanese, where you can form some fun wordplays by yourself. In this case, 765 stands for Na (Nana or 7 in Kunyomi), Mu (6 in Onyomi), Ko (5 or Go in Onyomi), which forms Na-Mu-Ko (Namco). 765 also appears a lot in Namco games. The first idol agency you get to play in The IDOLM@STER series is called 765 production.
Really want to see Nitro Rad look at Klonoa someday. On the concept of lives, I think they're best handled when the player is given a fixed number of tries for every individual stage, like in Megaman X8 more recently Freedom Planet 2. In the latter, finishing without losing any lives gives you bonus crystals which are necessary to buy things. I prefer this method to games that have infinite lives because I find that those tend to focus on shorter challenges like Celeste or Super Meat Boy, rarely incentivising you to learn longer levels like a classic Megaman game would.
goddd im so hyped for that game, i hate the rabbids but ill get it for rayman lol. i hope james does cover it but idk if he's really ever covered anything rabbids related
DID YOU KNOW I WAS THE *VERY FIRST AMERICAN* TO WORK ON PACMAN THAT'S RIGHT I RECORDED THE REV SOUND WITH MY OWN SHOES THAT'S ME RUNNING REALLY FAST THAT SOUND IS COOL BUT IT MAKES ME WANNA PEE AT NIGHT MY MOM IS VERY PROUD
Now that is how you get revenge. Selling Mrs. Pacman to AtGames is just so evil and I love it. Like, if he wasn't trying to screw over Namco for all the crap he had to deal with, then I'd be surprised.
I love how the example of music that you used in 24:33 is not from Pac-Man BUT ACTUALLY from the Ms. Pac-Man arcade jingle whenever you start a round lol
I was wondering if you'd ever look at Creepy Castle on Steam. It's a VERY unique RPG side-scroller, that never got the attention it deserves. Mainly due to it being published by the infamous Nicalis inc.
The Krome keeper fight in re-pac actually is based off of concept art for the original with the conveyer belts! Look up the original game's concept art, specifically the art for the Krome keeper fight, and you'll see what I'm talking about!
This remake came out of nowhere for me, though the history of Ms. Pac-Man does explain some of it. Who knows, maybe we will get more remakes in the future for the other titles.
Heres a tip from when i played the game: You don't to only rev to go up inclines. You can repeatedly butt bounce up them and it's helpful for when there's a cliff at the top.
The recurring 7650 score is actually a silly japanese pun: with how japanese numbers work, you can pronounce 765 as "na-mu-ko", so 765 (and multiples of it) shows up in a lot of Namco games.
Thank you very much for another well-made video, James! Very entertaining! I'm always happy to see your videos, even if I have never heard of the game. Keep up the great work!
I really did enjoyed this remake that Nanco did. Despite its flaws they did a good job. Now I know the true origins of why Ms Pac-Man isn’t in the game anymore. I was very curious that why they changed her appearance and her name like that, but now I know. It’s sad to say that we won’t see Ms Pac-Man.
Great review! It was really interesting to see the changes made in this remake, and I think you did a good job of capturing all the small differences in the gameplay. I am honestly surprised Namco acknowledged Pac-Man World at all, but it would be cool if this leads to a Pac Man World 2 remake too. Justice for Ms. Pac-Man though.
I remember when I first heard of this remake and even when I bought it, one thought at the front of my mind was "what's James gonna think?", since I remember following the Pac-Man World series reviews pretty closely back in college. Then I saw this video on the front page; full circle at last! :D
Another one of those games where, when I saw it's reveal, I immediately looked forward to the eventual NitroRad video on it. I really enjoyed my time with a Pac-Man World demo back in the day, so this game has had me somewhat tempted. 5:20 - I'm surprised you didn't know of this. It's a fascinating case really and the creation of Pac-Mom is interesting in seeing a purely Namco made take on a Ms Pac-Man (although they've had prior female Pac-characters of their own as well such as Pac-Marie). Really cool getting the brief history lesson here as well though and the Luigi replaced by Chris joke was brilliant. 11:54 - Great quick examples and comparisons between the original and remake. It's what I expected from this review and I'm pleased to see. You also thoroughly explain this game for people who might not have known the original which is neat to see. 18:40 - I wouldn't thought realistic shadows over gameplay mechanic would have been a needed emphasis when making a cartoony platformer but I guess they have to show off their realistic shadow creation in a... Pac-Man game. Great explanation of the benefit to those simple but clear shadows in such games.
24:14 To be fair Namco is kinda guilty for that too if you ever get to the Pac-man stuff they like to hide in Ridge Racer. Also, I like the detail where the old shit ending that makes Pacman look like a sociopath is received when you, well, deserve it. As you ignored all your friends and family to go beat up Tac-man. Like a sociopath. Nice touch.
Love me some Pac Man World. This remake has some strange omissions and downsides but I was very content with playing it. I can't wait to see a World 2 remix.

im really glad this is such a well done remake. my initial reaction was “oh they’re definitely gonna fuck this up” but seeing they actually managed to fix the game’s biggest issues really makes me happy.
Well yeah, but it kind of came at the cost of new problems that weren't in the original like the music and platforming.
I'd still say that the remake is better, with the better bosses, tighter controls and overall small details.
XD
I never played the original, so it was nice getting this remake. It was a fun little game!

I'm also a big fan of him, especially the zany antics he and WaKris are always up to!

765 easter egg is mainly because in japan using a pun system you say the numbers as Na Mu Ko. Namco.
It is also used in Idolmaster for the main company you usually work for in the series 765 productions and pronounced Namuko Productions and referenced in smaller ways with tekken and ace combat as well
And. Since you mentioned that a Japanese company handled the remake, they would have known what 765 would have mean to Namco, while the first American developer would never think too much about Seven Six Five
Guess that's why June 9th is Rockman Day - if you sound out the Japanese words for 6 and 9 it sounds kinda like "Rock".
I learned that from, intriguingly, The Idolm@ster. They have A production company named 765pro.

24:44 Glad I'm not the only one who will never be able to disassociate the 1st level theme of this game from that Gobou animation.
I am glad Namco is using their resources to give love to some more forgotten series. Having both this and Klonoa Remastered have really made me happy
I was going to say, it's wild hearing him reference Tallarico a couple of months before hbomberguy's "roblox_oof" video came out
I’m glad PAC Man world got a 3d remake. PAC man is just one of those icons that deserve a lot of love

Watching your World Trilogy reviews is one of my favorite things to do on your channel
I never had the chance to play the Original Pac-Man World game but I plan on getting Re Pac
But otherwise great video as always!
plus, it seemed to be like a reply when orson said ''nobody loves a ghost...'' pacman was all like ''well i do!'' and ate orson.
Lack of love does make people do extreme shit ig
I was hoping Nitro would re-tackle this when it got announced. Speaking of Bandai platforms I'd love to see Klonoa on the channel some time. Especially with Phantasy Reverie out now.
I'd also like to point out how it's funny that they literally gave Pac-Man Klonoa's flutter hover in this remake.
I was hoping for this to be made! YES! The pac is indeed back and better than ever
Loved the musical transition when you mentioned Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness
Fingers crossed they ever remake it.

Where- WHERE?!
Very cool story imo)
Just a cool time to be alive, wonder what else will be coming back
The spongebob platformer became popular because it was completely ridden with bugs which made it really fun (and funny) to speedrun. That's why a community developed around it. The problem is, the remake fixed the bugs, so it's now just a kind of decent but not amazing platformer. I had fun with it though. I buy every 3D platformer I can because I miss that era of games and I'm glad they're making a comeback.

The first level theme isn't based on the original Pacman jingle, its actually based on the jingle from [REDACTED]
Mrs pacman is it?
THANK YOU for putting Madotsuki at 24:45 . I was thinking where I've heard this song before and you putting gobou's lil' animation there really helped.
Wow, the timing on the bit about crediting people who worked under Tommy Tallarico came at a funny time
22:46 “can’t talk about Ms. Pac-Man” joke, followed by the music from the first level of Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness. 😂😂
I was glued to the screen while Nitro Rad was explaining the pacman legal dispute, he makes these pieces of trivia so interesting haha
The orange brother chris joke got me chuckling more than youd think
31:06 OHH so *thats* why it's a victory animation for Pac-Man in Smash!
Always wondered the significance of that sign/number.
On his 20TH BIRTHDAY (or anniversary) by the way I don't blame him for doing that to Orson
Yeah I would be pissed off too if that happened to me and have to go travel to a far far away Island and go through hell getting my family back and avoid getting killed or executed
Yeah I would definitely do the same too
So I wasn't crazy when I struggled with the last world due to Pac Man's cast shadow being all over the place. I thought it was depth perception because I lost so many lives on those damn coffin to coffin jumps.
The whole time I was listening to Buccaneer Beach I couldn't stop thinking of dancing Madotsuki, so I lost my shit when she popped in in the corner there. Very nice touch!
I remember seeing your review of the original game back when it first dropped; time sure does fly, especially when things come full circle
I was thinking the exact same thing. Where have all the years gone?!
After watching h bomber guy and Kat’s video about the oof sound clip, “Tommy Tallarico” has become a trigger word for me
765 is a goroawase number where some numbers can be pronounced in certain ways in multiple forms of Japanese, where you can form some fun wordplays by yourself.
I just love that you used gobou's animation of Madotsuki dancing at 24:44 brings back good memories
25:10 I'm sure Tommy's mom is very proud of him XD
I swear Rad will make the best video ever when Mario Rabbids: Sparks of Hope ft Rayman comes out

Heres a tip from when i played the game:
You don't to only rev to go up inclines. You can repeatedly butt bounce up them and it's helpful for when there's a cliff at the top.
Thank you for revisiting Pac-Man World for the remake, your videos on the series were great.
When I heard him mention Tommy.... my eyes freakin widened. If you know... you know. 😨

If there’s a Steam version, people could make a mod to return the dance or Ms. Pac-Man(regardless if AT Games now have her).
There is a Steam version.
@@surrealbrain4227 I watched the further into the video and realized it
24:14 To be fair Namco is kinda guilty for that too if you ever get to the Pac-man stuff they like to hide in Ridge Racer.
Also, I like the detail where the old shit ending that makes Pacman look like a sociopath is received when you, well, deserve it. As you ignored all your friends and family to go beat up Tac-man. Like a sociopath. Nice touch.
7650 is also a pun. Apparently, “765” in Japanese can be pronounced “Namuko”, so it’s a reference to Namco.
I really loved this review. It truly felt like you put all your heart into talking about every single detail in this game.
Love me some Pac Man World. This remake has some strange omissions and downsides but I was very content with playing it. I can't wait to see a World 2 remix.
