I'm 23 and I've lived in Birmingham for almost 16 years and My house is about 15 minutes from Selly Oak. And I've never felt endangered or been in a situation of danger in my numerous journey's to Selly Oak. But like any city you do need a good level of security. A recommendation would be to build a police station in the area or move a police station either Harbourne or Borunville in towards the Sell Oak area.
I was born in selly oak and the place has turned into a shit hole . Locals have been driven out and landlords moved in. The issue is when students get pissed up you make yourselves easy picking to be attacked.
I'm at UOB right now, in my first year, but not living down in Selly Oak as most first years don't (I will be next year tho). You don't actually have to live in Selly Oak! In your second and third years you can find other places further away from the uni to live in. I'm a female and I do like to walk down in Selly Oak; I don't feel too unsafe? However I walk next to the busy road when it is still light out, and I was raised in So things to keep in mind? - I would say think about what you're used to: city life? small town? and consider whether you think you would find the environment in Birmingham too alien or frightening for you to bear - Just keep a watchful eye at all times and stick to busy roads where there are more cars and people to help you! - Know that a lot of the time, cities and certain areas within them can gain a reputation merely because there is diversity there. This is sad but true. Of course there are crimes taking place in Birmingham, but ignorant people may exaggerate simply because there are ethnic shops in the area :/ - See if you can always try to go out with a friend or just someone so you are not alone, but this isn't always necessary - Plan your shopping (if you are self catered) so that you don't find yourself having to run out at night and fetch things - Overall don't leave windows open in the house/flat/your room (as I write this there are drunk students outside messing around right by my window) and always lock the doors, even to your own room - There are always buses and their helpful drivers going past if you feel unsafe Sorry for this being so long but I want to give you a full report of it! It'd be a shame to not come to Birmingham primarily because of its reputation, as I am having a great time here and its so wonderful and diverse!! In the city you maybe able to find the odd Turkish food shop and market, and the high muslim population here is a comfort :) there are great sports facilities and honestly its a great uni. With lockdown no one even goes out anyway and its not as unsafe as it may sound - there is a route through the campus from Selly Oak to other student accommodations so just run there if in doubt (its in the middle and helps you to not get lost!). I'm sure when things are up and running again even more students will be out. Anywhere you go will have its dangers; I for one would feel less safe walking around a small, empty rural area such as York, Bath or Exeter so Birmingham really isn't that bad, just beware of cold nights in Selly Oak. I've rambled on but feel free to ask any more questions if you need
@@hetaruux3624 Wow thank you so much for replying with this much detail!Birmingham is my first option as I have heard great things about it like you have mentioned,I'm just wondering where do most first years stay if you don't mind me asking and is there a drinking culture?thanks
@@mohammada3116 Honestly I don't mind ask me anything :) So I'm living in the Spinney in Prichatts park in a flat with 4 other girls, and I am not a drinker at all. I've got lucky as none of the girls in my flat are either! One for religious reasons and the others just aren't into it. You might have heard that the 'Vale' area of accommodation is the most popular, which I suppose it is as more students live there and its the 'party place' where most of the drinkers are. Prichatts park where I am now is relatively quiet at night its only the boys flat upstairs who get drunk on Fridays but they don't bother us. I'm not sure about what the accommodation down in Selly Oak is like sorry but from the way it looks it seems busy as its by a main road and the first year accommodation there is a huge tower block. You might not know this but you can actually choose your preferences when you apply for accommodation :D They give you the choice of mixed or same sex, quiet or not, and even non drinking or drinking which is great. Just try not to pick too many of these because it might cause for you to not get the place you want. You can't always guarantee that they will be able to meet these requests entirely but they try their best, and in my case I got what I wanted - check for this year but when I applied it was not a first come serve basis so you didn't feel as though you had to rush into applying for accommodation. I applied last minute and still got my choice of all girls. These options are available wherever you choose to live, but If you're not a drinker and don't like huge crowds of partying students like me then I recommend staying away from the Vale - if you are then flock there I guess haha. Also a girl transferred from the global community accommodation to our flat in the Spinney because she said some of the international students vandalise, drink and smoke... so maybe stay away from there too... also the showering facilities are no good there! So overall I would say there is a drinking culture amongst the "English English" (white middle class) students If you get me but like its nothing big. Then again lockdown helps stop that of course so its hard to say completely. I would say Prichatts park is the most quiet and non-drinking place to be (not even saying this out of bias or anything) just stay away from global community because the living quarters aren't very nice but sorry not sure if you're looking for self-catered or not. Wow that's another long message I just love to talk I guess sorry 😂 Feel free to ask anything more I clearly love this idek why and I'll try to make the replies shorter next time
Oh and you asked where most first years stay - so on the Uni website you can filter it down into only 1st year accommodation and you'll only be put with 1st years so don't worry about that :)
@@hetaruux3624 sorry for the late response and thank you so much for your help🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️appreciate the detail in ur response thank you seriously!!!one last question I promise hahah around when should I start applying for accommodation?thanks:)
"I never see security on campus" - Clearly don't spend much time on campus then. Selly oak a student area. That's because it is the cheapest area in close proximity to the uni. Naturally crime rates will be higher. There's a general sense of fear mongering on the fab n fresh group because every week you hear of 5 or 6 incidents that have happened. That's an incident for maybe 6 out of the 24000 people on that group each week. Or 300 odd people a year. Also there is no big crime boost at the start of winter, it's just that each year a new lot of ex freshers move to selly for the first time and learn what living in the real world is like
You raise some valid points, but there's a pretty good number of that 24000 that no longer go to university of birmingham. Likewise there are people from other universities in there. There is a crime boost at the start of winter. Not only in Selly but nationwide. It's darker. The days are shorter. That gives a bigger window of opportunity for crime to take place.
