You’ll find nearly everything the Bible has to say about the end in the Book of Revelation: a mystifying prophecy filled with bizarre symbolism, violent imagery, mangled syntax, confounding contradictions, and very firm ideas about the horrors that await us all. But whether you understand the book as a literal description of what will soon come to pass, interpret it as a metaphorical expression of hope for those suffering now, or only recognize its highlights from pop culture, what you think Revelation reveals…is almost certainly wrong.

I am retired on a fixed income (poor) but I love your work and Dr. Ehrman's work. I can't sign up for the course, but can I ask a favor? Perhaps you can ask him something that has been bothering me a long time: How could Saul of Tarsus be a Roman citizen? Not that I believe the stories in Acts, but just how likely is that? And why would a learned Pharisee be a tent maker? Thanks for your work.

I have been following Dr Bart Ehrman since I found him in 2012. I would check out his audio books from the library. I have learned so much from him. At that time I had already left the church 12 years before. The things that I know about the Bible are not things that I knew as an average Christian. I know more things as an ex-believer than I ever would as a practicing Pentecostal believer who's every moment was spent in the church. Sunday morning service, Evening service, Young Peoples Night, Missionary Night, bible study and Sunday school. One would think that I would know the Bible backwards and forwards. What you know is what you are taught that is within your church. I say this to say, that the most basic and average believer knows very little about the Bible, it origins and the historical accounts and etc. They are NOT watching things like this or doing any diligent research to verify any of the accounts or meanings contained within those pages UNLESS you are starting to question the Bible, the church's teachings and etc. It is how I landed here with some questions when answered didn't make sense or couldn't make sense. None of this would have ever reached me in my echo chamber and if it did, I would allow the apologists to explain away those things and I would still be an active member 24 years later. Fundamentalists are much harder to reach, because they're not looking for, nor listening to anything that would make them take a closer look at the texts and the scriptures. I know this because I have NEVER heard any of the things I have heard and learned since leaving the church. This is not what is being preached or reaching the masses that practice Christianity.

I agree with you as an ex Baptist then turned Seventh Day Adventist…🙄 But the truth for me is I have witnessed God’s Devine presence in my life on so many occasions and in extreme circumstances that I can not deny His existence nor Jesus. For me, it’s so difficult to believe in God but see man’s fingerprints all over His word. I’ve really had to delve deep into my soul for Him and he’s most certainly there; guiding, loving and providing. The God of the Bible is NOT the God that I have come to know. The gnostic accounts are more aligned, for me anyway.

I agree with Martin Luther on this much: Revelation has NOTHING to do with the rest of the Bible and was a fever-dream from some esoteric thinking guy on an obscure island. Imagine how different everything would have been if Luther actually took it out of the Bible? All the "end times" stuff from protestants wouldn't have happened and politics would be very different as a result.

@@joecurran2811 THANK YOU!! the "Recommendations" that he makes in "The Jews and their Lies'" eerily reads like the checklist for Kristallnacht. Luther recommended 1) that Jewish rabbis, sages (and the males) should be taken out, humiliated and killed; 2) the Torah scrolls should be burned, the synagogues torched 3) Jewish women and children should be made to work in "concentrated labor" (his words) for xians to the "glory of christ". And WHY did Luther write this Anti-Semitic piece of filth? Because in his 20 year (!) campaign to convert the Jews to "Lutherism", the chief rabbi not only REFUSED to induce ANY of his community to convert to Luther's Xianity, but rather took the bold and audacious stance that if Luther chucked his Catholicism, why not go all the way and convert to Judaism; challenging Luther's "superiority". Jesus did talk about torture. He said it is better to cut off your own hand if it causes you to sin rather than have your entire body thrown into Hell fire. He also in a parable talked about a rich man who was suffering in Hell and had no water, and he cried out to Lazarus for help and water but it was said a great divide existed between the two of them that could not be crossed. If Jesus came and only said nice things, I wouldn't have any problems with him. The problems I have stem from him very much enforcing the existence of Hell and eternal suffering as the alternative to following him.

Bart Erhman's,early christianity and the battle of the scriptures lessons woke me up .Turned me on to the awarness of there being two gods.Which I was not aware of growing up in a Baptist church in North Carolina. Bart spoke about a group of Jewish people called the Ebonites who follow the laws of the creater god(yahweh)or (the eloheim) gods of the old testament, who was a god or gods of wrath and law ,who made laws to tough for his people to follow. And another group of people called the marcionites ,who believed there was another god an unknowable god who had no dealings with the world whatsoever, until he sent his son into the world to reveal the Good new and his father's existance.Which I would say was revealed to john the son of the zebedee family brother of James in the book the ,nag hammadi library's (secret book of John).Which talks about what jesus or the son of man revealed to his disciple John and his disciples including mary magdalene as well. The Father the mother and the only child, the son of the mother father .And the first ruler sophia's offspring yaldaboath, who called himself the jealous god of the old testament and the earth he created being his foot stoole, which was destroyed many times. Then he created many gods and emination of himself totaling twelve and yaldaboath being the thirteenth the chief ruler.which reminds me of the gods of Astrology. So the secret teaching revealed to those of spirit might prepare themselves when they leave this material universe back to their place of origin.Beyond that I could see no involvement in the material universe or this world by the father mother being that the teaching show the father was unknown .Adam being the first to come down and he was shown the way of asenstion thru secret knowledge. That my understanding of it so far. Then there is the origin of the world, nag hammadi and the reality of the rulers.

John (the Johaninne school) is Pauline in theology and gentile in origin. The name “John” was to pick a neutral party in the early pillars from Paul’s letter Galatians. Peter likely didn’t sit well with James or Paul (as we see in Galatians) and imo Paul and James had a bitter falling out. So “John” is the pillar who comes to Paul’s aid, using much of Paul’s teachings throughout the Gospel and the letters.

I say Jesus failed. I see no point in trying to gloss that. It goes to show, in my experience, that even a lot of critical scholars still have this residual reverence for Jesus that won't allow them to say anything that might sound judgemental or negative. They still see Jesus as sinless and asexual, pure in motivation, noble of purpose. They all seem to think he was self-possessed. That he had a plan and worked his plan. That he had a consistent and thought-out theology, etc. They still have a hard time seeing him as an authentic, messy human with messy thinking and selfish traits and unintended consequences. I know that Dr. Ehrman does NOT think Jesus got crucified on purpose but it's amazing how many critical scholars do.

Eternal torture is a lie. The wages of sin is death, it isn't being resurrected as a sort of undead creature to experience conscious eternal torture. The punishment for rejecting God and nonrepentance is to be literally left dead for eternity. Ironically, this is the very post-death fated nonexistence Steven Hawking, Carl Sagan, etc already believe in anyway. The stereotypical view of hell with pitchforked devils and chained is a Catholic Papacy-invented mythology that unfortunately has been passed on. Catholics were very fond of burning people alive and torturing them back in the day. That idea of hell simply isn't in the Bible any more than the rapture is (also a Catholic invention of a jesuit priest).

The best way to understand the Discourse is to notice that the disciples have made an incorrect, albeit understandable, assumption when they question Jesus-that the destruction of the temple and the city of Jerusalem is the end of the age and must be somehow associated with the coming of Christ in the clouds with great glory. But Jesus will correct this mistaken assumption and speak of two distinct events separated by an indeterminate period of time (this is characteristic of so-called Reformed amillennialism). The first event to occur is the destruction of the city and the temple, and includes the horrible suffering of A.D. 70, after which Israel will be cut off and left desolate. The second event of which Jesus speaks is the end of the age, when the Son of Man will return in final judgment.
The key, then, to interpret the passage correctly, is to look at the disciple’s questions and to see how Jesus answers them (in light of Daniel’s prophecy) so as to correct their misconception about the destruction of the temple and the end of the age being the same event. As we will see from Jesus' answers, these two complexes of events (Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension, followed by the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in A.D. 70, and then his second coming at the end of the age) are the redemptive-historical bookends of the interadvental age.But Jesus gives another sign, one which indicates these things extend beyond the destruction of Jerusalem into the present age. Says Jesus, the gospel must be preached to all nations before the end can come. Then talking of the church let's not confuse the Roman Catholic Church with the Church of Christ.

Accordingly, Solomon began to build the Lord's house "in the second day of the second month (April), in the fourth year of his reign " (2 Chron. 3.2), and finished it " in the month Bul (October), which is the eighth month. So, he was seven years in building it" (1 Kings 6.38). Here, if we reckon the years as months, all will harmonize, otherwise we will stumble upon insurmountable difficulty. For, if Solomon commenced to build the Lord's house " in the second day of the second month Zif (April), and finished it in the month Bul, which is the eighth month " (October), he certainly did not work even or entire years. But if we call these years, months, all difficulty will vanish. The second month, then, will be the fourth, counting from January, of Solomon's reign, because the Sun is born, i.e., begins his reign, from the winter solstice. This house of the Lord was built during, and corresponds with, the seven months of the Creation. It also corresponds to the seven degrees of the Royal Arch mason. But in the building of his own house, Solomon occupied thirteen years (the thirteen lunar months), and these thirteen years (lunar months) began with Solomon's reign, and ended with the year. Solomon's house was the same as the Tabernacle, which, says Josephus, "was made in way of representation and imitation of the universe," or of the year. (Antiq., B. 3, cap. 7.)
The astronomy of the Bible being that of the Ptolemaic system, the reader will naturally, of course, be led to look for epicycles, i.e., small circles so placed that their centers move in and about the circumference of a great circle; and sure enough, here they are in 1 Kings 6.5: "And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about (i.e., circular chambers), against the walls of the house round about (i.e., of the circular house), both of the temple and the oracle," i.e., the holy of holies. We also find such described in Ezekiel 40.16, and 41.16, but much more complex. The number of these epicycles varied according to the fancy of the author. Thus, when the number had risen to thirty-four, Aristotle added twenty-two more. This number not being adequate, additions were still made until the system became so cumbrous that it fell of its own weight, and gave place to the Copernican, which we call the true system

I agree that most Christians have a distorted/unbalanced/incomplete view of Jesus. But the ‘nice’ Jesus and ‘mean’ Jesus are not contradictory portrayals; they are complementary, two aspects of a whole. If you read the whole Bible, it’s easy to see that God has a consistent pattern throughout: 1. He creates/saves by grace through faith; 2. He teaches good and evil, requiring us to choose good; 3. He gives us much time and many chances to try, fail and try again, but eventually judges us-rewarding according to our works, good for good, bad for bad. (That pattern can be seen with Adam and Eve, with Israel in Exodus and on, and for both Jew and Gentile).
In (Luke 4:18-21) Jesus quotes (Isaiah 61:1-2) but cuts it short (“…AND…” and What?). As he said, he fulfilled as much as he read. His unnatural cliffhanging stop seems designed to point to part two, his second coming, as described in Revelation, a time of vengeance. Also in (John 8:26), we see that Jesus has unfinished business in terms of judgement-but he only now speaks what the Father directs him to speak.
Mission 1: Warn and give a chance to repent and be saved from judgement.
    Mission 2: Judgement (etc).

      (c) CHILDREN: SPIRITUAL DESCENDANTS.
      (d) The so-called deep secrets of Satan: literally, “the deep things of Satan,” a scathing reference to the perverse teaching of the Nicolaitans (Rev 2:15).

Then, check that the Exodus in scripture is the same today as it was 5th century BCE, which disproves the apologists that say scripture was corrupted. (The quran also says the word of God is incorruptible.)

It's amazing that Revelation made into the canon mainly because it puts words into the mouth of Jesus that he is going to say in the future. That alone should have been good enough reason for early Christian leaders to reject it.

Generally Bart is trying to genuinely understand what the authors meant when writing each passage, taking into account that each author had different ideas and intentions.
From what I understand of Jordan Peterson- he generally connects most things to his idea that there's an eternal battle between chaos and order, and these ancient texts are filled with useful "truths" about how to life our lives.
I only say "truths" like that because Jordan Peterson has a very unique way of defining what is "true" as what is "useful".
I found Jordan Peterson very helpful at one point in my life, but eventually I reached a point where his methods for drawing conclusions became obvious and once I noticed I couldn't unsee. It's basically the whole thing about useful things being true. Personally, the truth is what corresponds with reality. That's how I define what is true. But under that definition, Jordan Peterson would probably have to call himself an atheist, and he definitely doesn't think that's useful, so 🤷‍♂️ under his definition, he is Christian because it's useful to be Christian. He has said all this stuff many times, God is a useful concept real in our minds as our highest ideal. I would call that imaginary, but he calls that true. Once I noticed this I couldn't listen to much of him without this methodology becoming apparent.

I just saw Chris Keith say this the other day when asked how he balances Christianity with scholarship - “We don’t believe in the Bible!”. And somehow even I as someone who has _always_ thought ideas like Biblical inerrancy are flat out insane had never even thought of it like that, and I don’t think many people, Christian or not, do.

@@wilfredmancy JESUS - FATHER AND SON AT THE SAME TIME ?
Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus Christ, Christ Jesus, the Christ, the Spirit of God, Jehovah Gods? Are they all the same Things?
The answer to that is - Yes and no: what follows explains why
Jesus Christ is rarely mentioned in the four Go-spells, therein Jesus is predominantly referred to as Jesus of Nazareth (the man):
Jesus Christ is mentioned twice in M’t 1: 1, as a “Generation of Jesus Christ”, in other words, what is being generated; then in M’t 1: 20 as what is born of a Holy Ghost.
Jesus Christ is mentioned once in M’r 1: 1 in relation to “the gospel of Jesus Christ”.
Jesus Christ is referred to three times in John, in 1: 17 as “The truth that came from Jesus Christ, in 17: 3 wherewith Jesus speaks of Jesus Christ in the third person singular as what is “sent from God”, and in 20: 31 as what is “written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ”.
None of those instances actually call Jesus Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is not mentioned even once in the Book of Luke: not until the fifth Go-spell is Jesus called Jesus Christ, subsequent to Jesus being “approved of God” in Ac 2:22.
By now, one may suspect that perhaps Jesus is not the same Thing as Christ.
That suspicion is not without merit, whereas, Bible Dictionaries confirm that suspicion by listing Jesus and Christ separately.
In addition to that are several verses whereby Jesus refers to Christ in the third person singular, for instance, the following
"Jesus asked them, What think ye of Christ? Whose son is he?" M’t 22: 42.
“The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ;” Re 11: 15.
In the latter we see a comma in front of “and”, indicating two separate ideas, which pertain to four separate Things.
      The two ideas:
      1. A capitalized lower case “Lord”, according to standard English practice of capitalizing a word referring to a Deity or God: “Lord” is known to pertain to Jesus.
      2. “His Christ”. Who’s Christ is It? Well, “His” refers to God “fruit after his kind” Ge 1:11, “the Christ of God” Lu 9:20 “The Father of spirits” Nu 16:22, “the Father raiseth up the dead,” Joh 5: 21.
      The four separate Things:
1] the soul of Jesus the man “IN”
      2] the Thing called Christ “Apprehended of Christ” Ph’p 3: 12, “Prisoner of Christ” Ph’m 1: 9,
3] the Spirit of God whose abode is in Christ (“in it he had rested” Ge 2:3) but is now “in”
4] the body of Jesus (“To wit, that God was in Christ” II Co 5:19).
The former explains how this is possible - “I am in the Father, and the Father in me,” Joh 14:11; thus, the Spirit of God in the body of the man that was called Jesus of Nazareth, that Thing is now called Jesus Christ: the Thing in which the soul of Jesus the man is in and from whence the Spirit came is “Christ Jesus”.
“God hath made that same Jesus,,, both Lord and Christ.” Ac 2: 37, thereafter, subsequent to that man receiving a Holy Ghost from the Father in Ac 2: 33,
“That same Jesus” is referred to as “Jesus Christ”.
“He (LORD) had restored a dead body to life,” 2 Ki 8:5
That is the difference between the man Jesus of Nazareth, the Spirit called God that abides in the Device/Thing called Christ, the Spirit of God in the body of the man Jesus called Jesus Christ, and “the Christ of God” with the soul of the man Jesus in It called Christ Jesus.
Moreover, “Jesus Christ” is a title which refers to the combination of an otherworldly entity, inside the body of a man, that is the only way Jesus the man is the Christ.
This is reality, Jesus was a man that was used as a host body, an Avatar for a Spirit of the “LORD of Hosts”, hence some Jesus’ titles alluding to that scenario -
“Host of the LORD” Jos 5: 14,
      “Heavenly Host” Lu 2:13,
“God manifest in the flesh” 1 Ti 3: 16, and, this peculiar title: “A stranger and an Alien” Ps 69: 8 (an appropriate title if one is to comprehend an alien spirit inside the body of a man).
Jehovah Gods/Jehovah Elohim, the Spirits in the Christ, the Gods, “all that are in Christ“ 1Pe 5:14
      Behold!
      “They that use this World” 1 Co 7: 31;
      “they are not of the world,” Joh 17: 14;

It comes down to interpretation of the original language. I presume your referring to the use of the word “evil”. Here are the passages in the NKJV version.
6 That they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting
That there is none besides Me.
      I am the Lord, and there is no other;
7 I form the light and create darkness,
      I make peace and create calamity;
I, the Lord, do all these things.’
these verses show the contrast between what provides and what you get when he withdraws his provision. Calamity is a better(and possible) interpretation of the Hebrew here.

    • @nathanmorgan3647
      @nathanmorgan3647 ปีที่แล้ว

The Hebrew word translated as “evil” (ra‘) in the King James Version of Isaiah 45:7 has two applications in the Bible. The term can be used in the sense of moral evil, such as wickedness and sin (Matthew 12:35; Judges 3:12; Proverbs 8:13; 3 John 1:11), or it can refer to harmful natural events, calamity, misfortune, adversity, affliction, or disaster. It is in this second sense that Isaiah speaks, and his meaning is reflected in most modern Bible translations of Isaiah 45:7 (emphasis added): “I make success and create disaster” (HCSB); “I make well-being and create calamity” (ESV); “I send good times and bad times” (NLT).
This is the trouble with nonbelievers and 'scholars' who set out to disprove the scripture. They are not unbiased and will latch onto 'ahah gotcha now, you lying bastards' they come across.

Glad he is on my side, even for reasons that I do not always understand.
I understand that this guy’s historical knowledge and therefore the performed work are tremendous, but I also feel that he does not control well an elementary logic.
First point: his explanation on agnostic/atheist
    Believing:
I am a believer: I believe that “this” exists
I am agnostic: I do not believe that “this” exists
I am atheist: I believe that “this” does not exist
Of course if we believe that “it” does not exist, we consequently not believe that “it” exists. An atheist is agnostic.
Then saying (with Bart): “I am both atheist and agnostic” is not relevant.
Second point: asking like Bart: “how could he know?” is curious. Of course we could know. The question is not this one, even not what we know, but what we are speaking about. Just define what is God and the following things are easy.
    Knowing:
What about “this”? If “this” is defined or let say characterized sufficiently to highlight contradictions or impossibilities then we know that “this” is not possible, we know that it does not exist (as “defined”).
We do not ask to a subjective thing to be consistent, in particular we do not ask a belief to be well approached philosophically. But if we want to know (at least to learn) we need to define (at least characterize) what we are speaking about.
In the previous hypothesis every body knows so:
    - the atheist has then the right to say “I know” that “this” does not exist,
    - the agnostic becomes atheist,
    - the believer…1. changes his mind, or 2. goes into denial
Of course to be complete we should also consider the case that we have demonstrated that “this” exists. In this case (we know that “this” exists); the believer can then say: I know that “this” exists; the agnostic can make his mind and the atheist change his mind.
In this last hypothesis not only the constraint to define the “this” still exists but is tremendously more demanding since we need to define exhaustively the “this” this time because everything must be true. (Btw we see that “a negative” is much easier to demonstrate, there is an English story pretending that demonstrating a negative is a fallacy, it is funny).
The third strange take is about the reason he gives for not believing in god. He highlights himself a lot of contradictions in the Old Testament (but, according to him, not believing in the Bible is no reason not to be Christian!!!???) and in the books of the New Testament, but this is not a reason for not believing (again!!!???). But cherry on the cake his “good” reason is because considering that “he cant accept the idea of a powerful and loving charge of this world given all the horrible suffering in it” and ”he just got to a point he does not believe that there is a god who is active in anyway at all in this world”.
So he does not accept the numerous contradictions as many evidences that there is no god but he considers as evidence the fact that a god should conform to the human moral (or to Bart moral as we prefer). If it proves something it is that this god is immoral and/or pervert, not that it does not exist.

@@Soneelicious as nobody knows, the such defined word is useless, we have already a word which is humans. Samething as for a gnostic. By opposition to an atheist that believes that there is no god (when using the relevant definition of the word not the "US" one).

Like the rest of the Bible, this is written on two levels for two different groups: those inside the church whose sense of self corresponds to the whole world, i.e., God (along with those who are desirous of and potentially open to it); and those who revel in their individuality and therefore will never be open to it. For the former, the wrath is that of a slain lamb, and the sword is that of truth, and therefore it's unconditional sacrificial love that is exalted and that does all the destroying; and the destroying is of individuality itself, which is done away within the larger sense of self that love creates. For the latter, because such talk is foolishness, and because the absence of a punishing god would free them to engage in even more self-seeking, and because they are such strong individuals that they can only imagine a god like themselves, they see what their egos fear and frankly need. The symbolism is plain enough. If you look at it and see encouragement to add to the truth of our mutual self-body by adding your own blood to the proof, the name of God is written on your forehead. If you only see a vindictive and punishing god, your own name is there. “…because they received not the truth that they might be saved…God shall send them strong delusion that they should believe a lie…”
When we read Revelation-which is the unveiling of the veil that covers the true God, which veil is the god imagined as an all-powerful individual and known as the god of this world-we are looking into a mirror and find ourselves, whether we are OF God or a mere man.
When we read it with the veil “untaken away”, we receive the “strong delusion. When we read it with it taken away, we are encouraged to transform the world by “filling up” the sacrifice of Christ by adding our own to those final vials; and with the Spirit and the Bride say “Come.”

This friend (we don’t talk about faith any more and just remain friends over other things) believes that people like Bart are “warped liberal scholars who were never Christians and don’t actually understand the Bible at all.” Which makes me sad, because he misses out on so much of the rich literary history of the Bible. He’s definitely one of those fundamentalists, who believes that there is no Christianity without believing the Bible, rejecting Big Bang cosmology & evolutionary theory, etc. He’s a wonderful guy in so many ways, but on this, he believes what he believes and seems to be incapable of questioning it. Yahweh was adopted (from the broader Levantine polytheism). Let that sink in.
YHWH Yahweh was just YHW Yaw on the Mt Ebal curse tablet. Oldest Yahweh inscription ever found.
End of the Baal Cycle he was Baal-Yaw. At the start of the Baal Cycle he was Baal-Yam.
Baal is a title meaning Lord. Yam means Sea. Yam was called the Twisting Serpent.
Sea Beasts are Yam Beasts and were called Lotan (biblical Leviathan) and seven-headed Tannin (who gets one of his heads fatally wounded; see Rev 13: 1-3). Yam (Sea) was a tyrant who got kicked out of Heaven (off Heavenly Mt Saphon) by the good Lord Hadad.
Don't confuse Baal-Hadad, who was from Ugarit and Aleppo, with the Lords of Sidon (where Jezebel was a Princess) and Tyre in the Jezebel vs Elijah story in the Bible.
Both Jezebel, who was representing the Lord or Lords of Sidon and Tyre, and Elijah, who was representing Yahwism from Edom and Seir (see Baalam's prophecies), were awful for Israel 🇮🇱.
Bronze Age Israel 🇮🇱 > Iron Age Israel 🇮🇱.
