    My idea of Sisko post-show.
    He returns to Cassidy and raises their child on Bajor. He has a farm to grow ingredients for his restaurant. He introduces Baseball to the Bajorans and creates a Bajoran World Series.
    Jake writes a book, "My Father: The Emissary".

    I don't know what inspired this event, but I'm definitely here for celebrating both Sisko and Avery Brooks while he's still around to hear it. Still an underrated actor, still a character which people are inclined to oversimplify, still my fave captain/commander/general space dude.

    There are (at least) a dozen episodes of DS9 that I consider not only some of the best stories told in the Star Trek canon, but some of the best television ever produced.
    “Nor the Battle to the Strong” - featuring Cirroc Lofton in a starring role - would hold up with some of the best episodes in M.A.S.H. ‘The Visitor’, ‘In the Pale Moonlight’, ‘Far Beyond the Stars’, “Trials and Tribble-ations’ and ‘Sacrifice of Angels’ demonstrate the amazing breadth and depth of the talent of the writers, actors and producers of this fine series.
    It is a television show worthy of commemorating every year - and celebrating the marvellous and myriad talents of Mr Avery Brooks.

    I"ve always imagined that Sisko's story "ends" with him being discovered on Bajor as having come back yesterday, living in the home he built to raise his baby with Kasidy (who obviously gets reports that there's activity on his land there to facilitate this). Excellent show! Thanks!

    DS9 is still the best Star Trek of all time imo. The way the story was told and the way the whole cast and crew worked, it was something so special that just went together perfectly. I first saw Avery in a show called Spencer when i was just knee high. i remember his powerful voice and Hawke and when he was a perfect cast as Ben. He can make you laugh or cry with just the shift in his voice and demeanor.

    This was such a great conversation. I appreciate Ira's insights about the character and the man who brought him to us. My mom and I were some of those fans who really were committed and tuned all the way in to DS9 from Day One. We definitely noticed some of the kinks that ended up being worked out, but we were patient because we love Star Trek. But, also, as Black Trekkies, it cannot be overstated how incredible and how impactful it was for us to see a Black man, a loving Black father, son, husband portrayed in such a rich and nuanced way on screen every week at the time. We were hooked! Top that with the facts that my uncle went to Oberlin with Avery AND we just so happen to share a birthday and we were having an absolute ball glued to the screen every week. I have rewatched the show a gazillion times, most recently with my kids. And I love it even more each time. So, it really makes me smile to see that The Sisko Day is a thing. 😁🖖🏾

    Rather than dark, I think the better term would be realistic. Actions had direct consequences. Especially once the Dominion War began, the stories evolved quickly and felt like real stakes were in play. For many fantastic episodes of TNG only a few ever felt like real danger existed for the characters.

    • @WhydoIsuddenlyhaveahandle
      @WhydoIsuddenlyhaveahandle ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes percisely! Instead of a futuristic exploration shown with a near perfect humanity, it is like what would it be like if the Star Trek characters had to deal with politics and conflict the way we do. Just great!

    Loved this show…always have been a huge Avery Brooks fan..since ‘Spencer for Hire’. He has been one of the most underrated actors. I wonder, how does Ira consume the today’s current events, specifically the issues of poverty, homelessness in San Francisco with the DS9 episode Past Tense? It’s seems so prophetic. I’m curious if he sees that connection and how he would explain it.

  • @captainbryce1
    @captainbryce1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What’s interesting about the Wesley/Picard dynamic (which Ira touched on) is that Picard was annoyed by Wesley basically throughout the first two seasons, and warmed up to him in later seasons. When Wesley put on the red ensign uniform, that’s when you can see that Picard respects him as an officer. Arguably Wesley’s best episode “Final Mission” Picard tells him how much trust and respect he has for Wesley. And then later in “The First Duty” (possibly the best Wesley centric episode) Picard expresses how disappointed he is with Wesley having “lied” to cover up an accident. Fans began to appreciate Wesley over time as Picard did. At least until his final appearance in “Journey’s End” which was abysmal. But Wesley was also more grown up and not really a kid at this point. Picard’s attitude towards young children remained uncomfortable throughout the entire series, see “Disaster”. I don’t even recall Picard ever having a scene with Alexander (Worf’s son).

    Great discussion. DS9 is my favorite ST show. Because this is Sisko day, I wanted to comment on one thing. I found the family dynamic of Benjamin, Jake, and Joseph to be believable and natural. I could picture them as 3 generations of a family. I liked bringing in the love of music, food, and baseball. It adds depth and is relatable.
    I may be in the minority here, but I liked the Bajoran Politics story lines. After the occupation, old issues ranging from rivalry to hatred resurfaced. I find it to be believable and well-done. For a real-life example from around the same time, look at the Yugoslavian Civil War after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Fast forward, look at the ethnic, religious, and sectarian violence in the Middle East.

    I do enjoy a chat with Ira; his stories, his insight and his opinions on the show.
    13:53 DS9 being darker show. Compared to what? - I'd say compared to TNG. TNG was a show that was literally brighter, the characters optimism and moral high ground was a little more on their sleeves and those darker episodes were spread more thinly across a broader canvas of the curiosities associated with exploration, anomaly of the week, comic relief stories and Data-centric stories. I think TNG had an air of innocence about it much of the time.
    DS9 on the other hand carried the weight of a sustained multi-season arc centred around a war, testing the values of our morally conscious, ethically heightened heroes to the limit... But that's what made the DS9 characters fascinating. DS9 explored what happens when you throw a bunch of saintly 24th century Roddenberry humans in to a sustained war; can they stand true to their values or will they faulter? - and as a result we were gifted some of the franchise's best episodes.
    25:24 "In the Pale Moonlight" - Fans had a problem with that episode? Really?? - It was one of the best episodes! 😀

    I wish I Picard 3, when they were lost and falling in the nebula, that when a bright appeared, it was revealed to be the return of Sisko. Then to have him help the story evolve, this truly bringing together all three shows TNG, DS9 and VOY. Sisko, I'm still keeping hope alive!

    Interesting to hear this happy ending for Sisko on Bajor. I wonder why we never got to see it on screen in the finale? The ending was very sad and dramatic for Sisko, Jake & Kassidy. Were they somehow expecting a season 8 arc? Also in the documentary where they pitch a season 8, Sisko only returns some 20 years later which I felt was odd considering Sisko's last words to Kassidy (Maybe a year, maybe yesterday) but ok that was a fictional current-day season 8 not a direct season sequel to season 7.

    Maybe it is just a personal thing, whether people think the show is somehow "dark" or not. You could also reframe this as a question: Is the world of DS9 a world that you would like to live in? My answer: YES! Same goes for maybe all other Star Trek shows up to ENT. After that, it is just pure dystopia.

    Regarding the question by Cirroc about how the Bajoran people would feel about Sisko going forward I'd note they would not have known what happened in the Fire Cave. Two died there and were never heard from again. Sisko immediately went to be with those in the wormhole and did not relay the story to Cassidy. As far as I know the tale of what happened in the Fire Cave was never told to anyone else in the show. The Kai may have been missed but her fate would have been unknown. After her encounter, Cassidy no doubt relayed where Sisko was but he never told her of happenings in the cave. One character that Brooks played that Cirroc didn't mention was when Avery Brooks played Jake as an old writer.

    Serious, but hopeful might be a good way to describe DS9. They didn't shy away from things like mental illness, government corruption, homelessness, racism, excessive capitalism, power, etc. But they brought a positive spin and a sense of action to many of these things. And of course, DS9 turned gender and racial stereotypes on their head. One of my all-time favorite shows. And Avery Brooks as Benny Russell is something you can't forget.

      Check out ‘Captains’ - a documentary movie produced in 2011 with Bill Shatner interviewing other Star Trek captains: Avery Brooks, Scott Bakula, Kate Mulgrew, Chris Pine and Patrick Stewart.

    Its sad Avery doesn't get respect while Kate "Bully" Mulgrew gets voice acting jobs for that Star Trek cartoon

    19:15 I didn't particularly care for the Bajoran politics stories either. Tho that had nothing to do with his race.

    I don't care how many people disagree with me. Captain Sisco (Avery Brooks) was the sexiest character on DS9. Even sexier than Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), by miles. Maybe even light years. Dr. Bashir was great to look at because Siddig is absolutely a physicaly beautiful man, this is true. But, Captain Sisco becomes the focus because Avery Brooks brought a classy sexiness to his character that Siddig was unable to achieve with Dr. Bashir.

    Why was it "necessary" to kill the Sisko character on the last show? He was a newlywed and had a baby on the way. I can't think of any of the white captains who the writers killed off at the end of th series that they starred in. I think that it was a racist move by Paramount.

      He wasn’t killed off; he ascended (to be with the Prophets). Like Jesus, Muhammad and the Buddha - a suitable ending for the Emissary.
      In the new Star Trek comic series, published last year, Sisko stayed with the Prophets for three years, and then was sent back to Bajor, to help the people there deal with another crisis.

      @Noel Leggett I saw the "Prophets" do a lot of things on DS9, but I never saw them give a new body to a human who fell into a pit of fire, as Sisko did while fighting with Dukat. They did a search for Sisko and couldn't find his life sign anywhere on the planet. So as far as script writing, Sisko was dead, his wife was a widow, and Jake and his unborn sibling were orphans. No more DS9. No chance for a DS9 movie franchise. The animated show that you referred to sounds excellent, for another type of show. But if Sisko isn't leading the space station, there is no Star Trek DS9. There was no logical reason that Sisko would leave his family for years just to be taught lessons from the prophets. For 7 years they never had any problems contacting Sisko when they wanted to. They could have taught him using the prophecy"orbs" to communicate telepathically. But dropping Sisko into a pit of fire, and sending Worf, O'Brian and a few other primary members of the show to different assignments totally destroyed any chance of a Star Trek DS9 movie franchise. And that was and is very disappointing.

      @@NickBusbeeFunkSchoolRadio I saw him start to fall. Then I saw him in the wormhole with the Prophets.
