Lately I’ve been trying to give my opponent credit for things they do and acknowledging the dice roll when I get hit in an RPS situation, and it’s really helping me improve faster.
It stops me from taking everything that goes wrong in a match as a sign I did something wrong, and lets me focus instead on the choices I’m making and the way I’m executing-things I actually have control over.
I think it helps especially when playing better players. I have a tendency to get frustrated with myself for not finding a path to victory, but the fact of the matter is you’ll lose a lot of interactions bc they’re playing on a higher level of the MU, and that’s fine!
It really clears out your headspace, it’s amazing. People should be saying “aww dangit” more often I think, they would be happier campers.

What worked for me is stopping for a sec after a ranked set and think about things that I did right and things I did wrong. One often overlooked thing as well is that sometimes as the player on offense it does work to throw out a completely stupid terrible option that one would do. Sometimes doing the dumbest thing ends up working cause your opponent is always thinking about the most optimal plays that you could do.

The funny thing is that even if you were *just* playing rock paper scissors... everybody knows that guy who is their rock paper scissors demon. And while it's ridiculous there's something deeply deflating about realising you're missing a strategy in something so abstract and simple-seeming. The coolest thing about fighting games at a high level to me is how different players develop wildly different frameworks for understanding the decisions they're making - and how those frameworks make them better or worse at understanding other players. Just the concept of "this player is my demon" is kind of psychologically thrilling, no?
Lab monsters and people who really dig into the details of the game end up like poker players who always play by the odds; getting good at the game isn't understanding what the numbers tell you. Getting good at the game is understanding what the numbers tell both you and the other player - and there's no way of getting good enough, in a well designed game, that you can remove that other player from the equation. Sooner or later you simply have to make a call, and there's no guaranteed safety there.

One of the most important things to keep in mind imo is that humans in general have major positive and negative recency bias so it's easy to get stuck in habits long-term like getting yourself in a high-low situation and doing high 85% of the time: even layering simple things like cr.L throw, immediate throw, cr.L cr.L throw, run up TK option to beat throw tech, delay DP to beat the opponent's DP, and so on. None of those options are particularly complicated but that's already 5 different things your opponent has to think about, but it's also 5 things that you have to think about and keep track of as well which is why running drills can be really beneficial.

  • @SingerOfW
    @SingerOfW หลายเดือนก่อน

The "Accounting for risk-reward" part is what I struggle with the most, as I often come up with the worst scenarios possible not just in fighting games, but in daily life as well. However, objectively speaking, most people would not do something that might cost them the round (unless they don't know how punishable this option is), so that takes a few potential outcomes off the list. Then there are the options that just aren't that scary, so maybe playing around them isn't worth the mental stack. Knowing the difference between these two and the actual optimal options takes time, so not being too hard on yourself for guessing wrong AND doing your research when things do go bad is going to pay off in the long run.

could you do one where you talk about guessing, when you have better offense than your opponent?
like, my guilty gear buddy and i are both bad, we do bad combos, but mine are slightly better. and because i tend to get higher reward for winning an interaction, i feel like i put less thought into the choices i make to get there. i just hold downback and occasionally press buttons, i get counterhit a lot, but i usually win anyway because when i guess right, i do more damage.
it super doesn't work when i play online against other people, but it's really hard to break habits when they work against the people you play against most...

Somewhat related, but I used to think people responding to a question like "What do I do here?" with "Just don't be there" was just trolling, but it's really solid advice. It's all about maximizing your offense and minimizing what your opponent can do. If Millia can knock you down and then throw out the disc, your best option is to keep that from happening to avoid the mix-up. Rush her down or zone her out. Always stay out of range of her sweep. it won't always work, but it's a way better way of looking at it than just throwing your hands up and declaring the game is random.

I once fought an Akuma in SFV that kept mashing 3framer on every wake up regardless of how on point my meaties were.
I got so annoyed by this that I once finished a match with a delayed CA on his wake up and it actually worked lmao
Seeing that Counter Hit notification after doing that kinda play is pure bliss

I have the mysterious power of ALWAYS guessing wrong when I'm in a corner (in or out). Even when I try to switch my habits mid-match or even mid-pressure, it doesn't work.
Pretty sure I constantly get matched against e-ESPers that somehow read my inputs before I even make them.
Man, FGC is full of amazing beings...

I can only imagine their reaction as they jump or mash something only to get hit by ken ex dp 😂

The worst version of this is when I (or an opponent) gets into a "gambling thing" mentality and just guesses instead of thinking about what the opponent's options are or what they are actually doing. Like a dope, I woke up lvl2 SA with gief trying to counter an Akuma meaty fireball. He backdashed out of range and never threw the fireball, and I thought "aw dangit".
Then the Akuma DI'd straight into my lvl2 while it was still active and ate a jackhammer to lose the match. You can't DI a SA. Just a total brain fart by him and I have never felt so bad about stealing a win.

I never guess wrong, I always perfectly predict the most optimal and logical thing my opponent could do, they are just of so much lower skill that they cannot think of that option and do something else, so they catch me off guard and that's why I always lose

The guessing part of fighting games never really bothered me. I would just think that if my opponent got a knockdown into an oki scenario on me, then that was their reward. You get to make your opponent suffer until they guess right. I found it easier to just avoid getting into those knockdown scenarios, i.e. win neutral lol
