My longest beard hair is named Cornelius, and if I lose him, I will do the same.
I have a mostly red beard, mostly wavy and wiry, but not Cornelius.
Cornelius is longer than the rest by at least an inch, very straight, and jet black.
      Cornelius is my boy.

I’d say 5-7 now that I follow Dan C teachings! I used to have good amount of breakage because I have a real dry face skin. The biggest factor I have found to help is 1 gal water a day. I thought no way water would make a difference. But took it as a challenge and was a game changer. Yes water is a game changer. Then next factor is butter at night. Another thing I was skeptical to try but followed Dans teachings and now I will never go to bed without one! Listen to this mans tips. It’s a night and day difference

Great video! The one tip I would add is don’t over do it with the boars hair brush. I use it once a day when styling my beard. If you use one multiple times a day over time it could contribute to excessive shedding.
I’m around the same as you, I probably lose 5-10 hairs a day that I know about.

Water is the biggest key in my opinion. I mentioned in my other comment that I have a harder time keeping my water intake up on the weekends just because I am out of my normal routine. Add in that I am typically drinking more alcohol on weekends when I'm not working and waking up early and it just compounds the dehydration. In the end that hydration is the #1 most important thing to maintaining a healthy beard!

Luckily, as a competitive athlete and health/fitness nerd, water, protein, and vitamins have never been an issue. However, up until about 3 weeks ago, I didn't put ANYTHING in my beard, except for for normal shampoo every night. My beard hair was always dry and brittle and didn't look very good so I kept trimming and shaving. Finding Dan and a few others have completely changed the game for me! Over the last few weeks, I have become a beard-a-holic and the change is irrefutable. Beard is now always soft, skin feels great, I smell way better, and I'm now motivated to actually go for a yeard!! Thanks for all the great content, Dan!

Great advice Dan, especially concerning the hydration and diet. In this day and age, people live on “fast foods” and neglect these two super important aspects of health. As a soldier we had it drilled into us to continually “drink water” and like you, were required to carry around a 1qt or 2qt canteen. And on another plus side for us all, especially those of us who easily put on weight, switching to a gallon of water and good, healthy eating, I can pretty much will guarantee you some weight loss and better lab results with the doc.
My bad beard habit is breakage due to continually fiddling with the left side by my ear……which caused a continual shorter and thinner side, meaning I’d have to then trim the right side to match. So I had to break my habit by continually being aware…..which has evened out now and is looking much more healthy.
Also, thanks for the nighttime suggestion of a beard butter versus oil. I was using a lighter oil at night (Creamo) and a heavier one during the day (Best Damn)……and again, great advice on the combs and brush! A++ bro!

@@DanCBearded I think, just like breaking any bad habit, it is just awareness of what you are doing to cause said problem. Then creating a new, healthy habit for the result you desire.
When my unit went to Afghanistan and we were issued drop-leg holsters (versus the hip holsters we wore in our normal protection jobs), I’d make my guys do “draw” drills almost daily, where they would change that physical habit of waist drawing, to the drop leg holster. I hope that example makes sense. Lol They say you have to do something 300 times or for several months to create the new muscle memory and form a new habit. So just a thought. 👍
      Thanks again! 🇺🇸

    FIXED MY EXCESS SHEDDING!!!
I'd like to share the experience I've had lately with shedding. I've been growing my beard now for about 7 months, without trimming or anything. ( Going got a YEARD) and for the last couple of months, I've noticed that the shedding increased from 4 to 5 a day to 14 to 18 a day.
And I was doing everything that I learned about how to treat and maintain your beard. I thought it might be the fact that we were going into winter, or that maybe I wasn't hydrating enough. I tried many different types of oils and balms but nothing seemed to work. I wasn't washing it too much. I tried co-washing, not using hot water using hot water, everything! I started getting desperate because my beard is already very patchy and weak. I went through three different dermatologist and finally I got an answer. Apparently if you already have an excessively oily skin you can excessively condition your beard and skin to the fact that you clog your pores and the hairs will start to fall out. In other words, I have what is known to be seborrheic dermatitis which means that my skin is naturally too oily and using too much beard oil or bomb or even conditioner was making the situation worse. The dermatologist suggested I use an anti-dandruff shampoo which consequently would really dry up my skin (not so much the beard hairs) and then after the shower I would only use a little bit of oil on the hairs but never near the skin.
    WHAT HAPPENED?
My skin and shedding went back to normal. Now I lose between 3 to 6 hairs a day depending on how many times I wash it or on the weather.
So I see a lot of videos out there talking about using beard oils and coconut oil and bombs if you are shedding too much but maybe you are shedding too much because you are using too much beard oil and it's not for your skin.
So my tip to everyone out there is this:
Go to dermatologist and make sure you don't have seborrheic dermatitis or any type of condition which makes your pores clog up.
Maybe you need to do what I do which is exactly the opposite: remove the excess oil!
I HOPE THIS COMMENT HELPS YOU GUYS HAVING THE SAME SITUATION I HAD.

Dan thank you for another amazing video
You have a beautiful family, a's a single father with custody, my boys are my life and their autism taught me to think outside the box. Now for the video, i have a unique situation with my beard loss, it's almost always just shedding accept twice a year. I know what's causing breakage twice a year and here's the situation. I can't believe I'm about to put this out in public, but here it is. I have an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis aand I need various infusions every month to keep me functioning and working full time to provide for my wonderful boys. Every six months it's a special chemo that targets my immune system. Yes I get very sick from it, and around people I need to wear a vogmask for two weeks around people because I have no immune system at that point. I will need to do this every 6 months for the rest of my life. That lifesaving vogmask causes serious breakage and I'm sure the chemo doesn't help. I am trying something new for my January chemo treatment. I just bought a silk beard hammock from Beard Gains. It's advertised purposes is to keep food out of the beard. I'm thinking another use could be to put it on under the vogmask to protect Walter, yes I named my beard as it has become a dear friend as the Multiple Sclerosis iis robbing me of mu favorite hobbies one by one, Walter has been there to comfort me. As such a good friend, I need to take the best care of him.

I was losing at least 20-30 beard hairs a day. I just started using beard oil for the past 2 years or so. I used to comb my beard dry or put in beard oil on a dry beard and lose 20+ beard hairs every time I would comb my beard. I been using a Kent 12T wide tooth comb the majority of the time and still got snags and pulled out a lot of beard hairs. I only tried 2 beard oils and finally bought some Bossman beard jelly. I only been using it for a week or so and it is the best stuff I have ever put into my beard. Now I only lose around 1-5 beard hairs every time I comb with the beard jelly in.

I realized it was just shedding and PHEW i felt so relieved!!!! I have been slacking for lack of a better word (lazy lol) with my water intake and you notice the increase in breakage almost instantly, within a day or so the hairs were a fallin😞 so back to the water and 🤞🏻i can maintain my intake. I shed about 10+ a day 6-8 on a good day 10+ on a bad day but i also shed alot of head hair and always have soo i think its normal for me? It's crazy that I found this video as soon as I was experiencing this. Very good info. I'm not seeing too many of my hairs have the white on the bottom. If I lose 4 or 5 hairs, probably 1 has the white; but I think that's because of how long it's been that my beard was pretty much "neglected". What caused me to want to use natural products and new oils was the fact that my hair was feeling super crunchy and dry even with the oil I was using at the time. My hairs were splitting. So I think that the breakage I'm seeing now is the breakage of the unhealthy strands I had a little over 3 weeks ago (right before I started using the good stuff). Especially since the strands I see in the sink are far shorter than the length I currently have. Thank you for the info Dan!!!

Great info 👍 I’d say about 5-10 sounds about right. I’ve never counted but about 5 during morning routine and same again during night routine. I don’t pull and tug my beard hairs but I do stroke it while I’m thinking and editing my films during the day so I probably lose a few in the day also. I’ve definitely found hairs in all rooms of the house 😆 I think hydration is key like you say, if I’m drinking too little water I do find I get more breakage than if I’m well hydrated. 👌

I would guess 8-10 hairs is average for me to find in the sink after my morning routine. Definitely get some breakage but mostly natural shedding. I notice more breakage on weekends and early in the week, and I believe this is because on the weekend I am out of my normal routine. I am not drinking tons of water like I do during the work week while at the office, and I am typically drinking more alcohol which obviously dehydrates, spending more time outside in the elements, etc. I take key vitamins daily, generally have a healthy diet, lots of water (at least during the work week, as mentioned), and I workout regularly and would consider myself to be a healthy person. I use quality beard products, beard oil every morning but only use in the evenings on occasion. I rarely ever use a balm or butter. Looks like my night time routine is probably something I could improve upon to see less breakage. Thanks for the tip!

Hey Jeff, old video here, but part of the suggestion is not supported by research?

    • @jeffsandersfit
      @jeffsandersfit ปีที่แล้ว

Proteins found in plants, mostly vegetables can supply an equal amounts of not only protein but nutrients that promote health and even beard growth. (Without the risks associated with animal products, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.)

    • @DanCBearded
      @DanCBearded  ปีที่แล้ว

@@jeffsandersfit To begin, but sure to read with a conversational tone from me, and never a confrontational tone. I know text can be read in many different ways, and often is based on the mood of the reader (guilty of that myself many times). I love these discussions and I love learning from them. I am NEVER married to my ideas, and I always approach with an open mind. So I would disagree with your statements, based on the research I have studied. And to be clear, that is totally fine to disagree with me. However, to say "is not supported by research" is not a fair statement, as I will prove that next. And again, totally fine to disagree and I am sure there is great research to back up your point as well.
Let's first establish my exact statement from the video: "gotta eat meat, get the protein from a meat. That really translates well to your beard."
Your statements: "Eating meat for protein is not supported by research." and "Proteins found in plants, mostly vegetables can supply an equal amounts of not only protein but nutrients that promote health and even beard growth."
      My points:
      1) I should not have started with the phrase "gotta eat meat". That was me talking in the flow of conveying knowledge and not fully articulating the thought and point I wanted to make. I do not believe everyone has to eat meat. I truly believe diet is person dependent. Different people need different things.
      2) Through my research and anecdotal (my sister was vegan for years, many friends were vegetarians, and I have tried different periods of no meat) evidence, I do believe meat protein is better than plant protein. The body uses it better and in different ways as compared to plant protein.
      3) " Animal protein, with its higher protein quality, is usually considered to be superior to plant protein for building muscle mass." and "The positive impact of animal protein on percent lean mass could be attributed to its protein quality." Key phrase being "protein QUALITY". Direct quotes from a peer review journal from 2021 on a study out of the National University of Singapore.
3a) LOADED study with a lot of interesting points that would even favor your views on many things (health risks for one, but only with red meat. I showed turkey, to be fair lol). Very interesting read! I also know the results are not overwhelming.
3b) This study is NOT about hair growth, hair health, or anything hair related. However, we know if your body is positively impacted, your beard will be as well. We also know for a FACT that protein is extremely important for hair growth.
All of that to say your correction statements to me were not fair. There IS research. We absolutely can have a debate and break down every detail of the research, and I am not saying my stance is 100% solid, but your counter is not either.
A lot to read haha sorry, but I love research. I truly did not learn much with either of my two master's degrees in education, but I did learn how to take an unbiased look at a topic and do research. Confirmation bias is a wild human trait and I try my best to be aware of it.
      Journal = www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7926405/

Funeral combs? "We're sorry for your loss. Here, have some MORE loss!"
But seriously an excellent and informative video. You're probably getting a lot of bearded brothers to sleep more easily tonight (which is good, since stress is another factor!)
If I'm honest, I wanna say around a dozen hairs personally by the time I'm ready to head out the door (or to the couch on a day off). It's tough to tell because my beard is that special kind of difficult and curly; it actually makes for a scarier sight because on the comb it looks like even more than there are!

My beard has lots of natural shedding, every day my beard drops at least 10 hairs with white bulbs on them when I comb the beard oil trough after the shower. Short while ago my beard got stuck in my coat zipper and that did hurt those hairs had black sticky bulbs thats bad news. breakage happens maybe a few times a month mostly in my mustache. The while bulbed hairs are quite intresting because they show a lot about the beard care from kinks from combing to wax buildup on the mustache. If my mustache hairs drop I check if I do use to much wax on it and addapt if needed. Also the dead hairs can really mess up a full beard shape because they curl way more and stick out a lot, because of that I would reccomend to comb daily because you want to lose that hair!

  • @flagg_entertainment

I probably lose around 15 hairs a day on average. Very rarely, I’ll only shed about 5. My longest hairs are the ones that tend to stick around. I do think my beard is pretty healthy as I have a nice morning and night routine. I have started drinking more water, but I can still do better

Great topic Dan C I’m glad you did this one as this is always a worry of mine, I know it’s natural and healthy to lose beard hairs but everyone always says they lose like 3-8 hairs. Me on the other hand in the shower during wash/co-wash/condition I lose around 12-15 hairs and after shower during grooming (oil, balm, comb through) I lose another 4-6, and they “tend” to be longer ones. Always scares me but I know it’ll be fine

I've noticed at different time's that mine sheds a lot of hairs and at other time's it's not many at all. Right now I am having a TON of breakage😭😭😭. I drink over a gallon of water every day but I have slacked on using my Belle Isle butter at night. I'm definitely going to start using it every night from now on. Dan, you answered my question on the livestream yesterday but I think my "slow" grow rate this month could be from of my breakage. I just ordered a ox horn comb yesterday so I will have a better fine tooth comb for when I use heat to try and get the curl out that my cpap mask causes every night. The next purchase needs to be a better blow dryer that has different heat selection. My wife's only has one temp with two different speeds. I try to keep it further away so I don't over heat. Thanks for the great tips and advice teach! Love ya brother and stay safe!✌

Michigan vs. The OSU- now that’s breakage indeed! 😏
Great advice and tips. I’ve upped my H2O game since you mentioned it in an earlier video. I start my day with 32 ozs of water before breakfast. I read that it wakes up the organs and kick starts the metabolism. I drink a lot of hot green tea during the day as well and include it in my daily gallon goal. 10 hairs lost per day on average.

On a good day, I loose around 10, but I typically lose around 15 every morning. My beard is starting to thin out a bit and I wasn't sure why until I watched this video. I'd never heard of "co-washing" and it never occurred to me to use a butter before bed. I'll certainly start this routine and I hope the boss starts to look as voluminous as it did initially. It's such a disheartening experience to see a sink full of beard hair. Do you suggest a specific butter and conditioner? I currently use Scotch & Porter butter, but I have not yet looked into a conditioner. From one high school teacher to another, your advice is much appreciated.

I do recommend conditioner, but I no longer recommend co-washing. Use the conditioner after a wash. That can really help!
