It was basically a pre-modern era in China, lawfully chaotic and politically unstable, with much fighting happening between the warlords in different provinces (killing people in a blink of an eye). Plus the guy hates her because of the family feud (he thought her family killed both his parents)...
@@sophiewang362 You can say that it was customary at a certain time for men to have the power to subjugate and mistreat women, but to say that they liked it to the point of falling in love with these men or putting themselves in front of the bullet so that they wouldn't be hit... It's the same as saying that slaves liked their masters and would put their lives at risk for them, even being whipped and violated just because it was "normal" at the time of slavery. Women who fall in love with their tormentors or who think it's normal are in need of urgent psychological and emotional help.
