This sad, sad story has always captured my attention. I've seen other videos covering this tragedy, but this one was so amazing. (I want to go there one day.) Your coverage of the Surf Ballroom was phenomenal. I am so glad you mentioned the Waylon Jennings connection to this fateful event, Andrea. You're so right...Waylon was, as you said, haunted by this horrific event, for the rest of his life, because of that comment.😒 EXCELLENT video of this horrible event, and the brilliant musicians, and pilot who perished. Thank you so very much, Andrea and Steven. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️🩹
Great video! I forgot that the ballroom was still in original condition. Nice how routine maintenance can preserve a building. As for the pilot: he had 127 hours in Beechcraft Bonanzas - adequate for the type of aircraft, but he was flying in IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) conditions, and wasn't instrument rated, and had failed his instrument checkride. So, while that plane did have a gyro horizon that worked differently than later types, he was still flying in conditions that he wasn't familiar with, and wasn't rated for. Bottom line, he had no business trying to fly that day.
@@PinInTheAtlas Corn is suppose to be knee high by the 4th of July! I've spent lots of time spent in cornfields! You can often hear the corn grow on a hot day! 1992 or 1993 we had a mid-June frost that killed all the corn in the low spots. 1986-1987 record heat! Good that you found a perfect weather day!
That is so sad. I was 3 years old at that time. That is so awesome that the SURF BALLROOM is preserved. Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family. Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. I won't be around for a while; I need to help my daughter after her surgery. Will catch up in 3 weeks. Stay safe and I will see you on your next adventure. 🥰👍👍👍👍👍(🌹🐞🦂🌵)
Buddy Holly was from Lubbock, Texas and back in 2002 I took a tour of the Buddy Holly Center which I really enjoyed. My sister lives in Iowa and she has been to the Surf Ballroom. One of my favorite musicians is Justin Hayward from The Moody Blues and he has said that Buddy had a huge influence on why he became a musician.
@@PinInTheAtlas Very sorry to hear about your brother passing away at such a young age. "Visions of Paradise" and "The Actor" are a couple of my favorite songs by The Moody Blues with Justin on lead vocals.
Oh wow, I was 17 when they crashed and I remember how broken up I was over their loss. It truly was a sad time for us teenagers. I do think they would have been super stars. This was a nice video to honor their memory.

Another pin to add to my ,All shook up life. Wow! Now I know why I don't like to fly. On Terra firma I stand a chance upon sudden impact, but 35,000 feet if something goes wrong not a chance. All in all we're just another brick in the wall. Another shadow of what we may have been. Another dream lost and still not found. Climbing the stairway to heaven. Good video!
My mom really loved this group of singers. It was more her era. She said it was a sad time when word reached her . But the good news is the music still plays on .
I hardly ever watch Pin in the Atlas videos for a very odd reason. The woman looks and sounds just like my last girlfriend who was also English. Her appearance, accent and mannerisms are almost identical to hers. I loved her and lost her to my great sorrow and regret. The woman in this video reminds me of how much I've lost and can never get back. I remember Richie Valens (Ricardo Valenzuela. His "Donna" was a great song and the Big Bopper (he was a Boxer...lol) and Buddy Holly). The plane they were flying in was a Beechcraft Bonanza in very bad weather at night. This was a good video. I'm being shadow blocked so I don't know if anyone sees this or not. Censorship is no bueno. I sent them $20 for coffee on paypal.

How cool is that oversized pair of glasses to indicate the right path to the crashsite.
It's a long way from the surf ballroom and a cornfield in Iowa to the nearest surfing beach. A very fur piece indeed.
