1995 Accord Brake Lights Always On

  • When you get under the dash, directly below the steering wheel, look up as you press the brake pedal a little.. The top part of the brake pedal arm will move showing you where the brake light switch and stopper locations are.. If you're having trouble getting the new stopper to snap in try this.. Once you get the new stopper in position, pointed end in hole and flat side against brake light switch button, release the brake pedal. The weight/force of the pedal closing may snap the stopper fully into position. And if you have someone to help you by pressing down on the brake pedal you don't need the stick.. I was by myself with a camera in one hand so I had to find some way to get clearance at the top.. Honda part # 46505-SA5-000.. Bought mine at local Honda dealership..

You sir, are awesome. Neighbor stopped by to let me know that my brake lights were on. I removed the fuse to shut them off while i researched and 15 minutes later, I found the 'bits of plastic' in the floor exactly where you said they would be and i believe I have found the solution that you provided. Thank you!

I have a 97 Accord and mines needed replacing…my husband attempted to do it but he’s so dang impatient so I checked TH-cam for directions and found this video. It’s a good thing my pack we bought came with two different shaped stoppers cause he dropped the first one and couldn’t find it 🙄🤦🏾‍♀️ I did exactly what you did and had it in in less than 10 minutes…start to finish. So thanks for the help. I’m low key a mechanic now 😎🤣

Turn the engine on .....One other trick i learnt with this Job is to turn the engine on. When you turn the engine on the brake booster comes on, then you can depress the brake further and easier . I didnt even need a stick to hold the brake down and could insert the grommit with one hand....wouldn't life would be so much easier though if we were octopus'....near perfect video, well done!

I replaced my "brake pedal switch bumper" today. Saw a very helpful comment on another video: Turn your engine on and this will allow you to depress your brake pedal far enough for your other hand to easily insert the plastic bumper. No need to depress brake light switch or use stick to depress brake pedal. Very easy, takes just a minute. You can do it without going upside down also. Great video here and elsewhere, very helpful to me and others. Thank you sir!

Hey, thanks for the video! The first night I noticed this problem I couldn't do anything except unhook my battery. Next day I called a mechanic and was told there was no way the stopper was the problem, and it's an electrical problem, a minimum of $100. Ha! Yeah, right. Today, I taped a penny in the spot with duct tape to go get the pack of 2 stoppers and run a few errands. Came back home, popped the plastic stopper in, and noticed my clutch one was missing also! Two birds with one stone! Thanks again!

Thank you! I am a 64-yr-old Texas grandmother who just did this successfully. Followed your instructions exactly EXCEPT I was having a hard time getting my old arthritic fingers to maneuver the little plug in place, even using the screwdriver. Thinking that just a tiny bit more space would help, I turned on the engine and re-situated my "stick" (I used an adjustable paint roller handle) and was able to get a tad more pressure on the brake pedal. Hot Damn! The plug slid in place without needing the screwdriver, and it was easy to snap it in tight. Just wish I'd started a little earlier. It only took about 20 minutes total, but the temp is already in the 90's. PS the hardest part was getting into position to do it haha.

+Diane Short Thanks for the "turning on the car idea." My boyfriend was having a problem trying to get enough room to install the plug, pressing down the brake as far as it would go. I read him your idea and he was skeptical, but less than five minutes later he came back in from the garage task completed! He was amazed at how much more the brake pedal could be pushed in just by turning on the engine.

UPDATE: I did it myself!! It took about 7 minutes. I used my cane to wedge with my seat and break peddle. I didn't go upside down in the seat like you did though. I got on my knees on the carport and stuck my head up under the dash. My kit came with 2 different parts. I couldn't get the one like you used to go into the hole so I used the black rubber one. I was ready to take the fuse out that went to the light so that my battery didn't run down. I'm glad that I could do it myself and not having to take it to a garage. I appreciate you & your video so much! ☺️

I went to some local Express Lube guys here in Mobile and they asked how I knew I had a brake light switch problem and i said ‘bc peanutbutterMan told me’. They said it would cost from $50-$200 and I gasped. Where is your car? I pointed and a 50-60 yr old got into the nasa position then turned it over to the younger guy when he saw how easy the fix was (mentoring). Tried to see what the guy was seeing and without bumping heads I wouldn’t so Im disappointed that I didnt do it myself but impressed you all have Diy! The guys would not take $$$$. I brought them back See Chocolates and tipped the guy. How nice was that!??

    3 tips for your viewers:
    1. Start the engine, the brake pedal will go down farther (due to engine vac in the brake booster)
    2. If you removed the 20amp fuse under the hood to turn the brake lights off, be sure to put it back in the right place or else your car wont shift out of park (dont ask me how I know this)
    3. Adv Auto wanted $8, I paid $4 at the dealer - brake pedal stop pad

This video is the best because you EXPLAINED and SHOWED the mechanism @3:01 to 3:57.
Rigger tip: USE A MIRROR +flashlight on the floor to see up into that tight space. Folded junk mail and cut out cardboard box is perfect for stuffing it in the gap. Use the paper first as is it is semi force and will hold the button DOWN for you as you SLIDE and STUFF the firmer cardboard into place.

I just replaced that little part ($4.50 at Honda parts counter) on my 1995 Civic coupe. This is the second time I've done this the last time was 12 years ago. It's a major PITA. I had to remove the driver seat and lie on my back while a second person used a length of 2 x 4 to push the brake pedal in just past its normal length of travel in order to allow enough clearance to snap that plastic stopper in place. The helper was also there to run around to the driver's side to help find the part after it got dropped three times and to assist in helping extricate the other guy out of a very cramped and awkward position.

Thanks for the video. I appreciate you not editing out the segment at 2:20-2:50 and 4:25-4:36. Gotta laugh at reality. Thank you for that. Thank you for the help too. My issue is with Nissan Frontier which does not have the luxury of a seat which folds back. Makes me laugh thinking about how I'm going to get in there. Maybe I could convince my neighbors 4th grader that it would be a fun project where he could make $20. Then again, my insurance probably would cover that idea. • @MarkMc70

This was really helpful (1997 Accord) but there are some really important things in the comments section I found that can make this a lot easier. 1-the car should be RUNNING because the brake pedal goes down WAY further with the help of the braking assist, and 2-just take the lower panel off (the only screw is behind the coin holder, then just pop it off) and you will have WAY MORE ROOM and no need to try to squeeze in upside down. That said, this video was the most helpful of the several I looked through. Thanks a million. Took only about 15 minutes w/ those two tips applied.

After watching how you did it, thinking it was easy I bought a rubber stopper and tried doing it my self. After an hour or more of being frustrated, with sweat all over the mat, being in that position under the steering wheel, It felt like I was scammed. That ain't easy, asked for my neighbors help to step on the pedal and point the flashlight in the right direction and I can see on his face he was trying all the time to stop laughing. Finally it went in and we both had a good laugh after.

I found this video after I had looked under the steering wheel area and found out what was missing because of the hole that the pin was passing through, but I'm happy to see that I figured it out; I feel accomplished hah! Side note, after looking at the entire design, it's clear that it was designed to fail and keep the customer coming back (the car in general) not just the breaks obviously, but this was pretty clear after looking and seeing that they could of simply *not* put a hole there for a pin, made it raised, or they could of used anything but plastic (we could think of a 100 different ways). My solution is to put a strong circular magnet of the same thickness and never replace it again. It's amazing to me how our focus in society has become technological inefficiency for money instead of efficiency for progress and reducing waste. Great video, thanks for sharing!

Worked perfectly - great vid!. I just had to:
    - get a 2ft bar to wedge the brake pad down against the rail for the seat
    - lie in the seat with feet up & head down
    - placed light against the gas pedal
    - used my right to depress the switch with a screwdriver - left to install the stop pad
    - after getting in into position, used the brake pedal to press the stop pad firmly into place

Thanks very much for making this video. It was much harder to get the new part in than I expected - probably 30 tries to get the point started into the brake pedal hole. My wife came out and used a stick to push super hard on the pedal and I got it started and used a screwdriver to get it in.

Hi, thanks for the video. 2 sided tape worked great for a quick fix.
For future readers, a few pointers
    1) instead of getting upside down in the floorboard, you can remove the foot panel. It's the access panel beneath the steering column and runs to the firewall. It just clips in, so, easy to remove.
    2) the other reader was dead on. Turn the car on to fully depress the brake.
    3) If you don't want to go to the dealer for the plug, use a plastic car panel clip. Just need to plug the hole.
Doing this, you can get on your knees next to the door, and go in head first. Plenty of room to work. Push the brake pedal, insert the clip, 30 sec repair.
And, yes, the initial diagnosis was perfect. Plastic pieces on the floor mat.

Great video! My girlfriend's 97 integra brake lights wouldn't turn off. Pieces of plastic stopper on the floor, just like you said! haha. Used a penny and some 2 sided tape until the new part comes later this week!

Thanks! This video got me going in the right direction. Cheap replacement stop pad from local auto part store fixed it. 20 minute job. Took photo for future reference. Removed wire connector, loosen jamb nut, removed switch, installed stop pad, replaced switch, adjust for proper fit (remember how much thread exposed on switch before removing - see your photo), tightened jamb nut. Done.

Dude I just have to tell you that I Love You!!! 😎 This is the best instructional video I've ever seen!! Every Single man I've ever known would've Never been able to complete & post this video because #1 they Always try to bend backwards in Front of the seat & well the rest of the entire process is nothing but cussing & sweating! 😆 and complaining of pain from twisted body parts for the rest of the week 🤦🏻‍♀️
A big high five to you man for showing em how it's done✋ not only that but you just took a load of my back by showing me that a piece is actually missing, I don't HAVE to replace the switch!!!!

Another video suggested to yank the fuse for the brake lights instead of unhooking battery. Seems there is a fuse puller inside the fuse box to help with this - fuse box may be under hood in box at back and top of engine compartment.

YOU ARE AWESOME - to painfully record this and explain this so well. Thank you. I am a single female, just started my own Driving School, use a 2008 Honda CRV and this broke today. UGH, so prayed please God show me how to fix it. Thank you and Cody the Car Guy for helping me.. This car is only 11 years old (it's not 20 years) I have lost my faith in HONDA. They used to make quality cars. I have already replaced on this 2008 car after owning for only 1.5 years, 2 front fans radiator/a.c. - right front axle - struts, now this. My 1989 Honda Civic was awesome!
