Goldsmith / Master Jeweler here: me and lapidary friends enjoyed your video. we laughed, not at you, but how it reminded us of our journey thru trial and error. i approve this video for those wanting to learn
I carved one a few years back from soap stone I did it by hand with no power tools I was so proud I soaked it in oil for about 5 min cleaned and polished when I have it to the girl she put it on it was perfect she made a fist with her hand and broke it into several pieces. I never made another one from soap stone thereafter. But until your video I never thought about a super glue coating I may try for a ring again
Made one with alabaster, had it perfectly polished. Put it on, cracked my knuckles to stress test it, it shattered immediately lol. made a wooden one instead
Thank you for the video, very insightful. In all sincerity I love how you directly mentioned and showed the mistakes you made and explained why that method didn't work etc. Thank you.
I know you probably did use one (because you sound like a smart chap), but respirators are a must when eorking with soapstone even more than other stones. That dust is nasty.
cut a cone of wood so that it can fit multiple ring sizes. drill a hole in the back that is CENTERED. Jam any hex shaft bit in there and glue it in. You now have a ring holder that can operate at lower speeds on a drill, safe for shatter prone materials. If you encounter slipping, just add a bit of double sided tape and press it down so its snug.
Great video! As for the finish, you can probably use polyurethane to seal the ring. I've used it myself on an acrylic ring, though I have yet to try it on stone, but I think you may come up with some good results.
Very cool. I've got a really cool piece of Sonoran Sunrise that I have been waiting to find something to do with. Excited to try this out. Thanks for the vid man
The ring broke off into a million pieces due to high heat generated from the dremel. You have to spray cold water to maintain the temperature of the stone as low as possible while spinning it. That goes for any stone. Its called wet sanding.
If you're gonna do that trick with superglue you need a thin almost watery kind not a gel superglue(gel doesn't behave the way you need it for that) and you're better off using a piece of cotton cloth not a q-tip because the q-tip is highly likely to leave fibers behind....still it looks great
I would have made a tiny hole in the center to fit a disk bit and then sand around on sand paper then make the central hole "at the end". What do you think about this?
There is a kit dremel put out that has a polishing compound in it. I haven't used it yet (was waiting to get the bits for my drill press). But after seeing this going to have to experiment with the various bits that came in that kit. Mineral oil and bees wax might be good polishing agents as well. Saw a guy use bees wax on a granite peace pipe. Looked pretty good. Keep experimenting.👍
It wasn't the speed it was the uneven heating of a stone xD.... Stones are full of pours and cracks set one in a fire it shatters dangerously you must slowly heat then let it rest & cool for 15-20 minutes
Look up certain rocks’ hardness on google, maybe try to stay around soapstone(6-6.5 I think?) I personally am going to experiment, and maybe I’ll have as many rings as jack sparrow
Hey nice job! Also if you want to try buffing with super glue, use thin super glue the kind thats like water. I belive your gorilla glue was too thick and instead of buffing caused it to look foggy?
I’m so thankful I found this!! This is so cool and almost exactly what I want to do!! Do you have any contact info I could ask some questions about what kind of tools I would need to try this on some minerals/rocks I have at home? I would greatly appreciate it!
I don't know about sealing, but I have heard you can use cerium oxide mixed with water (to create a slurry) on a felt dremel polishing bit or a soft rag to polish crystal or stone. What if you tried a clear polyurethane varnish gloss?
I use cerium oxide, a drill with a mixer on it, and old soup cans to sand my 3D prints. I just chuck them in the slurry fire up the drill an voila, never been easier. It might work for stone too.
I have collected few chunk of milky quartz from roadway rock , could it be made to ring? I mean it have lots of that pyramid shape like it can be broken if pulled 🤣
Video is good but finished product is very fragile and cant be wear except partying. i mean to say you cant do daily routine work after wearing this ring. thanks for making a nice video. Love from India.

You need to mention respiratory protection due to silica exposure - protect your lungs!
very interesting and very nice video Congratulations what material it is can you explain to me what material i can find it
He doesnt NEED to do anything.
If you don't wear it then your an idiot, and should not be doing this

Thanks for the detailed video , including the broken ring. Helps us newbies not give up :) also the ring turned out beautiful 😍 love it
soapstone is soft. For agate or anything in the quartz family you need stonecutter tools
As a new GEM Hunter vlogger I like this you tube channel More lesson to learn.

Nice ring dont give up on making your videos very detailed. I found your video because I wanted to see if it has been done before.
I like how you showed mistakes and u still powered on
please keep doing these! I love your commentary when doing these ahhaha
Crazy work!! incredible I love it thank you for sharing

Sealer for stone my friend. 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Nicholas the supper glue or CA as some call it. it takes multiple coats to build up. Nice work by the way.
Try water drip next time with your brill drill idea, the stone just got too hot maybe is why it shattered? Cool video thanks!
It's a nice looking ring....
I would wear it .....
Great video. I enjoy videos where people make do with what they have.
2:06 JERK!!!😆I actually looked at the video time!!!
I will post the items that would help u for next Time. That was awesome and thank u that gave me great ideas
With the C.A glue use 5 coats of medium then 5 coats of thin then sand with 380grit up to 1000grit
Then polish
Should come up like glass
I would have made a tiny hole in the center to fit a disk bit and then sand around on sand paper then make the central hole "at the end". What do you think about this?
You might be able to use the Dremel but have a small hole so it has more surface to dissipate the pressure.
Instead of glue I use clear gloss wood sealant for wood and leather work. might be good on stone

Any tips? Did it work out?
Hey just curious if this ring is still alive or if you have broken it?
You need do this in water to reduce amount of dust you might be breathing… stones OFTEN have some nasty ingredients…. But your ring looks great!

Wow, your finga so sharpz! 😂
Wowwwww ❤❤❤ beautiful Ring 💍
why not use a screw driver for the mini lathe part? it runs slower
You should polish the ring with 200k grit polishing compound or jewlers Rouge. That will make the stone really shine
It wasn't the speed it was the uneven heating of a stone xD.... Stones are full of pours and cracks set one in a fire it shatters dangerously you must slowly heat then let it rest & cool for 15-20 minutes
Hey! Do you think I can go this with agate stone instead of soapstone?
Agate it's way harder than soap stone, you will need diamond tools for that
Look up certain rocks’ hardness on google, maybe try to stay around soapstone(6-6.5 I think?) I personally am going to experiment, and maybe I’ll have as many rings as jack sparrow
@@pebble_paper_shotgun2551 I'd love to know how this turns out for you

Great job, and informative also!
I'm pretty sure with soapstone, you have to heat it in coals? So it doesn't break. That's what needs to be done when making beads out of it
I’m so thankful I found this!! This is so cool and almost exactly what I want to do!! Do you have any contact info I could ask some questions about what kind of tools I would need to try this on some minerals/rocks I have at home? I would greatly appreciate it!
Nice job dude! I will apreciate more content like this🤟🤟🤟
where did you get the soap stone>?
Where did you get this block
Is there a way to do this with hand tools only?
Very good my friend
It broke from heat fractures, gotta keep the material cool with water
You can use oils to seal it
What stone is that
Great job
Awesome, thank you for the super glue tip.
damn thank you man really helpfull gonna make one tomorrow
I love simple design..
Thank you!!! I cant wait to fail miserably a few times!!!! Mlm
Seriously... I needed to see how to get the round shaping and expect to fail a few times. Virgins never get it right.. I'll get it. .
Aside from the glue use clear spray paint or epoxy resin .
Does this process work on qurats
Yo nice edit man!
Can you do it in agate stone plz?
how to get this machineries in India?
I was like, what that's it, then u said JK lol that was funny
Isn’t silica in limestone not soapstone ?
I know this is old, but micromesh would probably shine that up like crazy.

Consider coating the finished ring with UV resin..

Should've used epoxy resin. Love the video

You actually need CA glue, or even UV resin would work.
Resin works too kiddo!
How would you do that, by mold or solid block
Cool stuff
What stone?
He said the name in the first 8 seconds!
Guide me tools that you have used
Nice!

Cool
Try clear fingernail polish to finish the ring.
Too soft stone for a ring and wear mask

Native Americans carved cooking pots out of soapstone and maybe rings?
