If you dip your PVC pipes in some cooking oil it will make it easier to slide into the buckets. Greetings from Sydney Australia. If you have a problem with algae then paint your buckets black on the outside, 2 or more layers of spray on paint.
Use a LITTLE olive or cooking oil on your pvc, this helps them when inserting in grommets. It does dry over time so slippage is not an issue. Just slightly wet with oil a paper towel to apply. Small amounts.
Awsome setup so far. I am going to help you out with some tips before things go bad for you, 1st I would get rid of those copper valves as copper will be bad for the fish and benifitial bacteria later down the road and I recommend using top hat gromets on the fill lines with 1/8 th inch tubing going to each bucket from the grommets and your buckets won't over fill as they might with your current setup. 2nd I would definitely paint or cover the buckets as they are white and algae will takeover otherwise also down the road 3rd with that many buckets you probably don't need a solids filter and instead just add red wigglers to the buckets but that will depend on your fish stocking densidy. Sorry for all the info at once as I'm kinda a big aquaponics nerd. You are on the rite path though and thank you for sharing and as always Keep Building👍
CPVC is a cousin of regular PVC. CPVC (Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) is a thermoplastic produced by *chlorination* of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin, which is significantly more flexible and can withstand higher temperatures than standard PVC. Uses include hot and cold water delivery pipes and industrial liquid handling. This difference in makeup allows CPVC to withstand a wider range of temperatures. This is why many building codes require the use of CPVC as opposed to PVC for use in hot water applications. The ASTM standard allows PVC to be used in applications not exceeding 140 degrees F. Temperatures over this can cause softening of the material and weakening of joints. CPVC on the other hand can handle temperatures up to 200 degrees F.
Dear we need 24hour pumping? Or we can attach a solar panel for pumping the water from the fish tank because we can reduce the cost of electricity. Only day time on and night time off. It’s possible or not??
I mean maybe? You would have to add a lot of airstones into the fishtank tho. The water going thru the buckets removes the solid waste and disturbs the water so it gets air in it. If you shut it off for hours at a time your fish will suffocate
spin the pvc on a grinder for a second or so then use rubbing alcohol for a lubricant to install them through the grommets. Alcohol will evaporate within seconds after install
Strawberries need a PH of 5.5. Your not going to be able to grow strawberries on the same water supply as everything else. I grow strawberries in hydroponics and you have to check PH every time you add water to the system because tap water is around 7PH. Good video. I have a similar setup but mine is one cinder block high and spread out a little more. I buried my water tank in the ground because in the summer I want to keep the water as cool as possible. One more thing is I bought Black buckets to keep alga from growing and them painted them white to keep them cooler. Good luck.
@Cannabis Chemist thanks a lot. The problem is, most of all dealers by Amazon don´t send to Paraguay. Now i´ve saved all connections of my 100pcs dutch-buckets with smelt-glue...
Rookie move on the drain holes. Too small and get clogged with roots if you have any bigger plants. Go big on drain hole so flow does not get blocked with roots and you have flooding.
SheerasPlace 2" and up from bottom of bucket to a height inside the bucket of 2". Bottom of bucket is flat for better seal, the side of bucket has too much curvature. Grommet size can be ordered online.

Hey man, love the videos and information. I'm wanting to build a system from buckets on my indoor balcony. It is a small balcony so I'm thinking 5-6 buckets only. It is somewhat heated. I was wondering if I can use the fish tank rocks they sell in most pet stores would work for the system or do they compact too much? We are missionaries in Ukraine so can't find a bunch of the materials you have. I'm going to order the gromets and think PE-X floor heating tubing for the water lines. Any before construction advice would be appreciated.
I like the idea of the bucket system it seem a little redundant tho why not just build a 2’ tall by one wide but how ever long 13 buckets would be 13’ like a long plants box put liner in one drain one fill 90% less labor 90% less material.
Hmm, that's a very good idea. But if you want to expand or reduce the growing capacity then having separate buckets makes sense too. I wonder what purpose the interior 90 degree PVC elbow serves?
sorry but your buckets are way to close...they need to be spread apart. Also the benches are way too high given your greenhouse height. And, you really don't need 5 gal bucket - 3 gal will do for tomatoes, peppers, beans - lettuce and greens really only need 1 gal and do best in large rectangular 6" plastic tub.
@@Zeamus634 smaller bucket = less medium cost = more profit. It's better to spread out as it reduces instances of disease and if planting is too cramped it reduces total yields. The height limits the growth potential of the tomatoes and therefore limits their ability to absorb the maximum amount of light, reducing yields.
In some places, believe it or not, it's hard to find 3 gallon buckets. I have never seen 3 gallon buckets in any of the stores near me. I guess someone could have them shipped, but then there are usually shipping costs.
Cool video, love the Handle.. not the haters...If it works, ship it. Right on man, I dig your style.
Thanks
Thanks for sharing your works. Metal fitting is the expensive part but a very efficient setup.

Can you put up a parts list that's full deal so we can figure it out?
i was sure he was going to put the first pipe in the first bucket. my OCD is going crazy now ! haha great video !
Lol thanks
Thanks for sharing, this is definitely an inspiring video. Greetings from Spain.
are those buckets food grade? those resealse bad chemicals into the water
I also needed your help for strawberry hydroponic

Todd Larsen thanks so much for the tips
@@cjwcustomwoodworking Those valves look to be brass, Is that correct?
Building with Todd great

Older video just found it great idea on the return pipe you're the first that ive seen use it
i like the way you keeping this simple. nice video and thanx for sharing.
The Green Viking thanks and your welcome
Why brass valves? It will leach copper to the water. Not sure if it will bother the plants or fish.
How many watt water pumps have you used here?

That whole long paragraph, and you didn’t even inform him that his drain was pvc, and not abs?
Could you please share a simple diagram of the whole system ?
Hi Todd, may I know what you attached to the top of each bucket? And what is it for?
What size PVC pipe is that coming out and what size grommet are you using?
How about the pump/motor specifications? If any honest person knows than kindly explain
You use no siphon so the water in and out 24/7? thank you.

And I think it would kill the beneficial bacteria in the buckets as they need to stay wet
Do you really need to glue the joints in the pipes or can you get away without doing so?
It’s a really simple production
Soaking the grommets in hot water will make them flexible and easier to install
I need to hire a company to come build me one. Do they exist yet?
Thought you were suppose to use black buckets?
Great video. Do you have any issues with algae using the white buckets vs black?
Nice job, I like that
spin the pvc on a grinder for a second or so then use rubbing alcohol for a lubricant to install them through the grommets. Alcohol will evaporate within seconds after install
Are these copper /brass valves? If yes, you ll have problem with the fish by time
Have you had any problems with your system ? Have you made any modifications
you need too made a hot box inside the poly tunnel too keep it warm though the night and day .
5:00 you can save money by using saliva, then stick it in slowly but with some force. I should know I have experience in this.
Well done! Please can you tell me the song tittle?
Good works, good luck
Please could you give us nutrients percentage you get using aquaponics bucket (on a brix scale) thank you

where i can buy the sealings? I´m in paraguay, nobody know this parts in this country
@Cannabis Chemist thanks for the answer. I mean seals. For C. seeds i´ve no interest

What size grommet did you use?
What is bucket size(Litre)?
5 gallon. Because America
Rookie move on the drain holes. Too small and get clogged with roots if you have any bigger plants. Go big on drain hole so flow does not get blocked with roots and you have flooding.
So what size do you recommend? And can you find the same kind of Grommet for them?
SheerasPlace 2" and up from bottom of bucket to a height inside the bucket of 2". Bottom of bucket is flat for better seal, the side of bucket has too much curvature. Grommet size can be ordered online.
SheerasPlace Grainger.com has grommets in many sizes.
SheerasPlace Also, white buckets are Bad. May not seem like much but you want ZERO light penetration to root system.
where are you at in Canada that you would get a foot of snow this late ?

Good job
soo nice
no pump or fish work? ol
Cool stuff! Hope it’s working out! Take care ! 😊 peace ✌️ from Welland Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Great job!! Thanks
What is the size of the CPVC?
I'd say 1/2".

What size gromets did you? I ordered the one in the link you posted and they are huge in comparison to that you have.
No white buckets
Awesome
Great video... PLEASE XX the music in the future... It is distracting. Thanks.
Very good
Pvc is not food grade tho ??
You're right. But CPVC is.
Why would PVC not be Food Grade when People use it for Water Line?
Lots of PEX being used these days as well.

I like the idea. But its not like what we have here u fortunately, as we have wether issues
White pipe is PVC not ABS (is black). You are more likely OCD than ADD.
Good job and good luck.
Great video but background music is too loud and distracting.
Pls add next step
Wouldn't matching every hole location be the opposite of ADD? Just shuckin' ya!!
Nice work, sub'd
Thanks
dont use white buckets unless you want green roots, its so damn hard to find a good simple tutorial for newbies

Correct... a 5 gal bucket costs me $2.75, and a 3 gal bucket is almost $5... can we just put less medium in the larger bucket?
Legal 🇧🇷
ADD? OCD? BPD? Sure, that diagnosis with letters
Abs is black pipe ..... that’s pvc
Right on!!! ✌🇨🇦✌🇨🇦
Looks cool check out my design of a deep water culture it’s very basic
This is what's called algaeponics
So uhh....

Shocking delivery, Idea ok but it never kept my interest. Points for trying though
Lol
Omg. You speak too much dude..way too much
