    My Coronet sounds incredible. The pickup and pots work together really well. Creamy low end, a ton of mids, beautiful high end and a ton of dynamics and variation, from heavy overdrive to almost acoustic tones with the volume knob alone. The neck is very comfy with rolled edges. A deal at the price too.

      Harley Benton pickups are usually pretty average (I've got three of them, and I put Tonerider pickups in two of them), but their P90s are great!
      I've got their Goldtop 'replica', with the original P90 in the neck, and Tonerider in the bridge, and honestly, there was no noticeable improvement with the Tonerider.

  • @lesshorter616
    @lesshorter616 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Couple of observations about the Vintage electronics.
    The P100 may be a stacked humbucker. Hence the high resistance reading and 4 wires.
    They may have put linear pots in the guitar rather than log pots. That could explain the one-off nature of the pots.

    • @pat_rick2419
      @pat_rick2419 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Harley Benton has a DC LPJ style knockoff with a stacked P90 that has coil splitting to give you a standard P90 sound. I remember when Billie Joe Armstrong had a DC Junior signature with a stacked P90 in it and people bought it expected a P90 sound and essentially got a humbucker and it turned people off, so the coil splitting feature on the Harley Benton is great. I think it goes for under $300.

    • @fossilmatic
      @fossilmatic 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Vintage P100 is a stacked pickup. On their Mick Abrahams SG Special knock off it had two of these soap bar style. Great neck and resonance to that guitar, so I stripped it, plugged the pickup cavities, rerouted the bridge cavity a little further forward like a 61 Junior, replaced the wiring loom with a 50s style, threw in a Brierley (Australian hand wound) dogear low wound P90, painted it Olympic white, made a early 60s style pickguard, replaced the tuners with Kluson style Gotohs. I did keep the wraparound lightning bar bridge it had. Plays like a mofo.😊

    A lot of budget guitars seem to be improving in the last few years. Full size pots don't add that much cost, but do add value to the player. I've been an Epiphone fan for a long time, but Harley Benton keeps surprising me with how good they are for what they cost. If Thoman will raise their QC level a little they'll really improve. Of course you can't expect perfection with guitars of such a low price but if you are able to tinker with it they can become a killer guitar for a fraction of the price of the big names. They are incredible. History repeats itself. Everybody made fun of products from Japan. See where they are now. Same goes for China and Indonesia.

    Great review, thank you! I own a faded cherry red 1978 El Degas double cutaway Les Paul Junior with two P90 soapbar pickups, which I bought new at the time. I understand it's a Japanese copy of the 1960 Gibson Special Double Cut. I love the guitar and want to keep it because these are light and impossible to find today, but the original P90's are just so poor and hum like crazy, even with proper shielding. So, a long time ago I found a used DiMarzio double row humbucker in a soapbar format, which I installed at the bridge. It does cancel the hum, but I find it kills the personality of the instrument. So, after decades of waiting, I finally found two newly released DiMarzio Fantom P90 soapbars and will install them in the El Degas. I just can't wait for the result because these are newly designed hum-canceling pickups for that format and are rated at 13.77 kOhms. Likely the design somehow hides a second noise cancelling coil within. So I checked and the Wilkinson P90 on the Vintage V130 is also specified as a hum-cancelling pickup, which may explain why it reads around 14kOhms and has four wires, as it's a double coil. I'm a retired engineer with some experience in ferrite transformer design, so I hope one day to get to the bottom of how it's done, without cutting one open! For now though I think this could explain the total resistance of the winding. My 2 cents...

    I just bought the red Epi Coronet. It’s already one of my favorite guitars in my collection. It plays and sounds fantastic. And surprisingly the intonation is almost spot on. My only complaint is the neck dive when used standing with a strap. Sitting with it in your lap it’s perfectly balanced. Might have to move the strap button to the horn. Cheers and thanks for the review!

      I found that using "Grippers" strap buttons from Stewmac fixes that flaw instantly...
      My SG's and my Firebirds no longer have neck dive...
      Moreover, these strap buttons are a safe option because of their T-shape and they can't rust over time...

Both together cost me about $900 shipped from Japan. Now they're going for $1K plus each. Still the best Gibsons I've ever had. Lol. They are remarkable in quality. If you can find one in the $1000 range they are still a way better deal than a Gibson at 3X the price. They are making them in China too now. I would imagine they are better than Epiphones and don't have the ugly headstock.

    I believe the 4 conductors indicate a a stacked P-90 you could then install a push pull if one so desired. I got one of this Vintage SG’s a few months ago,
    Very pleased with the build.
    The pups a ok, that would be a point of upgrade for most I think.
    But the Bones are quite solid.

    Interesting comparison and totally fair as you found them, but I have to say I bought the Vintage Guitar Company Les Paul Junior Double Cut version about a year & a half ago, and mine is absolutely superb. I’ve been playing for fifty-odd years, so I’ve played a load of guitars in that time, and I always wanted a Junior as a change from my Strat & Tele. I didn’t want to splash a load of cash on a Gibson, and got the chance of a bankrupt stock one £149 (!)
    At the price, I thought it was worth a punt. I have to say it’s one of my favourite ever guitars. It didn’t smell at all, and after a setup it plays well & sounds gorgeous. I’ve no idea if the pickup is a P90, a P100, or whatever, but I don’t care, I love this guitar! I would hate to think your review, although well meant, puts anyone off trying one of the Vintage Guitar versions, as they’re better than this comes across. Peace & love!

    I’ve got a load of single P90 guitars but none are current models. I found this review of current models interesting, it’s amazing what you can get for not much money these days, nothing was terrible. I suspect that the Vintage guitar has a stacked humbucker like the Gibson P100 pickup, you could probably fit a pull switch pot and turn into a single coil when needed, (less output, cleaner sound), if did it yourself it would probably cost less than £10! I love your old SG Junior , I borrowed one around 25 years ago whilst my SG Standard was being repaired and wish I’d never returned it, it was an early 60s guitar and was absolutely amazing.

    Picked up a used HB DC-60 for a song and I just love the thing! Sounds and plays great, especially considering what it cost. This is probably the best "cheap" guitar I ever played. Did need a bit of a set up, but nothing major. The Roswell Anlico V P90 it comes with is pretty great. Loves Fuzz and I really like that with a slight turn on the vol. and/or tone controls it starts sounding completly different and cleans up really well. For the $/€/£ these cost, you can't go wrong imho. It reminds me a bit of a good Epi SG 400 I used to own. But I love the fact that due the DC-60 being a single Pu guitar, the set neck resonates more then the 2 pu SG.

    Another great review - best channel and best choice of guitars to review, bar none. A couple of years ago I bought a Tokai Junior - Chinese made rather than my other Tokais which are all MIJ - but a great guitar nonetheless - very playable, low action, decent intonation, fit and finish excellent. I had my tech put a Bare Knuckles Nantucket P90 in and it sounds perfect. The only downside is that at 6 and a half pounds I find it too light for live work...I like heavy LPs for on stage that anchor me to the floor....but for playing at home and, particularly recording, it is superb...

They occasionally come up on the secondhand market for around £200. Great guitar for the money! I sourced reproduction 59 Coronet carousel tone and volume knobs. Then i wanted it to be be as close to the 59 version with the new yorker pickup which are like rocking horse sh*t. So albeit im in the UK i contacted Curtis Novak in California who is a genius with pickups and is the only person i know of who has made a reproduction of the new yorker pickup. So he made me one to order with a parchment custom scratch plate. Wow. I mean wow. This guitar now looks and sounds on a different level. Hi Colin.
    It’s probably been stated in the comments here a few times already, but a P100 is, essentially, 2 P90-style bobbin and magnet sets, but stacked to form a true humbucker. Therefore, although fairly similar in tone, it’s not an actual P90 which, of course, has a single broad wound bobbin on top of 2 magnets, which are positioned one each side of the 6 pole pieces. 👍

      @@theguitaristas Far better than I expected by way of comparisons to my USA or Japanese (Fender & Tokai) guitars. I've played it for hours today. Extremely comfortable with rather different tones. Being a long time fav guitar of mine, I've never seen the value of the top dollar Japanese variants these days. (I'm just not good enough for those either!). So, taking the plunge here has been a revelation.
      The only fault at this point I can see is both volume pots. Rolling off the volume in any position seriously takes away treble to an almost unusable level. I'm not sure if that is a quirk of the Gretsch or me not yet knowing how to dial in the amp and perhaps pedals. I'm already wondering if they need to be changed out to address what I think could be an issue. Guess getting to know the guitar better will help. Perhaps all that's missing is a treble bleed circuit in the master volume pot?
      Have you thought about any changes to yours or happy in stock. I'm actually not one for tinkering, my guitars have never needed more than basic care, maintenance and of course string changes.
      Cheers.

    Harley Benton does a DC junior, a DC Junior FAT with a stacked P90 /w coil split , SC Junior as well as the SG you have tried. The DC FAT is around $30 more. Great review of these guitars. Too bad there isn't smellovision so we can find out what that Vintage smelled like LOL

    After watching your video I found it was very interesting and fair. I decided at 73 and a bit of a collector have never played or owned an SG guitar, so I have purchased the Harvey Benton DC-60 and got it through Thomanns from Germany, which took four days to arrive, and un-boxing it today. I shall be plugging it into my Fender Blues Junior Tweed with Celestion Blueback. I hope mine has a voice of an angel or the bark of a Rottweiler at the twist of a knob, so looking forward to the experience. I will give you my thoughts on this guitar,happy days

      Hey David, that’s great to hear! I hope you enjoy this one... should sound great through the blues junior just add some fuzz when you back off the the tone for that creamy woman tone and you’re in heaven! Let us know how you get on eh? Cheers, have fun today! 😎👍

      @@theguitaristas Hi there, well as promise my thoughts, It was double boxed so no damage in transit. Before even playing had to lower the action and tweak the relief. B string were flat on intonation so dealt with that. When playing found that when the tone control was rolled off, the volume on the top E string was very low, so raised the pole screw and rectified that issue. Found the weight a tad more than my T Guitar but not complainig. Never made any adjustments to my Blues Junior, and normally clean, played my new guitar at full volume and it roars, back off the volume below7 and starts clean up, rolled the tone control off and so sweet, sounding like a neck pick up. My very first P90 double cut in faded cherry, not that faded i might add, for the price, totally blown away. Pots were 1" found the knobs a bit flimsey, but Heyho full marks Harley Benton.

    I would be interested to hear your opinion of the current Gibson SG Junior compared to the other options shown here. $1399 isn’t crazy money for a US made instrument these days.

    The Vintage has a stacked P-90, also known as a P-100.
    Hence the 4 wire, and I think, the higher output
    It's also slightly hum canceling

    This was a help to me. Always enjoyable to listen to this Russian presenter. Is that a Cockney accent? No? In the past week I bought a Epi LP Special P-90's; A Harley Benton Fat Junior DC w/1 P-90, and a 2014 Gibson LP Melody Maker w/ P90Sr and P90St(?) . Thank you sir.

    My go-to guitar is a BC Rich Mockingbird. Got it on consignment, the owner had installed EMGs. After about a year, I was tired of them, swapped in a set of GFS Mean 90s. And that's all I ever use now. Once you go 90 there aint no comin' back.

    Thanks for all your hard work in producing this detailed review. I had an original RH Gibbo ‘63 Junior with glued headstock which I played upside down 40 years ago in a punk metal band (type ‘Leave This Town’ by the Norton Sisters into YT to hear the amazing tone). I miss that guitar so much I am getting a LH HB DC60 to tweak and try to replicate those days in a new Sisters studio project. Sold the original back in the day for 450 notes, would be worth almost ten times that now ! Ashamed to say I hardly ever changed strings or checked the bridge intonation, but it sounded great going straight a Marshall head and Sound City 4x12. I have the tinnitus as a constant reminder of those days...

      @theguitaristas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Robin, thanks for the support it's appreciated! I shall check that video out man... I reckon the HB will get you close enough. Funny I remember those days when intonation didn't exist... I could never afford a Marshall head so it was a Roost head into Sound City 4 x 12 for me. Ah tinnitus...
