  • The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is facing new calls to resign after an official report outlined serious failures of leadership and judgement in Downing Street during Covid lockdown.
The report by a senior civil servant into breaches of lockdown found evidence of 16 separate gatherings that appear to have breached lockdown rules.
The Metropolitan Police has begun a criminal investigation
Mr Johnson apologised in the House of Commons and appealed to members of his party to back him after renewed calls for him to step down.
The Labour opposition Keir Starmer said Mr Johnson had brought shame on his office and was not fit to be Prime Minister.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by political editor Laura Kuenssberg.

He can't fix this. People up and down the land are furious and rightly so. Five people at my Dad's funeral. FIVE. That's all we could have. He's insulting us all by refusing to resign. Disgusting, degrading, insulting, inhumane and utterly self-seeking. That's not what public office should be about.

I pray that those who suffered, lost loved ones and made huge sacrifices during lockdown receive some solace from the opposition speeches, and know that not all politicians are as ruthlessly selfish, self serving and smug as Johnson is. As a lifelong Conservative voter with 35 years of uniformed Service , I will never, ever again cast my vote for ANY of these leeches whilst they remain in office.
I find it absolutely appalling and debasing that we've come to this. If Johnson had an ounce of moral fibre, dignity, humility, contrition, penance and integrity, he would have made a sincere apology and then resigned. But of course, he didn't. Moreover, Johnson just couldn't resist bragging and lying about vaccine rollouts, fastest growth in the G7, building hospitals etc.
Johnson has no moral compass, no sense of shame, altruism, morality or decency. That he clings to his office like a parasitic limpit just proves what a contemptible and worthless nonentity he is. He doesn't serve the nation, he serves himself. If his own MPs don't evict him from No 10 pretty damn quickly, then the voting public MUST.

_‘I was there. Keir Starmer had nothing to do with the decisions taken. On the contrary, He supported me in bringing hundreds of abusers to justice.’ Mr Johnson’s comments echoed online conspiracy theories that Mr Starmer had intervened to stop Savile from being charged or was personally responsible. These were debunked by fact-checking charity Full Fact, which stated: ‘The allegations against Savile were dealt with by local police and a reviewing lawyer for the CPS. ‘Mr Starmer was head of the CPS when the decision was made not to prosecute Savile but he was not the reviewing lawyer for the case. ‘An official investigation commissioned later by Starmer criticised both prosecutors and police for their handling of the allegations.’_
