I have seen some classic bad reviews of businesses here in Costa Rica. "Too hot"; "too many bird sounds"; "beach had too many rocks". I always wonder what the guest was expecting the hotel or restaurant to do about these things. "Oh, I'm sorry sir, let me just call my nephew and he will immediately relocate the country of Costa Rica to a temperate zone".

    • @thejunglekitchen
      @thejunglekitchen 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

By the way Brian, my two cents on your bad review is to either completely ignore it OR post a short and polite comment explaining your GF policy and then ignore anything following that. A lot of people get sucked in to an online conversation with a difficult customer- it's not worth it, and it actually makes the business owner seem petty or like they have too much time on their hands. Any reasonable person who reads that review will recognize that the customer was being unnecessarily harsh. I've worked in hospitality and tourism for 20 years- you have to look after your regulars, but you also have control over who those regulars are. Do you really want $100 from someone who is a massive pain in the bum?

@@richellecharles5488 Classic. There is legitimately a review online about a hotel in my village where they compared it to the movie "Apocalypse Now" because of the cricket and frog sounds. I am glad you were so thoughtful and polite about your bad review. I totally sympathize with you. I think you will have to completely hold to your no gluten for online orders policy, or have a disclaimer with a check box acknowledging that you cannot guarantee that there will not be cross contamination on the online order form. Essentially you are not a gluten-free kitchen, so you can't promise that there is no wheat, hence gluten, dust in some of the food.

As a business, NEVER play favorites. You treat all customers to the company standard, no extras or freebies. Because they will always want more, they will brag about it thus making other customers want in, and they will absolutely destroy you once they don't get their way.

Don't stress yourself trying not to 'date' the episodes by avoiding talking about current events at the time. It's honestly one of the more enjoyable and relatable parts of youtube videos like this and my fav podcasts (like YMH, Tigerbelly and Bad Friends). I'd be happy to watch y'all react and chat about things even if they're not just food related. But also I was a band geek and feel triggered by that parade footage lol

Frenchy was right in terms of attempting to make the entitled happy.
    BUT
He has had an established, landmark business for decades. Hell of an accomplishment, but also gives him certain privileges. Which he EARNED.
Brian, you’re new, and appear to be a tremendous person, and operator.
Online is a pain in the ass. If you give people special approvals when you’re there, you either should make them aware of it, and tell them how they should order the next time so they’re happy whether you’re there, or not.
    OR
Just say no in the beginning.
This business is so tough in the sense of, you can accommodate people 9 times out of 10, but the 1 time you don’t, they will likely disregard the 9 you did, and put out a negative review which potentially costs you a customer, or 2.
Nice guys get screwed the very second they can’t act as such.
When it comes to online, I’ve found out that we need a hard line that can’t be crossed, or an established alternative.
    God bless you both.
F.C.I grad here, and thanks for bringing JT in my life!! He’s a genius!!

I gave a local restaurant a two star review years ago because their service was terrible and they were always getting orders wrong. They improved and I went back and edited my original review. I rarely leave reviews for restaurants at all. If it's truly terrible, I take note, and never return.
I've got every dietary restriction known to man. I've got chronic pancreatitis from a gallstone blockage. That led to type 2 diabetes and now I get chronic bouts of colitis. I know what I can and cannot eat. For me to castigate a restaurant for not meeting my needs would make the biggest asshole in the universe. I've decided it's better to save my money than make someone else's life miserable.

Been serving food to my customers since I was a kid at the family deli. Frenchie was absolutely right, No matter what you do, customers, especially the recurring ones end up being entitled from years of good service and are very quick to turn their nose at us if we made a mistake, or couldn't fulfill a 'specific' instruction and blast us on facebook, instagram, you name it. Only for them to come by again as a customer a few months later. Makes zero sense!

My job gives me tennis elbow, and one thing that helps me the most is a stretch. Point your arm straight out in front of you, and make a fist, then point your fist to the floor while keeping your arm in the same position. Hold for 30 seconds, then open your hand to point your fingers to the floor, hold another 30 seconds. If you have a bad day of pain and the stretch doesn’t work, ibuprofen will take care of it as a last resort.

A few times after watching these 2 chefs, I’ve found myself fully pregnant, had stunning children, and kept long and loving relationships with all of them even after they’ve turned 18, and my dining room table isn’t big enough for everything during the Thanksgiving Day dinner. The one star review was the definition of ‘the road to hell is paved with good intentions’.
Worked at many places where there is a rule or service that is not provided that someone historically has said they will do for that one customer.
Then if this ever changes or someone quotes the policy for the other 99.99999% of customers (maybe cause they weren’t told) then the entitlement explosion happens and they’re on the phone to the CEO / Complaining to the regulator / Putting in a formal complaint.
This is why you should always apply a policy all the time with no exceptions. Not all business/customers is/are worth having.

On the review question, nothing pisses me off more as a customer than somebody getting special treatment. There's a couple reasons for it though; 1. The people who get special treatment constantly leave people waiting and waiting in line just to put their order in and to get their food, and 2. I'd rather know that the place is consistent, because then you know what you're paying for. If somebody comes in with a special order right before I do, I'm almost certain that my order is gonna be screwed up, and I'll have to waste my time, if not money, getting it redone.

I only leave reviews if the service / food was excellent or really bad. It takes something horrible, like the staff doing something offensive or rude to me for me to give a negative review. I also take reviews with a grain of salt, especially about food. Everyone has different taste buds and some people think their food experts. If I order foreign food or something new, I think maybe it is the way it is supposed to taste. I think some people don't realize ordering food comes with the risk that it might not suit them. I learned to ask waiters their recommendations.
When I look at reviews, it is more important to me how the business owners respond. No matter how unfair the review it is, I think it is important to respond professionally.
While I understand negative reviews are upsetting, I doubt it would deter customers. People can assess an unfair, biased review.
I also saw a couple of TH-cam videos where the hosts claimed that people find businesses with all four stars unbelievable.

I'm a perpetual skinny person and i came here looking for advice on how to gain fat but... i don't think this show is about how to get fat? .... i also have tennis elbow though, i use these rubbery flex bars to do little workouts that are supposed to help it.

Plastic recycling is really bad for energy...but recycling metal and glass are HIGHLY efficient. Cardboard and paper are pretty decent too. It's basically plastic and electronics that are shit at recycling right now, and plastic is unlikely to improve.

I'd say the narrative of that review is a little different as you did clip out their full scores. Maybe they could of gave you a 3 star and you should potentially complain about that, and why a 1/5 service but a 5/5 atmosphere and food warrants a 1/5 overall. Maybe you should reach out to google and critique their scoring system and see if scores could be made better by selecting categories, and not try and shit on a customer. You didnt shit on them Brian, but Frenchy sure did, for no good reason. If im scrolling and see a 4.4/5, Ill consider that pretty good. Just like anyone would. Then Ill check the recent negative reviews quickly to check for any changes in food quality. If I find a review that was written like this customer, since his situation doesnt apply to me, I wont consider it in my opinion. The fact that he said the atmosphere and food were 5/5 and gave a detail description is pretty good for qualifying the review. Could of just said "Doesnt fulfill dietary restrictions, 1/5", and not describe anything. That person that left you a review only leaves 1 star reviews. So he isnt helping anyone out posting positive reviews. That's kind of shitty, but being descriptive with the review is a lot better then what most do.
Why not offer it on the app? Whats the liability you are talking about? You put the conditions on the app... if they dont read it, its on them. Literally what fine prints protects you over. Other restaurants make it work. I'd assume for Frency that not offering to go bags is more of a cost saving measure. If you were worried about liability, you could easily have fine print on a the bag, recipients, posted somewhere.
Just scrolling through the reviews, I think you should be more concerned of the "Soggy bread", "Got food poisoning", "wait time 40mins", "Sandwiches piling up at register with no one to hand out", "no help with door dash order, told to call door dash." I just scrolled by newest for these. The door dash one seemed to line up with this one. Customer missed adding sauce. Calls the restaurant to try and fix it, but only get asked to call door dash. A mistake happened, could help out a repeat customer and just add it on and not charge extra if you cant adjust the price. That's one of the things you do just to help out with minimal cost impact on you. Maybe should consider the processes and procedures that need to be put in place when door dash orders dont go well and what you can do to fix it, if anything.
Maybe consider, when you absolutely cant help a customer, that you put something in the order to show you want to consider fixing it. Maybe like a $1 off of a $14 sandwich or something. Wont break the bank, you plan not to mess up door dash orders frequently so you wont be giving these out much, and its a minimal gesture that likely stops the person making an angry review. My wife works for customer service for an electric company. People call in on their 1000+ monthly bill cursing and being nasty because they didnt realize what running 14 space heaters would do to their bill. They will offer a 20.00 coupon and let them have a payment plan ( so basically nothing on a 1000.00 bill), and they end up thanking the reps and being easier to deal with.
You should really consider the customer's opinion is always right, and if its the different of $5 on a $100 order, it may be worth some sort of on the spot fix. Have a system built in place that allows these fixes without needing your input. Also, if you were doing something special for certain customers... you have to consider changing policies will come with upsetting those customers, and accept a review ding... as 4.4/5 shows you are pretty good.

I can understand why most places don't do specialty-items like gluten-free or nut-free on apps, because there's another aspect missing. For example, I'm dyslexic as fuck. I can *easily* miss certain words that change the entire context of a sentence/order. It makes it especially hard sometimes when it comes to the job field I'm in.
It's straight-up a liability issue, which can still be pinned on you as the provider of the food.
But why people with food allergies go to places that are primarily that allergen is beyond me.

  • @Spankmepink

Gluten is NOT an allergy it is an intolerance, it doesn't stop people from breathing like an allergy. There is a huge difference between an allergy vs an intolerance.

The people over at good mythical kitchen capitalized on that first but that’s an old phrase so it is in the public domain and as much as I love them I wish they hadn’t of gotten there first because that was told to me, when I was about 14. but I also love their channels too, so I’m torn

They had the rights for the Hulk.
They literally went with “David” instead of Bruce because whoever was in charge thought the name “Bruce” wasn’t manly enough.
So they changed it for the show.

Honestly, it's awesome that you do offer gluten free options, but this was an unreasonable customer expecting special treatment above and beyond what is necessary, You are 1000% correct that it's a liability. Frenchy is right, it's not worth the hassle, F* em.

Love the show. I can't tell but there seems to be a slight echo on the audio, particularly on Frenchy's mic in this episode (perhaps it's just me though?)
Don't offer gluten free bread. Not sure what the rest of your menu is but if someone has celiac we feel bad about it, but they should not be eating sandwiches unless they are buying their own/making their own gluten free bread, if they are actually taking their health and condition seriously.
If someone is gluten sensitive or otherwise gluten phobic those folks again should not be ordering sandos. They're being selfish. I've worked in tons of sandwich places and it's totally obnoxious.
    Not.
    Worth.

As some one with the Celiac Disease, i do understand that one star. Because of that cross contamination, and the fact most places just can't afford to take the necessary precautions, when you find a place that can or is willing to accommodate for you and have the place close the door on you suddenly it's a stab to the heart.
They are now lost... Scared and alone... Floating thru the empty void...
So Not to say it's justified, but it's at least their pain is understandable.

Wasnt going to comment, but that customer gave you the 1* after repeatedly accommodating their needs, these people are like those folks who will stab you in the back at every turn. That $120 every couple weeks isnt going to effect you in the long run. You were polite in your response, the ball is back in their court. Either they understand and life goes on or they stop ordering. Either way, you're walking the razors edge

It's "THE customer is always right" not "A customer is always right". If every customer was saying "let us order gluten free delivery" then perhaps you need to look into if that's possibility. Same as if your customers never order a particular sandwich. They're not wrong for not ordering it, it's something you need to consider removing.
The customer who left you a review did call up to try rectify the issue, so I wouldn't say they ran right to posting a bad review. I'm not necessarily siding with them, but I'm not sure what else they should be expected to do.
