  • World class performance at an everyday price. High end audio doesn't have to be expensive these days. Thanks to companies like VTV and Class D Hypex amplifier technology its within reach of almost anybody. You no longer need to be a rich prick. Although most of them have gear that looks a lot better than it performs....LOL.

    My allergies were killing me in the second half of this video so I was a bit grumpy...LOL. I decided to sell this amp because although it measures very well it doesn't sound $550 dollars better than my previous Marantz SR4021, Emotiva A300, Behringer A800, Crown XLS1000, Sony VA333ES. Also I picked up a used Harman Kardon HK3490 stereo receiver just out of whim for $120 and was quite surprised. To me it sounds really good and has lots of power. Never had a Harman Kardon but now I'm glad I grabbed this HK3490. The more amplifiers and DACs I go through the more speakers seem to matter even more and that's where my money will be going.

    Nice review. I recently purchased the VTV purifi 7040 amp with the sonic imagery 995fet pro after my long time amp died. I had a parasound 23+ on loan so I a/b them. The VTV walked all over the parasound. I was worried about VTV because of some of the negative reviews out there. Well the customer service is outstanding with Warren. The case is solid. Love this amp and the pricing is very reasonable. I opened it up and its well laid out. You get 30 day trial. I spoke with warren multiple times and he just wants people to be happy with their purchase, great guy. Very happy with my amp, great match with my avm90. USA made and ordered on Sunday evening received on Wednesday. I emailed Warren Sunday and he emailed back 2 hours later with his number. Excellent customer service.

    You are tripping me out dude. I have that same harmon kardon receiver on my windows tabs right now. I was looking into the new class d modules/amps. That's how I found your video and you prefer an old ass reciever to that fancy new class d contraption.
    I bought my 1st hk avr 40 new in like 1997. It was only rated like 60 W per channel but it seemed to have more power than 100W per channel receivers did. I loved the sound of it with my old b&w 601 s3's. I still have it (and a set of bigger 602 s3) but it's in storage the other side of the country. It's so crazy how people either hate the sound of hk or love them. Nobody is neutral.
    I read somewhere that these 120 W hk's are not as defined at lower volumes (like mine?). Can't imagine twice the power.

    Very interesting review, mate. I like your style! I'm currently using a Crown XLS 2502 + LS50 Metas for my computer audio. I like the sound, but the highs can get a bit bright/harsh. I've been considering the Hypex amps like your VTV. The VTV Hypex NC502MP costs about the same as my 2502. I've read about some QA issues with VTV. Your experience with them is very reassuring, though. Buckeye Hypex amps get a lot of praise for audio and build quality, but they're constantly backordered. My music preferences are Nine Inch Nails, Gary Numan, Battle Tapes, Alice in Chains, Metallica, Combichrist, so it's similar to yours. Not sure what I'll do about a different amp. Your excellent review gave me a lot to think about.

      Have you considered measuring and calibrating your system. What you have already should be fine. Since you use a PC I'd get a Dayton Audio UMM-6 mic ($70) and install REW on your PC. Then you can start taking measurements from your listening position. This will show your system response then install Equalizer APO+Peace on your PC to make adjustments and correct the frequency response. Makes a huge difference and has allowed me to correct all my systems around the house. Also has saved me a ton of money. Instead of just shooting in the dark and buying different equipment to achieve a good response I can EQ about any system in any room to have a decent response. I should do a video in this. Let me know if this interests you I can help ya get it setup its fairly easy.

    We agree that class D is taking over. Premium brands are sticking ICE or Hypex or Purifi modules in their systems and charging the earth.
    That said, you didn't say much. Either ASR parameters, comparisons, or what speakers you are using them with (DIY, I think, but what drivers?) Or taking the cover off. Nice box and sounds great. Yeah! :-) Enjoy!

    I wonder how well this amp will pair up with the Khadas Tone 2?

    • @iowaudioreviews
      @iowaudioreviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Should pair well since they both measure very well. The balanced RCA on the Khadas is interesting, but doesn't say if they are the standard 4v used with balanced or 2v used with RCA.... Either way it will work with a set of RCA to XLR cables. Only con may be if the Khadas is less than 4v line out you may lose a little power on the VTV.

    I bought a pair of NCx500 amps, but I was curious about the NC252MP, so I found an assembled unit offered second-hand at a decent price, and I bought that as well. Both are really excellent amps, with the NCx500 sounding slightly warmer and having slightly better bass character along with its unrestrained dynamic potential, but the NC252MP is still a world-class amplifier on its own. The NC252MP runs about as warm as some Class-AB amps I have had, though it has less heatsinking so the amount of heat output in watts is probably less than a comparable Class-AB amp. For the majority of users and the majority of speakers, the NC252MP is an endgame amp choice disguised as an amp module. The only reason to buy something else is you want more power for really hefty speakers (where you'd buy something like NCx500) OR you want a deliberately sweetened sound like certain solid state or tubes can provide for matching with certain system components; the NCore amps sound squeaky clean and detailed, but they are also very literal - no sweetening of the sound, just linear amplification of the input signal.

    • @iowaudioreviews
      @iowaudioreviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great piece of gear and does measure well but not as well as a Hypex. Also even though the Hypex NC252MP has 250w x2 @ 4ohm I was running close to its last bit of headroom. Same with my new favorite the HK3490, I love this amp but I need more power. Might try a QSC GX3 or GX5 next. I don't need a super clean amp for the music I listen to. Most main stream music is poorly made and only benefits so much from a good amp. And I don't listen to hi res elevator music LOL. I just need a lot of good power and the extra money is better spent on speakers. May grab a SMSL DA-9 for review though, looks like a really good little integrated amp.

      @@iowaudioreviews thanks for the info. since you need all the good power you can get i suggest you get fx-audio Tube-03MKii Tube Preamp and pair it in series with the Rockville R7EQ (and later also schiit loki plus) i know all of this laughable but trust me you will be as shocked as i was when you hear how good all of this sounds together. main vol on r7eq no more than 20% , main vol on 03mkii can be max. the loki you can adjust as you like, it will give you more depth and frequency range(thats my perception).

      @@iowaudioreviews the GX5 is a 'good' muscle amp. Very strong, especially for it's size. The fans on the current models are way more quiet than the ones from 4 years ago but not Crown quiet. As far as a hi fi amp, no. GX5 edges out the Crown XLi series in SQ but it's not up on the Hypex level. If you are just rocking out loud with big speakers GX5 is fine tho. For the price the GX5 is a huge bargain.

    I own this amplifier and I love it to pieces however take what I'm about to say rightly,Fantastic measurement does not a good sound make.
    I own a whole lot of different amps and integrated amps as well everything from marantz to NAD to pass labs to Mcintosh to bel canto suffice it to say I have a profound ability to tell you about Sonic characteristics. And at the end of the day truth be said is there's a lot of things I like about class d and I really like the VTV amp, I have the same one you have here. But let's be honest and admit that it has nothing and I repeat nothing on my pass labs XA25. Hell I slightly like my belcanto better than the VTV but only because it's a little warmer sounding to me. No I say these things not to disparage and I could go on and on about how much I like class d but in my opinion and a lot of people's too as good as they are especially the top tier like the new eigentack they are still missing that something special.
    That said I do agree class d will probably take over in the next decade at least in the budget space and the entry level up to let's say $1,000 but I think for the perceivable future we will continue to have and be able to enjoy the good old wasteful high power amplifiers.

    "The best performing amps is class D" absolutely not.
    Class d is very good, but not good enough, yet anyway.
    And please remember that great meauserments don't always equal good sound.

    • @Audiorevue
      @Audiorevue ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sort of at a lost of how to respond to your comment because on the one hand I picked up this same amplifier having heard it through an audio friend and my initial response to it was ,when I heard it, that this is the best class d I've ever heard. It actually does nothing offensive at least not in the way that I've heard class d amps sound in the past. It isn't glaring it isn't tiring to listen to and it's something that I can listen to for more than 10 minutes without my attention wondering or me thinking to myself that I want to turn it off.
      Now on the other hand is it as good as my pass labs XA25 absolutely not but it's quite a bit cleaner sounding then the pass amp is. It's definitely not as romantic sounding and there's less tonal variety in terms of timbre and the color of music. But at the same time it's also faster sounding than the pass more quicksilvery.
      So I guess what I'm saying is different strokes for different folks or different amps for different music but it's actually the first class d amp that I enjoy listening to

    To be fair, you say a lot of thing from the hill of authority but you stand in the valley of zero experience. Confirmed by your comment. (pinned).
    Some people have devoted their working life in the pursuit of improving and understanding audio performance, many are some of the finest engineers the world has seen. I would name them but I know you would have no idea who they were or what they did.

      1. I have no hill of authority, just my opinion. We all have one. My pinned comment is not my entire audio resume, I've been doing this since 2001 and had a plethora of gear.
      2. I know all about the hard work in engineering this gear. I have two family members that are electrical engineers and another thats a architect. I don't know all the greats behind audio but my favorite is Floyd Toole and of course Andrew Jones. .
      3. My channel is just for fun I really don't take this hobby that serious anymore when it come to the equipment. As I get older its more about the music. The hypex really is great but for me its not worth it over the HK3490 I got used for $100. Which also objectively measures quite well and has plenty of power. I also mostly listen to mainstream music which doesn't benefit as much from high end equipment. To steal a phrase from The Cheap Audio Man "don't binge watch, binge listen" .
