I recently met a guy who works for the U.N and he told me how much they look forward to these conferences. They have to rock up at some of the meetings but they get time for the beach. I asked him why they couldn't do the whole thing on Teams or Zoom and lower the environmental impact. He frowned and explained to me that face to face is so much more productive. So why has it taken 26 meeting to see absoloutely no reduction in our carbon output? I asked. "Ah! just think how much more it would have been without those meetings." he replied.

About two years ago, a European organization representing 23 countries on climate change petitioned the UN towards open debate on the issue, no response.
Science is a theory, those pushing CO2, and hence man on causing it, can not ignore anomalies that quedtion this conclusion.
CO2 is 1/2200 of our atmosphere by concentration, it is not the driver, it is symptom to natural cycles of nature, that are always happening.
Over the last two million years, only 40 million found lower lower levels of CO2.
Commercial Greenhouses are maintained around 1200 ppm, three times our present atmosphere.
Botanists claim since the beginning of the industrial revolution and the burning of added fossil fuels thecearth has greened, plants are more diverse, bigger, with more yield and hardier.
Yes, clean the air if it is dirty but the earth is starved of carbon.
      So, is nature stupid?
1/3 of the CO2 plants thrive on and its going to kill us, if it increases?
Use some common sense, clean the oceans, clean the air but leave nature alone.
How successful has man ever been when he confronts natural cycles of change
Its about blaming humanity, so the elite can gain huge profit and forge political control over humanity itself.

I’d be interested to see his notes. I’m not a fan of Shellenberger as he is commonly shown as being this extremely knowledgeable expert on nuclear energy despite the fact that he himself carries no degree in any field of nuclear science.
He commonly exaggerates the field of nuclear energy particularly as it relates to a very very very very specific and specialized nuclear reactor known as a LFTR (Lithium Fluoride Thorium Reactor) and has over exaggerated the simplicity of moving the entire nuclear industry over to utilize thorium as its main feedstock.
Just an FYI not only does global nuclear supply of thorium not exist, the extraction of this resource is extremely niche. While the overall reserves are greater than Uranium they exist trapped primarily in monazite deposits which are considered a waste material from silver mining. Effectively to even start his vision requires a ground up rebuilding of the entire nuclear extraction industry before a single nuclear plant is even built. The astronomical requirements of this are typically shrugged as “well figure it out”. That does not inspire confidence.
Yes thorium has benefits (not nearly as significant as Shellenberger likes to climate relative to other fertile and fissile materials) and yes a LFTR is a promising nuclear reactor variant. However he apparently did not bother to read Alvin Weinbergs conclusion assessing the MSBRE project at Oak Ridge comparing the MSBRE with uranium 235 cores to Uranium 233 bred cores. Seeing as this dude is effectively the grandfather of the entire field Shellenberger is betting his life on - probably should read up on that……

It's a LOT better than the "trust the science, durrrrr" crowd that won't even trouble themselves with discussion on this topic. I like Shellenberger not because I think he has all the solutions, but because he's taken a fairly honest approach to looking into the unchallengeable and high-political topic to see really what is the problem and what might we do about it. He came out of that realizing that most of the hype is fear-mongering with zero real solutions. We're not getting anywhere if most people only think that deep about this problem.

I'm glad that you want to "contribute in a productive way" once you begin your career, but I'm more than certain that upon leaving academia (if not before), you will discover that attempts to broach the subject in any way that does not support the approved narrative will not only be unwanted or ignored outright by colleagues, but would soon become problematic if not flatly disastrous to any career aspirations you may have. I can reasonably predict that when it happens, you will either go along to get along, or you will discover you must alter your career trajectory away from where your educational goals currently lead. But I wish you all the best, and do hope that you will indeed find a way to work in your field of choice without sacrificing your intellectual integrity. Too many have had to make that choice already, and we've seen the results as the scientific community as a whole displays the weakening of the necessary tenacity and desire to pursue truth, as instead they seek to prove the predicted outcomes which their financial donors expect them to produce in exchange for their continued support. The erosion of scrupulous adherence to scientific methods and practices necessary for real scientific achievement and advancements have been largely abandoned in favor of peer approval and employment security. And I am saddened by this, as I understand the long-term implications of my observations. I hope you have the fortitude to withstand the pressures instead of the stomach to accept it.

Protecting environment without sacrificing humans is impossible. It is a balancing act. Tip the scales too much in favour of protecting the environment, you sacrifice more humans, do too little to protect it, you sacrifice more humans. There is an optimum in what we can do, but I seriously doubt that a clinical psychologist is capable of deciding where this balance should be. Also, I looked up Lomborg, he seems to be an optimist, which is fine, but he is not great at what he does. I do however think, that Lomborg wants a serious and sincere open minded debate about climate change and what to do about it. And I wholeheartedly agree with that, because right now there is no consensus whatsoever about what to do, how to do it, and what the possible outcomes will be if we do it. Though I think misrepresenting facts (which Lomborg has done) hurts the dicussion, instead of benefiting it.

So glad to hear JP talk about renewable algae. @reinerwilhelms-tricarico344 ปีที่แล้ว +16

I'm not so sure about that algae project, and whether it's a loss that it never materialized on any industrial scale. For the system to really be effective, the algae to be used would have to be a new organism almost completely created by genetic engineering. And the founder of that project had that completely anticipated. After all, he is a real genius in microbiology and genetic engineering. While this may all sound "cool" and revolutionary, there could be huge problems if such organisms out-compete natural occurring algae. No matter how much this is downplayed, there remains a danger that such manipulation on a great scale may result in a major change of the micro-ecology of the oceans, and it may interrupt all kinds of other food chains built on top of it. Even if they may try very hard to prevent this from happening, it's very hard to see that such big biochemistry/microbiological experiments can be isolated from the natural ocean biology. The idea of "green slime oceans" sounds sensationalist, but I wouldn't say it's just a mere fantasy used for scare propaganda. It wouldn't be the first time that humankind causes major destruction to the environment by trying to save it.

Yes, algae farming is quite an imteresting topic, with numerous advancements, ex. as food supplement for animals to increase their health and reduce their methane emissions. Another one is fuel, but it's not cost effective jet.
Last year I spend a lot of time researching it and was quite surprised about how big of a business this is and how much research gets done on microalgae production and costal farms.
But I used european and chinese papers and don't know how much the US or Canada do on this front.

There are numerous possibilities to fill energy needs, at least in part, on niche levels. This rush to green energy is insane. A better course would be to, first focus on bring the rest of the world up to our efficiency. Second, to examine full line feasibility in potential conversions. Third, look for moderate steps to achieve some goals rather than crushing regulations and mandates. Gaddafi had proposed to build solar panels that were elevated in his desert creating a partial shade he figured he could produce enough electricity to supply quite a lot to Europe and to desalinate a vast amount of seawater to fresh water then under the partial shade he was going to grow crops to feed his people. I have often thought this is the real reason they took him down. There are lots of places in the world to put up solar that is not going to take out farmland. Instead create shaded areas in the desert where things could be grown underneath actually increasing farmable land.

Thank you for sharing that information, so much I didn't know. I've often wondered why more automobiles don't use Natural Gas or Propane, and why there weren't more wind farms and solar farms. Fascinating information Dr. Peterson.

@Jordan Peterson I recently saw the video of you being interviewed talking about how you didnt think many or most people who see you were happy to see you becuse they were in tears but maybe they are so happy to see you because of the peace comfort and happiness you have given them from you're wisdom that they are in tears because you gave them a second chance at life chin up my friend this came to my mind because that's what you gave to me and I think if I met you I'd be in tears but they wouldn't be sad tears they would be happy joyful tears for the second chance at life you're wisdom and understanding gave me and all those other people you are a true gift to humanity I hope you see this comment and you're doing well

The enormous value of research and development must be stated! In the long term, publicly funded research organisations ie: NASA provide enormous benefit to the world and pay their funding off multiple times over as a result. It's bizarre and disappointing to learn how funding for R&D has decreased. Thank you for highlighting this.

They quit researching, because they have no intention of achieving the goal you're talking about, because unlike you, they know what their agenda is, and it's got way more to do with controlling the masses, than controlling global warming.

I’m getting sick of corporate companies believing they own their employees 🙄
Giving them tons training mostly health and safely stuff.
Employees having to do all this often in their own time.
I remember ‘saving the planet’ aged 7….
Then we had to close the Ozone layer apparently we achieved that.
    Now it’s gone up a gear 😤
Young people probably believe it all like I did yeh I’m sceptical.

Unfortunately these voices of dissent are not tolerated by those meeting at every COP, who primarily represent their interests & not those of earth or their own people!
Thank you for such a wonderful summary of truth that’s increasingly silenced 🔕

Because theyre contrarians and muddy the water and derail the conversation. Charlatans, grifters, sophists, demagogues.
Just in my life time alone, we went from 5.5 billion to 8 billion people, 345ppm co2 to about 420ppm. We all know Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction 252 million years ago was caused by a large volume of green house gasses dumped into earths atmosphere "The Great Dying", these guys are saying our species can do the same and we wont cause a mass extinction event?
It's that level of hubris that causes these guys to not be included, more or less theyre paid to be merchants of doubt.

A few other things to know about algae biofuel:
1: While electricity is too weak to power tractors or semi-trucks with full loads, biofuel is stronger than gasoline and has been used to power jets
2: There are already multiple types of algae biofuel competing to become as strong as possible
3: Biofuel can be combined with gasoline allowing for a smooth transition rather than step by step change

From the way things are going, the people at cop27 are absolutely exceeding at their intended goals. It’s just that their goals don’t actually have any relation to the climate.

I think an important point being left out is that finding alternatives to oil is of vital national security interest of the United States. If American oil extraction remains at the current level (yes, even Biden's level), American oil runs dry in just 5 years (late 2027)
