  • Aaron Jonah Lewis on banjo and Dalton Ridenhour on piano performing Ragtime Oriole, by James Scott (composed 1911). Can you hear the oriole singing?
Video was recorded and edited by Horatio Baltz during a Lovestruck Balladeers residency at ArtYard in Frenchtown, NJ, in April of 2019. Arrangement inspired by the playing of Fred Van Eps, one of the greatest banjo players who ever lived (and he also lived in New Jersey.)
This piece was recorded later on in 2019 in Brooklyn and was included on the Lovestruck Balladeers' full-length debut album, available at lovestruckballadeers.bandcamp...

As Steve Martin once said - “you can’t be depressed and play banjo”. Or listen to one. 🍎❤️💋🎼

This sounds like something that could have been written for Mother 2 / Earthbound. I love it. Subbed!

Absolutely excellent my friend. I played ragtime banjo about 25 years ago having played claw hammer for a while. I hVent touched it since my exams years ago but am going to pick it up again. Again thank you virtuoso.

Yup, made me smile! Steve Martin was right! When people ask me why I like to play my banjo, that's what I tell them!

Well that was amazing playing. Just makes me feel happy like my belly smiling ha ha.
How did you get the fifth string to not ring while you were playing? I’m definitely going to check out your playlist of lessons and maybe ask you for a private. I’ve been wanting to learn how to play like George Formby ukulele style on the banjo but I can’t figure out how to get the fifth string to not ring. I found some ideas and Banjo hang out but so far they’re not working that great. Any tips are welcome and thanks for your beautiful playing

That's so random, I came here after seeing Peter from Family Guy and another random guy making a fart banjo battle

So dirty good. What´s up with those sweeping-kind of double/triple notes on the melodies? Is there a name for that kind of stacatto picking technique?

Am loving this. Is that an old Bacon & Day fitted with nylon strings? So nice to hear that timbre.

Yes, it's a B&D Senorita made by Gretsch circa 1954-56

That was mind blowing sir. What kind of banjo is that? the tone is so unique to me

Thanks! That’s my Bacon Señorita, circa 1954-56. It’s set up with nylon strings and played with bare fingers in the classic style.

@@AaronJonahLewis I watched like 5 of your videos last night. I just bought my first banjo last week and I wanted to see some good ragtime style. You’re one of the best I’ve ever seen! I can’t believe you make it sound like that with no fingerpicks. And your timing is just flawless

@@spinblackcircles Thank you, that is so kind of you to say that. What kind of banjo did you get? If you’re interested in learning classic style I made an incomplete series of lessons in a playlist. I’m also available for online lessons but really the best resource I know is www.classic-banjo.ning.com I teach clawhammer, bluegrass, and basic jazz on the banjo as well.

The banjo provides a kicking it type country sensibility. Okey dokey

Most ragtime banjo is on Four string instruments but this is a five string Bluegrass type. Was the fifth string removed?
