Skipped school on a Friday in 1981 and drove to the Hollywood Sportatorium (Florida) with some friends to see The Police concert. BEST DAY OF MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!!! Stayed the entire day. Got there at 10 am...swam in the ocean and laid on the beach, ate amazing seafood, drank a SINFUL amount of margaritas... all until 5pm...then we showered and went to the best concert EVER! I would give anything to re-live that day! :D Making the 3 hour drive home was a mixture of pure joy and agony both! We all knew we would NEVER have a day like that again! (and we didn't) Thank you for the upload!!!!
For an island touch, listen to 'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic' by the Police. For an Arabic sound listen to 'Desert Rose ' by Sting. Two of my favorites! 👍🏾👵🏿❤
When Sting says "Just like that old man in that book by Nabokov" he's talking about the character Humbert Humbert from Vladimir Nabokov's classic novel "Lolita." Something you should definitely listen to by the Police is "Driven To Tears" followed by "When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around." The two songs are meant to go together and they sound great.
Another fantastic track. We loved this when it came out... even though some of the implications of the lyrics went over our very youthful heads at the time! (And I forgot that Sting was wearing a Beat t-shirt in this video... they were also known as the English Beat and definitely worth checking out, too -- Mirror in the Bathroom and Save It For Later are both great)
I don’t think there’s enough blonds in this band lol. The Police were incredible. Such gifted musicians too (which you had to be in those days). Walking On The Moon, So Lonely, Beds Too Big Without You, Can’t Stand Losing You....all equally fantastic.
Yes, if you can listen to Eva Cassidy's Version not to mention Nadine Coyle's version as well. She sang this when she auditioned to be in an up and coming girlband called Girls Aloud and on November 30th 2002 she got in and they became one of the biggest Girlbands to come out of the UK. This Video epitomizes how Art Imitates Life or the other way around. In Real Life Sting "was" a Teacher. Alot of folks become Teachers in the UK where the Kids educational system means well but has it's share of problems.
For your next Police reaction, I suggest either "Spirits in the Material World" or "Walking on the Moon". As far as nationality, the drummer is American, and the other two are British.
Have a reaction to The Beat (known in the US as The English Beat because there was already a band in America with that name). I first heard them as a 6th grader in 1981, thanks to the indie college radio station in my town. They had a lot of great songs in the "ska" style: "Hands Off, She's Mine", "Save It for Later", "I Confess", "Mirror in the Bathroom", "Too Nice to Talk To", "Twist And Crawl", among others.
The first single by The Beat which I remember noticing (and buying!) here in the UK was their cover of Smokey Robinson and The Miracles’ “The Tears of a Clown” - the style of The Beat worked very well for it I thought, and I loved the late Ranking Roger’s vocal contribution as the song faded out. It was their first hit here, in 1979.
So Lonely and Bed's Too Big Without You are Police tunes with heavy reggae influence. Also, this is a perfect time to listen to The Beat (known as The English Beat here in the states). That is the shirt Sting is wearing in this video. The Beat are a Ska band which is a british adaption of reggae sort of. Some of their great songs include Stand Down Margaret, Hands Off She's Mine, Best Friend, Save It for Later, Mirror In The Bathroom and Doors Of Your Heart.
People mistake stings singing style for reggae he’s actually singing in his native Geordie accent, I’m from Newcastle upon Tyne in England and the Jamaican dialect is very similar to the Geordie accent.
A lot of their songs had a reggae element to them. The Police was considered an English band, both Sting and Andy Sumners (guitarist)are English. The drummer, Stewart Copeland is American
Two Englishmen and an American. Sting, bass and lead singer, Andy on guitar and Stuart Copeland( the American) on drums. One of the greatest drummers/ percussionist ever.
OMG, The Police is such an epic band! I remember going to London in the early 80s and staying with a music producer (Steven) and his girlfriend. Anyway, Steve brought back some instruments to the apartment (a electric keyboard, some electric guitars) so he would work with them. I was playing with the keyboard when he said, "Hey, you know that The Police used that? I believe Sting used it" I was so excited, I -including his girlfriend- started putting our hands all over that keyboard. LOL 😄
The first time I saw the Police, Andy Summers introduced the song “Walking on the Moon” as having just hit #1 on the charts. Great tune. I’m also a fan of “Message in a Bottle”, The Bed’s Too Big Without You”, “Can’t Stand Losing You”, “So Lonely”, and “Roxanne”. I like their earlier stuff. 💜
Stuart Copeland is known as one of the best drummers of all time, he went on to become one of the very best producers of all time after the police broke up. When they started off in the 80s they had a very ska feel, the T-shirt he's wearing the beat it's from the Ska band the English Beat make sure you check out there songs! Best friend, mirror in the bathroom....
It's called SKA - check out the English Beat - this is a fusion music of pre - Reggae, punk, rhythm and blues. this is really '2nd wave' ska - began in the 50's in Jamaica
One of these days someone is going to react to their song Walking On The Moon. One of their earliest hits and it was huge. Reggae infused vibes. A must!
One of my favourites is Sting’s They Dance Alone. The song is a metaphor referring to mourning Chilean women (arpilleristas) who dance the Cueca, the national dance of Chile, alone with photographs of their disappeared loved ones in their hands. Sting explained his song as a symbolic gesture of protest against the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet whose regime killed thousands of people between 1973 and 1990. This song was recorded in both English (with some spoken Spanish words by the Panamanian salsa singer, Rubén Blades) and Spanish (with additional lyrics by Roberto Livi). This latter version was titled "Ellas Danzan Solas" and was released on the 1988 EP Nada como el sol.
The Police were a British-American band. Sting and guitarist Andy Summers are British and drummer Stewart Copeland is American. Catchy riffs were one of their trademarks in their songs.
Did you notice the t-shirt Sting is wearing? It's The Beat, also known in the U.S. as The English Beat. They were an '80s ska influenced band, they made a lot of great songs like 'Save It for Later', 'I Confess', 'Doors of Your Heart', 'Hands Off... She's Mine', 'Too Nice to Talk To'.
Sting is from the UK! He is English! The Police started in the 70's & were huge in the 80's. You mentioned the drums. Andy Sumner is fantastic. Stings solo career is what truly impresses me. He is a prolific writer & singer. Yes, there is reggae influence but Sting is known for studying sounds & music from all over the world & incorporating it in. Sting is one of a kind. His voice is very recognizable & song writing on point. His long solo career proves it.
@@surlechapeau OMG you're right!! Stings real name is Gordon Sumner. I was thinking about doing that as a fun fact & mixed it!! 🤣😂🤣 I DEFINITELY meant Stuart Copeland. He's such a cool drummer. ❤

Sting also did a beautiful song called “Moonlight”, the music was written in collaboration with John Williams ( who won 25 Grammy awards for musical scores for films like “Star Wars”). It’s rarely heard but a masterpiece by two masters.
Great tune! Loved it, Jay. Some other English bands from that time that were inspired by the reggae sound include the English Beat, the Clash (Guns of Brixton), Pretenders (Private Life) and Elvis Costello (Watching the Detectives). Would love you to check out Sponji Reggae by Black Uhuru!
If you want to hear The Police play a reggae song, check out "The Bed's Too Big Without You" off their second album, Regatta de Blanc, released in 1979. Also check out "Walking on the Moon" and "Bring on the Night" from that same album.
They are British and they broke up years ago. Sting went solo and his stuff is just as amazing. The police are one of my favorite bands, have been since I first heard them as a kid in the early 80s.
Covid theme song!! ;) Fun Fact: Sting was actually a teacher before he got into music!! Real name: Gordon Sumner...and they are from England... Great reaction!!
FUN FACT: "Don't Stand..." was rediscovered in 2020 as the perfect COVID19 hymn, promoting social-distancing! In May, Jimmy Fallon did a remote stay-at-home duet with Sting (with Questlove and the band playing the other instruments !).
Great reaction to a great band. The Police were from England, though the drummer (Stuart Copeland) is an American. They started out of the punk scene, but were not really punks, they had jazz level chops, but liked the energy of punk and the rhythmic beat of reggae, plus lot of pop sensibility. In 5 albums, they became the biggest band in the world in 1983, the broke up over internal tensions.

Still love them to this day. You would like “Walking on the Moon” Jay. It has a bit more of a reggae feel than this one. But I love most of their songs (pre 1983). They’ve never done an actual full “reggae song” that I know of! (That’s more like UB40). They’ve always added a punk/rock element to their songs. I guess that’s what made them different!
Fun fact: the band is actually Stewart’s Band. You can find the original version of the police - Sting, Stewart, Henery P on the top of the pops in weird masks. Search for KLARK KENT on top of the pops on TH-cam
The T-Shirt Sting is wearing is from one of my favorite bands The Beat (AKA the English Beat). You must check them out soon, you should start with "Save it for later".
The Police were from the UK and formed there but their great drummer was from the US... check out de do do dah or walking on the moon, invisible sun .... any of their songs ... they are all real bangers
The band on Sting's t-shirt is one you should check out too - The Beat (known as The English Beat here in the U.S.) - I think you'd like Mirror in the Bathroom
Fun fact 3: they aren’t “pulling songs out of their sleeves”. Sting keep a song book of All the songs that he wrote and he would collaborate with the band snd then open his book and they would write a song from Stings song book. Check out some of Gordon’s early work in his band “Last Exit” you will hear a lot of familiar songs ( ie they were already written when. The police were formed)

According to Sting, it's about a lot more than tension. The song doesn't say it explicitly, but there's a rape in the car.

The Police. Loved their "Syncronicity" album
The band on Sting's t-shirt is one you should check out too - The Beat (known as The English Beat here in the U.S.) - I think you'd like Mirror in the Bathroom
They are a British band listen to all of their album amazing!
This song is one of the best from the day! 👍
Fun fact 3: they aren’t “pulling songs out of their sleeves”. Sting keep a song book of
All the songs that he wrote and he would collaborate with the band snd then open his book and they would write a song from
Stings song book. Check out some of
Gordon’s early work in his band “Last Exit” you will hear a lot of familiar songs ( ie they were already written when. The police were formed)
Yes, and ...
Don't forget to read some (*) Nabokov (please) before any comments away about this perfect Sting's song and understand he was a teacher before he turned to music with The Police (!) or of course, you could be disappointed a little... 🙏
