On first reading Jimmy & Jordan did specify the "affinity for artifact creatures," but it seems like they lose that line pretty fast. By 5 minutes in they're talking about how mana rocks can reduce his cost. They catch it by minute 6, but just watch out that you don't make that same mistake when you're playing him friends!
Just picked up this deck as my first commander deck and getting back into MTG. Only played casually for a few months back in 2013. Coming from Yugioh it's a nice change of pace
I came to MTG through the same route a few years back. I miss playing YGO but the insane power creep, lightning fast pace and the bringing in of Link monsters kinda killed it for me. No way my casual, but still quite good deck can compete at locals anymore. Pauper and Commander are just awesome fun and have that schoolyard feel that is now missing for me in YGO.
Question? Are you building Urza or Tawnos? I'm currently building Tawnos reanimator with many Thopter makers to get the reanimation off. I still dont see the value in Urza, was wondering how someone else is building him.
@@andrewfornes5320 urza. I dont think tawnos is worth the effort and urza is fairly straightforward. I've been wanting to build an artifact creature commander and urza fits the bill. The other urzas are gonna fit too. Tawnos seems like you need to get too much going for it to take off, and my meta is too fast for it
Loved this deck, still do. Renamed it to Urza’s Aether Flux Paradox Cannon. Running a few artifact clones, decrease artifact cards. And a few win con pieces. Aeon Engine - For p1 / p2 turns, cucking p3 / p4 out of turns Stonecloud Curio - so I can do a bounce back infini summon using Ornithopter and Phyrexian Walker. And I’ll have to depend on Alela for field hitters to trigger Curio Aetherflux Reservoir - Combo for Curio infini summon, getting myself up to at least 440 hp to snipe all 3 of my opponents Platinum Angel - Just in case someone decides to try and game end Ivory Towers & Well of lost dreams - For life gain / draw engine to support piece gathering and Aether loading Fun times ahead
5:05 - Urza has affinity for artifact creatures, not artifacts as a whole. If you have mana rocks, they may help pay for the WUB part of Urza's cost, but they do no contribute to the affinity payment unless they are artifact creatures (some rocks can become creatures on their own, such as the Keyrunes from RTR, but that process is often more expensive).
Cards I would add: - Dollhouse of Horrors -> Total yank with this deck! - The Reality Chip -> Play from the top of your deck? sign me up! - Rebbec, Architec of Ascension -> most cases, you have protection from the most common CMC. - Bolas's Citadel -> Artifact, play from the top, also call back to Legends. - Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh -> reduce activated abilities from artifacts, draw engine too, and creates artifact creatures.
Just be sure if you take out Urza's Ruinous Blast and Phyrexian Rebirth, you're only left with Austere Command as Board wipe (And Organic Extinction if you side this in). The Flesh is weak can't be considered as a board wipe. Maybe adding 1 or 2 more would help the deck to be sure you can see one of those during game play if you need it.
I actually like the card frame way more than the new ones. It's not just about the border. In the old frames every color looked different (parchment look of the text box etc.) and in the new frame they all look the same.. The only thing that's better in the new frame is that the writing is in black and not white. It's a substantial upside, I give you that, but the overall 'character' of each color is lacking/not at all supported by the new frame.
Nice to see Sicarian Infiltrator on your list. It seemed like folks were sleeping on that one. Any card that compares favorably with Mulldrifter is worth a look.
I building my Tawnos deck like it's a Feldon of the Third Path deck. I already have and love Feldon. Going to make copies of Panharmonicon then start duplicating creature tokens to mimic feldons playstyle. So excited
Same. I already own Feldon and Tawnos just seems amazing. Im doing mainly Thopter Tribal. Cards like Sai and Thopter Shop to get the tokens for my reanimation targets.
Worth noting; since Hexavus simply says “remove a counter from another creature you control”, you can actually remove a -1/-1 counter should that situation be applicable!
This was fair. I enjoyed this a lot and it helped me with the decision on who and what cards to take out for replacement. One thing I do believe you forgot is card protection/card removal.I’m leaning more toward finding those cards and adding them to a deck just incase of a wipe or two or three. It may be harder to get back up and rolling due to the majority of high mana costing cards in the deck. Otherwise love you guys. I don’t need tv anymore just command zone 😅👌🏽
For the very first time since Commander precon decks are a thing, I have preordered both of them. I love the old frame treatment so much, this is what Magic cards should look like to me :)
Now, I know everything these days combos with Devoted Druid, but Hexavus goes infinite with Devoted Druid! Not in this deck obviously BUT Crashing Drawbridge/another haste enabler, D Druid, and this weird flying octopus manta ray artifact thing becomes infinitely big and kind cool to look at!
Clearly because it's primarily a budget upgrade guide. Sure they could also add Mana Crypt etc, but they need to draw the line somewhere, and if you're adding those expensive staples, then you don't really need this video anyway...
@@jenzo42 they have a section for splurge cards, and while Mana Crypt is a boring card that can go into every deck, Urza’s Saga is literally named after the Commander of the deck. Also, Urza’s Saga is $30 compared to Mana Crypt’s several hundred dollars, so it’s not as unreasonable for most people to acquire.
Ruthless technomancer is the first card i would add to this deck tbh. You sac 1 karnstruct, to pump the rest of your karnstructs, he almost functions like a mini createrhoof depending on your boardstate. At the very least he will make a crap tonne of treasures
Preordered both decks. I will likely not upgrade them or only upgrade them with old border cards. Cards with a new frame will only destroy its aesthetics.
That was a point I wish they'd focused on a little bit with this guide - cards that exist in old border that would make better inclusions than the 10 they chose to remove
This deck had me quite excited to turn it into an old border Alela, Artful Provocateur deck. A lot of the pieces are already in the deck or have recently been printed in an old border design (eg Time Spiral Remastered). The main issue seems to be the land base. Rather difficult to improve this without new border cards :/
There’s one underrated card nobody ever seems to remember that can be game breaking. That’s Wash Out. Yes it is sorcery speed, but your creatures are often colorless. Your stuff stays and your biggest threats don’t.
Tawnos + Intruder Alarm + Palladium Myr + Artifact Creature Token or Tawnos + Intruder Alarm + Palladium Myr (Token). Activate Tawnos' first ability by tapping Palladium Myr, generating {2}. Target the artifact creature token, the ability resolves, Token ETB, Intruder alarm triggers, untap all creatures, repeat until infinite self mill and infinite creature tokens. Win the game with Thassa's Oracle or Lab Maniac by activating Tawnos' second ability (targetting them on your graveyard) or just by having Altar of the Brood on the field. Just... lol
Fortuitous Find and Remember the Fallen are good budget cards because they say pick one or both: return target creature to your hand or return target artifact to your hand. So win win.
I disagree with cutting the creature that scale to your artifact count but I’m going in an affinity direction, all the 0 drop artifact creatures and affinity artifact creatures to make sure I can cast Urza turn 4 by the latest and then just all creatures that are either mana dorks to play double duty on getting out urza & creatures that scale to your artifact count. I think Mycosynth would also be insane make all the scale creatures scale to your entire board and also it deters mass artifact destruction since they’ll lose their entire boards too
Not sure if you guys have this pull, but you should tell Ultra Pro to carry more inventory of there new products. The Warhammer sleeves and deck boxes went out of stock on the same day I got an email. It would be nice if that didn't happen.
Have it played it enjoy it, but it NEEDS to refocus out of the box to go wide, the Karnstructs go big on their own. Myr mana dorks and Hangerback walker have done work for me
Don't forget when looking at value of reprints these decks cost 10 bucks more now, but are being compared to decks that costed less with more value....
Would be a great idea for it if you have one but it does cost a bit. Unwinding clock, semblance anvil and foundry inspector are other great ideas with it. Im also swapping out for a terisian mindbreaker and a hulking metamorph. Bit of high costs but more for end game
Im definitely building a tribal thopter deck built around Tawnos. He seems like such a nicer commander than Urza. Add in thopter sword combo and some nice reanimation targets. Seems like a deck that builds itself.
I mean these are budget upgrades but there is a way to make stuff good with these strats, the obvious includes that aren't sword-thopter foundry combo seems weird to me. then you can have junk diver-scrap trawler-myr retreiver combo along with krak-cla iron works. since your on tokens use eldrazi monument solves indestuctible issues as well as darksteel forge
Retro frames are best frames. I have spent hundreds to get my mono nothing Karn deck in all brown boarder cards. I can't wait for these 2 decks to "upgrade" it even more
Does the deck have any ways to gain life? Because if you add biotransferrance and play it in the first few turns you'll lose a lot of life over the next few turns and I've had it lose be the game when I didn't have a way to get rid of it...

@@jenzo42 i am making a joke about how it only costs 2 mana(sol ring) to copy a 2 mana producer. You could take your turn 1 sol ring and make another turn 2. I doubt having 2 sol rings turn 1 is worth the effort. With the amount of cards needed, you could probably just win.
Can Hexavus go infinite with Devoted Druid? Druid untaps for the -1/-1 Counter to add Green, then Hexavus uses the Green to remove the -1/-1 Counter to push himself and then goes infinite.

Just got the Urza Pre-con today for 30 bucks! It was too good of a deal to pass. And I immediately added a thousand moons smithy to the deck!
I'm interested in the deck, will probably buy it, but am not excited about the old borders. I actually prefer the look for modern cards more.

i am disepointed how can you not mention Padeem, Consul of Innovation. all artifacts have hexproof and you get an extra card every upkeep.

@@jenzo42 i am making a joke about how it only costs 2 mana(sol ring) to copy a 2 mana producer. You could take your turn 1 sol ring and make another turn 2. I doubt having 2 sol rings turn 1 is worth the effort. With the amount of cards needed, you could probably just win.

Can Hexavus go infinite with Devoted Druid? Druid untaps for the -1/-1 Counter to add Green, then Hexavus uses the Green to remove the -1/-1 Counter to push himself and then goes infinite.
